01/15/23 - Playa Matapalo, Costa Rica - MORNING ENTERTAINMENT - The monkeys are active this morning and doing a great job of keeping us entertained while we sip coffee and take pictures from our balcony. This is a White-Faced Monkey also known as a Capuchin Monkey. They are one of the four major monkey species in Costa Rica and have the distinction of being the smartest monkey in the Americas. This guy seemed to be acting as the sentinel for the rest of the Capuchins feeding nearby in the surrounding jungle. They didn’t confine themselves to the jungle: we’ve seen them scampering across the telephone lines and on the roof of our room and some of the adjacent outbuildings. Pura Vida!

Matapalo o árbol estrangulador, son los nombres vulgares de unas cuantas especies de árboles, principalmente del género Ficus, debido a su hábito de crecimiento. Son especies cuyas semillas, germinadas sobre ramas de árboles tras ser transportadas por el viento o algún animal, comienzan su vida vegetativa como epífitas, aunque solo utilizan a su anfitrión como apoyo, no como sustento alimenticio.

Wandervogelbeobachtungen

Wie bisher so ziemlich jeder Beitrag hier, beginnt auch der heutige mit sowas wie früh aufstehen und so nem Kram. Der morgige auch. Deswegen drehen wir das jetzt um und ich sage Bescheid, wenn wir mal ausschlafen. Nun denn: an einer kleinen Bäckerei besorgten wir uns Proviant. Als „Entschädigung“ für den ausgefallenen Ausflug in den Nationalpark gab uns der Anbieter nämlich Tipps: wir sollten nach Matapalo fahren, um uns einen Wasserfall anzusehen und dabei gute Chancen auf coole Tiere zu haben. Gesagt, getan - wir saßen um 6 Uhr im „Collectivo“, einem Sammeltaxi, wie es sie in lateinamerikanischen Ländern zuhauf gibt. Und wie sonst auch, handelte es sich natürlich um eine absolute Klapperkiste. Mit dieser wollten wir eine Stunde gen Süden auf den Schlaglöchern umherspringen und den Rest am Strand zurückgehen.

Dann jedoch stellte sich heraus, dass das Collectivo tatsächlich bis nach Carate fahren würde - das Eintrittstor zum Nationalpark. Die spanischen Touristen, die mit uns fuhren, hatten eben das vor und kurz überlegten wir, ob wir auch dort herumlaufen sollten. Dann allerdings würden wir es nicht zum Wasserfall schaffen. Die Tide stellte ein zusätzliches Problem dar, wollten wir Matapalo von dort aus rechtzeitig erreichen. Wir überlegten hin und her und entschieden uns für eine „nichts halbes und nichts ganzes“-Lösung und stiegen einfach irgendwo aus. Von dort wollten wir zum Strand. Der Trampelpfad über eine Kuhwiese sagte uns aber nicht sonderlich zu. Denn falsches Schuhwerk in Europa ist eine Sache, in Mittelamerika eine andere.

So drehten wir nach ein paar hundert Metern um und gingen an der Straße entlang, wo wir bereits recht bald Kapuzineräffchen trafen. Irgendwann dann sahen wir ein Schild eines Researchcenters, das wir spannend fanden und so liefen wir selbstverständlich mitten in die Forschungsstation. Zu meiner Verwunderung wollte niemand mit hochgezogener Augenbraue wissen, was wir dort tun, sondern sie erklärten uns bereitwillig unsere Optionen für Wanderungen auf deren Gelände, die wir im Anschluss gingen. Und so fanden wir doch den Weg in den Dschungel. Zweieinhalb Stunden liefen wir dort umher und fanden wiedermal unfassbar spannende Tiere. Wieder ohne Guide und trotzdem erfolgreich, wie geil. Mit dabei waren Pecaris und sogar ein Säugetier, das wir nicht kannten. Aber auch eine schlafende Fledermaus, eklige Spinnen, Brüllaffen und und und.

Nach der Wanderung des Trails aßen wir noch in der Station und machten uns im Anschluss auf den Weg. Leider haben wir die Zeit unterschätzt und langsam aber sicher wurde bei sengender Hitze klar, dass wir wohl nicht länger als fünf Minuten Zeit am Wasserfall haben werden. Also sofern wir unsere Pausen minimieren. Am Höhepunkt dieser To(rt)ur (der angehende Doktor Nico erkundigte sich bei mir, ob eine Überhitzung des Körpers möglich sei) fuhren zwei gut gelaunte Costa-Ricaner auf dem Weg zu einem Angelausflug an uns vorbei, zeigten fragend in die Richtung in die wir gingen und deuteten uns in einer Handbewegung, hinten auf ihren Pick-Up aufzuspringen. Ein Segen - der Fahrtwind, das Gefühl der Freiheit und wiedermal die Gewissheit, dass am Ende alles klappt. So schafften wir es noch rechtzeitig zu unserem Wasserfall mit natürlichem Pool, konnten uns waschen und das Frischwasser, das selbst mir nicht zu kalt war, genießen. Und das war nach unseren über 42.000 Schritten wirklich bitter nötig.

Dag 10 (heb 1 dag overgeslaan) in costa rica. Prachtig strand in Matapalo, met veiligheidszone voor schildpadeieren, die rond keren van tij ‘s avonds op het strand worden gelegd. Met bewaker en datums per perkje. Na ontbijt vertrokken voor cero del muerte, een pas van 3300 hoogte, was vroeger niet ongevaarlijk om over te steken vandaar de naam, maar is sinds kort perfect geasfalteerd, kunnen de Fransen of Italianen een puntje aan zuigen. Gestopt bij een café op 3000m hoogte voor koffie en hebben er een halsketting voor Helena en een hemd voor mijzelf gekocht. Dan dalen naar san Gerardo, zeer alpenachtige cottages, met lekker eten. Nog wandelingetje (privé trials voor 10$ per persoon laten liggen) naar waterval, maar de tweede waterval niet gezien gezien de toestand vh wandelpad en de verroeste bruggen. Veel gegeten en gekaart ‘s avonds. Bedrust om 8u30!

Do We Need Entertainment at Strong Men's Conferences?

The result is compelling visual metaphor—a tree at once vibrant yet ensnared by the very elements meant to augment its growth. Incidentally, that's also the main theme of today's episode, but let's back up.

Does entertainment even belong in the church?

In this episode of the podcast, I share some of the deep sense of disillusionment that arises when respected spiritual leaders fall from grace, citing examples a couple of high profile example figures who've irreparably ruined their earthly legacies. We also discuss the dangers of distractions and idolatry, and how "killing sticks," can hinder our spiritual growth and relationship with God. I hope to challenge listeners to reflect on any aspects of their lives that may be taking precedence over their faith.

Amid reflections on personal and collective failures, this episode's overarching message remains one of hope, redemption, and the transformative power of returning to the core of our faith in Jesus and an organic approach to Christianity free from the matapalo of the American Gospel Enterprise.

01/14/23 - Playa Matapalo, Costa Rica - HOTEL STAYCATION - That’s our room on the top floor of our bed & breakfast. All the wildlife, mostly monkeys and scarlet macaws, woke us up this morning. We were mesmerized watching them move about the jungle and in the air while sipping our morning coffee from the balcony. This B&B and its beautiful lush setting was an unexpected gem. So much so that after a great breakfast, we decided to abandon our plans to go hiking in a nearby National Park and spend the day lounging by the pool and up on the covered balcony napping to the sound of the afternoon rain. All in all, a very relaxing B&B staycation after lots of driving the last couple of days and another long driving day in the mountains planned for tomorrow. Pura Vida!
