One Dive, One Garbage!
Is our planet dying, is the water we swim in safe?
As a professional diver for the past 25 years, globetrotting around the world, I have seen the impact humans have on the environment, especially the sea. Around 71% of our planet is made up of water. According to plastic-pollution.org, about 260 million tons of plastic is produced each year and roughly 10 % of that ends up in our seas and oceans. I have recently discovered an informative article that discusses the quantity of garbage being dumped in landfills and the impact it has on our environment. According to Kadir vab Lohuizen and Noor, authors of “Drowning in Garbage”, approximately 3.5 million tons of garbage are being produced each day and around 300 million tons per year. Unfortunately, our waterways have become a hotspot for getting rid of garbage; “out of sight, out of mind.” One question that is always on my mind is what can we do about it?
I am a PADI Master Instructor and Course Director (Instructor Trainer) and have made my living from the sea for the past 25 years. As a scuba instructor, I have lived and worked in over 14 countries around the world and have logged approximately 10,000 dives. I was certified as a diver in 1990 and from day one, I spotted trash beneath the sea. From plastic, to rubber tires, to car batteries and bathtubs, there is no discrimination when it comes to what is being dumped. I was taught early in my dive career that the ocean is our friend and we must take care and respect it.
Many times, I have come across full bags of garbage during a dive; it really saddens me to see people treat a friend that way. Thus, I began a quest to educate divers on safe diving practices and responsible waste management. When I started teaching in 1994, I incorporated the “One Dive-One Garbage” rule, which meant that every time I went diving, my students and I, each removed a piece of trash.
In 1993, I participated in my first PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) Underwater Clean-Up event and from that day on, I have organized and taken part in underwater clean-ups in Canada, Honduras, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Malta and Romania. PADI created a foundation in 1989 that is dedicated to preserving and protecting the oceans called The Project Aware Foundation. AWARE is an acronym that stands for Aquatic World Awareness Responsibility Education. It’s very important to think about responsible waste management and participating in beach clean-ups and underwater cleaning events is a positive start.
Recently, my wife and I had a baby and we decided to name her Maya, which means water in Arabic. After Maya’s birth, I have become even more concerned about the environment and how we are treating our planet. What will we leave to future generations and what can we do now that will ensure a healthy planet for them?
One initiative that got me excited last year was the creation of 4 Ocean, a non-profit organization with a sole purpose to clean up the oceans and stop the dumping of plastic. One key feature of their ambitious campaign is that when you donate a minimum of $20 to their cause, they send you a 4Ocean bracelet made from the plastic collected during ocean clean-ups. I found out about this project via social media and I believe social media plays a crucial role in spreading the message, educating on ways to protect our oceans and the planet, while at the same time, bringing people together.
Over the next few months I will be exploring responsible waste management: underwater clean-ups events, recycling, reuse and re-purposing techniques, public awareness campaigns, because I believe everyone can make a difference and “to make a change, we have the be the change.”

She is based in Scotland and dives all year round in the North Sea and the sea lochs of the Scottish west coast. A photographer before she was a diver, taking pictures underwater was a natural development for Elaine, who was awarded a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society with a portfolio of underwater images.
She has had articles published in a range of magazines, both general interest and diving, including Scottish Wildlife, Diver, The Undersea Journal, The Sea, BBC Wildlife and the Scot’s Magazine. Her work has also featured in a number of exhibitions, such as the Royal Photographic Society's Projected Image Exhibition, the Edinburgh International Exhibition of Photography and the Scottish Parliament's Biodiversity Exhibition. She had a solo exhibition, Scotland’s Waters Brought To Life, in Stirling's Smith Museum. Her images have appeared in a range of books and she is a contributor to Wild & Temperate Seas, 50 Favourite UK Dives, which was published in November, 2020.
Elaine was shortlisted in the 2020 Scottish Nature Photography Awards and her image appears in the Portfolio Yearbook which was published in the autumn of 2021.

Continuing your education after certifying as a scuba diving is also a great idea, and the choices of specialty areas to training in will be heavily dependent on where you wish to teach and also based on your particular diving interests.
With the Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) preparation course you will gain 5 specialties in your chosen fields and once you have certified 25 students you will be eligible to apply for MSDT rating. It is often the case that employers will require a prospective employee to have the MSDT rating and the rating will therefore give new Instructors a slight edge over other prospective candidates and also showing a commitment to the PADI Education system and a wider variety of PADI programs a person is able to teach.
Another continuing education program is the PADI Staff Instructor Course. The PADI Staff Instructor Rating means that you are able to teach Assistant Instructor Courses as well as assist on all portions of the Instructor Development Course (IDC). It is also a prerequisite for the Master Instructor Rating. The Master Instructor Rating is often a requirement when dive centres are employing for management positions.
Of course sometimes you may only wish to teach one or two specialty courses, such as wreck and nitrox, which can often be the case if you are intending on working in an area where there are shallow wrecks. As well as conducting Specialty courses and the MSDT Preparation Course, we also provide staff instructor training and run the Master Instructor (Course Director Prep) Program.
