AR activism has the ability to blend physical and virtual presences together. In the past, activism could often be ignored and overlooked with a low effectiveness. However, with the introduction of augmented reality activism, the political and financial elite will have a much more difficult time at silencing the activists. With the ability to use personal smart phones, activist messages can be created and freely shared to a mass audience. As the article stated, “AR can turn the global community into an audience while at the same time giving them a voice.” Made possible by AR, the ability of an activist to share a message or trigger a protest from across the globe is truly unique to the concept. AR has allowed activists to become present in the locative state of the message, which in turn allows the person to be more involved rather than if they were simply hearing the message from third-parties at a remote location.
Guerilla protection, as defined by the article, is when an activist utilizes powerful projectors to cast messages and images on the sides of buildings. Logo hacking allows activists to easily target corrupt companies and expose their wrongdoings by sabotaging their own logo or advertisements. Diminished reality removes aspects of reality with AR, rather than adding aspects to reality, which is evidenced by Erase the Separation Barrier in the article.
I think a great opportunity for AR activism in today’s society would be at Stoneman Douglas High School in wake of the terrible tragedy of the school shooting. Gun control activists have the ability to use AR to resonate their message with everyone in the country and around the globe. There’s no need for a physical presence in Florida with AR, as the message has the ability to be created and distributed freely with a mass audience.
