This incredible ivory lace gown, heavily appliquéd with grape leaves, was worn by Mary Astor as Mrs. Anna Smith in the 1944 film 𝑴𝒆𝒆𝒕 𝑴𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝑺𝒕. 𝑳𝒐𝒖𝒊𝒔 before appearing again in the 1958 musical 𝑮𝒊𝒈𝒊.   The costume was purchased by Debbie Reynolds when MGM sold the majority of their costumes and props in 1970. The dress was ultimately sold to a private bidder when Reynold's put her collection up for auction in 2011.   Share this post with someone who loves musicals! Bit.ly/VicEd147

Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)
Tumblr media
The songs of Meet Me in St. Louis are iconic; the kind you never imaged had a first appearance. They're so ingrained in our culture you just assumed they always existed. As a bonus, they’re performed by Judy Garland. That's something to get excited about. I've often seen it listed as one of the "Greatest Christmas Movies Ever". Of this title, I'm not so sure. It's not that the film isn't great; it's that calling this a Christmas movie is a stretch. Either way, the film has a breezy, cheery, lighthearted tone - maybe a little bit too lighthearted if you’re unaccustomed to musicals from the 1940s.
As St. Louis readies itself for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (better known today as the World’s Fair) in the spring of 1904, the Smith family enjoys simple comforts. Eldest daughter Rose (Lucille Bremer) awaits a marriage proposal from Warren Sheffield (Robert Sully) all the way in New York. Second-oldest Esther (Judy Garland) pines for the handsome boy next door, John Truitt (Tom Drake). Lon Jr. (Henry H. Daniels, Jr.) is also looking for love, while young Tootie (Margaret O’Brien) wants nothing more than to play outside with her friends.
With this review, I hope to give you an idea of what to expect from the film so that you may enjoy it. This is a good movie whose plot is basically non-existent. The biggest conflict comes when Alonzo Smith (Leon Ames) announces to his wife Anna (Mary Astor) and children that he’s received a promotion at work and that they may have to move. Most of the time, you’re following Esther as she tries to get John Truitt’s attention, Tutti as she goes trick-or-treating with her friends, and the family as a whole as they celebrate Christmas, worry about what dad will say when he hears Rose is receiving a phone call from a man, etc. That's right; while Meet Me in St. Louis has a scene set at Christmas, that's only because there was a Christmas Holiday between the summer of 1903, and the spring of 1904.
Meet Me in St. Louis plays out like a trip through a photo album with grandma. You learn about these people from long ago through ordinary stories. Much of the fun comes from seeing how things used to be done. You can tell Halloween has changed A LOT from what it used to be. No wonder, considering the trouble the kids get into here.
While it played, I kept wondering when the conflict would begin, when the thing that makes this movie a classic would kick-off. This is not that kind of movie. There aren’t really ups and downs, it’s just a journey through simple, pleasant times. It’s the best memories from long ago, brought to life through loveable characters and excellent songs. The musical numbers are all show-stoppers, with memorable lyrics, tunes, and performances from Garland and her co-stars. The scenes between Esther and John are romantic in their simplicity, which makes them feel like they’re your story. Most of our relationships didn’t come from grandiose events like the one in The Notebook, they came from ordinary ones like this. Visually, it pops with rich, brilliant colors that make it feel like a dream.
Meet Me in St. Louis can feel a little long at 113 minutes, though I suspect my restlessness came from incorrect expectations going in. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (yes, this is where it comes from) is a staple of the season but if you sit there waiting for it to come on, you’ll be waiting a long time. This is not so much "A Can't-Miss Christmas Movie" and more of “A Can’t-Miss Movie Musical” or “A Can’t-Miss Trip Down Memory Lane Movie”. Whichever way you categorize it, there’s a lot to like, regardless of the season. (December 14, 2020)

On this day in 1941, The Maltese Falcon premiered in New York City. Seen by many as the first major film noir, this is the film that established Humphrey Bogart as a leading man. It also solidified Bogie’s life-long friendship and creative partnership with John Huston, who made his directorial debut with this film. Bogie ended up working with each of the other main cast members (Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet, Mary Astor) in several other films. Proving that the third time is the charm (earlier versions were filmed in 1931 and 1936), this film is truly the stuff that dreams are made of. #themaltesefalcon #humphreybogart #peterlorre #maryastor #sydneygreenstreet #johnhuston #filmnoir #premiere #nyc #newyork #oldhollywood #classicfilm #warnerbros https://www.instagram.com/p/Boe-aBQF_wz/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1er6fwjv0v60f
