Scotland v Netherlands: World Cup 1978, first group stage — live!
Minute-by-minute retro coverage of Group 4 game
The Fiver: Ally’s Army on the brink of elimination
Get in touch! Email [email protected]
2.20pm GMT
The pointlessly stubborn Ally MacLeod has finally seen sense, selecting Graeme Souness for the first time in the campaign. Souness and his Liverpool team-mate Kenny Dalglish combined for the goal that recently won Liverpool the European Cup at Wembley, so it’s been something of a surprise that he’s not featured before. MacLeod admits he should have selected him against Iran. Too late? Probably. Anyway, he’s one of four changes to the team held by the Iranians, coming in along with Aberdeen’s Stuart Kennedy, Tom Forsyth of Rangers, and Derby County’s Bruce Rioch, who reclaims the captain’s armband from Archie Gemmill. Out go Sandy Jardine of Rangers, Manchester United striker Lou Macari, and Nottingham Forest duo Kenny Burns and John Robertson.
Ernst Happel, the Austrian coach who won the European Cup with Feyenoord in 1970 and is now in charge of Holland, makes one change to the side that drew 0-0 with Peru. Arie Haan makes way for Johnny Rep.
2.15pm GMT
Scotland: Alan Rough, Stuart Kennedy, Willie Donachie, Bruce Rioch, Tom Forsyth, Martin Buchan, Archie Gemmill, Asa Hartford, Joe Jordan, Graeme Souness, Kenny Dalglish. Subs: Jim Blyth, Derek Johnstone, Lou Macari, John Robertson, Kenny Burns.
Holland: Jan Jongbloed, Wim Suurbier, Wim Rijsbergen, Ruud Krol, Jan Poortvliet, Johan Neeskens, Wim Jansen, Johnny Rep, Rene van der Kerkhof, Willy van der Kerkhof, Rob Rensenbrink. Subs: Piet Schrijvers, Piet Wildschut, Johan Boskamp, Dick Nanninga, Ernie Brandts.

The Drunken City by Adam Bock follows three twenty-somethings who head to the city for a wild bachelorettes' night out. After one too many drinks, their blissful naïveté quickly descends into an inebriated spectacle of uncertainty. The truth, like liquor, can be disorienting and the city like a beast that pushes you to the brink.

Jarvis / Kaplan Cup 2017
South Africa’s annual inter-provincial team championships are under way in Pretoria ...
Day FIVE SACD are first time Jarvis Cup winners ...
Tumblr media
And, it would seem that Gauteng won the women’s Kaplan Cup ...
Tumblr media
Day FIVE
SACD A and BizHub Central Gauteng A triumphed in the respective  men’s and women’s top sections of the GrowthPoint Interprovincial squash championship played this week in Pretoria.
For SACD,  with world champion Karim Gawad in the number 1 slot, it was the culmination of 10 years planning to lift the prestigious trophy.
In a match lasting  6 hours and 20 minutes  with the score standing at 2 matches all , SACD’s number 4  Rudi van Niekerk and his Central Gauteng counterpart Dylan Groenewald  were involved in  titanic struggle.  Games seesawed to 2 games each and it was van Niekerk clinched victory for SACD at 12-10 in the decider .
In the earlier matches J P Brits had drawn first blood for SACD beating Devon Hendrikse in 4 games but Thoboki Mohohlo levelled for Gauteng when he disposed of Christo Potgieter  also in 4 games. The clash between the number 1’s Gawad and Fares Dessouky delighted the packed gallery. Dessouky took a 14-12 8-11 11-8 lead but Gawad clawed his way back to level the games at two each and win the fifth 11-4. The fourth encounter saw the Central Gauteng number 5, Rudi Willemse beat Jimmy Schlebusch in 5 tight games to square the match score.
The Women’s A section- the Kaplan Cup – had the closest finish in the last decade with 4 teams : SACD A (43 points), Northerns A ( 46 points), Western Province A (42 points)  and BizHub Central Gauteng A (45 points)-  separated by only 4 points on the last day.
Northerns, spearheaded by Canadian Holly Naughton, ranked 38 in the world and 2017 S A National champion Milnay Louw, dashed SACD’s chances of a double victory winning 15-7  and then watched anxiously as Bizhub Central Gauteng played Western Province A. In the number 3 slots Lume Landman (CG)  and Karen Blom (WP) had a tough tussle with fortunes swinging both ways  but it was Landman who took the fifth game 11-7 to  give Central Gauteng a 1 nil lead.   Lume’s twin Elani  increased the lead to 2-0 by beating  Alex Fuller in 4 games. Nele Gilis, ranked 33 in the world  notched a win for Western province   by outplaying Cheyna Tucker (CG) in 4 games. Michelle Kohne sealed Central Gauteng’s victory when she defeated Gill van Vlaanderen and it was  Diana Haynes who added the fourth win as she outmanoeuvred Sacha West in straight games to bring  Central Gauteng’s tally to  18 points – just 2 more than Northerns but enough to lay claim and lay claim to the Kaplan Cup for a consecutive year .
Bizhub Central Gauteng celebrated  a successful year as they also won the Women’s B Section and the Men’s D section. Together with their second place in the Men’s A section and  a second place in the Men’s B section they walked away with the Gary Thompson trophy for the most successful province

Day THREE
Showing no effects of 3 plane flights – Amsterdam to Johannesburg : Johannesburg to London : London to Johannesburg -since Sunday evening in order to sort out a visa, Paul Coll, ranked 12 in the world, was in fine form as he defeated Fares Dessouky, ranked 10, in 4 games  when they met in the Western Province/Central  Gauteng clash in the 3rd round of the GrowthPoint Jarvis/Kaplan Cups interprovincial Squash Championship being played in Pretoria this week. However Coll’s win was not sufficient to save Western Province from suffering a 9-16 loss to the top seeded Gauteng team.
Dylan Groenewald and Rudi Willemse registered wins over JP van der Merwe and JoJo Shean respectively  before the experienced Rodney Durbach  winner of the gold medal in the 40-44 category in last year’s World Masters Championships outmanoeuvred Devon Hendrikse in 4 games to keep the coastal side in the match, trailing 1-2.
Presently studying at Trinity College in the USA, the Central Gauteng number 2 player , Thoboki Mohohlo and Clinton Leeuw(WP),  also based in America , were involved in a titanic struggle but it was the Gauteng who edged through in 5 games to give the tie to Central Gauteng.
Midlands which had surprised the more favoured Western Province side 16-10 on the first day upset Kwazulu Natal 15-9. Daniel Smith and Luke McFarland accounted for Adrian Hansen and Justin de Neef to give Midlands a 2-0 lead.  Andrew Martin registered a point for Kwazulu Natal by beating Justin Gouweloos before Josh Taylor sealed Midlands victory with a surprising  3-1 win over Gary Wheadon, the 2017 S A National Champion.  The match between the number 1’s went Kwazulu Natal’s way when Diego Elias, ranked 19 in the world  had the measure of a game Tristan Eysele.
In the final clash in the Jarvis A section Karim Gawad, ranked 2 in the world led the SACD team to an 18-8 win over Free State. Gawad was forced to 5 games by fellow Egyptian Ramit Tandon who has been studying in the USA.
In the Kaplan Cup (Women’s A Section) BizHub Central Gauteng who had suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Northerns on Tuesday bounced back with a 17-8 win against SACD A.
Elani Landman, Diana Haynes  and Michelle Kohne each registered wins over Alexa Pienaar, Jacqui Ryder and Cara Fourie respectively to give Gauteng the win. It was Lauren Siddall and Lizelle Goosen who notched victories for SACD against Cheyna Tucker and Lume Landman.
In the other clash Western Province still reeling from their unexpected  loss to SACD were in rampant mod and notched a 17-8 win over Eastern Province.
Matches  start at 9h00 with a second session t 13h30 on the penultimate day on Thursday 13th July at Prtoria Couty Club, Harlequins and Pretoria High School Old Boys.

SACD continue to dominate in Pretoria
The S A Country Districts Men’s A and Women’s A  squash teams with Karim Gawad and Lauren Siddall at the helm, continued their complete dominance of the GrowthPoint Jarvis and Kaplan Cups in Pretoria today  when they handed out whitewash 20-3 and 20-1 victories against Midlands A and Eastern Province  A teams, respectively.

GI Joe Day in Pretoria
Midlands A, which had upset Western Province in the first round on Monday, found themselves completely at sea and only managed to scrape together 3 games against their  powerful opponents. In the number 3 slot,  JP Brits won the first game easily 11- 4 against Justin Gouweloos but was pushed to 15-13 in the second game before Gouweloos faded and bowed out 4-11 in the third.    The next match saw Midlands’ Daniel Smith take the first game off SACD’s Rudi van Niekerk before van Niekerk dominated the play, running out a 3-1 winner.  For SACD, Jimmy Schlebusch and Christo Potgieter, notched 3-1 wins against Luke McFarland and Josh Taylor respectively and it was left to the World number 2 player, Egyptian, Karim Gawad to  defeat Tristan Eysele, as SACD registered their second full house of 20 points.
Western Province , which will be strengthened by the appearance of the World number 12 New Zealander Paul Coll, who lands today in Johannesburg having got an emergency visa, may be lucky to stave off relegation as  Free State A inflicted a 17-4 victory on them with only Rodney Durbach able to save some face when he defeated the Free State Number 2 player Reinhold Hergeth in straight games. Western province have 10 points from 2 matches which places them in a  dicey zone.
Last year’s winners Kwazulu Natal suffered another defeat – this time at the hands of BizHub Central Gauteng A – 7-18.  For Kwazulu Natal ,Diego Elias, ranked 19, in the word surprised when he accounted for 10th ranked Fares Dessouky in 4 games but apart from this win, only Justin de Neef pushed his Gauteng opponent Rudi Willemse  to 5 games. Dylan Groenewald, Devon Hendrikse and Thoboki Mohohlo added to the Gauteng tally  by outplaying Adrian Hansen, Andrew Martin and Gary Wheadon.
In the past 25 years, two provinces – Central Gauteng with 12 wins and Western Province with 9, have dominated the Kaplan Cup. The first day ( Monday) saw Western Province beaten 16-10 by Northerns and the second round (Tuesday) had Northerns outplay  Central Gauteng to the tune of 16-8, although the result could so easily have gone the other way .  Diana Haynes (CG)accounted for Megan Page 3-2 while Lume Landman cantered through 3-0 against  Christine Ferreira to give Central Gauteng an early 2-0 lead. Northerns Hannelize Human then beat Michelle Kohne 3-0  to put them on the score board. The clash between the number 2 players  Northerns’  Milnay Louw, the 2016 and 2017 S A National champion and Elani Landman, presently based in the USA was the turning point. Louw took the first game 11-8 but Landman retaliated, winning the next two 11-3 11-8. Determined play by Louw had her level  at 2 games all and win the decider 11-6 to level matches at 2-1 all and games at 8 each.
Ranked 38 in the world Canadian Holly Naughton clinched the match for Northerns outplaying Central Gauteng’s captain, Cheyna  Tucker in straight games.
Matches continue tomorrow with 2 sessions (9h00 and 13h30 ) at the 3 venues- Pretoria Country Club, Harlequins and Pretoria High School Old Boys.

Jarvis / Kaplan Cup 2017 on Facebook
Monday 10th July, Day ONE
Newly promoted to the Jarvis A section , Midlands and SACD A  with World champion Karim Gawad at the helm provided the fireworks on the first day of the GrowthPoint Jarvis/Kaplan Cups interprovincial squash championships  being played in Pretoria.
Tumblr media
Playing without their number 1 player Paul Coll of New Zealand, who had not obtained a visa before coming to South Africa, Western Province players were astounded as Midlands  number 3,4 and 5 players Justin Gouweloos, Daniel Smith and Luke McFarland  accounted for JP van der Merwe, JoJo Shean and Thean Toerien in straight sets respectively to take an  unassailable 3-0 match lead.  Rodney Durbach, runner-up in the recent GrowthPoint S A National Championships salvaged some pride for the coastal province  edging through 11-9 in the decider against Josh Taylor while Clinton Leeuw, now  based in the USA beat Tristan Eysele, the Midlands number 1  in 3 games.
In the last nine years Western Province and Kwazulu Natal have dominated the event with Kwazulu Natal capturing the title 5 times and Western Province. But 2017 saw Kwazulu Natal suffer a  similar fate as Western Province as they were bundled out by 20 points to 6  by a determined SACD A team.  The first encounter had JP Brits outplay Andrew Martin in 4 games followed by Rudi van Niekerk in a  very tough encounter edge through in 5 games against stalwart Adrian Hansen. The SACD number 5 Jimmy Schlebusch gave SACD the winning edge as he defeated Justin de Neef by 3 games to love.
Christo Potgieter, the SACD number 2, was involved in a tough tussle with the 2017 S A National champion Gary Wheadon edging though 11-9 in the decider  . And it was left to the World Champion Karim Gawad to finish the whitewash  as he ousted the 2014 World Junior Champion, Diego Elias in 4 interesting games.
The third match in the A section had the more favoured Bizhub Central Gauteng A side given a torrid time by Free State A, led by Egyptian Ramit Tandon, which resulted in a 16-10 win for  Central Gauteng. In the women’s A section – the Kaplan Cup- SACDA had a narrow 15-10 win over Western Province A and Northenrs A with Canadian Holly Naughton, ranked 38 in the world , in the number 1 slot register  an easy 20-3 win over Eastern Province A.
Play in the 4 men’s and 2 women’s sections continues tomorrow at Pretoria Country Club, Harlequins and Pretoria High School ld Boys starting at 9h00.
