the late great and house music pioneer, dj frankie knuckles, once said that house was disco’s revenge. and he wasn’t lying. but in the years between the racists- and homophobic-driven disco backlash in 1979 and the rise of house music in the late 1980’s, black, latinx and lgbtq club goers were building the queendom for the eventual reign of house music. and those building blocks included the sound of electro and freestyle music. when most people think of freestyle music – that is those who actually know or who are willing admit that they know what it is – they associate the complex genre of hard electro beats, loud bass drunks, orchestra hits and latin percussions exclusively with latinx or italian communities. but like disco, freestyle music has its roots in black music. at the start of the 1980’s, the state of dance music was wobbly at best. while the genre still thrived underground, it was seen as poison at the mainstream level. that was until the introduction of the roland tr-808 drum machine. one of the breakout songs to utilize this magic of of the 808 was afrika bambaataa’s 1982 hit “planet rock.” the song not only forged a new direction for hip-hop but it forever changed the sound of music. electro music, which was widely referred to as “breakdance music” in the early 1980’s, exploded on r&b radio with songs “one more shot” by c-bank featuring Jenny Burton and “play at your risk” and eventually in pop radio after the monstrous success of “let the music play” in 1983. and black artists were at the forefront of the movement. here are 15 songs that played a critical role in the history of freestyle music.

C-BANK “ONE MORE SHOT” 1983

afrika bambaataa & the soul sonic force’s 1982 hit “planet rock” sonically changed the sound of music. in 1983 c-bank, a studio project created by producer john robie, released “one more shot” featuring jenny burton. it helped launch the electro music genre.

PLANET PATROL “PLAY AT YOUR OWN RISK” 1983

“play at your risk” by planet patrol is one of the most brilliant electro songs. released in 1983 and produced by the same team that delivered “planet rock”, soul patrol’s vocal performance on “play at your risk” masterfully walked the line between doo-wop and electro.

SHANNON “LET THE MUSIC PLAY” 1983

“let the music play” introduced the electro sound that later birthed the freestyle genre to the masses. released in 1983, the song peaked inside the top 10 on both the pop & r&b charts making shannon the mother of freestyle music.

XENA “ON THE UPSIDE” 1983

in 1983 world renowned vocalist lisa fischer (yes, that lisa fischer!) made her solo debut with the barbosa & ligget produced “on the upside” under the stage name “xena.” the song was a minor club hit in the US and UK.

CHAKA KHAN “MY LOVE IS ALIVE” 1984

after dominating r&b/funk music in the late 1970’s, chaka khan rebranded herself as a one of electro music’s leading vocalists with her 1984 album “i feel for you.” one of the album’s most slammin’ tracks was the john robie produced “my love is alive.”

SYLVESTER “ROCK THE BOX” 1984

“rock the box” was the late great sylvester’s foray into the 808 drum machine universe after helping to introduce electronic dance with his 1979 hit “you make me feel (mighty real).” released in october 1984, “rock the box” proved that sylvester could pack the dance floors in the post-disco era.

LOLEATTA HOLLOWAY “CRASH GOES LOVE” 1984

loleatta holloway’s 1980 club hit “love sensation” is one of the most sampled songs in history featured prominently on marky mark and the funky bunch’s 1991 #1 pop hit “good vibrations.” loleatta reached #5 on the dance chart in 1984 with the arthur baker produced “crash goes love.”

CAROL LYNN TOWNES “99 1/2″ 1984

featured on the 1984 motion picture “breakin’” soundtrack (a movie about a white woman trying to appropriate the breakdancing movement), “99 1/2” was a slammin’ electro cover of the alton mcclain & destiny’s 1979 disco tune. townes’ cover peaked inside the top 10 on the dance chart and just outside of the top 20 on the r&b chart.

NOLAN THOMAS “YO, LITTLE BROTHER” 1984

before milli vanilli pulled off one of pop music’s biggest scams in 1990, “nolan thomas” pulled a similar stunt in 1984. elan lanier, a black studio singer recorded vocals for “yo, little brother” but when it came time to release the single, a non-black performer was chosen to appear in the video and be the face of “nolan thomas.” produced by chris barbosa and mark ligget, “yo, little brother” reached #26 on the r&b chart and #57 on the hot 100.

FONDA RAE “TOUCH ME (ALL NIGHT LONG)” 1984

years before cathy dennis made “touch me (all night long)” an international hit, fonda rae’s original version was a club hit in 1984 peaking #5 on the dance chart. it was also featured in the 1985 “a nightmare of elm street” sequel “freddy’s revenge” – a horror film with the most gayest and homoeroticism subtext of all time.

TRINERE “I KNOW YOU LOVE ME” 1984

trinere’s 1984 miami-bass hit “i know you love me” was produced by the genre’s creator pretty tony, the mastermind behind 2 of freestyle music’s most enduring hits “when i music” (1983) & “lookout weekend” (1984) by debbie deb. “i know you love me” was re-released in 1986 and reached #69 on the r&b chart.

NAYOBE “PLEASE DON’T GO” 1985

released in 1985 when nayobe was just 15 years old, “please don’t go” blended pop, dance, electro and latin music sensibilities. the song set the format for the latin-freestyle genre and every freestyle song that have since followed.

HANSON & DAVIS “HUNGRY FOR YOUR LOVE” 1986

the freestyle/house duo hanson & davis consisted of two former studio session singers. their sole hit was the pulsating “hungry for your love.” the song garnered heavy rotation at r&b radio and peaked at #16 on the dance chart in 1986.

JOYCE SIMS “ALL & ALL” 1986

by the time singer/songwriter joyce sims hit the club scene in 1986, electro began to morph into a more house & latin-freestyle sound. joyce’s debut single, the matronix produced “all & all”, was the perfect blend of the aforementioned sounds. the song would become one of the first freestyle songs to chart inside the top pop 20 in the UK.

MONET “MY HEART GETS ALL THE BREAKS” 1987

“my heart gets all the breaks” is, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest freestyle songs of all time. released in 1987, the song peaked inside the top 20 on the dance chart and #48 on the r&b chart.

by the mid 1980’s, latinx artists like lisa lisa, the cover girls, safire, tka and nayobe had merged the electro sound with latin music sensibilities making way for the latin hip-hop sound that would later be identified as freestyle music. house music and new jack swing replaced the electro sound in black radio by 1988. today we honor of the electro/breakdance/freestyle music genres and the critical role they played in keeping Black, latinx and queer dance floors packed in the 1980s.

The Masked Singer Season 3 Episode 2: Group A Playoffs (Thoughts and Guesses)

Hello, my fellow Masked Singer lovers! Yesterday was the playoffs for Group A of The Masked Singer, where 5 masks compete for 4 spots in the championship round (where the top 3 go into the final 9), so you know what time it is: me giving my predictions and opinions (I am adding opinions on performances and stuff too since it will be boring for me repeating the same freaking guesses over and over again even though I am inserting my little direction of this week’s batch of clues). Ok, here we go!

Let’s start with the reveal of the day... **SPOILER ALERT Y’ALL** don’t say I didn’t warn you... The person who got eliminated was **DRUMROLL PLEASE**

The Llama

Who was revealed to be **AGAIN SPOILER I SAY**

DREW FREAKING CAREY (aka Price is Right dude... well that’s how I know him)

I guessed it!!! Peep my recap from Monday... I knew it guys, it was kind of obvious but here are his clues from this episode:

They had superlative clues after the performance and his was “Most Likely to be Near Firing Cannons” = he was in the Marine Corp Reserves

In the clue package, he was playing an accordion in front of a live studio audience, pointing to his shows that he has done in front of a live studio audience, like Price is Right and Whose Line is it Anyways.

As for my opinion on his performance, I thought it was an average performance so it was no shock that he went home. I think he is a really good singer for someone who isn't a professional singer. Honestly, his costume was hilarious and his run on the show was great, especially seeing him move his strap on booty lmao. (Btw the song he sang was It’s Not Unusual by Tom Jones)

Anyways, now that that's done, let’s get into the 4 remaining masks who I still need to guess.

1. The White Tiger

Ok so let’s start with the White Tiger’s Performance: He sang Good Vibrations by Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch and honestly, he isn’t a great vocalist, which is expected because he isn’t a professional vocalist at all. However, his dancing made the performance for me and kind of made up for the vocals he lacked (sorry but the guy can rap at the very least, he cannot sing, he could talk sing or rap but singing isn’t something he should be doing full time, which is completely fine because it isn’t for everyone and he seems like a cool guy, no shade). Anyways, yeah, having said that, this is who I believe he is:

ROB “GRONK” GRONKOWSKI

Why do you think that, you may ask? Well, take a look at the clues:

All throughout the clue package, he mentions that he “loves a good block party” and he loves to dance. Well, Gronk is very well known for his insane block parties as I said last week so everything is tying together here.

Boombox in the clue package: Patriots went viral with a video of them dancing and celebrating their Super Bowl victory with a boombox blasting music

Superlative: Most Likely to go to the mat for a friend= he did do a wrestling match with one of his close friends

2. Miss Monster

Performance: Miss Monster performed Fancy by Reba McEntire and I gotta say I loved how her voice sounded with the song. Like, the song is a typical country song, but her voice isn't what you will associate with country music but the blend of both is so awesome to watch. You can tell that she is an experienced vocalist, kind of gives me the same vibe the Flower aka Patti LaBelle gave me last season, such an iconic vocalist. So, of course my guess has to be the legendary....

CHAKA KHAN

Ok so let’s look at the clues aka the reasoning behind my guess:

In clue package, we see a queen chess piece and she is the queen of funk as we mentioned last week.

Butterfly drawing = has a song called “Hot Butterfly”

Superlative: Most Likely to be in the presence of royalty = she did meet the queen in 2009 and she is royalty in the music industry

3. The Kangaroo

Performance: Kangaroo performed You Know I’m No Good by Amy Winehouse and wow that song was perfect for her like on point with her voice. Her voice is amazing, which I never expected from looking at the mask. Ok, so my guess for this one is....

JORDYN WOODS

Ok so, I have debated back and forth with this one, the only doubt I have is the voice because I have never ever heard her sing... I searched on YT and nothing popped up of her singing, which is odd. It would make sense if her voice was like the llama or the white tiger, good but not amazing. However, she sounds like a professional singer so idk but these clues add up:

In the beginning of the clue package, it says “Kangaroo Kourt,” which could be alluding to her previous association with the Kardashians

We see makeup in the bench and Jordyn did have a makeup collaboration with Kylie Cosmetics and does makeup tutorials on YouTube

Also, she made a Fresh Prince reference saying she wanted a “fresh start” while playing basketball because her father was a sound engineer on that show.

Superlative: Most Likely to Appear in a List with Seal and Mike Tyson... what I have seen about this is that this is a list of celebrities with gap teeth (which she has since fixed with dental work)

4. The Turtle

Performance: I am gonna say it, Turtle is literally my favorite singer in this group of masked celebrities. He is so smooth and his voice is like butter. He sang “Say You Won’t Let Go” by James Arthur and I am sure everyone in the audience was in a trance after that performance. His voice is so amazing, but also so recognizable which is why I think he is the one, the only, the ever so dreamy...

JESSE MCCARTNEY

Ok so I am so sure about this, you cannot change my mind, but if you insist, we’ll look at the clues:

In the clue package, there’s a menu with Ginger Snaps= his mother is named Ginger; Slow Cooked Beets= had a band called Sugar Beats before Dream Street

Also, there is something written on the chalk board that says “Don’t Rave Ever At My School Turtle,” which if you take the first letters of each word, spell out DREAM ST, the name of his former boy band back in the day.

Another thing I found interesting was that he was the voice of Leonardo in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which could be the source of inspiration for the costume he’s wearing.

Superlative: Most Likely to Hunt for Booty = Pirates = he did a couple of acting roles and his first movie was a pirate movie

I just looked up the Bud Bundy looking kid from Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch: Make My Video and it turns out that he’s played named roles in 3 Tarantino movies and wrote the screenplays for Scott Pilgrim, the 21 Jump Street movies, and the upcoming Tropic Thunder sequel

Here’s a hot take from conservative pundit and massive transphobe music fan, Ben Shapiro. Normally I would tackle the more serious topics Ben discusses, but this really felt like it deserved a response.

Though, if I wanted to take a more serious angle, I suppose I could make the argument that rap is a huge part of the black community’s cultural identity & heritage and by belittling it, Ben is insulting and diminishing one of a marginalized group’s main creative outlets that they use to communicate their struggles.

But that would be racist! Ben isn’t racist! He is constantly explaining over and over just how not-racist he is. Which is what all non-racists have to do.

This has nothing to do with racism and Ben has some solid FACTS explaining why.

HE LIKES JAZZ, OKAY?

AND OPINIONS ARE NEVER RACIST.

I GUESS.

EVEN THOUGH HE SAID IT WAS A FACT.

So, to be clear, this will just be a not-serious analysis about Ben’s totally not-racist FACT that rap is not-music.

Let’s get this not-party started...

You see, Ben is famous for his motto, “Facts don’t care about your feelings.”

He’s even leveraged his factual wisdom and made it into merchandise.

That’s a real thing people can buy. It even has 6 whole reviews on Amazon!

Beyond the Box rated it with 3 stars saying, “It's okay but small.”

(Aww, just like Ben!)

And Tim S. described the shirt’s fit as “Liberals are destroying the country.”

(I’m pretty sure that means it’s a tad itchy.)

Before I saw Ben’s factual tweet, I really FELT like rap was an amazing musical artform. It took poetry and made it musical. It gave people a new way to express themselves that didn’t require expensive music lessons or even instruments. A friend could just bang on a table while you let it flow. It made creating music more accessible. And as long as you had good rhythm you could participate. It FELT groundbreaking at the time.

The very first cassette tape I bought was Good Vibrations by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. (I know that isn’t a great start, but I was like 10, okay?) The very first compact disc I bought was 2 Legit 2 Quit by MC Hammer. (Don’t laugh, he was the shit in 1991.) As I reached my formative years, I started listening to DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, Beastie Boys, and House of Pain.

I jump’d around. (squeeEEEEEee)

But as some of you may have noticed, most of my musical selections were very mainstream. You’ve probably also noticed that I am very... white.

To this day, even! I think it is a chronic condition.

My skin is near translucent due to lack of sunlight. I often say things like “indubitably” and “bloviate” and “I’m sure this chicken will be fine with minimal seasoning.” And at one point I owned the entire Creed discography.

I was in desperate need of a Hip Hop education.

Now using the official Rules of Republican Conduct™, if I want to talk about something with a racial component, all I need is a single black friend. This will absolve me of any consequences.

Interesting Froggie Fun Fact... I went to a mostly black high school!

That’s TWO black friends!

Shawn is the one teaching me a complicated handshake I instantly forgot. And Marcus is photobombing us in the back there.

I wish I could say our school was super progressive and everyone got along dandy. But in the mid-90s that just wasn’t the case. There were no major conflicts, but a lot of the white kids would sort of... self segregate. They’d all choose lockers in the same area. They’d sit in the same area at lunch and in class. And not a lot of them would interact with black kids outside of school.

That said, I did not get the segregation memo. I got along with everyone. I’m not saying I was some amazing colorblind trailblazer crossing racial boundaries at every turn. My locker was in the white section too. And I only had two black friends (not pictured) that I hung out with outside of school.

But I do think humor can break down a lot of barriers. And I used comedy to cross those invisible lines from time to time.

Do you remember “Yo Mama” jokes?

Like uhhh... Yo mama so old, her social security number is 1. Yo mama so lazy, she stuck her nose out the window and let the wind blow it. Yo mama so classless, she’s a Marxist utopia.

You get it.

Before school or before class, a lot of kids would have these competitions. They would face off with their best motherly insults and typically the person who received the loudest “OH DAAAAAAMMMMN!” would be declared the winner.

One day I just kind of decided to make fun of Shawn’s mama. After a few seconds of stunned silence I got the loudest OH DAMN of anyone and we were suddenly friends. And then his friends were my friends too. Our friendship didn’t go outside the school premises, but it was still a lot of fun joking around with them at lunch or when we were supposed to be doing homework.

Shawn and I started a sort of cultural exchange. He would tell me about all of the amazing music he was into. And I explained why Batman: The Animated Series was not a kid’s cartoon. IT WAS ANIMATION. Says it right in the name.

He introduced me to a wide range of artists of color. Old and new (at the time). We talked about Boyz II Men, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Prince. He introduced me to Mary J Blige who I follow to this day. And Aaliyah :(

He also told me about not-music.

Ya know... rappers.

I’ll be honest, sometimes this was challenging for me. I did not like or understand everything he suggested. I had a lot of racist baggage leftover from an all-white Catholic elementary school and my brain resisted for longer than I care to admit. But after seeing Shawn’s passion for this not-music, I became rap-curious and willing to keep an open mind.

Let me try to name-drop from memory...

Puff Daddy, Lauryn Hill, Wu-Tang Clan, Naughty By Nature, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Dr. Dre, Biggie Smalls, Ice Cube, and some guy named Tupac Shakur. You’ve probably never heard of him.

He’d even sneak a Walkman in his backpack so he and his friends could sample his latest acquisitions.

He’d be like, “Hey Ben, you want to listen to some Master P?” And I’d be like, “Sure! You wanna listen to Nine Inch Nails?” And he’d be like, “Naw, I’m good.”

Okay, so the cultural exchange could be a bit one-sided at times. But Batman bonded us all.

Admittedly, when I was at home, I still mostly listened to Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Stone Temple Pilots on repeat. And I do not listen to a great deal of Hip Hop these days. Mostly due to lack of guidance. I don’t have a Shawn in my life anymore. (But that Cardi B Money song was crazy good. And I’m not just saying that cuz the video had boobs.)

Shawn was able to get me to a place where even if I didn’t like what I was listening to, I understood why other people enjoyed it. I really learned to appreciate rap and many of Shawn’s suggestions made an appearance on my super rad 90s Winamp playlist.

Sometimes when I was having a bad day, it was nice to have a good day to fall back on.

So when I was very whitely bobbing my head to the beat of that communal Walkman, I didn’t think my friends were stupid. I didn’t think I was stupid. I didn’t FEEL stupid.

But facts are facts. And my feels about facts don’t matter.

You see, Ben Shapiro is known for being a master debater. You can find videos of him CRUSHING LIBRULS WITH LOGIC. Or DESTROYING FEMINISTS with TRU FACTS. Perhaps even DEMOLISHING SOCIALISTS with STATISTICS.

His big Harvard brain is pretty relentless when it comes to DESTROYMOLISHING The Left.

He’s great at taking standard conservative talking points, couching them in academic speak, and peppering them with dubious facts that don’t always hold up to scrutiny after the fact. Some might argue he cherry picks his opponents and the subject matter, creates scenarios where his point of view will be well received, and uses bad faith tactics to give the appearance of the upper hand.

But that would be speculation and this post is all about FACTS.

And Ben’s facts are too powerful to dispute. I doubt anyone is up to the challenge. Not even a transgender woman with epic makeup, glorious costumes, creative lighting schemes, and a degree in philosophy could take him to task.

It’s just... unpossible.

SO... let’s see Ben defend “rap isn’t music” using his fancy debating skillz. It took him 6 years to come up with this, so I’m betting it’s bulletproof.

OH I SEE.

He plays CLASSICAL music.

If you’ll allow me to expound his logic, being a classically trained musician makes you more specialer than a regular musician. It makes him an arbiter of what is and is not music. I forgot that classical musicians were automatically given that power.

I know Ben only ever presents facts, so I’d like to take him at his word, but I think I’d like to see this music master perform something. Just to be sure he has the proper classical credentials to make these bold claims.

Here is a music video he produced for The Daily Wire. Clearly a high budget homage to one of the most thrilling television themes in recent history.

Did anyone else feel like they were watching 3 robots play the blandest arrangement ever conceived? Or was that just me? SUCH ENERGY.

I will say, those special effects were... something.

And Ben really PWNED CNN. I’m sure they felt that slice all the way in their Atlanta headquarters.

Ben, if you’re reading this, that video was totally funny in the way you intended. People are definitely laughing with you and not at you. I didn’t cringe even a little.

But does this prove that Ben is a proper CLASSICAL musician? With all the power and privileges that entails?

Does he have the authority to judge musical worthiness?

Despite his robotic performance, I suppose he did hit all the correct notes and everything.

Is music like facts? Does music care about your feelings?

I think what we need is a comparison. Something we can judge Ben’s performance against in order to gauge his level of classical musicianship.

This is Tina Guo.

She is a Chinese-American immigrant from Shanghai. She moved here at the age of 5. She probably was able to sneak in because there wasn’t a border wall yet. She is taking the jobs of American classical musicians. Probably why Ben isn’t in a top-tier symphony orchestra as we speak.

Tina is a cello prodigy who was trained classically. She attended the USC Thornton School of Music for professional cello studies on a full scholarship where she studied under Nathaniel Rosen and Eleonore Schoenfeld--some of the most influential cellists of the 20th century.

She also made a huge splash on YouTube casually playing Flight of the Bumblebee as a teenager. No biggie. I’m sure Ben can play that too.

Oh, and do you remember that badass Wonder Woman theme written by famous composer Hans Zimmer?

That was her playing the lead.

Now for the comparison.

Watch Librul Immigrant DESTROY the Game of Thrones theme that she arranged ALL BY HERSELF without the help of a BIG STRONG MAN.

So here is the dilemma.

We have two CLASSICAL musicians who are at nearly identical skill levels...

HOWEVER... after some investigation...

It’s possible Tina Guo thinks rap... might be music.

THE EVIDENCE

One of her favorite ways to practice improvisation is to jam along with Hip Hop tracks she finds on YouTube.

Now, conservatives like Ben LOVE dictionary definitions. It’s their go-to debate tactic when trying to legitimize the idea of racism toward white folks. So let’s use the dictionary really quick.

When I looked up what this “jamming” word meant, it sent me to “jam session.” I was shocked by what I found.

Musicians? MUSIC? But those backing tracks she practiced to were used for rap non-music. BEN I AM CONFUSED.

I think I need to dig deeper.

After scouring the internet for almost 2 minutes I was able to find something even more shocking.

Here is LIBRUL CLASSICAL SNOWFLAKE IMMIGRANT FEMINIST MUSICIAN sharing the stage with a CUCK NON-MUSIC RAP ARTIST.

That kinda looks like Tina Guo... and LUPE FIASCO.

*DOUBLE GASP*

And I’ve double checked this... it seems this Lupe fellow is definitely a rapper.

WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?

I mean, she has her cello. And he has a microphone. But it’s a FACT that rap isn’t music. So I guess they are doing some experimental anti-music performance together.

I’m a little worried that Tina might be stupid.

Ben’s FACT clearly states if you think rap is music, then you are stupid.

And not only is Tina playing music near a rapper... I’m pretty sure she is playing music WITH a rapper.

That’s like... double stupid.

I really don’t know what to feel about these facts I’ve uncovered.

These FACTS kinda FEEL like bullshit.

At least I can take comfort in the absolute fact that Ben Shapiro is a solid 5 feet 9 inches tall. It gives me comfort knowing he can ride any roller coaster he wants.

Loleatta Holloway

Loleatta Holloway (/lɒlˈiːtə/; November 5, 1946 – March 21, 2011) was an American singer, mainly known for disco songs such as "Hit and Run" and "Love Sensation", both of which have been sampled extensively.

Biography

Holloway began singing gospel with her mother in the Holloway Community Singers and recorded with Albertina Walker in the Caravans gospel group. Holloway was also a cast member of the Chicago troupe of Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope. Around this time, she met her future producer, manager, and husband Floyd Smith, and recorded "Rainbow ’71" in 1971, a Curtis Mayfield song that Gene Chandler had recorded in 1963. It was initially released on the Apache label, but was picked up for national distribution by Galaxy Records.

In the early 1970s, Holloway signed a recording contract with the Atlanta-based soul music label Aware, part of the General Recording Corporation (GRC), owned by Michael Thevis. Holloway recorded two albums for the label, both of them produced by Floyd Smith — Loleatta (1973) and Cry to Me (1975). Her first single from the second album, the ballad, "Cry to Me" rose to #10 Billboard R&B and #68 on the Hot 100, but before the label could really establish Holloway, it went out of business.

Top Philadelphia arranger and producer Norman Harris signed Holloway in 1976 for his new label, Gold Mind, a subsidiary of New York's Salsoul Records. The first release from the album Loleatta was another Sam Dees ballad, "Worn Out Broken Heart," which reached #25 R&B, but the B-side, "Dreaming," climbed to #72 on the pop chart and launched her as a disco act.

She contributed vocals to "Re-Light My Fire" for Dan Hartman, who then wrote and produced the title track of her fourth and final album for Gold Mind, Love Sensation (1980). 18 of her songs charted on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, including four #1s. However, it was a ballad that proved to be another big R&B hit for her. "Only You" was written and produced by Bunny Sigler, who also sang with Holloway on the track, and it reached #11 in 1978.

In the early 1980s, she had another dance hit with "Crash Goes Love" (#5 on the U.S. Dance chart, #86 on the US R&B Chart). She also recorded one single, "So Sweet," for the fledgling house-music label DJ International Records. In the late 1980s, her vocals from "Love Sensation" were used in the UK #1 hit "Ride On Time" by Black Box. Holloway, however, was uncredited for her vocals and Holloway successfully sued the group, which led to an undisclosed court settlement in Holloway's favor.

In 1992, she also had a hit with dance band Cappella. There, she appeared billed as Cappella featuring Loleatta Holloway on the single "Take Me Away" (UK #25). Holloway's fortunes dramatically improved, however, when she had her first US #1 hit when Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch featured her vocals in the chart-topping "Good Vibrations" (1991). According to Andrew Barker in Variety(March 22, 2011), Holloway also performed with Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch to promote the single and she received full vocal credit as well as a share of the royalties. This was shortly after the backlash against various acts such as Milli Vanilli and the groups that used the vocals of Martha Wash, but refused to give her credit until she sued.

More recent dance chart entries included "What Goes Around Comes Around" (credited to "GTS Featuring Loleatta Holloway") in 2000, and "Relight My Fire" (credited to Martin featuring Holloway), which hit #5 in 2003. Whilst not a single, "Like a Prayer", a Madonna cover, was a track on the Madonna tribute album Virgin Voices. "Love Sensation '06" and reached #37 on the UK Singles Chart.

Death

Holloway died aged 64 on March 21, 2011 from heart failure. She is survived by her four children.

6 Habits From Mark Wahlberg's Schedule That Can Make You a Success

[embedded content] Its hard to find someone more successful at his career than Mark Wahlberg. Yes, Marky Mark. You might know him from tiny little films like Transformers or The Departed or The Italian Job or Boogie Nights. Or maybe you know him from his role as executive producer on shows like Entourage, Boardwalk Empire, or Ballers. Or maybe youve eaten at his burger joint, Wahlburgers. But most likely, you still listen to his early band, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. It seems like no matter what Mark puts his mind to he accomplishes. How does he do it? Well, I think his daily schedule has something to do with it. In a recent episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden, Mark reveals his typical daily schedule. And as the host of the show, James Corden, finds out, its not a walk in a park. My name is Brandon Turner, blog writer and podcast host from BiggerPockets.com and author of the upcoming 90 Days Of Intention Journal, and today I want to dive into six unique aspects of Marks schedule to see if we can become just. Little more successful because of it. OK, lets get to it. 1. Mark wakes up really, really early. As the video above shows, by waking up early, Mark is able to knock out one of his most important things of the day (which for an actor like Mark is working out) before his family even rouses. So I think its smart to ask yourself: If you woke up an hour or two earlier in the day, what vital task could you get accomplished? 2. Mark spends a moment in silent gratitude. Marks very first activity of the day isnt work, exercise, or even launching into an action. Its prayer time. In other words, Mark takes time each morning to be silent and be grateful. Gratitude has been shown in numerous studies to make people more successful, have a more positive outlook, and even exercise more regularlywhich brings us to number three. 3. Mark work outs early. As Mark says to James in The Late Late Show clip, The workouts going to suckbut youre going to go attack the rest of the day. Mark isnt making this up. By getting a workout in early, you may consume fewer calories and burn more fat throughout the day, Its also said to help you sleep better at night, and it can give you more mental energy while reducing depression and anxiety. In other words, by working out early, youre going to attack the rest of the day. Thanks, Mark. 4. Mark commits to the process. Look, Mark Wahlberg didnt naturally get his physique by accident. He works for it every dayand youre not going to find success by accident either. One thing Mark clearly understands is this simple principle: Results are the result of the process needed to get you there. In other words, whatever you want to achieve in lifefrom business success to weight loss to becoming a better spouseis preceded by some kind of process. Mark doesnt need to stress about getting in shape because he focuses on the process instead. So, what process can you begin consistency and persistently following that will lead to the results you want to see? 5. Mark schedules family time. I know this might sound odd from the onsetdo you really need to schedule time with your loved ones? Well, if they are important to you, why give them whatever is left? By being intentional about the time you spend with your family and friends, youll ensure that time is actually given. Props to you mark for making that a priority in your life. 6. Mark goes to bed early. Finally, Mark goes to bed early enough to make sure he can start the day the same way tomorrow. Getting enough sleep is vital to anyones pursuit of success. Research shows that reduced sleep can lead to higher levels of negative thinking, cause inflammation, and even make you look uglier. One study even showed that people who averaged less than seven hours of sleep a night were about three times more likely to develop the common cold. And one final note on Marks schedule: He has one. In other words, he doesnt leave it all to chance. He schedules the things that are important to him into his daily schedule. And you should do the same! Be intentional about your goals and plan them accordingly. You might even consider using a journal like The 90 Days of Intention Journal from BiggerPockets to do so.
