LOOKING FOR A NATURE BEYOND OUR ARTIFICIAL WORLD

In my latest projects, I am working on a dual understanding of the natural and the artificial world. Roads, woods, pieces of grass, tree trunks appear metaphorically in their photographic compositions as the last ghost of the real world. The resulting images are photographic montages but scenarios created by myself.

The series are conceptually situated between land art and a kind of performance. I´am showing different constellations of a possible forest and finally trying to awake the los spirit in a kind of performance creating a forest as timber, as a mythical forest, a firewood or as ufo landing pad. All this staged in a steril studio inbetween bare concret walls, awaken astonishment or scare, but last not least some kind of humor and seriousness.

[MAFD] MAPPING ACTIVE FIRE DATA :: ESTHER PIZARRO STUDIO from Markus Schroll on Vimeo.

[MAFD] :: Mapping Active Fire Data is part of an artistic research consisting of a cartographic, dynamic and interactive visualization of the forest fires that have plagued the earth’s surface during the past decade (2008-2017). Using data extracted from scientific sources, the project makes visible the wounds caused on the earth’s surface by the fires that are continuously burning. The installation uses graphics and cartography as vehicles for data visualization. The central part of [MAFD] is a matrix and lighting device, conceived as a screen to represent the dynamic evolution of forest fires in the investigated time frame. To this central nucleus, ten structures are connected, one per year, that make visible the monthly data and graphs based on three parameters: burned area, CO2 emissions, and number of fires. The installation aims to draw attention to an environmental problem; using the visual metaphor that artistic language possesses, to activate sensibilities, consciences and questions. MAFD is an immersive, dynamic and interactive artistic installation. The main core of the project are [MAFD] :: Planisphere and [MAFD] :: Graphic Atril (2008–2017). The viewer can interact with the core of the installation using a touch screen located on each of the lecterns, choosing the evolution of fires in a specific year. Light and new technologies play a major role in the installation, being responsible for the project’s interactivity and dynamism. Lastly, there is a sound element, which allows viewers to immerse themselves in an enveloping environment, creating an acoustic mise-en-scène of burning forests.
