HI hope you are well! sorry if you’ve already done something like this and i’ve missed it, but i was wondering if you had any recommendations for people who want to get into black widow comics? i have very little marvel comic knowledge but your posts have made me want to read about black widow and i’m not sure where to start
Hi @strangesickness!! I am great :D and I hope you are well too :)
Also, hi anon who asked the same thing! I hope you're well too! I'll answer everything here.
Tumblr media
Sorry for taking so long to reply to this... I was doing some reading and rereading of my own before making this post.
For a completionist reading list, I will refer to this link, which was recommended by someone here (I don't remember who, and I can't find my own post now 😭).
Note: I haven't read everything in that list, but I am randomly making my way through it. Also, I can speak more about Natasha's solos, so my rec list is mostly based on those.
In terms of personal preference and what I also consider important, I'd highlight the following: The Name of the Rose, Black Widow (2014) and Black Widow (2004).
The Name of the Rose
I think the last time I answered this question here, I recommended The Name of the Rose (Black Widow (2010) - #1-5, by Marjorie Liu) as a starting point, and I mostly still stand by that, in that if it's the only BW comic you'll ever read, read that one. I started with that one coming from the MCU, and I think it has everything that I like about Natasha: her protectiveness, ruthlessness, competence, and how much she *cares* about people and how that guides her actions. The art by Daniel Acuña is good too (though not my favorite, it serves the story well), but apart from the good characterization, what really shines is the prose itself. Some parts are very poetic, and I simply love the way Liu arranges words, I suppose.
This is my favorite comic book ever, and my only complaint is that Liu only wrote 5 issues of Black Widow and then never again... please bring her back!!!!
Note: BW2010 has another three issues and they are completely mid. Read them if you want, but I just want to make it clear that it's jarring to go from issues #1-5 to the rest of it lol, and i personally wouldn't recommend xD
Black Widow (2014)
If my complaint about The Name of the Rose is that it's too short, with Black Widow (2014) by Nathan Edmondson that is not an issue. This run is 20 issues long, and all of them are excellent! The characterization is spot-on, and once again, everything I love about Natasha is present here. Personally I think this is the run that goes deeper into her ethics, and the way Edmondson approaches the tragedy of her character and all the heartbreak and fucked-up-ness is very tasteful. Also, Liho (her cat) is in this run, and in a way that adds to her lore and characterization in a way that may be unexpected. Phil Noto's art is simply stunning (he's my favorite Natasha artist *by far*).
Personally, I consider The Name of the Rose and BW2014 *the* Black Widow comics, in terms of them being important and also good, but in a close third place comes Black Widow (2004).
Black Widow (2004)
Black Widow (2004) by Richard K. Morgan has some pretty important things of her lore appearing for the first time (I believe, anyone reading this please feel free to correct me) (like mind manipulation, more details about the Red Room, and interestingly, the pheromone thing from the BW movie comes from this comic too). I love the art style of Bill Sienkiewicz which is more artsy. Characterization-wise, what really shines here is the discussion of sexism. Defense of women is a huge thing for Natasha (you'll see that in The Name of the Rose and BW2014), but it's never as deeply discussed as it is here.
Now, there are other books that I liked, and that are solid, but that I simply don't find as good as the top tier books discussed above.
Black Widow (2016)
Black Widow (2016), by Chris Samnee and Mark Waid, is a fun run that has decent characterization but a somewhat repetitive plot (Natasha is on the run and all that, which I think both The Name of the Rose and BW2014 just do better... but then again, that's like, more than half her comics so it's not a completely fair complaint, I suppose). It has some Red Room lore, and I always love that. Samnee's art is really pretty to look at, too (some of the prettiest Nat is in this book, ngl). I definitely recommend it, because it's a solid run.
No Restraints Play (Black Widow 2019)
I recently read No Restraints Play, by Jen and Sylvia Soska, and I liked it a lot. I'd say it has a lot about what I love about Natasha that I already mentioned previously, but she's mentally less stable in this one, so compared to the rest of the recs here, she does more unhinged shit in this book (but not by much tbh... I think it's just the tone that gives that impression). I read it before reading Secret Empire and Tales of Suspense (discussed in more detail below), and I think that I didn't miss that much context that technically would be needed from those books.
Now, there's the section of "I like it because I ship Buckynat".
Captain America (2005)
Captain America (2005), by Ed Brubaker, is the book where Bucky comes back™. Natasha only appears from issue #27 onwards, so this is definitely a rec if are interested in the ship (although it is a very good run on its own, and obviously essential if you are interested in Bucky at all).
Winter Soldier (2012)
Winter Soldier (2012), by Ed Brubaker, features Natasha heavily, and while I don't love some of thing it does to her, I enjoy it for the ship and for the angst (it is also somewhat relevant for Natasha going forward, for example, the thing™ that happens here is referenced in Natasha's solos such as BW2014, but it isn't anything that you will be lost if you just google what happened if you want to skip this).
Moreover, books already mentioned previously, such as The Name of the Rose, BW2014 and BW2016 also have Buckynat content, but it's minor.
Apart from the three recs above, there are other comics that I really liked, though I can't say that all of them are exactly good.
Black Widow (1999) and Black Widow (2001)
So, are BW1999 and BW2001, by Devin Grayson, good? Ehhh. No. Specially in the case of BW1999 (the art of this one is also atrocious). Do they compel me? Immensely. I like these two because there's content of Natasha and Yelena being weird about each other. That's it. When I read them years ago I thought they were really mid *at best* (though I like the art style of BW2001 a lot), but on a reread a few months ago I got bitten by the Yelenat bug and developed a new appreciation for these minis.
Note: BW1999 is also Natasha's first solo, but in terms of characterization and lore it doesn't really establish a lot...
Secret Empire and Tales of Suspense
The gist is: Natasha dies in Secret Empire and then gets revived in tales of Suspense #103-104
I know most people hate Secret Empire. To be honest, I don't know a lot of Marvel beyond Natasha and some Bucky and Steve to hate on this properly, but the common complaint appears to be that everyone is OoC... except for Natasha.
I'm not gonna lie, I blorbo-read this one, asking "where is she" whenever Natasha wasn't in the panels xD (and I also read it because I want to write a meta-post and it seemed important for the theme I have in mind). All that being said, I think it has some *fantastic* Natasha moments... so make of that what you will.
Tales of Suspense #103-104 are incredibly fun, and I think it drops some incredibly fucked up bits of lore (that will likely never be explored to their full potential 😭), but it's not essential or anything...
And lastly, thing that I don't like but that might be important:
Black Widow: Deadly Origin
I personally don't like Black Widow: Deadly Origin, by Paul Cornell, but some people consider it to be important, as it does go into more detail about the Red Room and her backstory. It's not even that I dislike *what* happens in this book, but more that I don't think it was tastefully done (it's the misogyny). I think it all could have been handled better by another writer without even changing the events themselves. The art also doesn't help tbh. I would still recommend reading it for those Red Room bits and pieces, just maybe not as a priority.
Aaand that's all I have to recommend for now! I hope this is helpful and can make you take the dive into Black Widow comics, because Natasha is a fascinating character!

@mietkoz has tagged me in something i can DEFINITELY have no issues filling out because i love tv so much ;-;
8 shows to get to know me (in no order but with explanation):
Jam (Chris Morris) - this is a weird, super dark, oddly funny sketch show from chris morris who i love, highly recommend. it also stars my beloveds kevin eldon and mark heap
Spaced - spaced is one of my favourite tv shows of all time, it really shaped my personality lmao it's so me, the references, the music, the humour. perfect. it's the best simon pegg/nick frost/edgar wright/jessica hynes vehicle
The Simpsons - i was literally raised by the simpsons and while i haven't kept up with it, i still think it's one of my favourite shows of all time. pure comfort. literally reference it multiple times a day
Peep Show - i've rewatched the entirety of peep show at least... i'm gonna say we're over 50 anyway. like i do a semi-regular rewatch of the office with my husband, but i go through bursts of watching peep show and then starting it over from the beginning once i finish it
Bob's Burgers - bob's burgers is one of my favourite shows of all time. it's better in the earlier seasons when they were properly weird and the kids were a bit gross but it's held up so far. i am gene and linda
Futurama - i will kill for futurama. it's what the simpsons wishes it was. it's what all animated comedy shows with they were. it's what scifi wants to be. absolute star spot in my heart
The Young Ones - the young ones formed a lot of my college/first year of uni time. when i wore my docs and listened to madness a lot. rik mayall and ade edmondson hold a spot in my heart forever
The League of Gentlemen - this one... hasn't aged so well. but it was one of the first fandoms i was ever active in. and it would be a bit odd of me to disclude it because i'm capable of critiquing the choices they made. but the fusion of horror and comedy are very me
honorouable mentions to: bottom, the thick of it, limmy's show, burnistoun, black books, archer, iasip and wonder showzen
i'm just going to say that anyone who wants to do this, do it and let me know because i love knowing what tv shows people enjoy! just reblog this or say i tagged you i want to SEE 💚

Note
I think it was Episode 8 when they were showing the SOP "training" that the women participated in but the moment I felt my SOUL leave my BODY was when the men were docking points from the women for various "infractions" and from one second to the next we went from "dock X for nagging me" to "dock Y for not reminding me not to bite my nails"
This whole episode so far is just like...he will say the most insanely gender essentialist, nonsensical shit and people going "No, yeah, exactly" because he's like "Now, I'm not saying it's true, I'm just giving the broad strokes of this and what the *perspective* is".
And how so much toxicity and deprivation and domination are reinforced.
Also, that bit of him for like...waaaay too fucking long (like a minute? two minutes?) just repeatedly saying "Fuck it. I want to fuck it. I want to fuck it" and Mark going "Does this have to be the porn weekend?"
Like it just got more and more uncomfortable and vile, especially when he brought up the Stanford Prison Experiment.
"If a woman calls us out on something, is that a fault on her?" "Yes -she should not be making you feel bad."
"I was humiliated with a prize ribbon - Ms. Edmondson, 'Best Display of Ass', because my jeans were too tight."
And how casually they were like "Fault #whomever for sitting in front of me" "for taking too long"...
"Can I fault 44 for doing nothing?"
"Fault all the women for forgetting to remind me to stop biting my nails. I really want to keep my cuticles intact."
Love being equated to pain and sacrifice and giving, with no expectation of return?
The whole thing was nauseating and just...very soul-sucking.

MATCH REPORT: READING (3) 5 CARLISLE UNITED (1) 1
Tuesday 28 November, 2023. 8pm. SCLS. EFL League One
No seasonal songs played as yet across a PA system that has never worked properly at the SCLS, but hear! hear! for an early Christmas present for The Royals, which they worked hard and competed for, comfortably 3-1 up by HT.
The first 5 minutes passed quickly as both teams checked each other out, then on from that, there was plenty of goalmouth action despite some misplaced passes (both sides), defensive headers (mostly Carlisle) and some crunching tackles (mostly Carlisle) - all of which went to make a very entertaining game.
Carlisle had much the better of the restart, dominating the first 5 or 10 minutes of the second period, but as more Reading goals went in, to finish 5-1 winners, understandably they lost heart and so I suspect United manager, Paul Simpson, subs were made to give others match time rather than to try and change a scoreline - by then, way beyond them.
Two of those United chances were better than half, more three-quarters if there can be such a thing, so they can count themselves unlucky not to pull at least one more goal back. They were definitely unlucky with a Reading handball, but ref, Breakspear, (who was fairly unobtrusive, unfussy and even-tempered - so controlled the game well) allowed play to continue for the hoops to score another. Of course, the Carlisle players should have played to the whistle.
Injuries, rather than time-wasting, added 7 mins to the first half, and 5 mins to the second, and at the finish, the Reading players acknowledged the crowd, echoing the minutes applause before the start of the game, in honour of Terry Venables, who recently passed.
Reading are now off the bottom of EFL 1, after two successive wins, this and at Wycombe Wanderers.
As the song goes, yes, it was a "good night".
Reading: Button, Knibbs, Smith (Ehibhatiomhan 84), Azeez, Mukairu (Elliott 74), Yiadom © (Holmes 86), Dorsett - yellow card (Mbengue 74), Bindon, Wing, Abbey, Craig (Savage 84). Unused subs: Pereira, Carson.
Carlisle United: Holy, Armer - yellow card (Butterworth 73), Moxon, Lavelle ©, Gibson (Maguire 81), Garner (Plange 10), Robinson, McGeouch (Edmondson HT), Mellish (McCalmont 81), Barclay, Emmanuel. Unused subs: Breeze, Whelan.
Goals: Reading - Lavelle (o.g. 26), Knibbs (32, 39), Wing (78), Azeez (83). Carlisle - Plange (29).
Attendance: 8,455 (556 away).
MOTM: Knibbs (Reading) - 2 goals
MOTM: Gibson (Carlisle United) - skilful trickery
ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: 9/10

Unlikely Tennis Major Winners and Finalists
Tumblr media
At the professional level, the sport of tennis consists of four major tournaments, sometimes referred to as Grand Slams: the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. While these tournaments have predominantly been won by the sport’s most accomplished competitors, a number of lesser-known, lower-ranked players have had considerable success at major events.
Tennis tournaments are single elimination events. The singles draws at major events consist of 128 players, with 32 players being seeded so that higher-ranked players do not meet until the later rounds. Despite this arrangement, a number of unseeded players have advanced to major finals.
On the men’s tour, Mark Edmondson holds the record for lowest ranked player to reach a major final. He was ranked No. 212 in the world entering the 1976 Australian Open and eliminated the No. 5, No. 12, and No. 13 seeds in succession to reach the semifinals. Edmondson achieved one of the greatest upsets in grand slam tennis history when he eliminated Australian legend Ken Rosewall, the top seed at the event and a winner of eight major championships. Edmondson won in four sets, then eliminated No. 2 seed John Newcombe to become the lowest ranked major winner of all time.
Just two years later, No. 177 John Marks received a walkover against No. 2 seed Jose Luis Clerc at the Australian Open. Marks essentially assumed Clerc’s position in the tournament, advancing to the finals with wins over seeded players such as John Alexander and Arthur Ashe, the latter in five tight sets. However, Marks fell short of another Cinderella run, losing in the final to Guillermo Vilas.
In 2001, Goran Ivanisevic enjoyed one of the most memorable Wimbledon runs in tennis history. The big server had often tangled with Pete Sampras on the lawns of the All England Club in southwest London, losing in three Wimbledon finals. He entered the 2001 event as a wildcard ranked No. 125 in the world. The Croatian eliminated a slew of young talent, including Carlos Moya and Andy Roddick, before eliminating home favorite Tim Henman in a five set semifinal. Ivanisevic capped off his campaign with a marathon five set victory over Patrick Rafter, completing the fairytale run.
Gustavo Kuerten, ranked No. 66 in the world, won Roland-Garros on his second attempt, in just his third major tournament. The grand slam victory, which included wins over Thomas Muster and Yevgeny Kafelnikov, was his first tournament win.
While impressive, few players on the men’s tour can stand up to the unlikely run of Emma Raducanu at the 2021 US Open. The 18 year old, ranked No. 150 in the world, had to play three matches in a qualifying tournament to enter the main draw, which she did without dropping a set. She went on to win the major, also without dropping a set, to become the only qualifier on either the men’s or women’s tour to win a major. Her opponent, fellow teenager Leylah Fernandez, was ranked No. 73 in the world.
The only lower ranked woman to reach a major final is Kim Clijsters, who played in the 2009 US Open as an unranked player. The Belgian initially retired from tennis in 2007, then began her professional comeback a few weeks prior to the US Open. She received a wildcard for the event, ultimately defeating Venus and Serena Williams, Li Na, Marion Bartoli, and No. 9 seed Caroline Wozniacki to win the event for the second time in her career.

Red Bull Racing Ford Announce Formula 1 Engine Partnership Starting from 2026 Season
Davide Bonaldo/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images Formula One announced Friday that Ford will return to the sport in a partnership with Red Bull Racing, beginning in 2026. According to ESPN's Laurence Edmondson, it will mark Ford's first involvement in F1 since selling its Jaguar team to Red Bull in 2004. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali released a statement on Ford's impending return, saying: "The news today that Ford is coming to Formula One from 2026 is great for the sport and we are excited to see them join the incredible automotive partners already in Formula One. They are a global brand with an incredible heritage in the racing and automotive world and they see the huge value that our platform provides with over half a billion fans around the world. "Our commitment to be Net Zero Carbon by 2030 and to introduce sustainable fuels in the F1 cars from 2026 is also an important reason for their decision to enter F1. We believe that our sport provides the opportunity and reach unlike any other and we cannot wait for the Ford logo to be racing round F1's iconic circuits from 2026." Per Edmondson, the partnership between Red Bull and Ford will largely be focused on the team's power unit since Honda decided to leave Formula 1 in 2020. Red Bull Racing will continue to use Honda engines through the 2025 season after the Japanese manufacturer decided to continue the relationship with the team. Beginning in 2026 however, it will make the switch to Ford. Ford and Red Bull Powertrains will work together at the team factory to meet the new engine regulations F1 is implementing in 2026. Ford stated in a press release that they "will provide expertise in areas including battery cell and electric motor technology as well as power unit control software and analytics" and "combustion engine development." Red Bull has established itself as the dominant team in F1 over the past two seasons, as driver Max Verstappen has won each of the past two World Driver's Championships. It also won its first Constructors Championship since 2013 in 2022. A Mercedes driver had won seven straight championships before Verstappen's back-to-back titles, but Red Bull is back atop the sport and it has an exciting new partnership lined up with one of the biggest car manufacturers in the world. via Bleacher Report - Formula 1 https://bleacherreport.com

Hey, Scumbag! You probably knew about this since it came out, but I was today years old when I found out Ade Edmonston was in The Last Jedi, my favorite of the sequel movies.
I think I missed him because he plays such a subdued First Order officer.
Hi!
