❝ [ expert third-wheeler ] ╰┈➤ of the same thread (kaiju no. 8)
— ii. apparently intruding on your dates with hoshina is one of your brother's favorite past times.
genre/warning: narumi gen x lil sis!reader, bf!hoshina soshiro, fluff a/n: wet and soggy stray sewer cat narumi up for adoption (affectionate) mini series masterlist
the first time it happened, you didn't think much of it.
it wasn't often that you and your boyfriend get to spend some time together with how tachikawa and the ariake maritime base being a good two hours away, more or less.
the only time that's possible is whenever hoshina is tasked to visit the first division due to the recent events involving the anti-no.9 conference and the making of his numbers weapon suit.
you're beyond grateful, really. even just the lingering eye contacts during formal meetings are enough to satisfy your soshiro-deprived self for some time, at least. take all you can get, you'd compromised with yourself. you couldn't be too picky in this line of work, after all.
hence, every time you were given the chance to finally sit down and properly have some quality time with hoshina, you'd planned on milking every loving second of it. in the world where only the two of you exist, you feel like nothing bad could ever happen.
"have you always had fangs, or have i just not been paying attention? wait, who am i kidding? my attention is too valuable to be paid on you, fox eyes."
okay, maybe you spoke too soon.
"didn't think we'd be having a third party today. and here i thought i agreed to a lunch date, not a family bonding time." hoshina hummed, shrugging off the earlier comment about him. swallowing a bite of rice, you let ouf a huff. "it is a date. that was just my inner demon talking."
irritated at the lack of attention, narumi clicked his tongue. "hey, stop being childish! i'm literally sitting right here!" he chided, snapping his chopsticks towards your boyfriend as you deadpanned at your brother. "speak for yourself. and you're not even supposed to be here, gen. did you run away from vice-captain hasegawa again?" you shot back, grabbing the game console your brother had brought along and smacking him with it, which earned you a pained yelp.
"ya know this can be considered as a breach of privacy, no? although this is a temporary space, you're here in my office without my permission, captain narumi." hoshina chuckled, leaning back against his seat behind the desk.
your brother snickered on the chair he had pulled up beside yours in front of the said desk. "exactly what you said, buddy. i'm a captain, so i can do whatever i want in a subordinate's office."
technically that's power abuse, you thought as you quietly eat your lunch, deciding to let the two men verbally argue back and forth about whatever it was they found unpleasing about the other.
oh well. surely this was a one time thing, right? your brother couldn't— shouldn't be bothered to disturb you and your boyfriend every single time... right?
∘₊✧─────────────✧₊∘
or so you thought.
the second time it happened was when you were on one of your most romantic nights ever; you were stargazing with your beloved soshiro. and in the night sky they were shining so bright, as if whatever deities above had painted them so vividly upon the most perfect of black canvases.
at that time you genuinely believed nothing could ever interfere with how the night was turning out.
if only you didn't agree to accompany your brother on one of his many game nights. though it might've been partially your fault that you didn't specify which night he could pick. and unfortunately for you, date night seemed to be the perfect choice for gen.
you clicked your tongue in annoyance when your phone dinged for the nth time. "don't ya want to check that?" soshiro laughed, clearly amused at how distraught you looked.
you shook your head, taking out the device before putting it on dnd. "it's just gen. he wants me to play games with him," you grunted. "right now?" your boyfriend asked, which you nodded at. he contemplated for a moment, before turning to you with a feline grin. "say you're comin' over,"
you almost choke on your saliva. "what?" you squeaked. soshiro stated the same thing, causing your eyebrows to raise even higher. "are you sure? we're on a date, soshiro. which we rarely get to do these days," you remarked.
the man sitting beside you hummed, the slants of his eyes giving him the ever so crafty image. "technically, it can still be one if i'm there too," he stated, smirking.
and that was how you found yourself in gen's room, watching your brother and boyfriend go at it on the former's bs5 as they sat on the laid out futon while you made yourself comfortable at gen's work chair, the sound of a two-player fighting game filling the room.
"dammit, dammit! yeah, take that, bowl-cut bastard! wait, shit— NOOO!!" the big red KO appeared on gen's side of the screen, causing you to sigh almost pitifully.
"wanna go again? i can try goin' easy on ya this time," soshiro quipped, making the man in question grit his teeth. "okay, why did i agree to this again?! why did you bring him here, kid?!" gen snapped his head towards you, pointing an accusing finger at your direction.
you threw him an innocent smile. "you asked for a game buddy, right? i just gave you one on a silver platter, nii-chan. i'm considering this as compensation for crashing my date with soshiro by the way," you drawled, lazily spinning around in the chair. at that point, you'd have been convinced that you grew up with a grumpy cat as a brother with how ferally ruffled he looked.
gen blanched in disgust, "eugh, hate it when you say his name in front of my face. you owe me a new figurine for this," he muttered. "you're a sore loser, aint'cha, captain?" your boyfriend piped in, not bothering to hide how entertained he was from this whole situation. gen sent him a death glare before he angrily plopped his ass back down, picking up the controller that he had hurled away during his outburst.
"alright, you're on, fox eyes!" he sneered before the two of them start another game, leaving you to once again enjoy the spectacle that was narumi gen losing rounds upon rounds of video games to soshiro (he did win some but you just couldn't ignore the significant difference between his victory and defeat scores).
guess a crashed date wasn't such a bad thing sometimes...

The controversy surrounding the use of Basque by Basque football coaches in press conferences is not limited to the Spanish state. After a journalist expressed his anger last weekend in Valladolid because Real Sociedad coach Imanol Alguacil answered in Euskera after the match between the Pucela team and Real, this Wednesday several Nice communicators did the same in the run-up to the Europa League match.
At the press conference prior to the match between Real and Nice, there was a hint of rebellion among a number of informants from Nice when, in press conference prior to the Europa League match, they were told that the first questions to the Real Sociedad coach were going to be in Basque and that there would be no translation into French of either them or the answers. The waters did not calm down even when they were told that it is tradition to do so before and after European matches - at least in the last five years with this Basque coach - and that normally the same questions are repeated in Spanish.
Despite the explanations, some local journalists threatened to ask the questions in niçard, the dialect of Occitan spoken in the French town.
Oooh, how scary! Stop the threats and go ahead and use that fucking dying dialect of Occitan, dudes! Relight it! Resucitate it! Because according to a study on the use of niçard of 2014 in the whole of the Alpes Maritimes the native speakers (or primary speakers) have disappeared and the number of neo-speakers (or secondary speakers) amounts to just 1,427 people. Which makes me think that by the luckiest of lucks several of those were journalists in that press conference, or the offended professionals couldn't even speak niçard themselves.
Chances of Imanol understanding it, though, are HIGH. It's a Romance language and judging by how it sounds, it has a high inter-intelligibility with Spanish.
Ugh these people.

thank you so much to every single one of you who was so nice to me about what we are owed, my fitzier barrister au. this alleged one-shot of an au got way out of hand in my brain, and i desperately need a break from work at the moment, so here, have all the adventures I planned for them in this verse, which, if written would comprise a complete get-together arc.
fitzier scheme together to put an end to non-stop raves thrown by their trust-fund menace of an upstairs neighbour
james ends up in the hospital saving someone from drowning in the thames and sees it fit to let francis know via an extension request his team submits to the court for their briefs
francis' oldest brother (whom francis cannot stand) is in town for a week with his family, and francis figures the way to ensure the guy stops harassing him to spend time together would be to introduce him to the world's most insufferable "boyfriend" (enter fitzjames)
a birthday is quietly marked in a cemetery (featuring revelations about james's childhood and pastel de natas)
the one with the inadvisable sex that leaves both of them feeling so cut up after
james sets his sights to getting in the good graces of neptune, a dog whose sole aim in life appears to be to despise him
fitzier visit the national maritime museum together
francis convinces james to go speak at a law conference in belfast alongside him
i am so down to talk about any of these or any corner of this au - please do hmu if interested!!
#the terror amc#fitzier#if i write all of thsi - i will end up with a 40k au rip#and this when all i wanted was to do a 2k quick one shot

Former ICE chief to be ‘border czar’
Homan expected to manage scope of deportation vows
WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump said Tom Homan, his former acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement director, will serve as “border czar” in his incoming administration, a position that is likely to play a key role in Trump’s campaign pledges to secure the U.S.-Mexico border and mount a massive deportation operation.
“I am pleased to announce that the Former ICE Director, and stalwart on Border Control, Tom Homan, will be joining the Trump Administration, in charge of our Nation’s Borders,” he wrote late Sunday on his Truth Social site.
In addition to overseeing the southern and northern borders and “maritime, and aviation security,” Trump said Homan “will be in charge of all Deportation of Illegal Aliens back to their Country of Origin,” a central part of Trump’s agenda.
He says he had “no doubt” Homan “will do a fantastic, and long awaited for, job.”
Homan is a tough-talking former Border Patrol agent who worked his way up to head Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 2017 and 2018 as the acting director.
He was never confirmed by the Senate, and his new role does not require it.
Bringing him on shows the lengths that the Trump administration is likely to go to carry out the hard-line immigration pledges that were a hallmark of the campaign.
However, Homan has also pushed back on rhetoric suggesting massive roundups.
At the National Conservatism Conference in Washington earlier this year, Homan said that while he thinks the government needed to prioritize national security threats, “no one’s off the table.
If you’re here illegally, you better be looking over your shoulder.”
He also said:
“You’ve got my word. Trump comes back in January, I’ll be in his heels coming back, and I will run the biggest deportation operation this country’s ever seen.”
He said in recent interviews, however, that those targeted — at least initially — would be people posing a risk to public safety and pushed back on suggestions that the U.S. military would be assisting in finding and deporting immigrants.
“You concentrate on the public safety threats and the national security threats first, because they’re the worst of the worst,” he said on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”
He also said that ICE would move to implement Trump’s plans in a “humane manner.”
“It’s going to be a well-targeted, planned operation conducted by the men of ICE. The men and women of ICE do this daily. They’re good at it,” he said.
During a “60 Minutes” interview before the election, Homan called suggestions of mass neighborhood raids or building camps to hold people “ridiculous.”
When asked whether there was a way to carry out deportations without separating families, he said, “Families can be deported together.”
He also said worksite immigration enforcement operations — which the Biden administration largely stopped — would be “necessary.” Gil Kerlikowske, who knows Homan from when Kerlikowske headed U.S. Customs and Border Protection under then-President Barack Obama, said Homan likely got the job because he’s been a strong, vocal supporter of Trump since leaving office and knows how the border and immigration works.
He added that unlike other figures such as Stephen Miller, an immigration hard-liner who’s also been tapped for a top White House job, Homan’s decades in immigration jobs means he knows the difficulties of launching a massive deportation operation.
“Tom is much more knowledgeable about what can be done and what’s practical,” Kerlikowske said.
Trump has long vowed the massive deportation of people living in the country illegally, but logistical and financial challenges make that difficult to carry out.
ICE has about 41,500 detention beds at any one time, and countries have to agree to take back their citizens, which is not always a given, especially for those with which the U.S. has no diplomatic relations, like Venezuela.
Obama carried out 432,000 deportations in 2013, the highest annual total since records were kept. Deportations under Trump never topped 350,000.
Homan started his career in 1984 as a Border Patrol agent before moving to ICE.
He was a relatively low-key but influential figure on immigration enforcement in the Obama administration, heading ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations arm — tasked with tracking down people who don’t have the right to be in the country and removing them.
During his first administration, Trump scrapped Obama-era policies limiting deportations to people who posed a public safety threat, convicted criminals and those who have crossed the border recently, effectively making anyone without legal status open to apprehension.
During that time, Homan spearheaded a 40% surge in deportation arrests and established policies to make immigration arrests at courthouses and detain pregnant women.
He was also a key figure responsible for immigration when the Trump administration launched its zero-tolerance policy, which separated migrant parents from their children at the U.S.-Mexico border.
After leaving the Trump administration in 2018, Homan wrote a book titled, “Defend the Border and Save Lives: Solving our Most Important Humanitarian and Security Crisis” and he has also been a frequent guest on Fox News.
What Does Trump’s ‘Border Czar’ Tom Homan Want to Do?
In 2024, as he did in 2016, Donald Trump campaigned heavily on immigration, deploying violent and graphic rhetoric about migrant crime and vowing to enact mass deportation efforts beginning on day one of his presidency.
One key figure in achieving these dark goals will be Tom Homan, the former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who Trump named on Sunday as his new “border czar.”
“I’ve known Tom for a long time, and there is nobody better at policing and controlling our Borders. Likewise, Tom Homan will be in charge of all Deportation of Illegal Aliens back to their Country of Origin,” Trump wrote on TruthSocial.
During his brief tenure leading ICE, Homan quickly became known as a hardliner on immigration who embraced the administration’s family-separation policy as a way of deterring illegal border crossings.
Homan made it clear during a speech at the Republican National Convention this summer that his stance on the issue has never wavered.
“As a guy who spent 34 years deporting illegal aliens, I got a message to the millions of illegal aliens that Joe Biden’s released in our country in violation of federal law: You better start packing now. You’re damn right. Cause you’re going home,” he said.
In a series of recent interviews, Homan laid out what mass deportations would look like under a Trump presidency.
Homan has said the government will focus on people who pose a threat to public safety and national security, but indicated that those categories could expand.
He’s also said that workplace raids and the mass arrests at job sites that ended under the Biden administration “have to happen.”
During an appearance on CBS’s 60 Minutes in October, he rejected the idea that such actions were “racist” in nature and said that talk of concentration camps holding detainees was overblown.
youtube
During Trump’s first term, thousands of immigrant children were separated from their families while the administration’s policy was enforced.
Homan was asked on 60 Minutes whether there was any way to conduct mass-deportation operations in the country without separating parents from their children.
The incoming border czar signaled that an even stricter policy could be enacted down the line.
“Of course there is. Families can be deported together,” he said.
And when asked if the American-born children of undocumented immigrants could be subject to deportation under a Trump administration, Homan did not close the door on that possibility.
“Their parent absolutely entered the country illegally, had a child knowing he was in the country illegally. So, he created that crisis,” he said.
Though allies of Trump like Stephen Miller have suggested that the administration will utilize the military and National Guard to conduct its deportation efforts, Homan has pushed back on that, saying the operation will be conducted by members of ICE.
“The men and women of ICE do this daily. They’re good at it. They all have Fourth Amendment training. They know what they can and can’t do legally,” he said on Fox News Sunday.
Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution, prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures
Vice-President-elect J.D. Vance has previously said that the administration should start with deporting 1 million people who are in the country illegally.
But a report from the American Immigration Council estimates that it could cost $88 million to remove that many people on a yearly basis.
Homan has insisted that mass deportations would ultimately save the country and taxpayers money over the years.
By selecting Homan as one of his first staffing decisions, Trump is making it clear that his immigration agenda is top of mind.
For months, Homan signaled his intention to return in a second Trump administration to finish the job that he started.
“Trump comes back in January, I’ll be on his heels coming back, and I will run the biggest deportation force this country has ever seen,” he said in July, per Semafor.
“They ain’t seen shit yet. Wait until 2025.”

Navigation Lights
It is chastening to think about how many ships were lost at sea prior to the first attempt to force captains to show lights at night. In 1836, a British Commission made recommendations that every steamer should carry lanterns visible in all directions between sunset and sunrise, but it was another two decades before anyone took the issue seriously.
Various navigation lights, 19th century (x)
By then 3064 collisions involving just British ships were recorded in one year, resulting in the loss of nine steamer and 270 sailing vessels. It was a man named Captain Evans who finally solved the problem in 1849, by devising a forward facing white masthead light for steamer within an arc two points abaft the beam on either side, along with the red and green sidelights on port and starboard sides, showing from right ahead to two points abaft the beam. Sailing vessels, however, would need only to carry a single white light until 1858, when both red and green sidelights were finally made mandatory for these vessels, too.
Two clippers - Nocturne, by Montague Dawson ca. 1940s -1960 (x)
Maritime Conference in 1889 finally saw the USA and other nations fully recognise the importance of navigational lights on ships to prevent collisions. Today, the international Maritime Organization determines the navigational lights to be carried aboard ships, and it has set detailed criteria based on the size and type of vessel. The purpose of the lights is to allow other vessels to determine both the length an the heading of travel of the ship, so that in darkness they can avoid the vessel in its entirety, and take evasive action should the lights indicate.
(x)
The standard system is red lights on the left (port side), green on the right (starboard) and white at the back (aft or stern) and front (fore/ bow).

The National Museum of Korea is the most representative and extensive museum in Republic of Korea. The museum holds an immense collection: it has more than 410,000 historically valuable and highly aesthetic relics ranging from the Paleolithic Age to the early 20th century, and more than 12,000 masterpieces of its collection are always on display in its permanent exhibition hall.
The museum also houses a Children's Museum, where visitors can learn more about the nation's history through educational programs and experiences. The outdoor grounds feature pagodas and other stone artworks too large to be on display inside. In addition to galleries with a wide array of national and international pieces, the National Museum of Korea is a stage for a number of cultural activities related to collection, preservation, research and analysis, social training, academic publications, intercultural exchange programs, concerts, and more.
The museum has six galleries: Prehistory and Ancient History, Medieval and Early Modern History, Donated works, Calligraphy and Painting, World Art, and Sculpture and Crafts Galleries.
The National Museum of Korea was established in 1945. In 2005, the museum extended and reopened on a site of 307,227㎡ (building area: 45,438㎡) in Yongsan, Seoul. Since its rebirth as a “cultural complex,” the National Museum of Korea not only to preserves and exhibits precious relics, but also provide various educational programs and cultural events.
The National Museum of Korea has a number of important cultural materials related to Silk Road (both land and maritime) from Central Asia, East Asia, and Korea. In particular, its unique collection of Sinan Undersea Relics which is a valuable source of information for study of ancient trade between China, Korea and Japan. A sunken Chinese trading ship was discovered in 1975, in the Korean southwest coast near Sinan, Jeollanam-do Province. The ship, carrying trade goods produced on orders from the Kyoto area, sank on its way to Japan from Ningbo in Zhejiang Province, China in 1323. About 30,000 maritime Silk Roads objects were excavated; they are 14th century Chinese goods, including celadon wears, coins, metal artifacts, medical artifacts, and many other types of objects.
Visitors can appreciate its vast collection; numerous national treasures of Korea are exhibited including Pensive Bodhisattva (a Korean National Treasure), Goryeo Celadon Openwork Burner, Ten-Story Pagoda from Gyeongcheonsa Temple Site, and Gold Crown from Silla.
In addition to the programs and contents respects mentioned above, the National Museum of Korea would be one of the best museums in the world, in terms of the size of the museum (biggest one in Asia and sixth in the world), the annual attendance figures (1st in Asia, 10th in the world in 2009), additional facilities (a theater, a cafeteria, a museum shop, education hall, conference rooms), and digital services for the exhibition (PDA, MP3 and kiosk system).
Opening hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Sunday : 10:00 am ~ 6:00 pm (Final entrance at 5:30 pm); Wednesday & Saturday : 10:00 am ~ 9:00 pm (Final entrance at 8:30 pm)
