Maria Hassabi’s STAGING, a world premiere being presented in the Walker Art Center galleries through Feb. 19 (seen above at a press preview), features eight dancers performing loops of movement with slowly sustained tension.

We don’t quite know what to do with these dancers when we encounter them, and that’s just the point. Is it dance? Is it sculpture? Is it an encounter with the performer or the choreographer — sometimes they’re one and the same — and what’s its relationship to the work on display?

Discovering those answers is up to us, and we have Merce Cunningham — as well as the Walker — to thank for inviting us along on the journey.

oggi sono stata alla mostra di Maria Hassabi, non avevo mai visto dal vivo una performance art. il tema era lo scorrere del tempo. un pavimento d’oro per definire il qui ed ora, una voce che ad ogni minuto scandiva il tempo che passava. al centro della sala, su una piattaforma, quattro ragazzi giovani, performers, si muovono a passo lentissimo come fossero in uno stato mediatico, quasi in trance. c’è silenzio, pace e intanto il tempo passa. sono scoppiata a piangere, come un vento improvviso sono stata travolta da un milione di emozioni contrastanti. sono rimasta a guardali per un’ora ed è come se avessi trovato me stessa almeno per un momento. mi sarei voluta avvicinare a loro, ringraziarli per aver condiviso con me le loro energie, il loro dramma, la loro anima. non ci sarebbero parole sufficienti per descrivere l’esperienza di oggi. wow.
