Reposted from @teenvogue Try as she might, 16-year-old Mari Copeny, aka @littlemissflint, is not an average teen. After gaining global recognition at just eight years old for speaking out about the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, her total social media following has grown to more than four times larger than her hometown’s population. She has met and spoken to the last three American presidents. In 2022, she appeared at the Billboard Music Awards stage to accept the Change Maker award, becoming its youngest recipient. Her knack for distilling some of today’s most pressing problems into urgent yet relatable content is just one dimension of her power. It’s a skill she is grateful for, yet tired of, as she is encountering a common paradox that youth activists face as they mature and begin to morph into more than just a mouthpiece.

You all know #LittleMissFlint , right? #MariCopeny was just 8 years old when she wrote to Barack Obama about the #FlintWaterCrisis. At the time he allocated 100 million dollars to help fix the issue, but it remains a problem to this day. Since 2014 the residents of #Flint have been without clean water. It's worth noting that Flint is a primarily black city, and that this has been one of the reasons for the slow and insufficient response to this crisis. Mari has been continually advocating for her city and keeping Flint in the public eye. Her most recent project is a water filter that will enable people in Flint to stop using plastic bottles as their primary water source.
