"The Prostitute’s Union of Massachusetts (PUMA) was an organization that was an affiliate of a prostitute’s rights organization COYOTE (Call Off Your Old Tired Ethics) which was formed by Margo St. James in 1973. Later, the parent organization for sex worker advocacy groups became the National Task Force on Prostitution. These advocacy groups focused on destigmatizing sex work, and advocating for sex workers basic human rights and decriminalization as a path to building more safety in the profession. PUMA and other advocacy groups across the country were founded off decades of sex worker advocacy and women’s rights groups. Archival material about these advocacy groups is held at a number of institutions, including Northeastern University, Duke University, and Harvard."

Oh Charles and Camilla are also extremely excessive with their homes, and Charles the environmentalist has been commuting to London from Balmoral all summer for medical appointments, I just think Charles now has the same kind of protection Liz had, where the media refrains from pointing out stuff like that about the monarch. I guess one positive thing they have is that they take their work with them so it’s not as noticeable as with for example William and Kate when they trot up to Norfolk or down to Tresco (the house you were missing) and basically have no contact at all with their staff and therefore their work. And these are rich, privileged people so they will have many homes and places to go for their holidays, and if you support a monarchy that kind of inequality comes with the territory. I just think KP handles it so bad, especially with how they’re kind of trying to play it off like they’re just like you and me in their little cottage — do you know they have no live-in staff? They were actually lucky that Harry was still the bad child at the time so they didn’t get as much criticism as they frankly should have.
And when it comes to KP they have Charles and Diana’s former apartment (8 & 9) as the office, but then they also have Apartment 1A on the other side of the palace as their home, the apartment Margo used to live in — it all had to be renovated to make it into an office space for WK, Harry, and their staff (despite there being room at St James or BP), and 1A a live able space which was a justified renovation, but would it have been as expensive? At the moment 1A is empty except for the few times a year they stay there, while 8 & 9 maintains the office — @cambridgemadness is an expert on KP’s layout and who lives where
Okay, so Tresco is house number 5 - but technically owned by the duchy rather than them, yes? So again, that's a grey area because they don't own it, but the duchy does. And Tresco Island is leased by the Dorrien-Smiths who are the caretakers. (Do I know this because I have a whole-ass book series loosely drafted on such a concept? MAYHAPS)
I think KP has always been intended to be William's home base, hence the office work. Charles wanted to move away from Buck Palace as the monarch's official residence but was ultimately nudged into it. If given the option, Wills will opt for KP or Windsor, imo. 1A is empty because they've moved for the kids' education, but honestly, I see them returning and it being their home base if/when the kids are all boarders/uni students, whatever they choose to do.

It seems crucial, therefore, to remain alert to the nuances and paradoxes of prostitution rather than to patronize prostitutes as embodiments of female sexual degradation or to glamorize them as unambiguous heroines of female revolt. Sexwork is a gendered form of work that takes its myriad meanings from the different societies in which it emerges.
Would feminists who condemn prostitutes for becoming complicit in commodity fetishism, for example, make the same criticism of black South African mine workers who drag from the earth the very stuff of commodity fetishism? Doesn't the argument that prostitutes sell themselves bear an uncanny and perilous resemblance to the sanctioned male view that a woman's identity is equivalent to her sexuality? Prostitutes do not sell themselves; rather, like all workers (including feminists), they exchange specific services for cash and carefully negotiate with their clients what services they provide, at what rate, and for how long.
The whore stigma disciplines all women. As one prostitute told me in a private conversation, "It's the stigma that hurts, not the sex. The sex is easy. Facing the world's hate is what breaks me down." The license to despise a prostitute is a license to despise any woman who takes sex, money, and mobility into her hands. If tricks are at liberty to abuse whores, chances are they will abuse other women. Empowering whores empowers all women, and educating men to respect prostitutes educates men to respect all women.
Society demonizes sexworkers because they demand more money than women should for services men expect for free. Prostitutes screw the system, dangerously interfering in the male distribution of property, power, and profit. As Margo St. James puts it, "In private the whore has power. The great fear for men, who are running things, is that if whores have a voice, suddenly good women are going to find out how much their time is worth, and how to ask for money." By organizing for decriminalization, prostitutes are organizing to put control of womens' work back in womens' hands.

Next Gen Kids and their Cats
Victoire
She finds this little scrappy kitten out on the beach one morning with Bill. It’s a little shaking thing and she just scoops her up and calls her Baby and brings her home. Fleur rolls her eyes, gives her a bath and has Luna come check her out, then just lets Victoire at it.
Baby is a Maine Coon it turns out, she goes from being this tiny little kitten to a huge cat within two years. Baby adores Victoire and follows her everywhere, to France for family visits, to the Burrow to see her grandparents, and then to Hogwarts for school. She’s a big cuddly thing and once she sits on you you’re stuck until she gets up. She loves Louis and is often found in his bed at night if Victoire isn’t around.
She moves out with Victoire when she leave Shell Cottage, but always comes out of wherever she’s hiding to see Louis.
Dominique
Her cat Lady was found similarly to Baby, out on the beach. She followed Dominique home and after a spray with the hose Fleur allowed her inside. She’s a beautiful cat, all white with silky soft hair, she’s tiny compared to Baby.
Lady is exactly that, a lady who loves to be groomed and taken care of, Dominique spends nearly an hour every night petting and brushing her before bed. When Dominique gets pregnant she refuses to leave her side, even when she’s in classes, she sleeps in a hidden pocket in her book bag.
When she leaves Shell Cottage for uni, Lady goes to live with Lorcan, but gets lots of visits from Dominique until she finally moves back in with them.
Louis
He had a cat named Beauty, she was a black, orange, and grey tortie with quite the attitude. She hated Bill and once Victoire left, Bill made Louis get rid of her. She lived at the Burrow, following around Arthur everywhere.
Once he and Anamika got married and moved to their house, they ended up with a bunch of barn cats. They don’t come in the house, but they were happy when Louis moved his art studio out to the barn. All of his kids grew up with the wild cats around, stealing a kitten here or there to take with them to Hogwarts
Molly and Lucy
They aren’t cat girls, Molly spent her childhood in St. Mungo’s and Lucy shares everything with her twin.
Molly and Artie do end up taking care of a bunch of barn cats where they live, while Lucy is the one constantly taking strays over to the magical emporium in Diagon Alley
Freddie
Not a cat person, but he likes Roxanne’s cats
Roxanne
She has Smokey and Shadow, a pair of gray cats that are absolutely beautiful and so well behaved. Shadow was first, Smokey came a few years later. They both love George even if he’s apprehensive of the pair of them.
They did live with Maria and Evan for a while when Roxanne was recovering, but they came home to her quickly. When she had her twins they both took it upon themselves to keep watch over them when Roxanne wasn’t there.
Rose
Crookshanks had thought that Rose was his kitten when she was a baby, so she has always loved and adored cats. She got Jinx when she was eleven and off to Hogwarts they went.
During her seventh year, Jinx got another cat pregnant and all the sudden she had a bunch of kittens on hand. The runt, little Charms, lived in her robe pocket most days and grew to be much bigger than his father.
Her home is always filled with cats and children and even all the strays know to come around for a good meal, and every spring and summer they end up with at least one box of kittens to take to the Magical Emporium in Diagon Alley.
Hugo
Like Rose he grew up with Crookshanks thinking he was his kitten, but once Hugo started chasing after him he kept a bit of a distance.
His first cat is named Fluff, he’s a fluffy white and orange thing that adores the wild child that Hugo is. At nine it seems a little young for him to have a cat, but Hugo proves himself a great cat parent. He later gets one of Rose’s kittens, the only girl Margo. Both Fluff and Margo love to just sit in his lap and nap on him to keep him in one place.
James
Not a cat person.
Al
He has two cats, both of them from Rose’s kittens, Dusty and Felix, the twins who end up following after him everywhere and sleep in his classroom at Hogwarts when he starts teaching.
Lily
She has one cat, a sort of birthday present from Ryan. Ellie becomes like a therapy cat for the pair of them, but especially Lily, and she loves to dance around her ankles. She adores both Lily and Ryan, and she ends up living in the studios when they open them.
Bonus: Scorpius
Flossy is a gift from Astoria, a beautiful all white Himalayan fluff ball. She’s very sweet and loves to be brushed and cuddled. Scorpius got her when he was eight or nine and they moved into the manor, giving him at least one friend in the big scary house.
Flossy is the cat that Jinx had kittens with their seventh year.

Funeral Homily for Peter Windley Herman
Good morning and welcome to St. James. A special welcome to Alice, Peter’s wife; to Caroline, his daughter and her fiance, Bruce, here with us from Florida; to Peter Jr and his girlfriend Megan, here from Chicago; to Alice’s siblings here today: Margo, Marion, Rob and Tom; nieces and nephew: Alison, Meaghan and Patrick.
There are friends of Peter’s here from Millbank, welcome to all of you. Also from George Washington High School, even grade school (PS 187).
The Rev. Tom Newcomb, the former rector of St. James is presiding with me today, welcome to him. Until recently Peter continued to have regular lunches with Father Newcomb and their men’s group--some of them are here with us today, as well.
And of course a very warm welcome to the many parishioners who came out to remember the life of this man who was well loved and respected here, and will be--IS--very missed.
Peter and Alice have been at St. James for over 30 years. They became Episcopalians as a compromise between their two traditions, Roman Catholic and Methodist. This is not uncommon. I’ll never forget, though, Peter’s reason for staying in the Episcopal Church, not exactly a ringing endorsement. These are his words exactly: “you can get used to anything.” :)
But I think he did love it here, and that’s as much for the tradition as for the people--really, more for the people. He gave a lot to this community, serving as treasurer and member of the vestry, consulting frequently on our by-laws, looking at contracts. He was a loyal member of the (old) men’s group (as he called it), a regular at coffee hours. He always saw to it that we sang the Navy Hymn on the Anniversary of Pearl Harbor. He was of course a recipient of the Wally Owen Award for outstanding service to St. James.
What I think he’d be most proud of, though, was his generosity to the children of our parish. On the back of the bulletin is a picture from about four years ago of Peter and some kids sitting near the ice cream truck he would commission each spring. It usually came on Pentecost, one of the principal (and most important) feast days in the Episcopal Church -- but never mind that, because everyone really knew this day as Ice Cream Truck Sunday.
Peter also generously had ponies brought in each year for Palm Sunday for the children to ride--this because of an old, as in centuries-old, church custom of having ponies lead the procession into the church, taken from the Gospel story of Jesus’ entry on a colt into Jerusalem. The Greater Church may call it Palm Sunday, but here at St. James it’s probably better known as Pony-ride Sunday. At least to our younger members.
We have others speaking today after me, but before I invite them up I’d like to point out that every bit of this service was chosen by Peter--every bit. Since I’ve known him, he’s talked about what was going to be in his funeral service. Media vita in morte sumus”: In life we are in the midst of death. Peter embodied an old-fashioned appreciation for mortality. The more keenly we’re attuned to it This side of the grave, the more fully we can embrace our lives. And he did.
He reminded me just days before he died--and I quote--“I want it to be known that everything in this service reflects my values.” (end quote) From the prophet Micah’s vision of a day when war shall cease so that every man can sit under his vine and under his fig tree, safe and free from harm. To the Psalmist’s joyful noise in thanksgiving for God’s mercy. To the apostle Paul’s celebration of the variety of gifts given God’s people, all of which “worketh under that one and selfsame Spirit.”
Need I mention that all these readings can only (and ever) rightly be conveyed by the Authorized King James Bible itself, the only Bible Peter took seriously?
The hymns in this service all have meaning, too--In the Garden tells the story of Mary Magdalene’s heart-rending discovery of Jesus that first Easter morning. How Great Thou Art is an homage to creation and the humility it inspires -- these come from Peter’s Methodist upbringing. Others I scarcely need to explain: classic hymns and above all the Navy Hymn with which we’ll conclude this service.
But I think the pinnacle of this service and of the Scriptures for Peter was found in the story of the Good Samaritan, our Gospel reading. A man is beaten and left for dead on the side of the road. Two men--religious leaders of this man’s own people, no less--pass by, hardly giving him a second glance. But a third man, of a different and disreputable tribe, stops to help. Not only that, but takes the wounded man on his own horse, to an inn, where he pays for him to be cared for, and brought back to health.
It contains everything Peter valued going all the way back to his student days at Columbia and the religious classes he took at nearby Union Seminary, and his days in the Navy--values he formed then and never gave up: mercy, engagement, caring for the stranger, recognizing our shared humanity, and never failing to help someone in need.
The passage ends with what Peter wanted us to hear today, above everything else--his four favorite words in the Scriptures. And for that last line I’m going to have to take some liberties with the King James version because Peter always said they were the FOUR best words in the Bible, and I just noticed in the King James it’s five. I’ll just edit slightly.
“Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?” Jesus asked.
“And [the lawyer] said, He that shewed mercy on him.
Then said Jesus unto him, Go, [and] do thou likewise.”
Today we give thanks for a great man. Whose legacy we will carry on--and carry further, just as he would have wished us to. Go, and do thou likewise. Amen.

"Maybe they would be like that, yeah. If cows had a concept of moovies." Ines says with a dry tone, a grin twitching over her lips as she glances to Mars. It remains as she nods about 'fans', even if she hates the term and her eyes bounce over Margo's frame to take in her friend's outfit of choice. "Mm, yeah. I can see why that'd be a problem for you." that's a quip she can't deliver with a straight face, bursting into laughter immediately afterwards as she nudges Mars affectionaly. "Kidding! You got the skater lesbian thing down to a T." Ines is still laughing, and only composing herself to answer Mars' question which she takes literally for a split second.
Until the clarification follows and the shifter's expression deadpans, hands flying up to try and catch the rogue avocado. "Okay well, racism has never been cool. But, I'd eat guac even if I was a whitey. Thanks very much. It's not my fault my ancestors like invented it." she returns, shooting a glance to the stall owners who seem perplexed by the end of the conversation they catch. Ines grins, passing over the avocado and then a few more that she grabs. As they bag up, Ines gets her cash ready and shoots another glance to Mars with a laugh on her lips. "Whenever I come to this place I think about those Noah St. James memes, you know the ones?" which she found funny back in L.A but now she's met him, she tries to block them from her memory.
mars recognizes the look behind the other girl's eye as her and ines walk the market. it's just a flash of familiarity that sparks in the other, but the moment passes and leaves the witch laughing alongside the shifter. the sound grows as ines talks about cows, mars quick to mirror the moving wave which only erupts more laughter from her. 'you're a fucking nerd.' she snorts, tone laden with affection as she nudges her friend. 'the cows are probably like hohmygod, wednesday just waved at me.' mars adds, leaning slightly to her friend as they walk. 'but yeah in passing is better, i guess. kinda weird when they stop you and you're like, wow today was a bad day to wear this outfit.' but mars thinks nothing of it, used to sporadic moments of attention. but she has to admit it seems more frequent ever since her work with ines. even if she knows it won't be long until the attention dies altogether. 'do you ever feel embarrassed?' she asks with a curious tone before she grins, grabbing an avocado. 'not about that, about being a fucking hispanic stereotype with how much guac you eat.' mars adds, tossing the avocado to ines as a teasing 'kitty cat reflexes' leaving her with the motion.

1963 San Francisco. The photo accompanies a post from the pastdaily blog of Gordon Skene, a veritable goldmine of ephemeral audio.
A Walking Tour Of San Francisco In 1963
San Francisco; a city that, anyone who has spent any amount of time visiting or living in comes away with an impression that is unmistakable. San Francisco has always been a city of contrasts and character. It’s also a city that has been fearful its character will eventually vanish at some point.
This 1963 description of the city, given by author and resident Herb Gold, was a verbal blueprint for what was a projected film documentary on San Francisco. A project that may or may not have come to fruition, but what leaves behind is a vivid description of a town and its inhabitants at a specific period of time.
What is fascinating, and maybe alarming, are the numbers of landmarks that no longer exist today in 2019. The character of the city, made up largely of a diverse and somewhat haywire cast of individuals and movements, breathed lifeblood into San Francisco – something it has always been known for – something not so much known for now.
The loose and Bohemian spirit of the city; those picturesque and evocative landmarks are mostly gone today. Victims of either natural disasters (the Loma Prieta Earthquake did a lot to eradicate some architectural treasures) or developers bulldozers. The neighborhoods and the ethnic communities have been carved up and displaced; scattered throughout the city or on to other cities.
But this was a concern even in 1963. Those turn-of-the-century landmarks, the ones that survived the great Earthquake of 1906, were being torn down and replaced by what were considered distortions in 1963’s eyes. Fears that the romantic aspects of San Francisco, those quirky tributes to eccentricity (The Sutro Baths, for one example), would one day vanish along with the stories and the people who walked those streets and breathed that air.
It’s a little over an hour, and it was recorded for the sole purpose of being edited and transcribed into a treatment for a film. It’s not rehearsed, nor is it written out, nor is it professionally produced – it’s a raw and unfiltered look at a city as it was during the early 1960s – years before Haight-Ashbury became a mecca for the counterculture – a period of time in transition, not only for a city but the world in general.
The names and places may be very unfamiliar to you – these were people who were the social backbone and the Bohemian heart of the city. Names like Margo St. James or Pierre de Lattre may not ring many current bells, but if you look them up, as well as the other names and places mentioned in this piece, you may unearth a story of a city you never heard about before. A very unique city that has always been just a little bit skewed, and a lot special.

Today we remember the passing of Ken Kesey who Died: November 10, 2001 in Eugene, Oregon
Kenneth Elton Kesey was an American novelist, essayist, and countercultural figure. He considered himself a link between the Beat Generation of the 1950s and the hippies of the 1960s. Kesey was born in La Junta, Colorado, and grew up in Springfield, Oregon, graduating from the University of Oregon in 1957.
In 1965, following an arrest for marijuana possession and subsequent faked suicide, Kesey was imprisoned for five months. Shortly thereafter, he returned home to the Willamette Valley and settled in Pleasant Hill, Oregon, where he maintained a secluded, family-oriented lifestyle for the rest of his life. In addition to teaching at the University of Oregon—an experience that culminated in Caverns (1989), a collaborative novel written by Kesey and his graduate workshop students under the pseudonym of "O.U. Levon"—he continued to regularly contribute fiction and reportage to such publications as Esquire, Rolling Stone, Oui, Running, and The Whole Earth Catalog; various iterations of these pieces were collected in Kesey's Garage Sale (1973) and Demon Box (1986).
Between 1974 and 1980, Kesey published six issues of Spit in the Ocean, a literary magazine that featured excerpts from an unfinished novel (Seven Prayers by Grandma Whittier, an account of Kesey's grandmother's struggle with Alzheimer's disease) and contributions from such luminaries as Margo St. James, Kate Millett, Stewart Brand, Saul-Paul Sirag, Jack Sarfatti, Paul Krassner, and William S. Burroughs. After a third novel (Sailor Song) was released to lukewarm reviews in 1992, he reunited with the Merry Pranksters and began publishing works on the Internet until ill health (including a stroke) curtailed his activities.
At the invitation of Perry Lane neighbor and Stanford psychology graduate student Vik Lovell, Kesey volunteered to take part in what turned out to be a CIA-financed study under the aegis of Project MKULTRA, a highly secret military program, at the Menlo Park Veterans' Hospital where he worked as a night aide. The project studied the effects of psychedelic drugs, particularly LSD, psilocybin, mescaline, cocaine, aMT, and DMT on people. Kesey wrote many detailed accounts of his experiences with these drugs, both during the study and in the years of private drug-use that followed.
Kesey's role as a medical guinea pig, as well as his stint working at the Veterans' Administration hospital, inspired him to write One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The success of this book, as well as the demolition of the Perry Lane cabins in August 1963, allowed him to move to a log house at 7940 La Honda Road in La Honda, California, a rustic hamlet in the Santa Cruz Mountains fifteen miles to the west of the Stanford University campus. He frequently entertained friends and many others with parties he called "Acid Tests," involving music (including the Stanford-educated Anonymous Artists of America and Kesey's favorite band, the Grateful Dead), black lights, fluorescent paint, strobe lights, LSD, and other psychedelic effects. These parties were described in some of Allen Ginsberg's poems and served as the basis for Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, an early exemplar of the nonfiction novel. Other firsthand accounts of the Acid Tests appear in Hell's Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs by Hunter S. Thompson and the 1967 Hells Angels memoir Freewheelin Frank:, Secretary of the Angels (Frank Reynolds; ghostwritten by Michael McClure).
Kesey was diagnosed with diabetes in 1992. In 1994, he toured with members of the Merry Pranksters, performing a musical play he wrote about the millennium called Twister: A Ritual Reality. Many old and new friends and family showed up to support the Pranksters on this tour, which took them from Seattle's Bumbershoot all along the West Coast, including a sold-out two-night run at The Fillmore in San Francisco to Boulder, Colorado, where they coaxed the Beat Generation poet Allen Ginsberg into performing with them.
Kesey mainly kept to his home life in Pleasant Hill, preferring to make artistic contributions on the Internet or holding ritualistic revivals in the spirit of the Acid Test. In the official Grateful Dead DVD release The Closing of Winterland (2003) documenting the monumental New Year's 1978/1979 concert at the Winterland Arena in San Francisco, Kesey is featured in a between-set interview.
On August 14, 1997, Kesey and his Pranksters attended a Phish concert in Darien Lake, New York. Kesey and the Pranksters appeared onstage with the band and performed a dance-trance-jam session involving several characters from The Wizard of Oz and Frankenstein.
In June 2001, Kesey was invited and accepted as the keynote speaker at the annual commencement of The Evergreen State College. His last major work was an essay for Rolling Stone magazine calling for peace in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.
In 1997, health problems began to weaken Kesey, starting with a stroke that year. On October 25, 2001, Kesey had surgery on his liver to remove a tumor. He did not recover from that operation and died of complications on November 10, 2001, at age 66
