7/25/24.
EDIT: I meant to queue this up for 7/29, but I mistakenly posted today. So, we got two posts today!
Margo Guryan (Boston/New York/Los Angeles) only released one LP - the excellent "Take A Picture" in 1968 - but "Words and Music" is a behemoth 3 LP set that collects most of her known work.
If you already know the broad strokes of Guryan's story, you're going to hear it again. She was a music savant - she wrote music for the likes of Dizzie Gillespie, Astrud Gilberto, Miriam Makeba and Glen Campbell.
"Take A Picture" has gone through a couple of different renaissances in the last 24 years. Numero Group's reissue of both "Take A Picture" and "Words and Music" are riding the most current wave.
"Take A Picture" truly sounds like a product of its time (the entirety of the album is here on "Words and Music" - it just appears to be spread throughout). I can't help but think of Vashti Bunyan. Guryan's music is wonderful, wispy, melodic and gentle - just like Bunyan's work.

Song Review: Steve Earle - “Yer So Bad”
Steve Earle didn’t completely erase Tom Petty’s sonic fingerprints from his cover of “Yer So Bad.” Yet, Earle’s contribution to Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty, totally sounds like a Steve Earle song.
That’s because of Earle’s growl, prominent mandolin and spiraling steel. But Petty’s still in there via the lyrics, Earle’s vocal homage on the choruses and the cover’s rock ‘n’ roll rhythm section.
Petty’s associates couldn’t have asked for a more loving interpretation. And Earle fans will embrace this new Earle track as well.
Coming June 21, Petty Country’s 20 selections include songs from Chris Stapleton; Dolly Parton; Willie and Lukas Nelson; Margo Price featuring Mike Campbell; Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives; and Rhiannon Giddens featuring Silkroad Ensemble and Benmont Tench among others.
Grade card: Steve Earle - “Yer So Bad” - A

BritBox has settled in for the holidays with several "Festive Specials" (as they're called in the U.K.) populating the calendar for the back half of the month. The specials will begin arriving on December 17, 2024, starting with the new Sister Boniface Mysteries Christmas episode. However, the season's highlight will come at Christmas and after, as Beyond Paradise and Death in Paradise debut their Christmas specials. Of the two, BritBox got first dibs with Beyond Paradise, which will stream its one-hour special edition in the U.S. on Christmas Day and then follow on the BBC on Friday, December 27. Death in Paradise will start on the BBC, arriving on Sunday, December 22, and then debuting on BritBox in the U.S. on December 27. Death in Paradise has the more significant plot development, as the series' fifth lead detective will be introduced in the special, but Beyond Paradise looks like the more interesting mystery.
However, star Kris Marshall might not remember the plot details. When asked about the 2024 special, he admitted that the show is so ahead currently that they'd just finished filming next year's holiday installment, Beyond Paradise's Festive Special for 2025. (He then realized his error, "I may have dropped a spoiler that I’m not supposed to." Welp.) However, that reveal also bodes well for a fourth-season renewal since these specials tend to be the first episode of the new season (just separated off by a few weeks).
The first images for the special are now out, and Marshall will definitely have his hands full for the holiday.
Kris Marshall as DI Humphrey and Sally Bretton as Martha Lloyd in 'Beyond Paradise'
Here's the Christmas Special synopsis:
When a widower starts seeing the ghost of his late wife, DI Humphrey Goodman and the team are called in to investigate. DS Esther Williams is deeply skeptical, but Humphrey is more than happy to dive into his first haunting. It's Christmas, after all, and who doesn’t like a festive ghost story?
The special stars Kris Marshall as DI Humphrey Goodman, Sally Bretton as Martha Lloyd, Isaac Vincent-Norgate as their new foster son, Ryan, and Barbara Flynn as Martha's mum Anne Lloyd. Despite threats to the station, it also seems very likely the core ensemble of mystery solvers will also return with Zahra Ahmadi as DS Esther Williams, Melina Sinadinou as her daughter, Zoe Williams, Felicity Montagu as Margo Martins, Dylan Llewellyn as PC Kelby Hartford and Jade Harrison as big boss CS Charlie Woods.
Guest stars for this year's one-hour episode include Amalia Vitale (Big Mood), Mark Heap (The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin), Tamla Kari (The Ipcress File), Chizzy Akudolu (Criminal Record), Austin Taylor (Doc Martin), Simon Nagra (D.I. Ray), Rosalind Adler (The Nevers), Sami Amber (Dalgliesh), and Seann Walsh (Bad Move).
Ian Jarvis penned the episode, Sandy Johnson directed it, and Lindsay Hughes produced it. Series creator Tony Jordan executive produced with Tim Key and Belinda Campbell for Red Planet Pictures, Danielle Scott-Haughton for the BBC, and Stephen Nye and Robert Schildhouse for BritBox International.

would love your country music recs!! been trying to get into the genre but haven’t really listened to a whole bunch and would love some suggestions <33
YAY thnk u for reaching out. um most of these artists i havent trawled their entire discog but each has some things i really really love. many of them explore serious topics such as addiction, discrimination (racism, homophobia, sexism, classism, etc), and more (like a lot of less commercialized and more traditional country music does).
its important to note that there is a lot of crossover in country, soul, blues, americana, and folk, so some artists might be more leaning to one of the other genres but their relation to the country style compels me to include them.
i will also say that afaik these are mostly modern artists because nothing makes me fucking angrier than people saying that new country music isnt good. please pull yourself out of the country billboard top 100 for the love of god.
ok here it is: > yola (one of my faves, lots of crossover with soul in her style) > brandi carlile, maren morris, natalie hemby, and amanda shires are all good individually and are part of a collective called the highwomen (theyve collaborated with yola several times!) > robert finley (i could cry with how much i love his work, sharecropper's son 2021 is just fucking. perfect) > john fullbright > rhiannon giddens > gillian welch > shakey graves > charley crockett (his work all feels so fresh and unique to me, i never get sick of it) > courtney marie andrews > brown bird (one half of this duo has passed on so they havent made any new music since then, but i still suggest checking them out) > mary gauthier (drag queens in limousines is a total classic) > the war and treaty > sturgill simpson > allison russell > paul cauthen (he's collabed with orville peck, who im sure a lot of people here know! if not i rec him too ofc) > emily nenni > john r miller > lucette (shes had work produced by sturgill simpson iirc) > the secret sisters (very dear to me) > katie pruitt > shovels & rope (<3) > parker millsap > margo price ( i love her i love her i love her i love her what can i say. thats how rumors get started 2020 changed my life) > kaia kater > robert ellis (less familiar w him but i like what ive heard) > jaime wyatt > arlo mckinley (another artist i havent checked out extensively but ive heard good songs from him and like his voice) > the chicks (forever and ever <333333333) > amythyst kiah > mercy bell > justin townes earle (who has unfortunately passed away in recent years, i think 2020) > waylon payne > the devil makes three > evil > jason isbell and the 400 unit
i also dont want you to think i dont want people to listen to classics, i do. i love classic country music — if you havent checked them out, id especially recommend john denver, charley pride, dolly parton, willie nelson, hank williams, johnny cash, the carter family, glen campbell, kitty wells, robert johnson (hes blues, but hes mississipean blues and has influenced country music through and through), patsy cline, judy collins, waylon jennings, and marty robbins.
this isnt comprehensive but its what comes to mind right now. i hope it was helpful!!! <3

top 5 diviners characters!
Sorry I took a while with this anon I just wanted to write out my thoughts properly since I don’t get to talk about my Diviners bbs often :). #1-2 and #4-5 are basically tied in terms of my feelings for them so I just differentiated rank based on how satisfied I was with their arcs/overall stories especially based on my reread last winter break because reading them back to back rather than as they were being published threw some of that into relief for me.
Theta Knight — I Adore this girl, have since day one and on reread especially she has my favorite arc of any of these characters, I love how her learning to accept her powers works in tandem to her de-learning the feelings of guilt she has from her abusive childhood and marriage. She also has such cool powers not just the fire but I also love that she’s the diviner who is given the title of Witch specifically in BTDBY in a way the others don’t, and how she ends up kind of claiming it. She’s also so deeply loving as a person yet at the same time unwilling to put up with bs, very stubborn frank and down to earth about the things that matter which makes her dynamics with others great to read about especially this makes her friendship with Evie Really fun because I love Evie but she does need that type of tough-love-mixed-with-support from someone. I of course love her friendship with Henry they’re very Margo-and-Eliot coded bi girl (I mean I know that’s not technically canon for Theta but I’m convinced) gay man found family friendship <3 and her relationship with Memphis is lovely very few of those love-at-first-sight-instant-connection ships work for me but they’re one of the exceptions and the way the maturity and growth of their relationship develops over the course of the books is really something.
Ling Chan — girl who is me. Excellent INTP representation for once and she’s brown and wlw too I stay winning :). Ling is such an important character to me personally I really relate to the way she thinks, her being very logical and skeptical by nature but also finding beauty in tradition and the theme of being caught between worlds in different senses. I also love her powers I find dream powers fascinating and imo this verse handles them the best in terms of explaining them and keeping them interesting  (and I say this as someone who’s favorite series is the raven cycle lol). She has such great dynamics with other chars I loved her toxic romantic friendship in the dream world with Wei-Mei and her friendship with Henry and Memphis and Theta I have mixed at best feelings about Jericho but he’s by far the most entertaining to me in his dynamic with her in the last book, and her clashing with Evie was handled pretty well and I liked her arc around internalized misogyny but I do think she got very little to do in the last book and she peaked in the middle books, which is why she’s slightly bellow Theta. She’s so special to me though.
Evie O’Neill — she’s just an excellent protagonist so three dimensional and interesting while also being very charming and fun, and the right amount of frustrating at times but you still love her. She’s ‘swell :).I also was pleasantly surprised by some of the notes on mental health and grief that got touched on in her storyline.
Memphis Campbell — the Diviners men rank pretty close for me but like with Theta the fact I was most satisfied with his arc overall solidifies his ranking. King of Crows is my least favorite of the four books (I’m a huge believer that middle book syndrome is fake and those are often the best/most interesting books in especially characters driven series and that’s true here) although I still have love for it but the full circle of his poems as the voice of tomorrow was top tier and I loved the growth in his confidence and his relationship with Isaiah.
Henry Dubois — he’s only last because he got precious little to do in books that weren’t Lair of Dreams which is where he shone, but I love him his friendships with Theta and Ling are honestly my favorite dynamics in the group And I just, have a real soft spot for the guy similar to how I feel about Eliot from the magicians.
honorable mention to Sam Lloyd who I also am v affectionate towards! Funnily enough I did not like him much my first time reading book 1 but I had a quick turn around on him and Samevie in lair of dreams (I. Love their fake dating plot in that book it’s the best ever). So yeah, he’s a good.

DEATH IN PARADISE SPIN-OFF SERIES BEYOND PARADISE IS COMING TO BBC ONE AND IPLAYER ON FRIDAY 24TH FEBRUARY 2023.
CO-COMMISSIONED BY THE BBC AND BRITBOX INTERNATIONAL, BEYOND PARADISE FOLLOWS DI HUMPHREY GOODMAN (KRIS MARSHALL) AND HIS FIANCÉE MARTHA LLOYD (SALLY BRETTON) AFTER THEIR NAIL-BITING WILL-THEY-WON’T-THEY ROMANCE REACHED ITS EMOTIONAL FINALE IN SAINT MARIE IN 2017. VIEWERS WERE DELIGHTED WHEN HUMPHREY TOOK CONTROL OF HIS DESTINY AND FOLLOWED MARTHA BACK TO LONDON TO DECLARE HIS UNDYING LOVE FOR HER.
A new adventure awaits as we find them arriving in Shipton Abbott, Martha’s hometown near the beautiful Devonshire coast, having left London. As they embark on their new life whilst temporarily living with Martha’s mum Anne Lloyd (Barbara Flynn), the couple are quickly thrown in at the deep end as Martha sets out to pursue her dream of running her own restaurant and Humphrey joins the local police force. Quickly making an impression on the somewhat eclectic team; DS Esther Williams (Zahra Ahmadi), PC Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn) and Margo Martins (Felicity Montagu), Humphrey sets out to help crack a host of baffling cases, with the Shipton Abbott squad witnessing a whole new approach to police work...
Each week the team will face a new crime with a unique puzzle at its heart. The not-so-sleepy town of Shipton Abbott will be rocked by an entire family disappearing without a trace, a woman claiming she was attacked by a suspect from the seventeenth century, the robbery of a highly prized painting, a body bizarrely discovered in a crop circle and a serial arsonist with a seeming distaste for local businesses.
As Humphrey gets stuck into his new job, he and Martha must also navigate life’s ups and downs, as faces from the past, the decisions they make and challenges of setting up life in a new town put their relationship to the ultimate test.
Created by Robert Thorogood and Tony Jordan, Beyond Paradise is a co-commission between the BBC and BritBox International and is produced by Red Planet Pictures, part of the Asacha Media Group.
Founder and Executive Chairman of Red Planet Pictures, Jordan, acts as showrunner, leading a team of writers – Amy Guyler, Ian Kershaw, Chloë Mi Lin Ewart - working across the 6x60 series. Tony Jordan, Tim Key and Belinda Campbell are executive producers for Red Planet Pictures, and Diederick Santer and Tommy Bulfin are executive producers for BritBox International and BBC respectively. The series is produced by Lindsay Hughes, directed by Sandy Johnson and Matt Carter. BBC Studios brokered the co-production deal with Britbox International and handle international distribution.
