'Tis now February...
Disney stills plans, per their latest release schedule update, to release a Walt Disney Animation Studios movie on Thanksgiving week later this year...
I also happen to know that at least one person has started animating on this movie, as of this past month or so...
So, I think... Yeah... We probably still are getting a WDAS movie in November of this year... Even though it's February, and they still haven't told us - officially - what this movie even is. Usually, we know these things in at least a year in advance. The extreme end of this is DreamWorks' hasty rollout of their RUBY GILLMAN, TEENAGE KRAKEN. Where they said *nothing* about the movie's existence until 3 1/2 months before release. The movie itself, the poster, and the trailer. All in one go. Unfortunately, it wasn't a 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE situation, the movie lost a lot of money for DreamWorks and is one of their lowest-earning movies period.
I don't think WDAS will cut it *that* close, but I suspect we should hear something pretty soon? The company as a whole doesn't have a mainline movie out until THE FIRST OMEN in April, so they have time to at least tell us what's up? They're running a little late on at least announcing that this movie *exists*. I mean, the lot of us know it does because that's how these things work, but the public doesn't. We only know that a cluster of movies that are being directed by Suzi Yoonessi, Josie Trinidad, and Marc Smith have been in the works for years. So in a way, the next one has been announced? But not really? Typically, we get some kind of confirmation on a movie that fills the slot... About a year in advance. For example, WISH was announced in September 2022, and the movie was released this past November.
Regardless of how poorly STRANGE WORLD and WISH performed, the latter critically... I was initially under the impression that WDAS was going to have one of those "what should we be doing?" episodes whenever a string of movies fail at the box office, *or* if morale is low. A new movie wasn't announced, so I figured... Yeah, they might skip this year and re-evaluate their movie slate?
After all, Mark Henn recently called it quits and remarked that he - once one of the remaining 2D animators at the studio - wasn't doing anything "meaningful" in his final years there as a full-time animator. He's sticking around, somewhat, for a short film that producer Clark Spencer is a champion of... But that's about it. So many other people have departed either during current CCO Jennifer Lee's leadership, or during John Lasseter's leadership... Couple that with the last two movies not doing great, and that's not really a good look for this 100-year-old studio. And usually studios stop and evaluate when stuff happens. Sometimes it just means making different movies, other times it's more drastic and it unfairly affects the staff... But usually, something happens.
Luckily, a ZOOTOPIA sequel and a few more FROZEN flicks are there as a safety net, and I wouldn't put it past them to announce more sequels (ENCANTO seems likelier, and MOANA as well, given how well that movie regularly does on streaming Top 10s year by year)... but originals will always be important at these studios. Even the studios that are criticized for making too many sequels (like Illumination) still need a new franchise to launch.
But... Yeah, it seems like everyone's staying the course? There have been swirling talks throughout fan circles, as per usual, with what will happen. "Does Jennifer Lee get fired?" "Do they delay the 2024 movie into 2025 and retool it?" "Is there a change in direction in what kind of movies they make?"
It doesn't seem to be? I get the sense that, whether this untitled fantasy movie is in good shape or not, it's coming. They're just gonna make it and meet the release date, apparently.
I mean, look at STRANGE WORLD. Director Don Hall pitched the film in early 2017 and development started thereafter, but in around mid-2019, he got yanked off of the movie to take over RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON. Which they finished around late 2020/early 2021, and it came out in March of that year... Meaning that once Don was done with RAYA, he had about a year and a half to return to STRANGE WORLD and get it ready for a 2022 theatrical release. Which he did. And for some observers, myself included, the movie was maybe a few drafts away from being better. The finished film feels very undercooked in its character work and worldbuilding, but that's just me speculating.
After all, remember how Pixar turned TOY STORY 2 completely around with less than a year to go? Turned out fantastic, despite the stress and the rushing. FROZEN was literally rewritten top to bottom within its release year! And people loved that movie, it made a billion and became a worldwide phenomenon! Sometimes the end product miraculously works on audiences, sometimes it doesn't. Maybe it doesn't matter, because to some 6-year-old out there, STRANGE WORLD rocked their world. It probably would've been one of my favorite movies at age 8, that's for sure. And it'll be a favorite of theirs once they're in college or something, it'll be a case of "This SLAPPED! Why did it flop 20 years ago???"
So, it looks like the movie is happening. I have heard from the trenches that the 2024 slot went to a fantasy tale set in the Middle East, presumably from director Suzi Yoonessi, who is of Iranian descent. Jennifer Lee stated in late 2019 that Yoonessi was directing a feature film for the studio, so if this is hers... They had five years to get this story together. Good sign, right? Should make that release date just fine, then!
The execution of it is what matters in the end, and looking at WISH's poor scores and blah legs domestically, it appears that this is WDAS' problem. WISH took about five years to come together, so there was plenty of time. What went wrong? This currently-untitled 2024 movie could've had all the time in the world to come together as a strong piece of storytelling and appeal to audiences, *but* if you execute it in a way that turns moviegoers away? You've got a problem. And when I read from some of the filmmakers/staffers that the studio brass regularly test screens early versions of these movies for toddlers, and then they cut lots of potentially good stuff that could've really worked because little Jimmy got scared? Couple that with so many talents leaving the place over the last few years? I kinda think that's the problem.
While FROZEN II, which suffered a lot of cuts and dumbing down because of test screenings, went and made over $1.4b worldwide... WISH lost a lot of money, yet it's still looking to become the studio's highest-earning movie since FROZEN II. Some four years ago... Possibly set to outgross the much-more beloved ENCANTO (which probably also suffered from needless focus group nonsense), a Delta/Omicron-era release which currently sits at $256m worldwide.
The studio is undoubtedly in a weird spot right now from my outsider perspective, and they appear to be meeting this one-a-year quota still. Curiously, some of Pixar's staff is to be laid off this year, staff that were involved with Disney+ projects like DUG DAYS and WIN OR LOSE. Disney Animation recently opened a Vancouver unit meant for Disney+ shows, like the upcoming MOANA series. IWAJU, which is a month away, was outsourced to Canadian house Cinesite. "WDAS Vancouver" still operating for now, despite the company reducing their focus on making stuff for Disney+. It would suck to see them close down just a few years after being set up, much like what happened to Pixar Canada over a decade ago.
So yeah... We'll learn soon, I believe, what's going on here. Speculation is always rampant when it comes to animation, and just the movies in general. You know, I came across a website that hasn't been updated since the mid-2000s. A site run by some dedicated animation fan, who collected pretty much all the major news articles on movies that were new at the time of the blog's operation: Stuff from FINDING NEMO to MADAGASCAR to BROTHER BEAR to ROBOTS... I spent quite some time reading through all of it, as I was becoming internet-aware at the time. And by looking at what was cited and sourced, this is all nothing new. There was so much speculation with all of those now-classic movies, and a lot of it was UTTER BULLSHIT. Like how FINDING NEMO was really gearing up to be Pixar's first flop, and it ended up being - for a period - the highest-grossing animated movie ever and an Oscar winner.
And I'm sure whatever is being cooked up about Untitled WDAS 2024 and many other productions today is also UTTER BULLSHIT. Hearing from the trenches is one thing, but there's lots of made up stuff, and there's probably some of it floating around now.
Anyways, all I know is, WDAS does this focus group thing with their movies, and people are leaving... But other than that, it appears that the new movie is still coming out this year. But things always change, so we shall see...

Regarding Ariel being off-model I always remember that anecdote of James Baxter who animated her during the buildup to the destruction of the grotto and how he apologized to Glen for not drawing her "on-model", but I always believed she looked ok in that scene? I do agree with you that Ariel is seen off-model in plenty of scenes, maybe the fact she had two supervising animators (Glen and Mark) is the reason? Both men have different styles and you see the animation behind the scenes you can see Glen draws her differently to how Mark draws her.
Oooh, it depends on what shot James Baxter was talking about- because I did think Mark Henn did it, but now that I'm trying to remember I do think James did the bit I didn't like, where she's twirling around Eric and answering his imaginary request for her to run away with him. I just feel like she doesn't look like herself in that part of it and the construction of the face/shape of the hair is off, and I think James did it? Which is surprising because he did so well with Meg later on, and the work he did on BATB was great, even though Belle is definitely off model even more than Ariel is. I don't know how much Ariel having two supervising animators had to do with it, honestly, because Cinderella did too and she, I think, is the most on-model of all the princesses in her film. But I also know that they hired someone to ensure Marc and Eric's animation was on-model, so maybe that middle man was omitted for budgetary restrictions on The Little Mermaid and they only had the cleanup artists?
#- message in a bottle <#ask#anonymous#that's also the cel jodi owns and i thought it was so random#like why that out of everything

Wrap Up March 2022
Did read a lot of picture books this month (blame my internship)
Extra Yarn - Mac Barnett & Jon Klassen: I noticed the drawing style of Jon Klassen while I read ‘Pax’ (a story about a boy and his fox) so I picked this picture book :) colorful story about a girl with a lot of yarn...
With The Fire On High - Elizabeth Acevedo A book with a lot of food in it can always win over my foodie side :P Emoni just really won my heart!
Max And The Superheroes - Rocio Bonilla Saw this book at my work (kindergarten) and I really loved the graphics... they resemble a comic book style :) A really nice picture book about a boy and his favourite superhero.
De Walvisbibliotheek (The Whale Library) - Zidrou & Judith Vanistendael It was the title that drew me to this graphic novel, and it were the aquarel drawings by Judith that really did it for me!
Verder dan Ver - Joris Thys Rereading this book after I finally bought it. The drawings are still so beautiful!
De NEEhoorn (Das NEINhorn / The Unicorn That Said No) - Marc Uwe Kling & Astrid Henn Very funny picture book about an unicorn that always says NO. I was very tempted to buy this for my newborn niece, but then I bought it for myself :D I just love the drawings and all the details so much!
Holy Cow - David Duchovny I stumbled upon this small book (around 200 pages) at my local library... The funny point of view of Elsie (the cow) and the drawings by Natalya Balnova really made this a funny and light read.

What are some unpopular animation opinions you have
Off the top of my head:
We should go back to cel animation. I keep seeing the push for hand drawn to return and I totally agree, but I still think the hand drawn animation I saw in the 2000s was incredibly flat and didn't offer a depth of color that the original cel animated features did. Also, there's just a different energy and it's so much more human when it's made by a human hand!
Disney 3D animated features feature incredible art when it comes to the landscaping but its human animation is disturbing. I think the Shrek movies and even the Barbie movies of the early 2000s all have better human animation than seen in films like Tangled, Frozen, or Moana.
The Disney Renaissance was an INCREDIBLE time for animation, and one of my favorites, but it's far from the best era. I think this period indicated a shift in making the writing and storylines much, much more masculine with a heavy focus on male characters and women who appeal to patriarchal values. I think the Renaissance was an incredible age of exploration, but we should've continued progressing, we shouldn't still be looking back at it as the peak of animation.
I think Snow White and Cinderella have much more appealing and realistic designs than any of the characters from the 90s onward. Also, not sure if this is an animation opinion, but I know this is super unpopular- I think Snow White has one of the best voices in all of Disney and Rapunzel has the worst by far.
I love Glen Keane and he's one of the ultimate animators in my book! His work on Ariel, Aladdin, and Prince Adam are unparalleled. However, I think his design work on films like Tarzan and Tangled seem a little tired and aren't as unique.
Andreas Deja is as iconic as Marc Davis was, in a different way of course, but he never gets the recognition he deserves- especially when compared to a Mark Henn.
I think Disney stopped being Disney years ago and all the modern movies of the 3D age are essentially just spoofs of Dreamworks. I wish they would allow Dreamworks to be Dreamworks and Disney would go back to honoring its roots as opposed to trying to be something they aren't and going against the integrity of the company.
The animated movies today (Turning Red, Frozen, Tangled, Moana namely) are incredibly infantilized and don't honor Walt's wish of making films for adults/films that can go up against other contemporary films of the time, and not just make films for twelve year olds.
Also, I know many prefer hand drawn animation so this isn't unpopular BUT this quote by Marc Davis makes me so sad considering the state of these movies today: "Animation is an anachronism. It is that rarity- a handmade product in a mechanized age."

Marc-Uwe Kling / Astrid Henn – Das NEINhorn

I’m reading an article about the Disney Princess Toddler line, and evidently, Glen Keane was the one who designed Aurora’s baby doll! One of the influences was some of the original merchandise from the toy company Gong Bell, which manufactured a toy doll cradle made from particle board and paper appliques, which featured artwork of an adorable, wide-eyed child version of Aurora surrounded by forest animals, as did a Gong Bell puzzle.
That young Aurora, who was originally meant to appear in the film, also showed up in a comic book series published by Gold Key. But the kicker? Glen agreed to design her, instead of Cinderella (who Mark Henn took over due to his friendship with Eric Larson), because of his connection with Aurora’s designer and animator.
"But given that I knew Marc Davis- the Disney Legend that had originally created Princess Aurora- and I knew the way that he drew...well, I thought that I could handle translating that character into a toddler. Take the stylization of her hair that Marc had come up with for this character and then make that work for a doll.”
#* / VISIONS ARE SELDOM ALL THEY SEEM#i have so many thoughts#first off i always loved the 50s toddler aurora art and had no idea it came from a part of the movie that was cut???#mary costa could've voiced baby aurora too trust me she has the chops#but like#also#the fact that glen only said yes because he knew marc and the way marc drew#reminds you of how valuable the individual talent of handdrawn animation is#and like the fact that marc's gone and glen is only getting older is depressing#we're getting further and further away from any authentic tie to aurora#ugh

✨🧚🏼♀️ These past weeks, I have been doing multiple drawings of Disney characters in anticipation for the Walt Disney Company’s 100th birthday. I based this new drawing of Tinker Bell on a scene from the trailer for the upcoming short film “Once Upon A Studio”. Still, when sketching or drawing Tinker Bell, I refer back to drawings by her original lead animator, Marc Davis. ✨

As a non-native Thuja in your native land
Victoria Browne Galleri Briskeby
Opening: Thursday 23 September 2021, 17.00 - 19.00 Dates: 23 September - 16 October 2021
https://www.galleribriskeby.no/kontakt-oss/
This exhibition depicts Thuja, a non-native evergreen, and a hybrid cross, planted extensively throughout new housing developments in Oslo. The vernacular foliage emblematises the urban sprawl of North America, Northern Europe, and East Asia over the past century.
An immersive backdrop invites the audience to take centre stage. The colour palette is inspired by an eerie green that is omnipresent in many of Edvard Munch’s paintings and reminiscent of winters in Oslo when the early morning sunlight reflects off the white wooden villas.
Victoria Browne is credited for her polychromatic, gesturally carved relief prints. Her artistic practice incorporates block printing inspired by post-industrial craft heritage and is situated in the intersection of digital technology, machine tools and tacit knowledge.
Iterations of her KUF funded artistic research has recently been exhibited as an artist’s book in Berlin, a wallcovering in Krakow, a billboard in Antwerp and a video in Hong Kong.
Victoria Browne lives and works in Oslo. She is influenced by artists such as William Morris, Edvard Munch, Bridget Riley, Marc Camille Chaimowicz and Michael Armitage. Her prints and publications are held in international collections including Bergen City Council, V&A, Tate and MoMA.

Exakt på vilket sätt återstår att se, men galans producenter har sagt att »the plan is to stage an intimate, in-person event at Union Station in Los Angeles, with additional show elements live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.«
Best Picture
“The Father” (David Parfitt, Jean-Louis Livi and Philippe Carcassonne, producers)
“Judas and the Black Messiah” (Shaka King, Charles D. King and Ryan Coogler, producers)
“Mank” (Ceán Chaffin, Eric Roth and Douglas Urbanski, producers)
“Minari” (Christina Oh, producer)
“Nomadland” (Frances McDormand, Peter Spears, Mollye Asher, Dan Janvey and Chloé Zhao, producers)
“Promising Young Woman” (Ben Browning, Ashley Fox, Emerald Fennell and Josey McNamara, producers)
“Sound of Metal” (Bert Hamelinck and Sacha Ben Harroche, producers)
“The Trial of the Chicago 7” (Marc Platt and Stuart Besser, producers)
Best Director
Thomas Vinterberg (“Another Round”)
David Fincher (“Mank”)
Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari”)
Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”)
Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”)
Best Actor in a Leading Role
Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”)
Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”)
Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”)
Gary Oldman (“Mank”)
Steven Yeun (“Minari”)
Best Actress in a Leading Role
Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”)
Andra Day (“The United States v. Billie Holiday”)
Vanessa Kirby (“Pieces of a Woman”)
Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”)
Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”)
Best Actor in a Supporting Role
Sacha Baron Cohen (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”)
Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”)
Leslie Odom Jr. (“One Night in Miami”)
Paul Raci (“Sound of Metal”)
Lakeith Stanfield (“Judas and the Black Messiah”)
Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Maria Bakalova (‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”)
Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”)
Olivia Colman (“The Father”)
Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”)
Yuh-jung Youn (“Minari”)
Best Animated Feature Film
“Onward” (Pixar)
“Over the Moon” (Netflix)
“A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon” (Netflix)
“Soul” (Pixar)
“Wolfwalkers” (Apple TV Plus/GKIDS)
Best Adapted Screenplay
“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.” Screenplay by Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony Hines, Dan Swimer, Peter Baynham, Erica Rivinoja, Dan Mazer, Jena Friedman, Lee Kern; Story by Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony Hines, Dan Swimer, Nina Pedrad
“The Father,” Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller
“Nomadland,” Chloé Zhao
“One Night in Miami,” Kemp Powers
“The White Tiger,” Ramin Bahrani
Best Original Screenplay
“Judas and the Black Messiah.” Screenplay by Will Berson, Shaka King; Story by Will Berson, Shaka King, Kenny Lucas, Keith Lucas
“Minari,” Lee Isaac Chung
“Promising Young Woman,” Emerald Fennell
“Sound of Metal.” Screenplay by Darius Marder, Abraham Marder; Story by Darius Marder, Derek Cianfrance
“The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Aaron Sorkin
En duell mellan »Promising Young Woman« och »The Trail of the Chicago 7«.
Best Original Song
“Fight for You,” (“Judas and the Black Messiah”). Music by H.E.R. and Dernst Emile II; Lyric by H.E.R. and Tiara Thomas
“Hear My Voice,” (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”). Music by Daniel Pemberton; Lyric by Daniel Pemberton and Celeste Waite
“Húsavík,” (“Eurovision Song Contest”). Music and Lyric by Savan Kotecha, Fat Max Gsus and Rickard Göransson
“Io Si (Seen),” (“The Life Ahead”). Music by Diane Warren; Lyric by Diane Warren and Laura Pausini
“Speak Now,” (“One Night in Miami”). Music and Lyric by Leslie Odom, Jr. and Sam Ashworth
Best Original Score
“Da 5 Bloods,” Terence Blanchard
“Mank,” Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross
“Minari,” Emile Mosseri
“News of the World,” James Newton Howard
“Soul,” Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Jon Batiste
Best Sound
“Greyhound,” Warren Shaw, Michael Minkler, Beau Borders and David Wyman
“Mank,” Ren Klyce, Jeremy Molod, David Parker, Nathan Nance and Drew Kunin
“News of the World,” Oliver Tarney, Mike Prestwood Smith, William Miller and John Pritchett
“Soul,” Ren Klyce, Coya Elliott and David Parker
“Sound of Metal,” Nicolas Becker, Jaime Baksht, Michelle Couttolenc, Carlos Cortés and Phillip Bladh
Titeln skvallrar om var krutet har lagts. Allt annat än vinst vore ett misslyckande.
Best Costume Design
“Emma,” Alexandra Byrne
“Mank,” Trish Summerville
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” Ann Roth
“Mulan,” Bina Daigeler
“Pinocchio,” Massimo Cantini Parrini
Best Animated Short Film

“Genius Loci” (Kazak Productions)
“If Anything Happens I Love You” (Netflix)
“Opera” (Beasts and Natives Alike)
“Yes-People” (CAOZ hf. Hólamói)
Best Live-Action Short Film
“Feeling Through”
“The Letter Room”
“The Present”
“Two Distant Strangers”
“White Eye”
Best Cinematography
“Judas and the Black Messiah,” Sean Bobbitt
“Mank,” Erik Messerschmidt
“News of the World,” Dariusz Wolski
“Nomadland,” Joshua James Richards
“The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Phedon Papamichael
Best Documentary Feature
“Collective,” Alexander Nanau and Bianca Oana
“Crip Camp,” Nicole Newnham, Jim LeBrecht and Sara Bolder
“The Mole Agent,” Maite Alberdi and Marcela Santibáñez
“My Octopus Teacher,” Pippa Ehrlich, James Reed and Craig Foster
“Time,” Garrett Bradley, Lauren Domino and Kellen Quinn
Best Documentary Short Subject
“Colette,” Anthony Giacchino and Alice Doyard
“A Concerto Is a Conversation,” Ben Proudfoot and Kris Bowers
“Do Not Split,” Anders Hammer and Charlotte Cook
“Hunger Ward,” Skye Fitzgerald and Michael Scheuerman
“A Love Song for Latasha,” Sophia Nahli Allison and Janice Duncan
Best Film Editing
“The Father,” Yorgos Lamprinos
“Nomadland,” Chloé Zhao
“Promising Young Woman,” Frédéric Thoraval
“Sound of Metal,” Mikkel E.G. Nielsen
“The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Alan Baumgarten
The Trial of the Chicago 7«.
Best International Feature Film
“Another Round” (Denmark)
“Better Days” (Hong Kong)
“Collective” (Romania)
“The Man Who Sold His Skin” (Tunisia)
“Quo Vadis, Aida?”(Bosnia and Herzegovina)
Best Makeup and Hairstyling
