Enrico Pieranunzi, Marc Johnson
Trasnoche
EGEA, 2003
Enrico Pieranunzi, piano
Marc Johnson, bass

This is a traditional Catalan song called La ploma de perdiu (“The partridge feather”) that originated in the Middle Ages.
The song has been covered by different modern singers who played it in different traditional styles, like Maria del Mar Bonet and Al Tall, Marc and Quirze Egea, and Tornaveus.
Can you guess where the lyrics are going?
Lyrics in Catalan and translation to English:
Si n'hi havien tres ninetes, lumberbigudí bigudon dondeta, lumberbigudí bigudeta don, que totes tres brodaven seda, lumberbigudí, lumberbigudon, lumberbigudí bigudeta don.
There were three young girls lalala lalala lalala la la and the three of them embroidered silk lalala lalala lalala la la.
L'una era groga i l'altra verda, i l'altra n'era vermelleta.
One [was embroidering] a yellow one, and the other a green one and the other one’s was red.
The King’s son was talking a walk there and asked them a thread of silk
“What do you want the thread of silk for?” “I want it to make a little tie”
— Per què en voleu la llaçadeta? — Per a agafar una perdiueta.
“What do you want the little tie for?” “So I can catch a partdridge”
— Per què en voleu la perdiueta? — Pera arrancar-li una plometa.
“What do you want the pardridge for?” “So I can pluck a feather”
— Què en voleu fer de la plometa? — Hi vull escriure una carteta.
“What do you want to do with the feather?” “I want to write a little letter with it”
— Què en voleu fer de la carteta? — Vull enviar-la a l'amoreta.
“What do you want to do with the little letter?” “I want to send it to my dear love”
— Què en voleu fer de l'amoreta? — Vull fer-li una abraçadeta.
“What do you want the dear love for?” “I want to hug her”

Make Like a Tree is a quintessention of travels expressed in music and photography created by Sergey Onischenko - vagabond from Ukraine who is touring a round the world and spreading his indie-folk tunes with a touch of non-conformism and Beat Generation ideas and exhibiting his minimalistic landscape photography taken in omnifarious places during his journeys.
Each concert is played with new members and all songs are created and recorded in different parts of the world. Experiments with sounds and collaborations with audience can turn one-man-band in a duo or in quite a large improvising ensemble.
“Mothernight” is a third album created by Make Like a Tree. It's a 10 track indie-ambient folk album that is a quintessention of 3 year world journey around the world. Every song is a collaboration with a new artist who Sergey has met and involved into Make Like a Tree project during his wanderings around Japan, Kenya, Tanzania, Russia, Ukraine, Austria, Italy, Norway, Catalonia, Armenia. The name of the album is inspired by the eponymous novel of Kurt Vonnegut that describes a perfect example of “citizen of nowhere”. The name refers to the idea that modern society is lost in the middle of the night without any directions to the place where we came from. Night scrapps all the shells and ripping off masks that accrue to our faces makes us look more real . "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be."
Album has been self recorded in a portable home studios in Japan on the suburbs of Tokyo and on beautiful island of Zanzibar polished by the ocean breeze and heavy sunlight of Tanzania. Mastering is done by Thomas Meidell in Metropolis Studios in Oslo, Norway. Cover is done by the japaneese painter Youji Otsuki.
This album unites many nations and makes the borders vanish facing the power of music.

History of collaborations
1. Under Water
Make Like a Tree & Owl Clarinet - clarinet, sax, akai ewi (Ukraine)
https://www.facebook.com/owl.clarinet/
“Under Water” is a first track that opens the album. It was composed and recorded on island of Zanzibar and then featured Sergey Savenko aka Owl Clarinet - clarinet and synth music genius from Ukraine. He added beautiful melodies of clarinet, sax and akai ewi. I met Sergey long time ago seeing him performing with other bands in clubs of my hometown Kharkiv where we all used to grow up. Some solos that he played from stage got carved in my memory and when coming back home from his shows these melodies were always on repeat in my mind. We played many shows together and it was always a dream to make a record with his tunes. Finally when i came back from my long journey home we could make our collaboration happen. This songs represents the feeling of being united with someone without having any reasons. Being “under water” with other person means finding out that you have something in common that makes you feel a strong connection even without knowing each other well. It happens a lot when you travel and you meet new people and after couple of hours spent together you feel like you have known each other for ages. Being “under water” means being friends.
2. Sad Baobab Song
Make Like a Tree & Mt. Mélodie - Ebow, Moog (Norway)
https://www.facebook.com/mtmelodie/
Long time ago i was listening tons of new music every day trying to follow all brand new released albums. Now I'm more into listening on repeat bands that I’m already in love with. Back then I found a great band “The Samuel Jackson 5” from Norway. They are still in my playlist since i have heard them more than 10 years ago. Once they came to Ukraine and I was in a front raw watching them. They were not only genius and talented musicians but also a very humble and cool guys with who we were hanging out after the show and I even managed to make an interview with them. After bunch of years I visited Oslo and I met with Thomas Meidell - guitar player of “The Samuel Jackson 5” in his studio for an impro collaboration that ended up in a small experimental 3 tracks EP. I really enjoyed playing with him and seeing the way he works in a studio. I proposed him to make a song for my future EP and also do a mastering of the entire album. I recorded Sad Baobab Song in sunny Kenya and then sent it to Thomass into snowy Norway. Literally from summer to winter. I feel that it added some nice contrast and shape to the whole idea of the song. After one of the shows someone asked me: Why is your baobab sad?”. And my reply was: “The baobab from the song is sad because he has never seen snow and he realized that he does not have a chance to see it for his entire life.”
3. City is a cage
Make Like a Tree & Nick Acorne - Synth (Ukraine, Austria)
http://nickacorne.com/
In spite of being recorded on a sunny Zanzibar island this song had a dark mood. The name of the song speaks for itself. It happens sometimes to me that if I stay too long in a concrete jungles for too long time I start feeling that I miss a fresh air. Running away to the woods always helps to recharge inner batteries and then continue struggle with a city monster. I know Nick for ages as we have been part of the same underground music scene of Kharkiv. We played many shows sharing same stage. Now he lives in Graz, Austria and sometimes comes to play a show with me if I’m touring somewhere nearby. He added this perfect melancholy mood to the song and from being light grey in became much more contrast with his sounds.
4. Back to myself
Make Like a Tree & Marc Egea - Hurdy Gurdy (Spain, Catalonia)
http://www.marcegea.com/
I met Marc Egea during our amazing tour for 1 month from Moscow to Tuva Republic as a part of MuzEnergo Tour. It was a crazy adventure as we shared space of 1 bus with 10 other bands from all over the world and we were literally living in that bus during the tour as getting from city to city in Russia is not as easy and fast. Marc plays amazing instrument Hurdy Gurdy and he is a real genius! We played couple of shows together and making a record together was my dream for many years already. I recorded this song In Zanzibar and sent it to Marc in Catalonia where he put layers of his beautiful instrument. This song is about idea that you can search for yourself everywhere in the world - look under every stone, go deep underwater, climb the highest mountain but in the end you will realize that you were always very close but never looked in a right direction as the only place where you can find yourself is inside.
5. In the middle
Make Like a Tree & Takahiro Kido - Piano, Synth & Yuki Murata - Piano (Japan)
http://fleursy.com/yukimurata/
http://fleursy.com/takahirokido/
While touring Japan in 2017 I was very happy to meet amazing musicians Takahiro Kido and Yuki Murata. I knew their music since a long time ago and meeting them in person was a great gift for me. We had a nice walk around Kichijoji area in Tokyo and enjoyed first spring days. Takahiro Kido added some beautiful Piano and Synth tunes and Yuki Murata played amazing piano solos. The track “In the middle” represents a description of human’s life as a book where every day is a new page that we can fill with beautiful moments. But some of us are forgetting about possibility to turn the pages and they got stuck in the middle of the book with rewriting every day on the same page that leads to unhappiness. This song is a reminder to myself about importance of not carrying many things that we don't need anymore from past days and being strong enough to turn the pages and enjoy freshness of life form a new page.
6. To the sea
Make Like a Tree & Owen Ross - Synth, Effects (USA)
www.owenrossmusic.com
If to believe scientists - sea is a place where we all are coming from. And there is always something special in a journey home. I always have this special happy buzz inside of me when I know I'm going to the direction of the big water. And after a long journey when you step on the beach and the first sip of fresh air comes to my lungs - that's something hard to describe with words. I love that feeling. So i decided to make a try and express this touch of the sea in a song. We met with Owen Ross in one of the clubs of Berlin playing show together. When i heard his music I was totally amazed by his sounds and an idea of collaboration was born straight away. Owen added life to this song with his beats and synth and something that i really like in his own music. Let’s call it a fresh breeze of the ocean.
7. I'm so happy here without you
Make Like a Tree & Akie Doi - Violin (Japan)
http://www.jiri-official.com/
My life in Tokyo definitely would not be so fun and great without knowing Akie. She is a multi talented musician and yoga teacher and for me she became a great companion to explore suburbs and secret places of Tokyo. We performed together couple of times and felt a strong music connection like an electricity shock between two people. We decided to make this record together to memorize this feeling. Special thanks to Paradise Air Art Residency that gave me a roof above my head where i could work on my new songs. The provided living space used to be a Love Hotel in past. It inspired me a lot and i decided to make a happy song about sad person who is looking for love happiness in other people and in the end character of my song realizes that the source of real happiness and love could be found only inside of us but not outside.
8. Polar Explorer
Make Like a Tree & Danya Alshevsky - Piano (Russia)
http://hyggelig.bandcamp.com/
I wrote this song in a beautiful beach of Bali and then never had a chance to record it. Finally after playing it in many shows i made the final recording of it in Zanzibar in my home portable studio. This song is about a traveller who had a dream to see the center of the South Pole. He goes on a solo risky journey with dozen of dogs and in his pocket he has a photo of the girl who he is in love with. When the weather is extremely bad and everything goes wrong he takes out the picture and while he looks at the picture it makes him feel better and motivates him to move on. The trip goes really tough for him and due to the lack of food he starts eating his dogs one by one. He does not want to stop his journey and by the time he finally reaches the center of the South Pole he is alone because he had to eat all his dogs. He does not have enough food to survive on the way back but he is not giving up and trying to get to the civilization totally exhausted and starving. The only thing that keeps him alive is a picture of the girl that he is constantly looking at and it gives him power. When he is almost about to die from exhaustion he eats the picture of the girl and with a final effort he manages to reach the shelter and survive. Danya Alshevsky who helped me to make this song more moody and deep is a frontman of a russian band Hyggelig. We met in december 2012 exactly at the day when everyone was announcing that it's gonna be the end of the world. It was in his snowy town Nizhny Novgorod and we played a show together and who knows maybe we were the ones who saved the world with music. I'm a big fan of Hyggelig band and making a collaboration with Danya was a big pleasure for me.
9. Beautiful day
Make Like a Tree & Gabriele Blandini - Trumpet (Italy)
https://www.facebook.com/gabrieleblandiniofficialpage/
Song was recorded in Nairobi capital of Kenya. It was just my voice and guitar but i had a feeling that something is missing in it. After some time i realized that i want to have a trumpet in this song. I was looking for someone who could make a perfect solo. After Africa I came to Puglia - south region of Italy - place where people really know how feel happiness of life in every day. And a kind of a miracle happened. We met with Gabriele Blandini coincidentally on beautiful streets of city Galatina and after we had a chat with him my friend told me that it's a trumpet player of Manu Chao. It happened to be that i heard Gabriele’s solos far before meeting him in person while listening to music of Manu Chao. Some time later we met in a PART studio and Gabriele added beautiful trumpet solos to my song. It was a perfect match. It was exactly what i wanted to hear in the song. Seems like Gabriele took the music that i had in my head and put it out of his trumpet.
10. Hope
Make Like a Tree & Sleepless - Synth (Armenia)
https://www.facebook.com/Sleeplessmusic1/
I was playing concert in Yerevan in summer 2017 and Arman Less aka Sleepless invited me to his home studio to make a record together. It was a great time as we have done a great job and also i met all his lovely family and get to know his music better. We used one of the beautiful fresh tracks by Sleepless and I added some vocals to the song. It’s a last song on the album but was actually the first one that was recorded and got to the album compilation. It's about eternal life of hope that never dies.

MiTeatro Temporada #27
Venganza Sutil
Me daba miedo verdaderamente.

Marco Zurzolo Band
7 e Mezzo
Egea, 2005
Marco Zurzolo (sax alto); Gabriella Grossi (sax baritono); Alessandro Tedesco (trombone); Gabriele Mirabassi (clarinetto); Carlo Fimiani (chitarre); Erasmo Petringa (violoncello); Claudio La Gatta (violoncello e oud) nei tit. VIII-X; Giuseppe Timbro (contrabbasso); Marc Johnson (contrabbasso) nei tit. I-IV-VII-VIII-IX; Vittorio Riva (batteria e percussioni)

off the rack #1219
Monday, July 2, 2018
It's stinking hot out. I wanted to jump in the lake with the fishies yesterday. We drove downtown on Canada Day to spend time with friends and I lucked out on a parking space right in front of their house. The car in front of us pulled out shortly afterwards so I plunked myself down in that spot to hold it for another friend who was driving in from out of town. People were expecting issues with other drivers trolling for a parking space but in typically Canadian fashion, cars just slowly passed by as I was sitting there under my umbrella to shade myself from the hot sun. Only one car stopped, rolled down their window and asked if I was saving the parking space. I said "yep" and they drove off. I probably would have been shot if I did this in the capital city of another country on the fourth of July.
Hunt for Wolverine: Mystery in Madripoor #2 - Jim Zub (writer) Thony Silas (art) Filipe Sobreiro (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). I like this story. Kitty and her team skulking around Madripoor trying to find Wolverine while being hunted by Viper and her very, very bad girls is right in my wheelhouse. Unfortunately the art turns me right off. Unless Psylocke is a midget, how the heck is Logan taller than she is on page 2? All the women's faces are drawn the same with angular features and almond eyes. Even the different hair styles and clothes didn't help to distinguish them. There is a surprise appearance on the last page that's an attempt to keep readers invested in the story but it is not enough for me to read the rest of this mini.
Old Man Hawkeye #6 - Ethan Sacks (writer) Marco Checchetto (art) Andres Mossa (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Clint is like the flu. Whenever he shows up things go from bad to worse. I love this dangerous future Earth where the super villains are in control. Old Man Hawkeye seeking redemption is a great story but President Red Skull trying to kill Bullseye makes this book that much better.
Multiple Man #1 - Matthew Rosenberg (writer) Andy MacDonald (art) Tamra Bonvillain (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). Yeah, I thought he was dead too. That's why I pulled this off the rack to read. Jamie died during the Terrigen mists killing all the mutants crisis but they have found a way for one of his dupes to survive that made sense. Then they go and ruin it by having this surviving Jamie steal a time traveling device. I loved Jamie when he was leading X-Factor and was sad when they killed him off. This one is younger and they've tweaked his powers with a big twist on the last page. It just might be enough to get you to keep reading this 5-issue mini.
Batman: Harley Quinn vs. the Joker #1 - Tim Seeley (writer) Sami Basri (art) Otto Schmidt (epilogue art) Jessica Kholinne (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). Prelude to the Wedding part 5. Way to screw up the timing DC. This should have hit the racks before Batman #48 and #49 because what happened in those issues involved what happens with the Joker in this one. I had a sense of disassociation when I saw the Joker in the church while reading Batman #48 three weeks ago and now I know why. This screw up will be forgiven if Batman #50 proves to be a good read when it hits the racks July 4. I loved how Harley is drawn in this, even though my least favourite version of her is the Joker infatuated court jester. SOILER ALERT: DO NOT READ the New York Times article about Batman #50 posted July 1.
Saga #53 - Fiona Staples (art) Brian K. Vaughn (writer) Fonografiks (letters). Holy crap in a hat. This is a must read issue if you're a Saga fan. There are major deaths in this issue and that's not including what Brian's doing with all the letters the book receives. If he thinks thoughts of mortality invade in your forties, wait until you get to your sixties.
Sentry #1 - Jeff Lemire (writer) Kim Jacinto (art) Rain Beredo (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). Sentry World part 1. I remember thinking that this super hero was just Marvel's version of Superman when he first hit the racks in 2000 and that his arch enemy the Void was your basic generic super villain. Turns out it's more complicated than that. The Sentry's alter ego sacrificed a lot to save the world from the Void but now Robert Reynolds finds himself in a dangerous situation. Jeff Lemire has taken a character that I didn't much care for and given him a story that I very much want to read now in this 5-issue arc.
Detective Comics #983 - Bryan Hill (writer) Miguel Mendonca (pencils) Diana Egea (inks) Adriano Lucas (colours) Sal Cipriano (letters). There's a new writer and he's starting off boldly by introducing a new Bat-villain and a new super hero to join Batman's team of Gotham City crime fighters. This new bad guy has no qualms about killing so things are going to get intense.
Amazing Spider-Man: Wakanda Forever #1 - Nnedi Okorafor (writer) Alberto Alburquerque (art) Erick Arciniega (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). This new book stars the fierce warrior women of Wakanda, the Dora Milaje. One of their member has turned super villain, calling herself Malice. When she threatens a neighbourhood in Brooklyn guess who just happens to be swinging by? So it's team up time and they fight with a classic Spider-Man super villain under water. When Malice surfaces again she's going after the Black Panthers ex-wife. If Storm's a target then you know that the X-Men will be involved. Look for X-Men: Wakanda Forever #1 to hit the racks July 25.
Silencer #6 - Dan Abnett (writer) Viktor Bogdanovic (art) Mike Spicer (colours) Tom Napolitano (letters). Exit Strategy part 3 or death in a diner. Talia al Ghul and Hope fight through a horde of Leviathan killers during lunch. It was disappointing that Deathstroke wasn't in there. The two new super villains are cool. I am looking forward to seeing what Cradle and Grave are capable of.
Moon Knight #196 - Max Bemis (writer) Paul Davidson (art) Mat Lopes (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Kudos to Paul Davidson for the mad art for this psychedelic story. Now that Maurice and his crazy collective have been straight jacketed we can see where Marc and his many personalities take us next.
Man of Steel #5 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Adam Hughes (art) Jason Fabok (art pages 8 -11) Adam Hughes (colours) Alex Sinclair (colours pages 8 - 11) Josh Reed (letters). Superman's fight with the big bad Rogol Zaar does not go well. He's taken to the brink of doomsday. By the end of this issue we find out how Rogol Zaar is going to destroy the Earth. Meanwhile, more clues are given about what Lois and Jon have been up to. You might want to review recent Superman stories to understand what's happening.
Marvel 2-In-One #7 - Chip Zdarsky (writer) Ramon K. Perez (art) Frederico Blee (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). The truth about Doctor Rachna's duplicitousness comes out at last. Plus Johnny finally learns the truth about Sue and Reed. What a revolting development this is. I'm still enjoying this book very much as Chip has come up with interesting ways to keep Ben and Johnny scrambling.
Thor #2/708 - Jason Aaron (writer) Mike del Mundo (art) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). I'm growing to appreciate the new art style and can see subtle expressions in the faces. Mike's use of colour really enhances the action on the page. Thor and Loki join up with some allies in Hel to fight Sindr and her fire hordes. I had forgotten that Hela was no longer the Queen of Hel (was that in the movie too?) and Balder the Brave was King of Hel now. The surprise appearance on the last page will make the throne room in Hel pretty crowded.
