Honours Update 18/1/17

This week began as a level design week, and turned into a programming week.

Initially, I began by setting up the first 4 rooms, as specified by my plans from last week. Below is a video of the first 4 rooms being played through, with hint text to show the player what to do and guide them through the very basics of the game:

After blocking out the first few rooms, I added wires from the marble goal objects which lead to the door that goal will open; the texture automatically tiles as I scale the object meaning I can use it in a modular fashion. I added an array of Static Mesh Actors to the MarbleGoal blueprint, and for each piece of the wire the texture turns from red to green when the marble reaches the goal.

Below is a video of the first 4 levels being played through; they don’t have any puzzles in, but guide the player through the basic premise of the game as introductory levels.

After this I began adding axis constraints on MovableObjects. Initially, I only set it to be able to constrain XYZ, and X, Y, and Z separately. The objects can now be constrained in these modes: XYZ, X, Y, Z, XY, YZ and XZ. 

In order to do this I save the location of the object when it’s picked up; for XYZ constraint, I don’t do any additional code to what I did previously. For X constraint, I keep the Y and Z of the saved value so it always stays at the same position along those, and update only the X value; for Y constraint, I take the X and Z of the saved value and update only the Y, and so forth for each of the axis constraints. 

I also added in arrows which show in the editor when I select the constraints, so I can see how each object will be able to move in-game. I also tried to differentiate the constraints for the player with materials, but initially I only counted for 4 constraint modes, before expanding to 7 possibilities; I will be updating these materials as I go along

With the constraints working, I noticed an issue that I had experienced previously; objects, when held, can pass through walls.

To do this, I decided to clamp the position of the objects. Below is a diagram of my plan of how to make it work, and thankfully it worked correctly straight off.

On each object, I now have added some SpringArm components; the length of these can be set per-object, and dictate the minimum space needed along the X, Y and Z axes. In the above diagram, they are the solid lines whose lengths are represented by A and B (C is also calculated for depth).

After setting the arm lengths, I trace (represented by dashed lines) from the object in six directions; one to the roof, one to the floor, and one to each of the four walls. I then take the locations of the hits; from the roof hit point, I subtract A from the Z value of the hit location to find the object’s upper height limit; I add A to the Z value of the floor hit to dictate the lower limit. I then repeat for the walls, adding and subtracting B from the X value, and adding and subtracting C from the Y value.

I then use the upper and lower limits to clamp the position of the MovableObject within the room along the given axes.
