Modern au
When asked, Manon would confess that pregnancy wasn't all that great, and she honestly can't understand how some people willingly put themselves through that kind of thing again and again.
The first few weeks were okay; she really didn't think too much of it, and from how things were going she believed it would be smooth sailing. Why were people complaining? Everything is seamless (she really thought she was built different)
A few weeks later, morning sickness began, and with it, Manon's earlier sentiments went out of the window. It was hard and downright brutal. She believes that calling it morning sickness is wrong because it was persistent all day and night long, for days and days and days. Really, it was endless. She was feeling sick most of the time; she wasn't eating and she was tired all the time. During that time there were regular hospital visits because she just kept throwing up and all that dehydration was not good neither does her nor the fetus growing inside of her.
A few weeks later it eased up a little but did not stop. She was still going to the hospital once every few days getting hydrated through an IV because really, her body is not dealing with this at all.
A while later when she was 4-5 months along, she began noticing some spotting. Dorian called the doctor and got them seen almost immediately. Things were okay, they’re baby is doing fine but from that moment on Manon was put on strict bed rest until her daughter was born.
At around the sixth-month mark, Manon was so over being pregnant. "Hate to break it to you, witchling, but you still have three more months to go," Dorian got kicked out of the room that night for his smart remark. But she called him back later on because she was lonely and by that point, she wasn't used to going to sleep without him being there.
It seems that all of her biology lessons in school have evaporated. And she was horrified at finding out some things she was certain she'd remember if she had actually studied them. She honestly didn’t think of what the difference is between giving birth and having a c-section in her mind she was just ‘a baby gets born’ without thinking how that would actually happen (Asterin was the unfortunate soul that discovered this and had to explain it)
'It's not too late to back out from this now, is it?' Asterin only rolled her eyes at her because yeah sure, by all means just stop being pregnant.
Newfound information aside, nothing actually prepared Manon for the grand finale: almost four days of (slow labor) and a little over 30 hours of active labor was all it took for her daughter to be born.
Manon, bless her soul, right in the middle of active labor, (literally her baby is only a few hours away from being born) realized one thing: she wasn’t her ready to become a mother.
The notion terrified her, and she seemed to realize it all of the sudden. She confidently thought that she can stop or try again later (???) but that wasn’t possible for obvious reasons. She wasn’t in pain (thanks to the epidural) but she was terrified. That is something she doesn’t know how to navigate and she was just panicking. She did end up having a panic attack and yeah imagine going through that while giving birth. (She really wasn’t having a good time)
Dorian was right next to her, his presence steadied her somewhat and after a WHILE she finally started listening to him and calmed down enough to focus on the main task.
Honestly the sudden cries kinda distracted her then she realized that her daughter is actually born and it took her a minute to fully realize that it’s all over.
Honestly, she'd rate the experience -10/10 even though her little baby girl is so worth it. She was born a little early (3-4 weeks, nothing too major) and she might have taken over 30 hours but she was out at last.
She won't do this again willingly though. Never.
Manon's both in awe and lowkey wonders of Aelin and Asterin are okay in the head. Her cousin went though this twice (willingly) and Aelin has like four children and Manon just cannot comprehend this.

The Manly Man {Manorian}
31 Days of Halloween: Day 12.
All installments co-written with @snelbz
Based on a prompt sent in by anon: “Haunted House - staged (Manorian - Dorian is the terrified one)”
Warning: Gore.
Autumn/Halloween 2020 {Collection}
Tumblr media
Manon was practically bouncing where she stood.
There were very few things she loved more than being thrilled, and as Halloween was quickly approaching, she found a no better way to spend her Friday night than to take her boyfriend to a haunted house.
She used to work at one, in high school. She was the zombie-surgeon that picked at the intestines of whomever was lying on her table. It had been fun, thrilling. People would come through her room, scream bloody murder, and Manon would applaud herself for her performance every time.
Yes, she loved haunted houses.
Dorian didn’t look so sure.
His hands were shoved into his pockets as he looked at the front door up ahead. There was creepy music playing, and lights flashing, and Dorian looked like he was nearly ready to vomit.
“How you doin’, babe?” Manon asked, eyes narrowed as his throat bobbed.
“Huh? Oh, good,” he said, nodding a little too quickly. “Yeah, no, I’m good. How are you?”
“Great,” she answered, chuckling.
They took another step forward in line.
“So, I want to be clear before we go in there,” Dorian began, clearing his throat.
Manon chuckled. “Yeah?”
“I’m a manly man, and I want that to be noted,” Dorian began.
Manon nudged him. “I think we’ve been together long enough that I know exactly how manly you are.”
He proved it, nightly, again and again, just how manly he was.
“Right,” he continued. “So...when we go in here...just...remember that.”
“You’re scared,” Manon crooned, slipping her fingers through his. “I didn’t think you were the type to get scared.”
The couple had spent every holiday together in the last year, except for Halloween. They’d started dating just before last Thanksgiving, and every holiday had been absolutely perfect. Now, as they fell deeper and deeper in love, the spookiest season was upon them.
And Dorian was not a fan.
He never understood the appeal of being scared, never understood how peeing your pants was considered a good time, and yet, here he was.
At one of the scariest haunted houses in the city, taking another step forward in line.
“I’m not scared,” Dorian replied, at last, shaking his head. “I don’t get scared.”
“You don’t get scared?” Manon asked. “Because it looks like you’d rather be anywhere but here. You know, if you don’t want to go through the haunted house, we can-.”
“No, no,” Dorian protested, quickly. “I don’t… I’d like to go through, yeah. It looks…fun.”
A series of earth-shattering screams echoed from inside the house.
Manon squeezed his hand as they took another step forward. They were almost near the front of the line, and the energy had Dorian’s hands trembling.
The one that wasn’t squeezing Manon’s, anyway.
Once they were next in line, Dorian was about ready to puke.
He hated being scared.
Hated it.
Loathed it.
They entered the building.
The hallway was dark, although flashing lights were going off against the walls. Dorian’s feet had suddenly become heavier, causing him to move slower.
So, incredibly slow.
“We’re going to hold up the line,” Manon said, dragging him along.
“I can’t take my time in this hellhole?” he asked, looking around with every step he took.
“With how terrified you look, I figured you’d wanna get through it as quickly as possible,” she said, quickly, with a sly look on her thin lips.
He shot her an exasperated look. “Be happy that I love you.”
Her grin only widened.
They continued down the hall, the sound system throwing out loud, terrifying shrieks and rolls of thunder. The lights were blinking. Dorian had always hated strobe lights, had always found them annoying.
In clubs.
In haunted houses.
Strobe lights sucked.
But then the lights went out entirely. And with a quiet click, one lone light came on behind them. Dorian turned around and looked back to where they’d entered, only to find a solid wall there.
“Fuck,” he whispered and Manon squeezed his hand, which she chuckled softly. He turned back to look down the hallway and they moved forward, towards the corner that seemed to get darker and darker with every step they took.
“You want me to go first?” Manon asked, smirking over at him.
“No, I will,” he said, picking up the pace. At least he tried to.
As he got closer and closer to the corner, unable to see a thing around the edge, he remembered that Manon probably knew what was around the bend. Whether from experience of going through it herself or just a knowledge of what haunted houses usually were, she had an idea. He was both literally and figuratively in the dark.
And he hated every second of it.
Once Dorian came around the corner, clinging to Manon’s hand for dear life, the lights came on the moment they stepped around the wall. A young girl was tied to an electric chair, looking like she was getting electrocuted, blood pouring from her lips, smoke filling the room.
Dorian tried not to jump, but failed.
Manon scoffed, quietly. “Amateurs.”
“Yeah,” Dorian tried to agree, but his voice cracked, and he was quickly pulling Manon into the next room.
Which was so much worse than the first.
The temperature hit him the moment they walked through the door. Dorian’s foot slipped on something slightly and looked down and gasped as he saw a puddle of blood leaking from a dismembered leg. Manon’s hand was an anchor in his and her other hand gripped his forearm. The frigid temperature unsettled him and as she looked around at the body parts hanging from the ceiling, Dorian really thought he might be sick.
“Come on,” Manon said, gently, pulling him through the room.
He really wanted to look down, to let her pull him through, but his eyes couldn’t look away from everything around him. When they ended up at a large metal table, a man holding a large meat cleaver was slowly sectioning meat off of a bone. He seemed to be focused on his task and just as they were about to pass by, his other first slammed against the table and he held the blade out towards Manon, as he laughed maniacally.
She didn’t even flinch, but Dorian wasn’t proud of the noise that left him. He pulled her toward the door on the far side of the room and tried to move as quickly as he could.
“I’m gonna be sick,” he muttered.
They went through an entry way that led them outside, although the area seemed to be fenced in, which Dorian automatically wasn’t a fan of. It was set up like a trailer park, and there were tall trees surrounding a beat-up trailer. There was a series of coffins scattered across the lawn, and Dorian was scared to move.
“Do you hear banjo music?” Manon whispered.
“Shhh!” Dorian begged, careful for every creeping sound.
“Come on, there’s a door on the opposite end of the wall we go through,” Manon said, pulling Dorian along.
After a second, Dorian became more comfortable. “Well, this doesn’t seem so ba-.” The world's most unsettling scream flew out of Dorian’s lips as the door to the trailer was thrown open and a man with a chainsaw appeared. He was revving it, and hurrying down the trailer stairs.
Dorian’s screams continued as he hauled ass along the wall of the haunted house until he appeared at the door on the opposite end and flung himself inside.
At some point, he had dropped Manon’s hand.
She appeared a moment later, though, in the doorway, grinning uncontrollably.
Dorian’s hand flew to his chest as he huffed and puffed. “I- my heart has legit never beat as quickly as it’s beating right now.”
Manon couldn’t stop her smile as she wrapped her arms around her boyfriend and rested her chin on his chest and gazed up at him. “You okay?”
He rested his forehead against hers and said, “Please don’t ever ask me to do this again.”
She laughed and leaned up and kissed him. “Come on, scaredy pants.”
Dorian realized he was hearing faint music from down the hall, leading to the next room. They walked closer and it became more and more defined and he slowed down. “Nuhuh. Nope.” He stopped moving. “There’s a fucking clown in there, isn’t there?”
“It’s a haunted house, babe,” she said, dragging him forward. “Of course there’s a clown. There’s a mirror maze, too.”
“Oh, great, so I can’t get lost and it can murder me,” he muttered. “Great.”
“I know the quickest path,” she said, with a comforting squeeze of his hand. “We’ll be through it in no time.”
The walked through the heavy, tattered, velvet curtain and it was worse than Dorian could have ever imagined.
Not only was there a mirror maze, but there were clown paintings, statues, constant laughter from everywhere, disorienting him.
“You better be happy I love you,” he said, terrified to even look at Manon and give someone a chance to jump him.
She just shook her head as she led him through the maze, and with every turn they took, Dorian became more and more convinced that this is the way that he would die.
And when the clown jumped out from behind a corner and Dorian saw it’s bloody grin in the reflection of the mirror he stood in front of, he was pretty sure he peed his pants, just a little bit.
“Get me the fuck out of here!” he yelled.
Manon’s laughter reverberated throughout the room as she pulled Dorian just a little bit quicker through the maze.
“The clown has a fucking sledgehammer!” Dorian continued. “My gods, I’m going to die, I’m going to die, I’m going to-.”
Manon pulled them out of the maze and instantly into the next room, which once again had Dorian growing queasy.
Now, he loved Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. It was a classic, a beautiful work of literature.
What he was looking at now, however, was ruining the classic for him, forever.
A mad scientist was laughing, horridly, as he stood above his table, looking down at his monster. There were body parts in jars, ancient, rusty tools everywhere, and eyeballs scattered along the table.
“Please tell me we’re almost out of here,” Dorian muttered.
She rolled her eyes, but squeezed his hand in a comforting gesture and tugged him through the tamest and shortest room yet. When they walked through the door, his senses on red alert, he was surprised to see they were once again outside and the only thing aside from the back half of the creepy house was a corn maze wrapping back around to the front.
“Oh, sweet Mala, thank the gods,” he said, bending over, resting his hands on his knees and gulping down air. “Never again,” he said, repeating his earlier promise. Manon laughed and when he stood upright again, he took her hand and they walked into the corn maze.
It was a chilly night, but that was fine with him. He’d gotten so hot inside that stupid haunted house that the bite in the air was absolutely welcomed. Not to mention, the sky was gorgeous tonight, stars everywhere, not a cloud in sight.
Manon was in the middle of a story about one of her clients earlier that day when Dorian held up a finger and stopped walking. “Do you hear that?”
He wished he hadn’t seen the smile on Manon’s face when she innocently asked, “Hear what?”
He felt the color drain from his face. “I thought it was over, you said it was over. We’re outside!”
Manon kept walking forward, letting her hand stay on the right wall. “I never said anything. You just assumed. Come on.”
She held out her hand and he quickly took it as the sound of a revving chainsaw grew closer and closer.
“Fuck no!” he yelled, and picked up his pace. He didn’t make it far before a bloodied-up zombie jumped out of the corn stalks, making Dorian scream, yet again.
Manon was laughing maniacally, which only terrified Dorian even more.
“If you love me, you’ll get me the fuck out- is that chainsaw getting louder?” Dorian knew he sounded like a complete and utter sissy, but he really didn’t care.
His heart was nearly pounding out of his chest, and his need to pee was unbearable.
“We’re almost out,” Manon yelled, dodging her way around a ghostly bride that had just popped out at her. “Hang in there, babe.”
“How the hell are you so calm?!” he yelled, thinking his feet couldn’t move fast enough.
The roaring behind him grew and he turned to find the masked man from before running at them.
“Fuck, fuck, fuck, please, run!” He cried, pulling Manon’s hand harder as he ran.
She kept laughing as they ran through the maze, Dorian’s breathing becoming heavier and heavier.
He could hear the heavy footsteps pounding right behind them and Manon pulled him around a corner and-.
They were out in the fresh air and there were other people dressed in flannel and jeans and the sound of laughter and excitement.
Dorian groaned as they stopped and he realized that this time it really was over.
“Oh, thank the gods,” he breathed and Manon wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Not that bad, right?” She asked, smirking up at him.
Dorian was still breathing heavily, trying desperately to catch his breath. With a groan, he dropped his face into her shoulder and said, “I'm serious. Be glad that I love you.”
Manon just threw her head back and laughed as she patted her boyfriend’s head and walked him to the safety of her car.

Friendly Rivalry
The first time Lovino met Ludwig Beilschmidt, they were twelve years old. Slytherin and Gryffindor had history of magic and potions together, and Ludwig Beilschmidt sat in the row ahead of Lovino. He was tall, and blond, and Lovino hated him. Why? He wasn’t sure. He just… hated him.
Over the years, though, through the Yule Ball and awkward dates (with other people, mind you) Lovino and Ludwig became friends. That fact was blamed on Lovino’s Ravenclaw brother, Feliciano, because he and Ludwig were friends. (Lovino still wasn’t sure how that had happened.) Both Lovino and Ludwig griped about Feliciano’s longtime crush on his fellow Ravenclaw, Kiku Honda, who was in their year and top of his class and apparently oblivious to Feliciano’s fawning. They watched as Feliciano tried (and failed) to flirt with him, a bit like a very sad sitcom that started out funny but now was just a bit depressing. Lovino and Ludwig still kept up their bickering from second year, but it never had quite the same bite.
Ludwig and Lovino were in their fifth year. They’d been supposed to go with Feliciano to Honeydukes, but he’d unfortunately seen Kiku in the windows of one of the other shops of Hogsmeade. Now they were sitting outside on a stone wall, watching Feliciano trail Kiku like a lost puppy. It was starting to snow and cold. Lovino had shoved his hands into his pockets and was wondering if they could just leave his brother here to bemoan his fate. Instead, he let out a long disgruntled sigh while Ludwig kept awkwardly looking down the street.
“He just wants senpai to notice him.” Lovino muttered. Ludwig snorted, then burst out laughing. “It’s not that funny you moron!”
“But it’s true.” Ludwig wheezed. He was still grinning when a dejected Feliciano came out, complaining that Kiku had barely spoken to him.
“He’ll notice you next time.” Lovino pat his shoulder, though he didn’t necessarily believe it. Ludwig muffled a snort behind his hands but Feliciano did brighten.
When they passed one of the glass windows, Lovino pretended the red on his face was from the wind and not from watching his normally stoic classmate loss his chocolate frogs over something really pretty unfunny.
Lovino realized he liked Ludwig in his seventh year. Ludwig, Lovino, Kiku, Feliciano, and a friend of Lovino’s named Natalia were going to the Yule ball as a big group since none of them wanted to go with a date (rather, Feliciano had been too terrified of rejection from Kiku since last year’s catastrophe) They met up outside of the hall. Lovino and Natalia got there first. She was dressed in a chic white dress that went to her knees and was covered in holly that shimmered in the candlelight, plus short white gloves with her hair swept into a ponytail. Lovino had decided to go in a white suit covered in shimmering frost that his grandfather had sent from Italy. He’d promised the absolute best fashion and to not making him and Feliciano match. (last year really had been a disaster)
To no one’s surprise, Ludwig was right on time. Lovino was too busy peering down the hall to search for his brother and Kiku, but Natalia made a noise of appreciation.
“Now that’s a tall class of butterbeer.” She elbowed Lovino and he looked up. Ludwig’s hair was slicked back (like it always was) and he was dressed in a sharp black tailcoat, along with a black vest. Underneath was a deep red dress shirt. He was wearing black shoes and dress pants and he looked highly uncomfortable as he kept tugging on the sleeves. Lovino got another elbow to the side. “Stop staring and close your mouth.” His jaw snapped shut as Ludwig approached, looking rather relieved.
“I’m not the last one?”
“You’re right on time.” Natalia said. She kicked Lovino when he didn’t say anything. “This one’s brother hasn’t arrived yet, but no one’s surprised.”
“Probably busy ogling Kiku.” Ludwig said.
“You’re not very winter-y.” Lovino muttered finally.
“Red’s a Christmas color.” Ludwig frowned.
“Well, it’s not-”
“He means that you look nice.” Natalia linked arms with Ludwig. Lovino scowled at her and she smiled very sweetly, clearly squeezing Ludwig’s arm. The Gryffindor looked between them in confusion.
Kiku and Feliciano had shown up a bit later, maybe five minutes after Ludwig. Kiku was wearing a nearly-black suit with red lining and a white shirt, while Feliciano was wearing dark green with a grey shirt. They eventually melded with the mass heading into the hall. Natalia was still hanging off Ludwig’s arm and Lovino really didn’t like that. She kept smirking at him, which Lovino hated even more.
They looked really good together. It irritated him and he didn’t understand why. He flipped her off when Ludwig wasn’t looking and she laughed.
The ball itself was fun, even if Natalia hung on Ludwig for too long, and he bid the rest of them goodnight as they parted ways. He power walked in front of Natalia and she laughed at him but didn’t pursue.
Lovino barely slept that night. He kept tossing and turning because how could anyone look that good in a suit (besides him) and just… ugh. This was Ludwig, he wasn’t supposed to be pretty. His heart had beat too fast every time he’d looked at him and it felt all weird and-
oh.
oooooooh fuck.
oh fuckity fuck spaghetti on a stick.
He liked Ludwig.
Lovino drew his silencing curtains very tight, buried his face in a pillow, and screamed.
Despite his newfound… emotions, Lovino didn’t make any move on the Gryffindor head boy. It was the end of seven years of school and too much to deal with. Instead he bitched to his grandfather over holiday breaks (Nonno laughed so hard it seemed like he was about to cry. Lovino may have flipped him off) and did his homework. He pressed in for the final tests, his NEWTs, and he regularly met with his head of house. He’d decided, some time ago, that he wanted to be a professor, and he wanted to work in astronomy. The current Professor, Akila Hassan (her Ravenclaw son Gupta had graduated in seventh year and Feliciano had adored him, which had been a mark in Lovino’s favor because everyone loved Feliciano and Akila had looked at his gruff attitude and thought it was charming) had long been Lovino’s favorite professor and he had always enjoyed her class, but she was nearing retirement age. He’d asked if he could apply for her spot and if she could wait until he could take her place.
He passed his NEWTs with decent enough grades that she agreed - he had to take a two year course at a magically university for teaching and astronomy, and then she’d take him on if she liked his style. He bid his friends goodbye (Feliciano was also aiming to be a professor, hopefully for charms, which meant working with his brother but also working with his brother) at the graduation podium. He really did consider kissing Ludwig goodbye, because Ludwig looked so good in his robes and his red tie with the proud flush on his pale face, but both Ludwig’s older brother (Gilbert, a Hufflepuff who’d annoyed the entire group until he graduated their third year) and father were there and Lovino just wasn’t going to do anything in front of them. So he settled with a handshake that ended up being a hug, and he figured that was the last of that. (did he dream about his cheek being pressed to that magnificently hard chest, inhaling the smell that he could never place but was definitely Ludwig and might have been what he smelled when they brewed amortentia? Perhaps, but he’d deny it if you asked)
Except, two years after he started teaching for good, five years after he graduated from Hogwarts, Professor Binns finally kicked the bucket. Three days later, it was announced who the new professor would be. Ludwig Beilschmidt stepped back into Lovino’s life and he was going to scream because somehow Ludwig was prettier and he just wanted to touch the muscles.
Kiku and Feliciano weren’t very sympathetic. One night at Madame Rosmerta’s with almost all of the teaching staff (as a bonding experience, Headmaster Wang had said, but everyone used it as a chance to drink and have fun. This was two years before Ludwig had come back into Lovino’s life) had resulted in several confessions. Feliciano had told the entire staff that he’d had a huge crush on Kiku in their school years but oh yeah I’m definitely over it now! Nothing more than good buddies! That had resulted in an equally drunk Kiku confessing that he had also had a crush, which then resulted in them snogging in the corner while Gilbert, Alfred, and Erzebet hooted and hollered. Lovino had confessed that he’d had a bit of a crush on Ludwig, which only his brother had heard somehow around the kissing noises.
“You could tell him.” he’d suggested, Kiku’s lips at his neck.
“Who knows what he’s doing now?” Lovino had waved a hand. “It’s fine. It was just a crush. Besides, he’s not even here.”
Well, now he was here and Lovino had a very big problem; every time History of Magic Professor Ludwig Beilschmidt walked past him, dressed in black and red or blue or whatever, Lovino’s heart went doki doki.
He wrote his friend Antonio who played quidditch with the Spanish team, he wrote his Nonno, he complained to his friend Manon, the healer, or Natalia who was now the defense against the dark arts professor. He went out and saw Ludwig doing his morning workouts at the buttcrack of dawn because the man looked good in a tank top and athletic shorts. They talked about business and students, about what they’d been up to, and Lovino had never wanted to kiss him more than watching Ludwig complain about students who couldn’t tell the difference between the goblin wars.
It was driving him mad and no one was helpful. They just told him to confess already or laughed at him.
When they got the positions of the heads of house, after some deliberation by headmaster Yao, their friendship threw itself back into the rivalry of their second year. They exchanged quips over breakfast about the points, they threw themselves into the Quidditch Cup (the first year, Gryffindor won and Lovino was still bitter) and into the House Cup. (Ravenclaw won that year, under the Arithmancy professor Francis Bonnefoy. Both Feliciano and Kiku were smug about that. Lovino and Ludwig bonded over complaining about the snide comments)
Lovino pined away for Ludwig Beilschmidt, who was somehow still none the wiser and he had no idea how this idiot was still oblivious to it. He hated how much his heart sang when he saw Ludwig in his Gryffindor sweaters over winter break, hated how much seeing the idiot smile made his heart do the thing, he just- ugh. It was fine. He’d get over it, eventually. Ludwig had never shown any interest in him anyway.
Almost two years after they’d gotten the heads of houses position, Ludwig informed the rest of the staff that he was going on a trip to Brazil with a few other historians to explore one of the regions rumored to be rich with information and relics from the ancient peoples. He would be gone for at least a month, perhaps two, but he’d return for the school year. Lovino waved as he left with a promise to get dinner at the Three Broomsticks.
When Lovino arrived with Feliciano after visiting their Nonno for most of the summer, he went to Ludwig’s room. The professor wasn’t there. Gilbert, the flying instructor, told him that Ludwig hadn’t been heard from since the beginning of the summer, and that Ludwig’s family was starting to get worried.
Gupta, who’d been speaking with Ludwig a lot before he left, shook his head at dinner when the topic came up.
“Mother had a few places she didn’t visit for any trips.” he said when Erzebet pressed. “Brazil had lots of interesting things for her, she’d always liked history, but there were so many unknowns in the forests and so many curses that she feared she’d never return. I tried to tell Ludwig not to go, but… he said it was too good of an opportunity.” The entire table stared at him.
“You mean he might be dead?” Gilbert asked. Gupta sighed.
“Perhaps. Perhaps he’s just trapped. Brazil is a beautiful but unpredictable place. The area he was going to is… not supposed to be very friendly.”
The rest of the summer was melancholic. They prepared for students but were very aware of the empty seat between Gilbert and Lovino, of the empty classroom at the end of the hall. Lovino hated it. They got a substitute, Vasilica Popescu, for history of magic, and Professor Erzebet Hédévary took over as the Gryffindor head of house until they heard from Ludwig again.
Two weeks into the school year, late at night, there was a great commotion in the hall. Lovino was woken up by his brother’s silvery wolf patronus.
“Ludwig’s here.” Feliciano’s voice sounded frantic. Lovino didn’t listen to the rest of the message, instead pulling on his black robe and running down the hall swearing under his breath.
Ludwig was in the hospital wing, which had taken Lovino a minute to realize. All of the staff was already there and he was speaking with Gilbert, who looked ready to cry or strangle him. Ludwig was still dressed in a brown coat and his arm was being tended to by Manon, who didn’t look happy either. There was a wicked looking cut bleeding through his right arm, like he’d been splinched, and he had a bandage on his cheek. His knee looked odd and his right elbow was clearly broken. Lovino slammed the door open and the staff parted like the sea.
“Where the fuck have you been?!” he snarled it. Ludwig looked up at him with rather wide eyes.
“If you upset him I’m kicking you out.” Manon warned. Lovino waved an acknowledging hand, but he did lower his voice.
“You were gone for months longer than you said! And then it turns out that Gupta was telling you not to go and you went anyways! We got nothing from you, at all, and now you just show up in the middle of the night?! What the fuck is wrong with you?”
Lovino kept going for almost five minutes. Ludwig kept blinking at him rather dopily and it eventually led to Lovino trailing off, because dopy Ludwig was a very innocent and sweet looking Ludwig, and it meant Ludwig was gazing at him like he was the night sky.
Lovino stepped back when the headmaster arrived. Ludwig would be resuming his position as head of house, but he’d be taking some time to recover before retaking his position of teacher.
Ludwig was back on his feet the next morning. His knee had been completely fixed but his arm was still bandaged (Manon had done what she could, but splinchings were nasty things and on top of the elbow she wasn’t taking any chances) and he still had a bandage on his cheek. He was too busy catching up and checking in with the students in his house (all of whom were glad to see him back) to really chat but Lovino caught up with him in the library behind one of the bookshelves, looking at something. He turned when Lovino stepped behind the otherwise empty shelves. They looked at each other, then Lovino huffed.
“If you ever do that again, I’ll beat you with my telescope.” The idea of losing this stupid man had been killing Lovino for literal months, and then Ludwig just showed up with his arm falling off and grinned at him like he was… something? It made his head spin. Ludwig stared at him for a moment, then smiled a little.
“You were worried about me?” Lovino was fairly certain he wasn’t imagining the pink flush spreading across those beautiful cheekbones, but he was livid enough to ignore it.
“You almost died!” Lovino spat. “You just disappeared over the summer and then show up two weeks into the school year with-”
“You were worried about me.” Ludwig was still smiling and it made Lovino’s heart do the thing again. He hated it.
“Yes I was!” Lovino threw his hands in the air. “Are you listening to me threaten you!? Or did the potions Manon gave you addle your brain even more?!” Ludwig just smiled at him dopely again and Lovino had to look away. “Just- don’t do it again.”
“I won’t.” After a moment, Ludwig leaned forwards and kissed his forehead. Lovino’s heart went from fifty to a hundred and he felt his cheeks burn. “I’m sorry for worrying you. I won’t do it again.” Ludwig stepped back, pink cheeked again. “A-after all, I wouldn’t want to get hit with the telescope.”
“Damn right you wouldn’t.” Lovino managed after a moment. His eyes were focused on Ludwig’s lips because wow they were right there and they’d touched his forehead holy fuck. “I… uh… I’m gonna… go. Back to my classroom. I’ll see you at dinner..” Ludwig looked disappointed and Lovino’s heart protested violently.
“You don’t have to.” Ludwig said tentatively. “I could use a bit of catch up on what’s been happening.”
“I… I think I have to.” If I don’t I’m going to kiss you until you’re seeing stars. “You already got the catch ups from everyone else.”
“I’d rather get it from you.” Lovino took a step back and Ludwig reached for him. “Is something wrong?”
“No. Yes. Maybe. I don’t know.” Lovino shook his head. “I… I don’t know. I’m… God…” Ludwig still resembled a confused dog and Lovino finally cracked. He stepped forwards and pulled Ludwig down to proper height, pressing his lips tightly to his. They were warm, a little chapped, and tasted like maple syrup from breakfast. Ludwig froze, Lovino let go, then he bolted out from the shelves. When he risked a glance over his shoulder, Ludwig was staring after him with a completely red face. Lovino turned the corner and left the library. Fuck fuck fuck fuck-
He didn’t go down to breakfast the next few days and he avoided the halls like the plague. Feliciano thought he might be sick but Lovino told him to fuck off when he asked if he needed to see Manon, so Feliciano was less worried.
About a week after, there was a knock on his door. He was expecting one of his fifth years. “Come in.”
Ludwig pushed open the door and Lovino really considered diving under his desk and hiding for the next four years, but he froze instead. Ludwig’s arm was still wrapped up but the cut on his face had healed up. They both stared at each other for a minutes.
“I’ve got a fifth year any time now.” he muttered. “So make this quick.” Ludwig swallowed.
“So… that.” He flailed a little, then pointed at his lips like an idiot. “Was… was that… romantic? I know you and Feli do the kissing thing for greetings, it’s an It-”
“Italians kiss cheeks to say hello, not lips.” Lovino snapped. “And so what, if it was? I’ve liked you since seventh year, and-”
“Hogsmeade.” Ludwig blurted. His face was even more red than his robes.
“...what about it?”
“Uh. I’ve liked you since Hogsmeade. Fifth year.” He buried his face in his hands. “I- Do you want to go at some point, with me? As a… a date?”
Lovino’s Ravenclaw fifth year, Michelle Payet, didn’t end up having her meeting. She peeked inside the open door and found Professor Vargas pinning Professor Beilschmidt to the desk. (This was despite the fact that Professor Vargas was several inches shorter than Professor Beilschmidt.) She very slowly closed the door, then power walked down the hall.
When the pair of professors arrived at dinner that night, all the teachers were grinning. Headmaster Wang glanced up at them as they sat next to each other like they always did.
“I hope that you don’t make a habit of making out during class hours.” he said rather brightly. Ludwig went red, burying his face in his hands, and Lovino just grinned.
“I make no promises.” He loosely took Ludwig’s hand. Ludwig squeezed, and he squeezed back, his heart still making those goddamn doki dokis but at least he knew that Ludwig’s was doing the same thing.

This is all Frukmerunning’s fault. They posted about a Harry Potter AU and it lived in my head rent free for a few days. It’s also their fault that I ship Germano as much as I do now. (and Itapan. Damn you. I’m not sure if I’ve got their characterization quiiiiiiite right but I’m happy with it)
Natalia was included in the Yule Ball group because she was the only person in their year I had (for some reason? I kind of just… estimated the ages as I thought they worked) and I like her. Plus if anyone is going to make fun of Lovino about this, it’s her and Manon and I already had a plan for Manon.
I do have a list of sortings and positions that I made for my own amusement (this took a day of my life I will never get back) I’ll post it under the cut. There’s sort of a rhyme and reason for it but I can’t explain it, so…

Elorcan Modern AU Chapter 5 Elide’s POV
You have got to be kidding me. Lorcan Salvettere is my partner for a 6 week project. I officially have the worst luck in history, I mean how mad must my luck me to have to be partnered with him. I guess Ms. Ansel must have finished reading the names because the time I get out of my shock people are meeting up with their partners. I look up to see Lorcan walking over, with a slightly nervous face. What does he have to be nervous about? He’s not the one who almost got pushed over and apparently might be playing some sort of game with me.
“ Hey..” Lorcan quietly as he sat down next to me.
“ Hey..”
After a couple more minutes of awkward silence Ms. Ansel came around and gave us the topic we would write a debate about.
“ So... when do you want to me.” I asked quietly.
“ Um... I can’t do tonight and after school I have football practice until 4 everyday.”
“ Oh um.. maybe Wednesday at 5:00 we can meet at the public library?”
“ Sure that works.”
“ Great...”
Another couple of moments of awkward silence and of course we both decide to talk at the same time.
“ Oh you can go first” I saw quickly.
“ Oh um.. I just wanted to say sorry about PE class. You seemed pretty uncomfortable.”
I was shocked, I totally forgot that he was there in class when I explained my ankle and was basically embarrassed in front of the whole class.
“ It’s fine, people would have found out at some point.” I said quietly
“ Well I’m sorry that happened to you. I saw you limping earlier and I thought it was because of this morning.”
“ Oh no, I was fine, just shocked this morning. Not the best way to start a new school by almost being pushed to the ground by a door.”
“ Ya, I am sorry about that. I was just frustrated about football.”
“ Like I said it’s fine and you technically already did apologize for it during history. I guess we some sort of odd luck. I mean your the one who I almost ran into, sat next to each other in history, and now this..” I say and immediately regret it.
I looked at him and saw he seemed kinda nervous and uncomfortable. And your stream of luck continues Elide you just started to be fine and you just had to go and ruin it.
“ I guess so. We definitely have some sort of odd luck. “
Thank god, hopefully that doesn’t get brought up again.
“ Yeah.. I guess we can go over some of the basics of this project now, we still have some time before class ends.”
“ Oh sure..”
We talked with ease about different stuff about school and the project for the rest of class. I don’t really get what Aelin and the rest of them were going on about during lunch, Lorcan seemed like a nice guy. Soon the bell rang and school was over for the day.
“ Well I will see you tomorrow morning.” I said quickly as I went to go find one of my new friends and tell them what happened.
“ See ya.”
After leaving class I walked towards the doors to leave school when I saw my friends talking to Maeve and the rest of the Cadre. Somehow Lorcan was already there and he seemed like a different person. I walked closer and I could hear insults being thrown around, including some my Lorcan. Who was this person because it was not the person I was just talking to in class.
“ Well if it isn’t the new little crippled girl,” I hear Maeve say as I walk closer to them.
I see Lorcan look at me with shock and his cold front started to come down.
“ Don’t you dare talk to her like that!” Aelin yells at her.
“ Why should I. I mean she is crippled with her poor little ankle.”
“ Shut it or you will regret it you little bitch.” Manon steps in.
I see Maeve look a little more hesitate as Manon steps in along with Rowan and Dorian.
“ Let’s go boys, we will see the little cripple tomorrow,” Maeve said.
They walked away and I looked at Lorcan and I could see regret and disappointment in his eyes as he walked away with Maeve and the Cadre.
“ Sorry about that Elide, they are a bunch of bullies and bitches,” Aelin says as she goes to hug me.
“ Oh it’s fine, I was expecting it at some point.”
“ Still doesn’t make it right, so how was the rest of the school day?”
“ Oh, um it was good. I got paired with Lorcan for the debate project.” I said not really showing that I was worried about it or that it was a big deal.
I looked around at them with shock and disgust on their faces.
“ You got paired with Salvettere. Maeve’s favorite little cronie and devoted to her?”  “ Oh, ya that’s him. Don’t worry we talked during class and were all good. We’re meeting Wednesday after school at the library to start working on the project.”
They still all looked mad and worried.
“ You and Lorcan worked it out?” Lysandra asked me.
“ Yeah, he apologized again for this morning and about PE class and we talked some about school and the project.”
They looked even more shocked which I didn’t know was possible.
“ He apologized to you to your face?” Rowan asked like it was totally unbelievable.
“ Yeah, I still don’t get why your making a big deal about this. He was nice to me.”
“ Well I don’t know what magic powers you posses Miss Lochan but if you somehow got the Lorcan Salvettere to apologize and be nice to you I defiantly like you.” Aelin said, “ Hey the rest of the girls are coming over to my house for dinner now, do you want to come?”
Now it was my turn to look shocked.
“ Seriously, you want me to come over.”
“ Yeah, your one of us now, and like I said earlier, you’re stuck with us.”
I smiled and was so glad that I really had made a good group of friends.
“ Yeah, let me text my uncle that I won’t be there until later tonight, you guys head out I will be there in a sec.”
They walked away and I was so excited but realized I don’t know what my uncle will say. I take out my old phone which only has his number on it and call him. It rings for a little bit before I hear my uncle’s drunk voice on the other end.
“ What do you want,” he grumbles.
“ Hey, I made some friends at school and they asked if I wanted to have dinner with them.”
“ You made friends, ha!”
“ Yeah I did, so can I go?”
“ hmm.. fine.” and he hung up.
I was relieved he seemed to be in one of his better moods. I quickly got my bags and went to met my friends. I saw them by a white BMW which I assume is Aelin’s.
“ Hey there you are, you ready?” Aelin asked.
“ Yeah my uncle said it’s fine. Let’s go.”
Aelin, Manon, Lysadnra, and I all got into the car, me in the back seat next to Manon. Manon seemed like a girl that many people were scared of, but I had a knack for seeing through people’s façade. I could tell that she was a nice person deep down.
“ So where do you live Elide?” Lysandra asked me.
“ Oh, um about a ten minute walk from school on Hollin Ave.”
“ Oh perfect. When I drop you guys off Lysandra your house is on the way to Manon from Lyandra’s house,” Aelin said
“ Oh you don’t have to drop me off. I can walk or get and Uber or something.”
“ Nonsense, it’s on the way and there’s no way I’m letting you walk in the dark,”
After a couple minutes we pulled into a house, that was more of a mini castle. I mean it was ginormous with pillars at the front with vines growing and was two stories tall with a stone drive in and a gate.
“ The girls often come over here to hang out. It’s practically like a second home to them, so welcome to your second home Elide.”

Miraculous Ladybug, Male! Marinette x Lila, They were partnered up with in a project but they hated each other. They have settled their differences or they would fail the project.
(I’m using @virgil-is-a-cutie ‘s male!Marinette name for this)
When Ms Bustier said they would do the project in pairs Marin could feel the eyes of everyone in class glance hungrily in his direction. There was sure to be a fight for an easy grade. “Partners will be assigned at the end of the lesson so please pay attention!” The teacher informed them. ‘Ha!’ Marin thought as all the greedy vultures groaned and moaned about their lost meal ticket.
“That leaves Alya and Juleka as the last girl team and Lila and Marin as our last co Ed team!” Ms Bustier said way too cheerfully for someone that just sent a guy down the river. “Remember I want to see effort from both of you in your project for this lesson, think of it as your idea child. Raise it together with love and care!” The woman added a happy little half clap to emphasize her giddiness at the prospect.
Marin held back an eye roll that he was sure several other students could share. At least it was a subject he liked so if he had to do all the work he wouldn’t be struggling. The plopping down of a bag jars the bluenett out of his musings huh Alya left already and when he looks up he sees his nightmare hasn’t ended yet, “Hey~ Marin. So I guess we’re working together huh?” Lila asks feigning innocence and dripping artificial sweetness. When he doesn’t address her right away she tilts her head and pouts, if he didn’t know it was all an act he might have been swayed into being sorry.
He heaved a sigh to rivial a tiny god’s and puts on his ‘customer service’ smile, “Guess so. So do you have an idea for what we should do? I’m all ears!” Might as well jump to it and prepare for the worst. She surprises him by pulling out a piece of paper with some sloppy writing on it. “I might have one idea.” She beams, ew she can fake that too is that healthy?. “Oh cool.” Came his less than enthusiastic reply as he tried to read the paper, “So what IS the idea?” He finally asks after getting nowhere trying to read from the paper. Lila grinned and this time if was the kind her was used to, the sly cruel smile of a Predator on the hunt.
“I’m glad you ask Marin! It just so happens that my grandpapa’s work involved research of this area. We have some of his old journals at home. We practically have this done!” She boasted, and for a lie this one seemed rather...dumb to say the least. How was she going to get out of something so plainly’put up or shut up’? “So I guess we’re doing it at your place?” He remarks as he looks back at his notes for the list of suggested topics. A sound like a strangled cat catches his attention back to the brunette, she was red in the face and sputtering, “excuse me? Come again?” She wheezes between two steadying breaths. He’s confused at to what set her off but he repeats himself, “Are we doing the project at your house? Where the journals are?” And by golly she goes from looking mad to being embarrassed. “Oh, sure” comes the oddly soft response.
After school Marin texted his parents that he’d be home for dinner and prayed that if this was some kind of murder plot that they would at least start the search for his body quickly. The awkward silence dragged on until it got to be too much for the boy so he asks, “So what did your grandpa do?” After a few steps Lila answers with a grand sweep of her hand towards a front door. “You’ll just have to see, welcome to the Castello Rossi!” For all the grand showmanship it’s a very plain looking house, well kept but plain. “How nice, I like your plants.” Marin comments trying to be civil since they still have work to do.
As Lila opens the door with another grand gesture Marin is shocked to see how empty and impersonal it feels. Most of the front room looks unlived in with just two picture frames sitting on the mantle. “Mama won’t be home till later so let’s go to the office and get as much done as we can.” She states, beckoning him to follow. The office is a stark contrast to the room earlier, stacks of important looking paper tower on the dark wooden desk, Knick-nacks and books fill the shelves, and family phones are scattered along the walls. While Marin is taking it all in Lila goes to a shelf in the corner and pulls out two worn out sketch books.
As it turns out Lila’s grandpa was part of a team of anthropologists that studied post World War I art and his books were a mix of notes on the how the war changed how the art had changed and sketches of people he had interviewed. It was all so fascinating and emotional. Marcelo Rossi had a way with words, Marin felt like he could hear the man’s voice narrate as he read entry after entry. They easily got most of their project done, the impact of WWI in everyday life, all they needed was a second source and they would be finished. All in all it was a not horrible experience, maybe if Lila could shape up they could really be friends like everyone wanted.
Ending 1: not so bad
Marin was surprised that in the week and a half that they had been working together to discover the Rossi family were well known in nitch circles of the anthropology and archaeological sciences. He had seen a picture of her great aunt recording the dying language of the Tihan people of Tiahana, gotten to read the musings of the eccentric late great-great-uncle Sal who studied prehistoric plants. They were amazing people who changed their fields, it was a wonder Lila depended on lies to get attention. When the day of the presentation came up Marin was excited to share what they had written, Lila even brought scans of the sketch books to pass around. Everyone else’s reports were pretty standard in comparison so when it was their turn they knocked it out of the park!
After class Marin walked out with Lila like he had done everyday for a week when to realized that he didn’t need to follow her anymore. It caught him off guard at how sad that made him, he liked seeing the real Lila under all the lies and faux confidence. Did they really have to pop their little bubble just because they didn’t share a goal anymore? “Aren’t you coming?” Lila asked tugging on Marin’s sleeve, “We need to celebrate, that report was definitely an A. We deserve a treat!” She declares, dragging the less than reluctant boy along with her. They announced their relationship a few days later to the cheers of the class.
Ending 2: how did it end up like this
Marin had gotten to know the real Lila over the week and a half they worked together. He had really gotten through to her as he assured her that what her family did was interesting and there was no need to hide behind her web of lie. She agreed to come clean to the class with Marin to vouch for her after the project. He was really proud of her and was planning on asking her to lunch together later that day.
Strangely when they walked in that morning in prep for the report Marin felt the burning feeling of eyes boring into the back of his head. Ms Bustier met them at the bottom of the steps, “Lila is it really a good idea for you to come in today with everything that you’ve done?” The teacher inquired with a grit of her teeth. A murmur rippled through the room as Marin realized the glares weren’t aimed at his mmm for a change. Lila paled and looked around the class before focusing back on Ms Bustier, “What’s going on? What do you mean by what ‘I’ve done’?” The brunette asks a bit nervously.
It was Alya that stood up and pointed an accusing finger at Lila. “You lied about everything, you made me think you were going to help me with my career! You just strung us along like puppets!” She roared, Juleka had to hold the journalist back from rush the Italian. “Alya sit down! I will handle this!” Barked Ms Bustier, looking very run down and already very tired for the time of day. If Marin though Lila was pale before then she looked ghostly now, her eyes looked huge on her face as she looked at the struggling Alya. “As you can see. It would be best if you spent the day with the principal. Your mother should be here soon” the teacher growled.
Just then Juleka lost her grip and Alya rushed forward making Lila bolt out the door. Marin braced his body, the same way he did when Manon tries to escape to cling to her mom, and grabbed Alya around the middle and kept her from chasing his friend. “Why are you stopping me! She lied, you know she lied!” Raved the girl trying to wrestle her way out of his grip. “She played us!” She snarled. “She played you like the cheap kazoo you are!” Marin responded in kind. “I told you before it was a problem that she was lying but none of you would hear me out, you asked for proof, you called me envious! But it’s now that I like her and she promised to come clean that you choose to see the truth!? Fuck you guys!” He yells, dropping Alya on her ass and running after Lila.
He finds her crying in the hall that leads to the principal’s office. Her eyes are red and puffy, it breaks his heart to see her scrubbing her face in an effort to make the tears stop. Kneeling down next to her Matin holds his arm out so she can curl up into his side. “Don’t worry about them. They never knew the real you. After all the talk they spout about friendship and loyalty and giving chances they never even tried to get to know who was under all the celebrity stories. They all dropped you without asking questions or giving you a chance. So don’t worry about them. You have me.” He promises, rubbing her back soothingly. They wait there a long time before Mrs Rossi arrives, Marin stays for the meeting holding Lila’s hand through the whole ordeal. With compromises on both sides Lila is allowed to stay in the school but she will be switching classes and seeing a councilor. After Marin walks Lila and her mom back to their car, it might not be the best time but he’s not sure when he’ll get the chance again, “Once you’re not grounded anymore will you go out for coffee with me? Or a movie, I don’t even know if you like coffee.” He rambles get stopped in their tracks when Lila leans over and places a peck on his cheek. “I’d love to” she smiles, eyes still a bit wet, before having to close the car door and drive away.

Summary: Manon Blackbeak is flawless, untouchable. From the outside at least. Her grandmother pushes her to achieve greatness, and she doesn't let anyone get too close in fear of being hurt. How can anyone love her when not even her parents could?
Dorian Havilliard has always felt safe and confident around his friends. He might not have the greatest of families, but with Aelin and Chaol by his side, nothing can go wrong. That is until he tries keeping his greatest secret from them.
What will happen when Dorian and Manon gets to know one another? Can two lost souls find their way back together?
Tumblr media
‘Cause I’m gonna be free and I’m gonna be fine
But maybe not tonight
-Florence + The Machine, Delilah
Manon stared into her history book as the desks around her slowly filled up with students.
People were talking about their summers. Parties and hook-ups and vacations and memories made with friends.
She couldn’t have cared less.
The classroom buzzed with excitement over a new semester, a new year. She couldn’t have cared less about that either.
Manon only wanted one thing: To stay focused on her grades, get into a good college and get out of this hellhole. Only the best will do. You don’t want to end up like your mother, do you?
Shaking off her grandmother’s words, she looked up just in time to see Elide Lochan enter the classroom. The girl was wearing a light blue dress, wavy, dark brown hair cascading down her back, and she was headed straight towards Manon. Fuck.
She had managed three years of high school without having to share a class with Elide, but apparently her luck had run out.
Lochan was a walking ray of sunshine. Always smiling, always talking, always caring. She had been Manon’s best friend once, but that was a whole other story.
«Is this seat taken?» Elide asked, still smiling. Manon looked around to see that all the other desks had already been filled up with students.
«I guess it isn’t,» she answered drily before diving back into her book, trying her very best to ignore the girl sitting down next to her.
Elide put down her backpack, taking out her books and placing them in front of her. «How was your summer?»
That girl will only slow you down, stopping you from reaching your goals.
Manon shrugged, not taking her eyes away from the textbook.
She will find new friends as soon as you start high school anyway.
Elide - clearly not taking the hint - spoke again: «I really miss you, Manon.» Her voice seemed hurt, but Manon was certain she could hear a sliver of hope as well.
«No, you don’t.» She still couldn’t look up, couldn’t see the crushing disappointment surely written all over Elide’s face now.
You need to stay focused. You need to study, and not spend your time giggling over make-up and boys.
The next time Elide spoke, Manon lifted her gaze in surprise, for her voice was not shaking, it was hard, almost cold, as she said: «You think you can push me away, but I don’t believe any of this stone cold act you’re putting on. I see you, Manon.»
«No, you don’t,» Manon replied quickly, voice emotionless.
Elide didn’t cower under her stare, didn’t look away. She looked angry, and just as she was about to speak again, the teacher walked in.
Manon turned to face the board, their teacher clapping his hands together before saying:
«Welcome back! Before we get started on today’s lesson, I just want to let you know that the places you have now will be your places for the rest of the semester.»
Fuck.
-
Dorian was walking down the hallway with Aelin, who was furiously ranting about some book she had just finished.
«-and then she went to find this creature so it could tell her how she could heal him, and it reveals that they’re fucking mates! It was insane! So she did the only sensible thing, she stormed off, leaving him, but a few days later he finds her and he tells her everything and she accepts the bond - and believe me, I was sobbing when I read that part - and then they have sex for like 20 pages or something, it was wild - there are other scenes like that too and I didn’t know so I was reading the first one in front of my mom, and she just goes: you okay there Aelin? You look a little warm. I shit you not, she actually said that as I was reading this super steamy scene - anyway, you think everything will be fine but on the last pages EVERYTHING goes to hell and then it just ends!»
Dorian failed to hide his grin as Aelin gestured wildly. She looked mad. «You done yet?»
Aelin gave him a sheepish smile as she said: «Yes, I’m done. I can’t wait for you to read this so we can discuss it together.»
«I’m gonna start it as soon as I have finished my current read, did I tell you about that?»
But Aelin wasn’t listening anymore, Dorian noticed. She had stopped, her smile gone as she was staring at something ahead of them.
Dorian followed Aelin’s gaze until his eyes landed on Manon Blackbeak, standing by her locker, listening to her cousin with a bored expression. She was one of the seniors - just like them - but Dorian had never actually spoken to her. They had never shared any classes, and she wasn’t someone you could just walk over to and start a conversation with.
No, Manon Blackbeak was untouchable.
As Dorian looked at her, he had to admit she was rather pretty. She had long, silky, white hair, full lips wearing a bright red lipstick and her light brown eyes looked like molten gold.
Stop staring, you creep, he scolded himself, shifting his attention to Aelin.
«You okay?» Dorian asked his friend.
Aelin finally seemed to come out of her trance. «Yeah, she just gives me the creeps,» she said, nodding her head towards Manon. «I had PE with her last year, and I swear to god, she has the emotional range of a teaspoon.»
He looked over at her, smirking. «Did you just quote Harry Potter? Nerd.»
She lightly punched his arm. «We both know I could recite the whole series from memory,» she replied, rolling her eyes at him. «Besides, you took that reference. Nerd,» Aelin mocked back, mimicking his voice and sticking her tongue out at him.
Dorian laughed before realizing they now stood outside the science classroom. «Shit! This is my stop. See you at lunch?»
Aelin gave him two thumbs up and a grin before disappearing into the crowd.
As he stepped into the classroom, his mind wandered back to silky, white hair and a pair of golden eyes. Aelin might believe her to be incapable of feeling, but the depth of those eyes told a different story. A story Dorian wanted to hear.
-
«-five, six, seven, eight. And one, two, three -.» The music came to a halt, Manon turning around to face the rest of her team.
«Why did we stop?» Vesta asked, panting slightly, always the first to speak.
Manon didn’t have the patience for this. Today had been stressful enough as it was. After having to spend an entire history lesson with Elide Lochan, her day had progressively gotten worse. It was only the first day of school, and she had already been assigned with two tests and a two-thousand word essay.
«You’re falling behind again, Sorrel,» Manon answered, annoyance clear in her voice.
The routine wasn’t that hard. As long as you focused on the music, it was easy to coordinate the moves.
She could see Asterin rolling her eyes as her cousin bit back: «It’s the first practice after summer vacation! We should start with something easier to get back into the rhythm.»
«You should be in ‘the rhythm’ already. Actually, you should have spent your summer getting better. All the progress we had before vacation is gone now. If we wanna beat Iskra and her team we need to step up.»
You need to be the very best. Always. I won’t accept any less.
Manon could see that Asterin was about to protest, but she beat her to it. «And need I remind you, Asterin, who’s captain of this team?»
She turned the music back on, her grandmother’s words still repeating in her mind.
«We’ll keep practicing this until you know it backwards.»
-
Dorian was lying in bed, looking at old photos, an episode of BuzzFeed Unsolved playing in the background.
He kept scrolling until he reached a photo of himself and Aelin grinning madly as they were riding a rollercoaster. He remembered Chaol chickening out at the last minute, how Aelin clutched his hand as they neared the top, himself puking into a trashcan as soon as they got off. It was taken years ago, but Dorian could still hear the children screaming in frightened delight, could still taste the cotton candy he had shared with his friends, could still smell the popcorn.
If he focused hard enough, he could still feel what it was like being a child. When you had nothing to worry about, because your dad was the strongest, bravest person in the world and your mom could fix every problem.
But it wasn’t like that anymore. They had grown up. Dorian had grown up, and along the way he had realized that his dad was a weak and pathetic coward and his mom could barely handle her own problems.
He looked back at the picture. It wasn’t just his family that had changed.
Dorian, Aelin, Chaol.
It had been the three of them for as long as he could remember. Dorian couldn’t even recall how they had met. Aelin and Chaol was a constant in his life. The one thing he could always rely on, no matter what.
All of that was changing now. He could feel it.
They would soon be scattered across the country for college, and Aelin was spending much more time with Rowan, now that he was her boyfriend.
That isn’t the only thing keeping you apart, a voice inside of him said.
It was also the matter of the secret he kept from them.
Dorian still hadn’t told them he was bisexual. His stomach grew heavy as he yet again reminded himself of the fact.
He didn’t know what he was so scared of. They would without a doubt support him - and he wasn’t ashamed of his sexuality, not in any way - but it was always a possibility, always a what if? And if he told his friends it would be out in the world, and Dorian would no longer have all the control.
The secret inside him kept tugging and tugging, fighting it’s way out, but something stopped it.
Dorian hated himself for not being able to just say it.
He was done letting this get in the way of his friendship.
This was the last year they all had together before going separate ways. He didn’t want to spend it pretending to be someone he was not.
He just had to find the courage first.
A/N: And we're getting started!

the best of me (chap.4)
“If anything bad happens I flush the rings, I leave my bestman spot to Baz, and I fly back to Paris.“
OR. Eliott and Lucas have never worked up the courage to actually make a move, and thus spent years dancing around each other without ever acknowledging their feelings. However, an engagement party gone a little too wild, an hotel room and a very bad idea might be all it takes to make everything blow up. (read on ao3)
Actively avoiding Eliott wasn’t something Lucas was very good at, specifically because he hadn’t tried to do so in years. Even back in high school, his attempts invariably failed to the point where he had, at least on one occasion, literally slammed head first into him in the hallway.
Back then it wasn’t exactly serious. The only noticeable moment where he had tried was during the week following the worst double-date he had had to this day. Lucille was still in the picture at the time and Lucas had somewhat let himself be talked into spending an evening with Eliott, Eliott’s girlfriend, and the girl he was dating at the moment — Chloé. All things considered, he could have never predicted the outcome of that evening. He certainly hadn’t expected Eliott, sweet Eliott, funny Eliott, charming Eliott, bouncy Eliott, to constantly snap at his girlfriend all through the night, until he could just not take it anymore and was forced to fake an emergency situation to get the hell out of there — something about his back-then-roommate Mika forgetting his keys. It wasn’t like he held Eliott accountable for the shitty night per se, but it was just that he didn’t get what his friend was still doing with her considering he had told him once that their relationship wasn’t going anywhere anymore.
Other times had included avoiding Eliott as to not cross path with his philosophy-major-boyfriend, and occasionally Macha, but those times had never included avoiding Eliott’s texts. That was a brand new feature, apparently. Five of them had been piling up onto each other through the afternoon, but he still hadn’t read any of them. “Later” in his books generally meant “as late as possible”, which is why he indulged into typical tourism activities by sneaking his way in the little group formed by Imane and Nola — what he hadn’t planned, however, was that Manon would be here as well. He had been too caught up in losing his sanity to remember about the awkward run-in with Manon earlier that morning, and it was only when he realized she seemed too invested in their trip to the Sagrada Familia to care about his business that he started breathing a little bit better.
What he anticipated a little too late was that playing tourist in a big city like Barcelona all the while riding a hangover in the midst of summer was probably not be anyone’s go-to adventure while on vacation, for plenty good reasons that involved his headache and his general state of tiredness. He allowed himself a time-out far from the crowd on the forecourt of the basilica while the girls eagerly took a spot at the back of the line of visitors.
He was tempted to join them after a while — God knew he could use a little bit of fresh air at the moment — but his laziness highjacked that particular thought and he dropped it, staying put in the semi-shadowy spot he had managed to find outside. He hadn’t been to Church in years, and hadn’t even entered one since his mom’s funeral. Frankly? He had never been a true fan and years later he still very much wasn’t. It was gloomy. Impressive, even, in the kind of way that made his insides twist painfully and the hair rise up at the back of his neck.
“Who peed in your cheerios?”
His eyes darted up to meet Imane’s quirked brow, and he shrugged it off as he pocketed his phone. “Charming.”
“You sure look like you’re having a blast.”
“I don’t like churches.”
She snorted, then perched herself next to him. “But you’re an architect. Don’t tell me that visiting the-” she paused to read the brochure, “’one-of-a-kind temple’ and the ‘fruit of the work of genius architect Antoni Gaudí’ doesn’t sound like the kind of nerdy things you like?”
Lucas gave her an unimpressed look. “Do colonoscopies excite you?”
Imane shot him a squinty look. “Oh, okay, nice. What’s with the long face? We’re in Barcelona till tomorrow morning, you could at least pretend you’re enjoying it and keep the long face for another day, what do you think?”
He rolled his eyes and wiped a drop of sweat running down his neck. “I’m having the worst hangover of my life, is all. And I got a stroke yesterday afternoon when we were chilling by the pool so I don’t think you’d want to be in my shoes.”
“I never wanted to be in your shoes in the first place, but yeah, you’re right, I definitely don’t.”
He huffed, then adjusted the glasses up his nose. “Got any vacation plans for the rest of the summer?”
“Family trip to Morocco next month,” she said with a sigh. “Sofiane’s mom and mine are calling every day to make sure we’re still in. Honestly I’m about to lose my mind. Never thought that my family and Sofiane’s hitting it off would be such a pain in the ass,” she grumbled.
Well, that was at least one thing he wouldn’t have to worry about, he refrained himself from adding. It was one those thoughts that dampened the atmosphere when in fact it was really no big deal. Sure, sometimes he felt bad about his family situation, about not being in speaking terms with his dad, about his mom being dead and all, but it wasn’t like he could do something about it.
“The perk of being single,” he shrugged instead.
“How many are there?”
Lucas pondered the question. Well, objectively, it wasn’t that bad. He didn’t have to share his attention, he didn’t have to try so hard to make someone else’s schedule fit with his own, and he wasn’t stuck with a bad lay for boyfriend — it did happen before.
“I do what I want. Counts as plenty,” he shrugged.
“Now you just sound like a three year old.”
“And you sound just like Yann,” he retorted. “Celibacy isn’t a disease. Have you seen how Manon is thriving ever since she’s single?”
“Yeah but that’s because she’s got a thing for pedantic, controlling and slightly neurotic douchebags,” Imane waved. “You just like to sabotage your relationships.”
He gaped at her, offended. “What do you mean, I sabotage my relationships? I got cheated on twice, thrice if you count sending nudes to your ex while in a relationship!”
She sighed and shifted a little bit more towards him. “Are we doing this again? Frankly, Lucas, you don’t know what you want, and it’s starting to show. You got pissed at Kevin for dragging out making you meet his family and six months later you got pissed at Maxime because you felt like ‘meeting the in-laws didn’t just feel right at the moment’…”
“We were barely a month into the relationship,” Lucas interrupted.
“… You vetoed every single apartments you visited with Benjamin until he dropped the idea of the two of you moving together…”
“He didn’t make millions, how did he even plan on going through every rant?”
“… and then you got mad at Will because it didn’t seem like he wanted to stick around…”
“He ended up cheating,” Lucas snapped. “You can’t put this on me.”
Imane took off her sunglasses long enough to spare him a scowl, then she sighed. “Whatever things they see in you is beyond my understanding.”
*
The rest of the afternoon rolled around quickly. Quietly, in a way. The girls excitedly commented their trip inside the Basilica while they were getting ice-creams and they celebrated with a round of selfies featuring Nola’s fake engagement ring, that Alexia had made out of the neon-pink straw from her watermelon smoothie. Later they did some shopping in a gift shop before getting back to the hotel just as Lucas’ headache had gotten unbearable all over again — he was also positive he had gotten a sunburn on the back of his neck, which was the cherry on top, really. His only thought as they rode the elevator up to his and Nola’s floor was to fall flat on his bed and take a well-deserved nap before dinner — so much that he almost missed the moment Nola called him in the deserted hallway, once the elevator had gone to the last floor with the rest of the girls.
He turned a curious face on her and she seemed embarrassed for a second, tucking a strand of her sandy-blond hair behind her ear a couple of times. “You’re not- uh, you’re not mad about Yann proposing, are you?”, she said, sounding rather hesitant.
He frowned. “What?”
She took a step or two closer, a small crease between her brows indicating that she was sincerely worried. “I mean, you’d tell me, right?”
It was kind of a shitty position, if he was being honest at least to himself. What was he supposed to say? That he wasn’t mad about them being engaged while still thinking it was a shitty idea? “What makes you think so?”, he asked, hoping that his attempt at deflecting had been somewhat smooth.
It seemed to be, considering that Nola didn’t appear to notice. “I don’t know, you look a bit… grumpy, ever since you got here. And at first you gave your ticket plane to Alexia last minute, so it kinda looked like you wouldn’t come at all,” she confessed, then before he could say anything she rambled again: “‘Course, I’m not judging, I know what it’s like, to be completely overworked, because, you know, hospital life and stuff but-”
Lucas winced to himself. “Look, Nola, it really has nothing to do with you. Or with the wedding, or with Yann. Okay?” he smiled, perhaps a bit tightly. “He’s my best friend, of course I want him to be happy. I’m just a bit off and all that summer heat makes me sick.”
Nola pursed her lips a little and nodded. “Yeah. Okay, I’m just- I’m sorry.” She pulled a face. “I know I’m overthinking and all. It’s just that I’m always so busy, and I don’t have much time to hang out with all of you guys in the end. Meanwhile, Daphy’s always there and… well, even though I know Yann’s moved on from Emma, she’s just there all the time, just like Manon. So in the end the only one who isn’t there, well, it’s me… And you’re his favorite person on Earth probably.” She sighed and rubbed her arm nervously. “It makes me feel self-conscious at times. It’s stupid, I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine, really. I’m just- uh, I’m just gonna lie down a bit before dinner.”
She smiled encouragingly. “You’re right. You look a little pale. I see you later.”
He nodded and she walked past him with a small wave to get to her hotel room.
Once he found himself alone, Lucas searched his pockets to find the key to his own, which made it all the more difficult to ignore the fact that he hadn’t even checked his phone for the last couple of hours, because it was still opened on the conversation with Eliott, and that as soon as he’d unlock it all the texts he had not read since his “Is it later already?” from this morning would be marked as such. And since avoidance really was his only coping mechanism at the moment, he was just stuck being a coward.
He really needed to lay down.
*
Lucas didn’t know what was in the air tonight, or if there was anything at all going on in the first place, but right now he regretted leaving his hotel room.
Things were awkward. And not just regarding whatever situation he was in with Eliott. Thing was, he had expected that Eliott would say something about them not seeing each other all day. He had prepared himself for the puppy look™ and for the eventuality of being called out grumpily. What did he get? Nothing. When he started mumbling an half-hearted apology about napping and not seeing his texts, Eliott had shrugged.
“It’s fine. No big deal,” he had said as they walked inside the restaurant. Ever since, Lucas had been on the freaking edge, waiting for the other shoe to drop. There was just something. The restaurant wasn’t the cause of anything weird happening, it was actually a rather nice place; they had two tables set on the terrace at the back, and they could make up the faint some of some jazzy music being played in a bar, a little further down the street.
The problem actually seemed to be within the group, for some reason.
The conversation was never picking up more than a couple of minutes on either end of the table, everyone going back to a kinda awkward silence in-between where you could just hear the silverware clicking against the plates. He couldn’t remember the last time something like that had happened — there sure had some hella awkward moments when Manon and Charles had gotten back together, but it had happened a lifetime ago. Usually at least Basile was up to entertain some kind of conversation, no matter how stupid it was, yet even him was oddly quiet. He was sitting close to the opposite end of the table from where Lucas was, but even from there he could see Daphné deliberately not talking to him, choosing to make conversation with Manon instead.
“What’s up with them?” Lucas enquired as he leaned towards Yann, who was sitting next to him.
He spared a glance and waved. “Don’t mind them. They’ve been in a crappy place for most of the afternoon. Apparently, Daphné’s real pissed about something.” He reached for his glass to take a sip of water. “For all I know in an hour it might be just good as new. Not worth the trouble to ask.”
Lucas let out a small snort. That was definitely an explanation, he thought as he went back to travel the food from one side to the other of his plate. It was a shame the heat and the remains of his hangover had put a lock onto his stomach because generally he liked everything that tasted a bit spicy and had shrimps in it, but right now he could barely bring himself to take a bite every now and then. A few seats away, Alexia was chatting with Eliott whenever he wasn’t entirely focused on whoever was texting him constantly since they had all sat down earlier. Lucas spared a casual glance in their direction when Eliott turned his phone for her to see some picture on display on an Instagram account.
Emma shamelessly peered above her shoulder. “No way, you scored the waiter from yesterday?,” she asked, eyes widening.
“Yeah”, Eliott shrugged casually as Alexia gave him back his phone. “I went back there to grab a drink this afternoon and we talked. He’s kinda cool.”
Arthur leaned forward, on the other end of the table, to get in Eliott’s visual field. “You do know that the concept of one night stands is based on the fact that there’s little to no conversations involved in the process, right?”
“Yeah, what happened to you being too romantic to bone someone at the back of a restaurant?” Emma snickered.
“I never said it’d be a one night stand,” Eliott snorted, shaking his head. He picked up his phone just as it pinged with another notification.
“And what do you plan on doing then? Bringing him back with you to Paris?”
“Sending love letters?”
Eliott fired another… whatever, text or comment or god knows what, then set his phone screen down on the table and picked up his fork. “Shut up, we’re just talking.”
Lucas bit back any mean comment he could make at the moment and tried to focus on his plate. The conversation soon drifted back onto more pressing matters, starting with their return to Paris the following morning. His attention was slowly but steadily wandering away when, in the middle of a few chuckles around the table, he heard Eliott’s voice. “Nah, I was just thinking about staying a couple more days.”
“Really?”, Alexia said, thoughtful.
“Yeah,” Eliott nodded. “I’ve got nothing urgent waiting in Paris, which is, like, number 1 perk of being between two jobs, I guess?”
“That’s cool. I kinda wish I could stay too,” Daphné sighed, resting her chin in the palm of her hand. “Maybe we should organize a little-”
“Don’t tell me you’re staying for him,” Lucas scoffed, cutting her off mid-sentence as he pointed at the phone from his fork. It seemed to surprise everyone, starting with Lucas himself.
“Why not?” Eliott retorted, looking back at him. “He’s hot and he’s nice.”
Probably if you liked dummies who spent half their time posting stupid pictures of their abs on Instagram. He didn’t even need to see the picture from earlier to know he was just typically that guy. He had dated one of those, and all he could gather from that experience was that all the fucking clichés were true.
“He’s hitting on you!” Lucas exclaimed. “Of course he’s nice! As soon as he’ll have boned you he’s just gonna move onto the next one.”
Imane huffed. “Wow, really classy Lucas, even coming from you.”
Suddenly everyone was staring at him around the table, but he couldn’t be bothered to care. “Oh come on,” he insisted, “it’s practically part of the job description, right Em?”
Emma shrugged. “He’s not wrong. I mean, if he were into me, I’d-”
“Whatever. I don’t need you to tell me what to do, in case you haven’t noticed,” Eliott bit back.
“Oh for fuck’s sake, you just don't go around falling for people you met twice! How can you be so immature?”
“Isn’t that a Disney song or something?”, someone mumbled, somewhere around the table.
“Right,” Eliott huffed dryly, “because you're such an example of maturity when it comes to dealing with your stupid emotions and your fucked-up relationships.”
“Oh yeah? And what about it?”
“Guys-,” Yann tried from the other end of the table, but he was cut off almost instantly.
“You know what,” Eliott snapped, “you're right, next time I should just get down on my knees three minutes after meeting them the first time, thanks for the tip.”
“It's got fucking nothing to do,” Lucas shouted. “This was a hook-up. You're just physically unable to do that and everyone fucking knows it, and guess who’s gonna have to deal with you being all depressed when you'll finally figure shit out, like all the other times?”
“Oh for fuck’s sake,” Daphné intervened, “don’t act like you get to have an opinion just because you slept with him once!”
Lucas’ eyes snapped to her at the exact same time he felt the ground was opening under his feet to finally, finally swallow him up for good. There was a deafening silence as soon as the last word had fallen out of her mouth, and for a second nothing happened, as if everyone was frozen into place. He could feel Eliott’s eyes on him and it took him an extra-second to muster enough courage to meet them. Frankly? He wished he never did. There was a whole bunch of emotions packed in those stormy-grey eyes, but none of which Lucas had ever wanted to see directed at him — and worse, no trace of surprise whatsoever. Before anyone could say anything, Eliott grabbed his phone, and stood up in a loud scrap of his chair against the ground.
Alexia spun around on her chair. “El-,” she tried, but Eliott blurted a ‘don’t’ as he strode out of the terrace and disappeared inside the restaurant.
The silence around the table stretched out for a while, or at least Lucas thought so, until Yann’s voice made its way to his ears and finally redirected his focus back on something else that wasn’t Eliott’s empty chair. It was only then that Lucas registered that everyone was talking all at once, yelling even, except for Yann who looked incredibly astonished. Right now he didn’t even care.
He didn’t care how Daphné had found out.
He didn’t care that Eliott apparently knew already.
He didn’t care about Yann’s hurt expression.
He just needed to stop thinking for a hot minute.
Lucas shook his head, and stood up after throwing his napkin on the table, then he stormed out of the terrace by the same door Eliott had disappeared through.

Aftermath of Vendredi 17h05
I have faith in my boy, Yann. He was an ass, but he is redeemable, and this is my take on that I guess
You can also read it on ao3
----
The reason Lucas waited this long to tell Yann about his sexuality wasn’t that he thought he would be dismissed or receive a bad reaction, but because telling him would make it real. He would have to admit to himself that he was gay. No one knowing that he was gay was simpler, because it made it easier for him to pretend he wasn’t.
“It’s not a girl” Lucas said, “does it shock you?” Nervous was an understatement. “But, it’s not me?” “No” Lucas could see how relieved Yann looked after he told him that he wasn’t in love with him, and how he tensed up again when he told him that he previously thought he was. Lucas proceeded to tell him about Eliott, and he looked interested to know, his eyes were soft as Lucas told him about his new love, he looked at him with sympathy and care.
“Then I told Mika and I fucked it up” and I didn’t realize at that moment that I had lost his sympathy. “Do other people know?” Lucas told him that other people suspected, that some people looked at him like they knew. “What do you think about it?” he looked at Yann and his heart dropped. He couldn’t look him in the eyes. Lucas could feel his eyes fill up. “Say something, please. You’re my best friend.” Lucas was desperate for Yann to look him in the eyes and tell him that it was cool. That he had nothing to worry about, that he would be there no matter what.
But that never happened.
“You know what? I can’t right now. I need time.” And then he left.
---
Lucas felt empty. He was done being angry. He was exhausted, he couldn’t find it in him to be angry when Yann told him he needed time, all he felt was emptiness.
As he walked through the door to his shared apartment he went straight for the door to his old room, knocking two times before opening the door. Manon sits in his old bed, eyes as sad as they were last night. She looks up as he leans against the doorframe, arms crossed and tears threatening to spill. She puts away the book that was in her hands and lifts her duvet as an invitation for him to join her. He does.
While being held by Manons small figure, his tears finally begin to fall, and he’s shaking, trying so hard to breath. She tightens her grip and whispers soothing words, trying to calm him down. It must have worked, cause after a while his sobbing had stopped, and his breathing was heavy.
---
“Please don’t wake him, he hasn’t slept for days” voices arguing on the other side of the door woke Lucas up, his head felt heavy as pushed himself off the bed. He reached for his phone who was perfectly positioned on the nightstand to check the time, but what caught his attention was the three missed calls from Yann. His heart jumped. He was about to call him back when he heard his voice responding to Manon. He stood up so fast he got dizzy. “Do you mind me staying till be wakes up? I really need to talk to him” Lucas would’ve been lying if he said that he wasn’t nervous to hear what Yann wanted to tell him, so the steps he took towards the door were so slow, it felt like forever. Slowly opening the door, the first thing he sees is Yann sitting in the sofa, his leg jumping up and down – he was stressed, maybe nervous.
“What’s going on?” He can see Manon in the corner of his eye, but he doesn’t take his eyes off Yann. Yann stands up. “Lucas!” He looks perplexed, then he gives Manon a look; she leaves. “I need to talk to you” his voice is soft, and Lucas relaxes. “So I hear.” Yann opens his mouth and closes it a couple times, trying to find the right words. “I screwed up.” Lucas lets out a laugh as he breaks the eye contact and crosses his arms over his chest. “I shouldn’t have left you like that, Lucas. You opened up to me and I just walked away, and for that I’m so sorry, man. I- I really don’t have a good enough excuse. It was petty of me, I-… I had ben worried about you for weeks and I told you that I’d be there for you if you wanted to talk, and then you finally wanted to confide in me, and I was relieved. And… then you say that you’d talked to other people about what’s going on, and I just… ugh it’s horrible, I’m so sorry man, you came out to me and I was suddenly mad that you had told others before me, which you absolutely have a right to! But I was just really stupid dude, I’m sorry-” Yann rambled on, “And then I realized that you might think that I ran off because I was mad about you being gay or something, and then I realized how selfish I was, because this isn’t about me, and I am glad that you did have someone to confide in, even though it wasn’t me.” Lucas couldn’t hide his relief. Yanns eyes were filled with tears now, he smiled- “You are my best friend Lucas, and I’m here for you, always.” Lucas walked into Yanns arms before he could see his tears fall down. They hugged for what felt like hours, but he truly felt like he could stay there for hours more.
Yann later broke the hug and laid a hand on each of Lucas’ shoulders, he looked into his eyes with a serious expression, as if his eyes weren’t drenched in tears,
“so… Eliott, eh? He’s kind of cute”
“Shut up.”

Skam France season 3, episode 5 reaction
The opening clip gave me flashbacks to this SNL Totino’s commercial, another classic of gay cinema, so I FULLY expect to see some hot pizza roll action later this season.
Episode 5
Clip 1 - Still no yellow curtains???
Dramatic music. Lucas and Eliott are passionately kissing. The camera swoops over parts of their bodies. Eliott is smiley, Lucas gets in a kiss to Eliott’s nose. The level of intimacy is very strong, that shot of their legs tangled together is nice. I think it’s great that they didn’t back down from the kissing and physical contact in this scene; it’s not that it needs to be very explicit, just respectful and on par to what they’d give for a het couple, and they filmed Lucas and Eliott about the same as they did Charles and Manon last season. Skam was so good in how it depicted intimacy between Isak and Even; I consider it one of the defining features of S3, setting it above other gay romances in media for its lack of skittishness and double standards, and it’s been a consistent concern of mine that the remakes will be a step back in that regard. This clip was definitely reassuring.
Eliott asks Lucas if he’s his first guy, and Lucas just snorts so Eliott takes that as a yes. Lucas asks the same question and Eliott replies with this Even-worthy eyebrow raise, so Lucas is like, oh, I see! They laugh. So I that wasn’t an actual answer, lol? But I took it as Eliott having some experience with dudes. Could be a variety of things from kissing a boy to hooking up with one to a full-fledged relationship with a guy. Or the Mikael incident, if they include that in S4. They’ve apparently changed a huge amount, but that’s actually one detail that doesn’t need to be changed the way the bus storyline has to be, for instance.
We get some whispery voiceover as Eliott asks Lucas what he thought of him when he saw him the first time in the common room. We cut to them lying shirtless, so this is later in the day, after things got more heated. The lighting is very warm and golden, it’s a very romantic staging. Like there might as well be white curtains billowing in the breeze. (The curtains are white, but not billowy.)
Eliott volunteers that the first time he saw Lucas wasn’t in the common room, but on his first day in the corridor. Basically he describes the trailer to Lucas. Lucas didn’t see him but he was all Eliott saw. So that revelation happened fast. Not a surprise to anyone who saw the trailer (or you know, saw OG Skam) but it cuts out some of the mystery for Lucas - like Isak was doubting Even’s interest through much of the season, especially in this episode and afterwards, and when Sonja said the relationship was fake. Isak was so taken aback by Even revealing it in the last episode in part because he (and the audience) had doubted it so often. But Lucas has this reassurance from Eliott right from the beginning. Lucas just has so much more to go off from Eliott at this point: Eliott is more upfront telling Lucas how great he is, Eliott has said he wants to break up with Lucille and have a relationship with someone else who’s not necessarily a girl, Eliott didn’t choose plans with Lucille over a day with Lucas, Eliott told Lucas he wanted the double date to be just the two of them. Even when Eliott disappeared for a few days, he followed it up by apologizing to Lucas and saying he was sick. And that’s nice for Lucas, that he’s not doubting himself as much, but I have to wonder how this will affect the story? Or their relationship trajectory? When Eliott cuts off their relationship, it will come out of nowhere even more than in Skam.
Lucas whispers about what Eliott would have done if he didn’t go to the common room, or Lucas came to the bus earlier or later, as they lay there in their underwear with Eliott on his back, in between lots of kissing. The camera keeps cutting back and forth between kissing and talking, different angles, lots of pans, etc.
Eliott saying that he imagines two paths when he has a choice to make, but it drives him mad when he doesn’t know the outcome of the one he doesn’t take. So Lucas brings up parallel universes. (Piano music starts playing at this point, which seems to happen at significant Lucas/Eliott turning points, like the first time Lucas saw Eliott, or when Lucas played piano for Eliott. Like in OG, this conversation might have a huge effect on Eliott and how he sees himself and their relationship.) When Lucas makes a choice, there are all these other Lucases making other choices, like he’s surfing in Bali or in he’s in a NYC skyscraper signing a deal. I don’t know if these are things Lucas actually would like to experience in his life, or of they’re just examples of things that are so far and distant from his present reality, fun fantasies.
Eliott asks if maybe New York businessman Lucas didn’t jump off the building because he burned out. Lucas says that’s awful, Eliott asks if he’s ever thought about it? That’s good foreshadowing, a good hint as to Eliott’s state of mind.
Eliott says he doesn’t believe in parallel universes, though he doesn’t explain why (like Even say it made him feel lonely). Lucas says there are Lucases and Eliotts in other universes who are together right now. Lucille calls and Eliott groans, then says Eliott #425 can go talk to her, heh. Lucas #1 is very happy with that decision. They lie on each other and it blurs as the clip ends, as they fall asleep.
This is one of those clips that I completely get why people would love it, it’s very apparent, and I don’t think it’s bad, not at all, but at the same time it’s just personally not my thing. I’m sorry! Again, I understand why this clip blew up. It’s just ... similar to how I feel about cupcakes. People love cupcakes. I love some cupcakes! But I don’t care for a lot of cupcakes, like the really fancy ones with tons of frosting, because most frosting is too sugary for me. Do I get why people like the cupcakes with mountains of frosting, though? Or why people prefer the frosting to the cake itself? Absolutely.
Most of my issue is with the editing. There had so many cuts and jumps and I don’t think it served the mood or purpose of this clip. Actually, I found it really distracting. I could never just relax into the moment because of how the camera was spinning and panning and cutting between different points in time, something that has been done in various scenes in Skam and the remakes, but not usually with weighty dialogue happening at the same time? I found it hard to focus on what they were saying.
On that note, I don’t think the way it was shot was the best way to demonstrate to their chemistry. I think they have quite good chemistry! But there was so much moving around and cutting between moments that it began to feel like a series of poses rather than two actors working off each other, if that makes sense.
It just felt a bit too much like this clip was a perfume ad, lol. It’s very heavy and sensual and romantic, and it’s beautiful, but it’s not what I prefer from the Skam universe. It takes away some of the rawness and vulnerability of this kid’s coming out story - something that they’re still integrating into the show by keeping many of Isak’s struggles in Lucas - and makes it more full throttle OTT mature romance. Like - this feels like a romance between adults, not teenagers, and I don’t mean because of the level of intimacy/shirtlessness, more like the level of confidence, the way it doesn’t feel like they’re figuring things out, but that this is familiar territory (and for Lucas at least, it is not). And well, another some of that is because the actors are adults, too.
There’s some more stuff I can say but again, it’s just not my style for this material. In other contexts I would eat up this hardcore French romanticism, lol.
Clip 2 - Guess Who(’s not staying for dinner)
Lucas wakes up alone at 14:34 on Saturday. It’s later that day, so what’s his excuse for missing Basile’s party? Eliott is not actually there to keep him occupied. Is he just going to lay in bed and smell Eliott’s pillow or something? I realize he’s distracted but isn’t he going to be receiving texts from the guys?
Eliott left him a note on the pillow. It’s a hedgehog in bed, but when you open the note it’s a raccoon and a hedgehog in bed together with a little heart. AWWWW. That’s so cute. It’s so cute I won’t make any interspecies erotica jokes. The note says “Eliott number 3546 is a lucky guy” and that Lucas is handsome when he’s sleeping. Lucas looks bummed, though. I mean, I would be if I went to bed sleeping beside someone who looked like that and I woke up alone.
Lucas goes into the kitchen where everyone else is. Manon has been up early cooking, because she slept on the couch and got woken up by the neighbors. Lucas is like, oh sorry, forgot I’m not in my room anymore. WHY ARE YOU APOLOGIZING, IT’S YOUR ROOM. SHE HAS NEVER LIVED IN IT. (Also, I don’t think she meant anything by it, but her mentioning that she woke up early hearing the noise from the couch comes across as oddly passive-aggressive.)
But Manon is OK with it, because Lucas needed his room more! Eliott seemed super cool! UMMMM this is kinda weird. I know Eskild said the same thing but the situation seemed less pointed, like Manon’s borderline suggesting I know you needed the bed more than I did, Lucas, because of all the gay sex you were having last night.
The roommates all met Eliott when he left and Lucas covers by saying he’s a good friend who got too drunk so Lucas offered him a place to sleep. Manon is all “OK!” in a way that is too casual to be truly casual, if you know what I mean. Lucas gets on the defensive and says what, we can’t bring friends over here now? Now Manon is all, “OK...” in a way that says calm down, dude.
Mika eyes Lucas as he leaves. I don’t think they’ve really built that relationship in a substantial way, but at least they added that brief glimpse to show that Mika has Lucas on his mind?
Clip 3 - Cake!
Lucas and Manon walk into school, Lucas carrying baked goods made by Manon. Manon gets a call from Charles and ignores it. There needs to be a substantial Lucas and Manon heart-to-heart at some point. They’ve set up too much between them - I feel like their dynamic is more developed than Lucas and Mika, or Lucas and Yann this season.
The girl squad + Lucas sit around and eat cake. Well, the girls eat cake, Lucas is sitting back in his seat with his arms crossed. I know you are thinking about Eliott, dude, but there’s this thing people do called “eating our feelings” that works ... not very well in the long-term, but provides short-lived distraction and satisfaction. I recommend it!
There’s a mattress in the common room now and Manon asks, “Don’t you stop napping after kindergarten?” and I like Manon fine but she must have put some crack in that cake. Lmao, what human being is going to be like NAPS??? AN ABSURD TRADITION MEANT FOR TODDLERS. Like when you’re a little kid, you don’t want to nap, you want to run around and keep being an asshole; it’s when you grow up and become miserable that you start to appreciate the art of shutting your eyes in the middle of the day. Anyway, Daphne said the headmaster gave the students the right to nap in the common room. You know, that is a legit quality use for the common room, tbh. Everyone would use the nap room.
The downside is, as Lucas accurately points out, people are going to bang on that mattress. Well, I guess they could like … require the door to the room to be open at all time or something. Or put up a giant sign saying THERE ARE SECURITY CAMERAS IN THIS ROOM AT ALL TIMES. They don’t need to install security cameras for real, just use the sign to dissuade people. (Who am I kidding, none of that will stop the students from banging on that mattress.) Daphne is incensed at the notion, but Imane’s like, hookup-land is what’s gonna bring people here. LMAO. Again, not wrong.
They talk about the ugly mural some more (God I still do not get why everyone treats that mural like it’s a nude painting of one of the orcs from Lord of the Rings, it’s just a somewhat outdated mural, my eyes would glaze right over it). Lucas says he’s waiting for Eliott about the mural and Manon does a little “mhm” so he hurriedly changes the subject (good subtle detail).
They discuss getting WiFi in the room and one of the nerd dudes who showed up to the first meeting, who has been sitting in the corner, starts talking about how they can get set up WiFi. The nerd dudes have the password. Everyone is happy! But nerd dude says he would like compensation. Daphne assumes they are talking about her breasts as she is showing ample cleavage. Nerd dude says no, they were talking about the cakes. LMAO. I like this guy. Manon hands over a cake, the other girls are sad at the loss of cake. Understandable, but it seems like a fair trade to me. Also, there are multiple cakes and baked goods on that table, just scarf it down before the nerds come back for more.
Manon signs off with, “Bye, bitches!” The others talk about how weird she’s being. Well, yeah, but I’m wondering how her Charles-related sadness translates into her saying, “Bye, bitches!” Trying to put on a super happy and lighthearted facade? Would go along with all the baking.
This scene is cute and all, and I assume there will be relevance to something in the plot later on but ... what does it have to do with Lucas’ story or his POV? Other than a brief look at his closed-off body language (which didn’t last long since he was very engaged in the conversation) and a brief mention of Eliott and the mural, something that has happened before? There just didn’t feel like a point to his story in this clip, whereas every scene in Skam S3 felt like it had a point to Isak’s POV and advanced his storyline, telling us something about his mental and emotional state. I know that the other seasons of Skam didn’t have such a narrow focus, but usually there was some tie-in to what the protagonist was feeling. IDK, is this to foreshadow him and Eliott fucking on the couch? More hinting at Manon being off her game and having Charles problems? My guess is that they felt like they needed a girl squad scene sometime this week. If they had unlimited time for these episodes, I wouldn’t care if they had clips like this, but they do have a time limit, and so I think it’s fair to question if they’re making the best use of it.
Daphne is by no means required to have a boyfriend, I still root for lesbian Daphne at the end of the day, but that nerd dude who asked for cake instead of cleavage is already a better option than Basile.
Clip 4 - Lucas out of the loop
Lucas waits for Eliott outside of class, but instead it’s his bro Raptor Alex who exits. Lucas asks if the guy in his class is there. You know, the guy. Clearly the only guy who matters in Alex’s class.
Alex says Eliott isn’t there much, he freaked out in class the other day and doesn’t go anymore. Oh no :( I wonder what he means by “freaked out” though, like hopefully people weren’t gossiping about whatever happened? It didn’t make its way to Lucas, in that case.
The boy squad comes around the corner. Lucas completely phones it in when he apologizes to Basile. Not that I care about hurting Basile’s feelings, as my opinion of him is well-documented, but Lucas does, and he’s not even trying to sound sorry. And the family excuse is lazy and not believable at all, like with Isak it was also predictable but he put a smidge of effort into it. Lucas says the excuse like he’s on auto-pilot. The boys just let the excuse roll by, uninterested.
Lucas asks what happened at the party and Arthur says Basile went into the bathroom with Daphne and he won’t tell them what happened. Basile say she stayed on her knees in front of him for a long time. Which I take to mean she was barfing and Basile was holding her hair back. Also her hair smelled good according to him. SIGH. I’m sure this is the start of Basile/Daphne or whatever, but you know, it would be easier for me to buy that Basile is really a good guy if he did not describe Daphne in such an objectifying way. If you’re a fucking gentleman, why are you making it sound like she sucked your dick? I know toxic masculinity, ~it’s realistic, blah blah. They could’ve had Yann and Arthur make the crude jokes and Basile get serious and tell them not to talk about Daphne that way, it would’ve been character development. (Actually, now I’m wondering if there will be a moment like that later in the season. I can’t support Basile/Daphne at all at this point, but I feel like if they want to make him worthy of her in the slightest, he’s going to have to renounce his sleazy, perverted shtick very clearly.)
Lucas looks back after the boys as they leave him behind, not interested in telling him more, barely caring about his absence. He’s just not part of the gang right now. IDK, I think they should’ve directed Axel to play this more remorsefully - not his fault, I feel like they rushed this scene for time reasons? For instance when he sees the boys and apologizes to Basile, there wasn’t time for anything to land, like he didn’t care much, not even that he was disappointed in himself for forgetting. Just this look from Lucas at the end signals what he might be feeling.
Also, very weird choice to put this clip on Tuesday and the one with the girls on Monday? It makes way more sense to switch the two, because basically Lucas must not have interacted with his friends at all yesterday. Even though we’ve seen he has a class with Arthur and we’ve gotten a clip of that class on a Monday (although I don’t know how French class schedules work).
Clip 5 - Argh
When I started to watch this clip, I noticed it was 2 minutes and 43 seconds long and was like … are you kidding me? If this is the scene, we’re going to just fly through it? What in the fresh hell?
For comparison, the OG clip was 4 minutes and 36 seconds. And it didn’t have the end credits as this scene does, and it didn’t have this opening part with Lucas and Imane (or Isak and Sana).
Without the credits, this clip goes to 2:22. Eliott and Lucas meet outside starting at :55. Meaning there was about a minute and a half for the conversation that defines that second half of the season. Yikes.
Lucas and Imane are in class, I think they’re taking a test. She helps him out when he forgets something. There’s a lot on his mind and he’s not doing the best he can, I guess. Anyway, thoughtful of Imane to help him cheat (if this is a test)?
He gets a text from Eliott - is this a test or not? It’s not terribly important but LMAO at this teacher who (correctly) notices two of her students passing drugs under the table before class, but fails to notice the same two talking during an exam and one of them whipping out his phone during a silent class period. Cheating must not be a main concern of hers. Eliott is waiting outside the room, grinning at him through the window. So we have students talking to each other, looking at their phones, and non-verbally communicating with other students through the window. Now I’m really surprised that the teacher noticed the weed.
Lucas gets up to meet Eliott outside. Lol, really, dude? He’s going to get a bad grade just because he can’t wait a few minutes. I mean, the desperation is funny, but Lucas is not the brightest here.
Although I laughed a lot when Imane said he wasn’t done and Lucas was like, “Minimalism, Imane. Minimalism.” That might be the best line he’s had on this show.
Imane seems concerned but I’m not sure if she suspects anything’s up with him or if she’s just like how did I get partnered with such a dumbass.
So this clip was ... not good. Bad. It was bad.
This is the kind of content I feared we would be getting from Skam France based on the first two seasons. Luckily it’s been better than this on average, I really do think the show has improved! But not here. It’s such an important scene that I’m disappointed this is the one they bungled. There are multiple things that are ill-advised or underwhelming about it.
I’m aware that I can be harsh/nitpicky/critical about these remakes, but I really don’t intend to come from a place of default negativity, or like, FUCK THIS SHOW FOR EXISTING. And I don’t want to crush people’s buzz if they enjoy something! The reason I get so nitpicky is because I feel like it helps me better understand film-making overall. If a clip just doesn’t feel right, then I want to try to parse out why it didn’t work for me.
For starters, choosing to place this extremely intimate, private, honest, confessional scene outside. And not in some isolated space, but where tons of people are. You can fucking see students walking around behind Eliott when he’s glancing in the window at Lucas. As Lucas exits the classroom, you can see a girl headed in the same direction as him. I mean … what?? They are not remotely alone? Not only does it ruin the atmosphere of the scene, it tanks the plausibility of it.
Because Eliott’s waiting for him outside, and holy shit, gives Lucas a kiss on the mouth. Dude! People will definitely see you. He knows that he’s Lucas’ first boy(friend) per their conversation in bed, so what is he doing? I guess it’s cute but also, not a great idea to out Lucas like that Lucas hasn’t been with a guy before, Lucas has been deliberating no-homo-ing their interactions in front of his friends, Lucas has been trying to play up his relationship with Chloe (for instance slinging that arm around her when Eliott came to talk last episode, not to mention, you know, dating her while flirting with Eliott) so it’s a completely reasonable and likely assumption that Lucas is closeted and doesn’t want people to know he likes guys. I don’t think Eliott is a bad person for doing this, but it seems weirdly insensitive of him. (Even tried to kiss Isak in public in episode 8, but it was while he was manic, and I don’t want to make that same assumption of Eliott here.)
Eliott wants Lucas to leave with him but Lucas says he can’t ditch classes. Eliott says he’s told Lucille. He’s really brimming with confidence here, like he just swoops in for the kiss, he brings up Lucille without hesitation, he seems completely sure of himself. Lucas looks a little uncomfortable, though. Eliott is like, doesn’t that make you happy? Lucas says it does, although he doesn’t look that happy.
Lucas: “I just don’t want you to be sad if it’s my fault.” No offense because this is a tiny thing but this is one of Skam France’s typical flaws from S1 and S2, which they have largely improved on in S3, but here it creeps up again: adapting something from OG without retaining the context that makes it effective.
That’s a line from Isak, and it made sense in context for him, because Even was looking and acting very, very vulnerable when he said that he had told Sonja about Isak. Nervous eyes, hesitant voice. Holding back on his normally demonstrative body language - Even is very tactile but you can tell he’s very restrained at the start of that conversation. He speaks slowly and is very focused on Isak’s reaction, because he really didn’t seem to be sure what Isak would say. It was when Isak said, “Cool,” that Even started to relax, his eyes start to light up, because Isak responded positively. And when Isak said, “I hope you’re not sad,” it was to fish out what Even was feeling, because he needed that confirmation of how Even felt. Isak wanted to know Even wasn’t sad as a way to determine that Even really truly wanted to be with Isak. It’s a nice, subtle bit of dialogue.
Which makes zero sense here because Eliott is radiating happiness. He kissed Lucas on the mouth as soon as Lucas came outside! He’s smiling, his eyes are shining! It’s not subtle! LMAO WHAT. I guess you can take this as Lucas being insecure, but it just feels so bizarre and dense for a character to project joy as strongly as Eliott does and to ask whether he’s sad. However, maybe we’ll assume that Lucas really is just fishing for confirmation. The thing is, Lucas also has little reason to think that breaking up with Lucille would make Eliott sad. Eliott hasn’t said anything about not being able to break up with Lucille; he has made it clear that he would like to move on and have a relationship with someone else, not necessarily a girl. (Compare to: Even talking about how he felt like he was growing apart from Sonja, but saying he could not dump her, as well as not hinting nearly so heavily that he wanted to get into an actual relationship with Isak.) Eliott didn’t choose Lucille over Lucas the other Saturday when Lucas wanted to hang out, he was just busy, not necessarily with Lucille. (Compare to: Even saying he had plans with Sonja, essentially choosing her over Isak that day.) Eliott straight up told Lucas that he hoped their double date was just the two of them, that was his plan. (Compare to: Even feeling basically the same way, but not telling Isak outright in words.)
And throughout the season, Lucas has been even bolder in some ways than Isak was. He’s done more to go up to Eliott and try to chase him, he’s stolen a class register to find him. On Saturday he felt very confident about making out with Eliott and taking their shirts off. So you could take this as Lucas being insecure, but it doesn’t make a ton of sense even with Eliott ghosting the past few days. I don’t think it matches with the characterization. I think it’s just lazy writing, sorry, especially since much of the other dialogue in this scene is copy+pasted from OG. Or maybe more vulnerability and uncertainty was meant to come through at the beginning of the scene, but the directing and acting didn’t match up with that intention. Whatever happened, this is just an example of why this scene wasn’t very well-adapted. (Also, if Lucas is so insecure he can’t notice that Eliott is smiling happily and kissing him, then how did he get so confident within like 30 seconds to move in for a kiss in public? Overcoming both his internalized homophobia and his doubts to that degree in that short of a time?)
I do want to acknowledge that in Julie’s original script, the scene played out more like the one here, with Even kissing Isak at the very start and having his happiness and desire for Isak more visible. But in Julie’s notes, she also acknowledged that it was a hard scene to figure out and that the changes from script to shooting benefited the scene. Ultimately, this line felt right and fitting to the tone of the OG scene as it was filmed, but here it felt off. I didn’t get why Lucas was asking except because it was in the original show.
We get Eliott asking if Lucas would tell his parents, and at this point I was flabbergasted that they really were going to rush this hugely important, amazing scene to this degree. No room for buildup or mood, just cranking out the dialogue as if it’s obligatory. We get this conversation similar to OG where Lucas explains his dad feels guilty for leaving so he’s not going to say anything, and his mom is crazy so he doesn’t care. There is one nice moment where Lucas tells Eliott not to worry and Eliott says he’s not worried, but immediately asks why Lucas doesn’t talk to her. So you know, he is worried. That was a good, subtle moment. Eliott has a clear sad reaction to Lucas saying he doesn’t need crazy people in his life, and IMO it’s pretty obvious to viewers (though not to Lucas) but I still think Maxence did a decent job here.
Lucas is pulls out the drawing made for him, but Eliott just says Lucas is going to be late for class, all his warmth gone. When Lucas goes in for a kiss, Eliott ruffles Lucas’ hair instead. LMAO. Well, it’s not really funny at all in context of Eliott’s feelings, but it’s also just such a clear shutdown that I can’t help but find it amusing. Lucas does not find it amusing, stands there in surprise and confusion, looking down at his drawing.
Also, Eliott ruffled Lucas’ hair in episode 2, at the end of their lovely evening together, with a lot of sexual tension between them, so this is an unpleasant reversal. That moment felt like a “hello, I’m looking forward to getting to know you.” This moment is a goodbye.
Anyway, this scene was a mess!
Was there a reason why they were outside? Did someone see them? Is there going to be gossip? Why did Eliott kiss Lucas outside when he knows Lucas is closeted? Why did Lucas go in for a kiss at the end (more on that in a minute)? If there is a bullying/rumors storyline as people suspect, that could just as efficiently be done with, for instance, having them meet in an empty classroom and someone walks in on them or spies on them, or secretly takes a picture of them looking close. Maybe they don’t even see the person in the clip themselves, or they hear a noise but by the time they turn around, the person is gone. That way it would be more believable that they would kiss when they think they’re in total privacy, but could also lead to a storyline where the rumors get out. Or, you know ... there were rumors in OG because of Emma, so just have that escalate with Chloe. She fucking yells that Lucas is gay at the end of the episode. There’s just no need for this scene to be outside, it defies logic, and it kills the mood of the clip. It destroys the feeling of Lucas and Eliott having a secret relationship, it ruins the intimacy of making their feelings so clear to each other and of Lucas’ confession about his mom. It’s a really big deal for Lucas to tell someone about his mom! Overall the setting should reflect the content of the scene and this was just strange. Lmao, they didn’t even seem to go very far, weren’t they talking right outside the classroom? Is Imane going to look up and be like, hmm, there’s Lucas and Eliott having a conversation through the window?
I saw people be happy that Lucas moved in for the kiss at the end, and I mean, I get it, that’s the ideal outcome, for Lucas to be out and proud and comfortable with himself. I’m not going to rag on people for being happy about that. But I don’t buy it. He’s startled Eliott kisses him at the beginning of the clip. Then 60 seconds later he’s moving in to initiate a kiss. In public. Like … what is that doing for Lucas’ character arc? Is the only reason he didn’t want to kiss at the beginning of the clip because he didn’t know what Eliott had been doing, and not because of his internalized homophobia? How did he become okay with kissing him outside where people could see in just a minute? It just seems terribly weak for his characterization, and unrealistic that someone who’s so deep in the closet that he goes around flinging homophobic slurs and romancing girls can undo part of that in such a short time. (Especially combined with the Pride clip the next day.)
On that note, Lucas did not ask Eliott where he had been the past few days, there was no acknowledgment of all that Eliott had been gone, so if that was a problem for Lucas, it got swept away. Not as big of an issue as others, but it seemed odd that it went unmentioned when Lucas spent time looking for Eliott and trying to talk to him.
Why was this scene so short? I know there are time restrictions for the episodes, but why in the world was the cake clip necessary over more time allotted to this incredibly important clip? Just because they’re required to include the girl squad? Does the entire squad have to be in every episode, and was there no better way to include them? For example, instead of this clip, what if we opened with the girls eating cake and talking about the common room, but Lucas gets a text from Eliott and excuses himself, then meets and talks with Eliott? If there was anything relevant about the cake clip for future episodes, start with the girls talking about that, then Lucas gets the text and leaves. Seems like a way better use of time.
I don’t mind Eliott being frostier with Lucas at the end, turning away from the kiss, but he does such a complete mood change in such a short time span that it feels a little ridiculous that Lucas didn’t notice. Eliott up until he asked about Lucas’ parents: smiling his ass off. Elliot when Lucas said that thing about his dad: still a tiny smile, receptive to what Lucas is saying. Eliott when Lucas goes in for a kiss: not having it. There is one thing that they talked about in between Eliott’s mood change (or two, I guess, with Lucas mentioning hedgehogs). The mystery element is made less, well, mysterious and more obvious for both viewers and Lucas. Even still gave Isak a goodbye kiss, a parting affection, meaning that it’d be harder for Isak to immediately trace the source of the breakup to that conversation; Eliott is done with Lucas right that fucking second. I get that Lucas isn’t the brightest, but I’m also like … he’s really not going to connect the dots even a little? Even if he doesn’t understand the whole scenario, doesn’t that stick out to him? (Even when Raptor Alex said something like Eliott freaked out the other day?)
Eliott asking about Lucas’ parents was such a jarring transition, and it’s because of pacing. Even just asks it of Isak, too, in a way that could be jarring, but because of the slower pace, the more vulnerable atmosphere, the acting, it doesn’t feel like a 180-degree scene change, it feels more like a natural direction for their conversation to take. The boys tentatively began the scene and were somewhat walking on eggshells toward each other; Even’s question therefore has a kind of fragility that’s in line with the atmosphere, he’s testing out whether Isak will be OK if they date. There’s a lack of vulnerability in this scene, at least up until that point: Eliott is perfectly fine and dandy, Lucas is apparently conflicted but it doesn’t really land. So the transition of topic just feels sudden rather than fitting the mood. It’s just a hugely weird execution.
Stuff I feel bad about saying but I’m going to say it in the interest of honesty: I think Axel has improved a huge amount from earlier seasons and has done good work in other scenes this season. But it felt like Lucas was bored during this scene. I got zero sense of say, wistfulness from him talking about his mom. He didn’t even seem that happy once Eliott told him things were off and they were bumping foreheads? It could have been a much more layered performance. Like … I just don’t feel happiness for Lucas once Eliott tells him it’s off with Lucille, because Lucas himself doesn’t seem to care. I think his parting look of confusion was good, but during the conversation itself, it was lacking. Is it just because Lucas is putting up a front and not trying to show how much he cares? Then how does that work with him trying to go in for a kiss at the end? Like with the previous clip with the boy squad, I blame this a lot on the clip being rushed and not having time to really sink into Lucas’ emotions. But it was just unfortunate because the material in this scene is so complex.
Another thing I feel bad about saying but have to admit: Their chemistry has been good so far, but in this scene, it felt off. Like when Eliott went in to bump foreheads? Super awkward. He’s beaming and Lucas is not into it. And you can say that’s because he’s still not sure what’s going on, sure, but there’s no sense of like … wanting to lean in to the touch but feeling conflicted, or the gesture calming him or convincing him, it’s like Eliott is on a completely different plane than Lucas, and that doesn’t really make sense before Lucas drops the bomb about his mom. You can’t avoid that this scene between Isak and Even made such an impact because the actors were so in sync with each other. That scene felt overwhelmingly intimate, like we were spying on them in a private moment (which it was). The lack of intimacy here in what’s essentially a soul-baring moment is disappointing.
Just. Not good.
Clip 6 - Pride
Lucas is lying on the couch, his new home. Mika plops down and talks about how awesome the couch is, especially if someone like Eliott sleeps over again. Again, it feels jarring because there is zero buildup to this conversation, Mika says it right away, no easing into the conversation (and again, I know that there are time restrictions with the episode, and I’m sympathetic but that doesn’t make it feel less weird - not to mention I have quibbles with how they’re allotting their time). However, Lucas is like “seriously?” and Mika does seem to reconsider, saying that he’s there if Lucas wants to talk and getting up to leave. It works in the sense that Mika’s not been portrayed as sensitive to Lucas as Eskild was to Isak, so I can buy him being inelegant with bringing it up, but still, feels more like a necessity of them having to cram in this scene rather than a conscious character choice.
Lucas does decide to tell Mika about Eliott, and Mika seems pleased. Lucas wants to keep it under wraps, though, saying he doesn’t want to scream that he’s with Eliott or walk hand in hand with him. Which feels off considering he was ready to kiss Eliott on the mouth in public yesterday, which would scream he was with Eliott to anyone watching - again, why I feel that moment was inconsistent. Mika compares it to when Lucas was with Sarah, and Lucas says it was fake with Sarah. I like this bit comparing the two relationships. Mika is chill and happy for Lucas. Despite their relationship not being depicted in the strongest way IMO, it’s a nice moment.
Lucas says this doesn’t mean he’s gay, it’s fine to be proud of being gay, but he’s not gay as in camp. When Mika asks what he means, Lucas says he’s not going to tell people how many dicks he sucked over the weekend, or dance to pop music, or post naked pics on Grindr (especially damning since we saw Mika do just that a few weeks ago). Mika of course connects it to himself. Lucas tries to backtrack but puts his foot in his mouth further, saying he’s never going to Gay Pride and throw dick-shaped glitter on people just because he liked a guy. Mika gets pissed and the scene happens much like the OG Pride clip, talking about how the guys Lucas is talking about are suffering for just trying to be themselves. Mika gets pissed and walks off.
I’m fine with Mika’s reaction being more focused on anger whereas Eskild seemed more hurt and betrayed. Eskild and Isak were closer so that made sense. Mika seems more distant from Lucas so it works that the focus is more on his anger, less than someone he considers part of the family is degrading him.
This scene is so important in all contexts, all cultures, that I am really glad it’s here. Of all the things I hope that the remakes do include, the Pride clip is one of them - even if it’s not the exact same speech or dialogue, then a similar sentiment or lesson is really needed.
That being said, I do think they could have done this scene better from a storytelling standpoint, just by building up Mika and Lucas’ relationship and by not rushing the conversation. There are some nuances in the OG that did not come across here - like I think part of the reason that Isak started running his mouth about not being gay was that he noted that Eskild didn’t seem surprised, and Eskild didn’t deny it, saying he met Isak at a gay bar, and Isak was feeling some insecurity over being so transparent. That’s just my interpretation, though. However, Lucas also has not been dealing with the issue of stereotypes and generalizations to this point? His “gay test” was over something else, he didn’t call out the dance teacher for being too gay, etc. so this is like the first time he’s brought up this topic. I know we had the issue of generalizations mentioned by Alex and Imane but Lucas barely seemed affected by that incident. They could have built that up more, or preferably, re-wrote this scene to be more about Lucas’ behavior in past episodes, like him throwing around homophobic slurs just to distance himself from being gay. Have Mika call him out on that (like instead of focusing on stereotypes, Lucas says, “I’m not a [slur] just because I like a guy” and that’s why Mika gets pissed).
Side note, but it occurs to me that I don’t think we’ve heard about Mika and Lucas’ backstory at all? Like how Mika came to let Lucas hide in the basement before Manon invited him to take her room. I hope we hear about it in a future episode, because even if their relationship isn’t as important, it’s still something of an unresolved plot issue how Lucas came to live in the cellar last season.
Also, not to make light of this, but kind of awkward now because Lucas is living on the couch and can’t hide out in his room from Mika after this conversation.
Lucas texts Eliott that he told his roommate. I wonder what he was expecting from Eliott - probably support? Happiness? Eliott wanted to know how Lucas’ parents would react, and Mika’s not a parent but he’s someone in Lucas’ life, who lives with him, so it would be important. Instead, Eliott texts back, “That’s cool, I’m happy for you” which is frankly rather cold and detached, especially considering he follows up with the spiel about needing more time and them going too fast. This makes Lucas angry and he smacks the cushions. I think this is a good reaction, different from Isak who seemed just in disbelief that Even could be calling it off after asking to be his boyfriend the previous day. It fits with Lucas being more hot-headed and feeling out of control. He texts the guys about their plans for tomorrow, then throws his phone aside and sits back. Again, more like he’s pissed rather than stunned.
Clip 7 - Really bad night
The other three boys are playing a video game (not FIFA!) and Lucas is sitting there dejected, staring at Eliott’s last text message. The sound goes from happy fun-time boy party to sad droning despair when we cut from the others to Lucas, like he’s so checked out he doesn’t hear his friends, or the game, or anything, he’s just so focused on that one awful text message.
Yann, bless him, notices Lucas is in a bad mood, and has him get up and go to the kitchen with him. Lmao but also OUCH at Lucas wearing a hoodie that says “romance” at the worst possible time.
Lucas is super snotty about Yann not being able to find one of the many beers in the fridge, but of course Yann just wants to talk about what’s clearly bothering Lucas and why he’s avoiding them. Lucas denies there’s a problem, but Yann wants to know whether they’re friends or pretending? Lucas keeps denying and says if there was a problem, he’d tell Yann, and he just wants to enjoy the night. Curious way of showing that, sitting there completely checked out from everyone else and snapping at them.
I’m so, so glad they had this scene, because I think they’ve done Yann a disservice this season. They’ve cut out some Jonas moments, such as Jonas calling out Isak for his comments on the dance teacher (the French boys didn’t call out Lucas to nearly the same degree, nor single out his bad mood of late) and the scene where Jonas talks to Isak at his locker in episode 4 was not there. Basically, other than the scene in episode 3, there haven’t been many clips to this point that indicate Yann has been watching Lucas and growing concerned like Jonas was for Isak. This part is a great addition and I’m happy they had a moment to build up this relationship.
Arthur and Basile run in and say they got a text about a party at Chloe’s tonight, Basile thinks it’s his night to hook up with Daphne. GOD WHY. SHE SAID NO TO YOU. WHY MUST THIS TORTURE PERSIST.
They want Lucas to get them into the party, Lucas says Chloe is mad at him, Arthur says she’s not and it’s all in his head. How would he even know? They haven’t even been talking to Lucas lately. They just want to go to the party. Yann seems to be realizing that the situation is not good, but Basile says Lucas can’t do that to him, Lucas missed his birthday
Lucas agrees to go with zero enthusiasm, Basile wants a high five but everyone ignores him, thank God. Yann seemed happy when Lucas agreed to go, so I guess he thought Lucas was trying to have a good time instead of moping all evening, but Lucas was so blatantly not into it and peer pressured into going that IDK how you can think Lucas is anything but miserable.
The boys show up to Chloe’s house and Basile is already screaming and being obnoxious with people staring at him, but there’s a guy at the door who shoves Basile back and won’t let them in. In Skam, that guy at the door seemed like a total tool, but this guy? This guy is my hero.
Daphne comes down the stairs and Basile yells at her to tell the guy to let them in. Maria sees him and is all, hey, you were the guy who held my hair at the last party! Daphne is like, oh, so you hold any girl’s hair? And she walks off. Oh, fuck you, Skam France. Of course they’re going with Basile and Daphne. Lol at them trying to pretend Basile is a totally new character and not French Magnus when we get this subplot.
Basile is dismayed. Arthur says jealousy is a good sign. GODDAMMIT. This pairing is fucked up, I don’t care if I sound like a humorless uptight meanie SJW. It’s full of sexist tropes. Basile does not take no for a fucking answer, he’s disgusted and bothered Daphne over and over again, but she’s going to fall for him because he held her hair back one time. We’re just going to reward creepy male behavior because the creep didn’t actually rape her, I guess.
Lucas sees Eliott inside the house and shoves his way inside past the bouncer dude. No convincing the guy like Isak did, just shoving, which goes with his larger temper and sourer attitude. He sees Eliott talking to Lucille. But before he can get any farther, Chloe comes up and says he has no right to be here. Lucas starts to apologize for last time, and Chloe says she’s not mad about that, she’s mad that Lucas used her and treated her like a fool when he’s gay.
She outright yells, “You’re gay, Lucas!” in the middle of a crowded room so I wouldn’t be surprised if someone heard. JFC, Chloe. She is understandably pissed considering the way Lucas has played with her, but it is not okay to out someone like that. She’s being extremely careless. He seems like he’s not even totally present or hearing what she’s saying, like he seems in disbelief that she’s saying what she is. It’s a good reaction, like he’s overwhelmed by everything, and numb that she’s calling him out on what he’s denied to himself and others.
I actually could not tell if Eliott and Lucille disappeared, or if Lucas noticed that they were gone before he left the house. The way it’s filmed makes it seem like he was so rattled by Chloe that he just decided to leave. Eliott was already with Lucille so Lucas didn’t seem about to confront him (compared to Even who was not with Sonja until right as she showed up and kissed him).
So Lucas walks out and shoves Yann out of the doorway. Then shoves Basile. Then Arthur drops a comment about Lucas having a family issue, which seems … out of character, kinda. Mahdi and Isak had more of an established friction than Arthur and Lucas, AND Arthur was very supportive when Lucas first told them about his mom in episode 3. Basile was the one throwing a fit that Lucas canceled the party with the girls. I’m pretty sure that’s why people were speculating(/hoping) that Basile would be the one to get punched, because it was Basile with the prior issue. (But honestly, I feel like Arthur hasn’t been given a ton of characterization in the gang, and his primary role has been to egg on Basile’s pursuit of various women. For all people say Mahdi is underdeveloped? We still knew more about him at this point than Arthur, actually. We had more of a sense of his role in the group, and it didn’t seem out of nowhere that Mahdi would say that thing about Isak’s family.)
Lucas shoves Arthur against the side of the house. Yann jumps in, Arthur manages to hit Lucas in the head, which is shitty but tbh, I can’t get too mad at him since Lucas came out shoving everyone for seemingly no reason. Obviously Lucas is going through tons of shit but the boys don’t know the context, only that he’s lashing out at all of them.
And as a final blow, as Lucas walks away from the house, he sees Eliott and Lucille kissing against the side of it. Eliott seems happy and initiating the kissing with Lucille, unlike Even who seemed to only respond and get into the kiss after Sonja initiated (and IMO, had a twinge of sadness in his reaction). So Eliott seems way more suddenly OK with Lucille and satisfied with choosing her. Which is kind of interesting because Even was the one giving more mixed signals to Isak, while Eliott seemed so much more sure he was done with Lucille and ready to move on with Lucas.
Meanwhile, Arthur is yelling about how he wants to slap Lucas and how he’s been acting like an asshole for several weeks. Would’ve been good if we got some clearer signs that Arthur was upset about it? Not super obvious, but IDK, more focus on Arthur’s reactions, or being more passive-aggressive. Obviously he could have been bottling up his resentment toward Lucas, but from a narrative perspective, it feels like there should have been more of an indication. (There is some passive-aggressiveness from him in the SM content but I didn’t feel like it really carried into the clips themselves.)
Lucas storms home alone, then starts punching a door and yelling before clutching his fist and sliding to the ground, crying. His fist is bleeding. Again, way more rage, and it seems like the full extent of all that’s happened sinks in only at the end.
Social Media/General Comments
Eliott posts a drawing of rain on his secret IG with the caption “not scared” on it. No prize for guessing what that’s about, but still, very sweet! Not just in a romantic way but a nice moment for himself, not being afraid to take his life in a new direction.
Also, Lucas posts that he’s listening to a song called “Over There, It’s Raining” which is touchingly sentimental, heh.
Chloe is PISSED and is mad about being stood up alone with a crying Lucille and says she’s not going to forget it this time, he’s taking her for a fool. Which is ominous as hell and makes it seem like her outing him is going to be more deliberate, tbh.
Basile’s party was a busy night.
The boys ask “Where’s Lucas?” on IG and document their booze/grocery shopping trip, noting from time to time that Lucas isn’t there. Dude, why isn’t Lucas there? Eliott left in the late afternoon. Anyway, Yann in particular seemed annoyed about it since he seemed to bring it up. Although they were ready to buy Lucas ice cream.
I mentioned this in the last reaction post, but I have ZERO idea why the girl squad showed up to Basile’s party when Basile has been actively creepy to Daphne and when the boy squad was just shitting on the girls a few days ago when ranking them on IG. Not just being gross and sexist in general, but shitting on Alex and Daphne and Manon in particular. I’m serious, why would you even bother with these dickheads?
Sure enough, Basile tries to get a kiss from Daphne in an IG story and she goes for Alexia instead. Why. Why. (Not her giving Alex a kiss, that’s great. Why must I watch this other nightmare of a pairing happen.)
Basile said his hot cousin was supposed to be there, but it looks like just the boy and girl squads showed up, lmao.
The absence of Lucas is so well-documented in the IG stories from this party that it goes from passive-aggressive to just plain aggressive.
NO, do NOT let Basile and Daphne leave together. Daphne is really really fucking drunk. They’ve been gone for like 30 minutes…. Daphne’s friends just let her wander off with Basile when she’s super drunk and has made it clear she doesn’t want him? JFC.
I did not worry that Basile was actually going to rape Daphne or something, because that would be way too extreme for this show in this season. I did worry that we would maybe get more “comic relief” sexual harassment that the SkamFr crew doesn’t seem to realize is harassment. Plus, in-universe we have had Basile touching girls while drunk, we’ve had him being creepy. So while my knowledge of genre/TV prevented me from thinking he’d assault her, there are completely valid reasons to be concerned for Daphne in this moment.
The Skam France must have seen people’s horrified reactions to the Basile and Daphne content, because they broke Lucas’ POV to have a text message between the two of them. Daphne says “thanks for your help last night, you’re not so dumb (don’t tell anyone I said that)” and Basile is like, you’re welcome, hope you’re feeling better! And like … I’m relieved that this was all it was between them, but I’m still pissed this is where they’re going with it. I hate that Basile “not being so dumb” after all is going to be his redemption or whatever. This dude has been gross enough that it’s a meager consolation. It’s as if I kicked you in the face and knocked you down and then helped you stand up. One nice deed doesn’t make up for everything else.
Not to make generalizations, but: I have lots of problems with Noorhelm/William, in terms of sexist tropes, but there’s something about that storyline and his character that feels specifically like a female fantasy. I can tell a woman wrote it. Taking the bare bones of that romance: handsome rich bad boy falls for strong independent girl and changes his womanizing ways? Classic romantic trope. At its core, it’s not so different from something like Twilight, the “dangerous” guy and the one girl who’s special enough to break through his walls. It’s something that is appealing to women (not all women, obviously, but it’s disingenuous to pretend this isn’t a popular romantic dynamic.) It is appealing to women because the love interest is someone desirable.
The Basile/Daphne thing, though? Male fantasy. I can tell men were behind the camera (even if those dudes are not straight). Because I don’t think women particularly enjoy this dynamic. A gross dude who pursues a girl despite her being uninterested? Not really a fantasy that women have, that their nasty classmate or co-worker will keep trying to romance them until they’re worn down. In fact, many women have to live through this so-called fantasy and know it’s not pleasant. Basile is not portrayed as romantically desirable, and that’s not a value judgment on his attractiveness or anything, just a fact about his characterization. What I feel is that we’re supposed to align our empathy with Basile more than Daphne: the poor unlucky awkward loser who has a good heart, really, he’s just not the most skilled with girls. And that’s why it seems like it’s a male fantasy. The unlucky-in-love guy is the one who will get the girl at the end of the day. It’s funny and relatable to the male writer/director/crew because, no offense, perhaps they don’t get the girl’s perspective. The societal pressure and media characterization is not the same with the genders reversed. Men are socialized not to take no for an answer, to think that they are entitled to women’s affection.
Anyway, I really don’t think they expected some of the backlash to Basile and to Basile/Daphne, they probably figured it would be funny, like Magnus/Vilde, ignoring that Magnus/Vilde did not have the same consent issues and harassment. So in S4 it’s likely we’ll get more wacky Basile/Daphne antics and TMI, since they don’t have time to take the viewer feedback into account before they film the season.
Lucas trying to get Eliott’s attention by sending him a picture of a baby hedgehog is really cute. He also embraces that hedgehog motif by posting a pic of one on IG. I find that really endearing, like he’s latching onto something Eliott said about it, he’s making it meaningful. It reminds me a lot of Even latching onto every single thing Isak did and making it a Thing between them.
Meanwhile, Eliott had a shit time - he didn’t reply to Lucas at all, it seems, although Even replied briefly to Isak after he left, even though he didn’t give clear answers to why he’d gone. Eliott is instead posting pics of My Own Private Idaho alluding to his rough situation, saying everything will be all right, and then showing his raccoon fursona behind a brick wall after Lucas tells him that crap about not wanting mentally ill people in his life. Which is way too sad than anything involving a cute cartoon raccoon has the right to be.
There’s an IG story of Mika and Manon book shopping, referring to their “common passion” and mentioning a gay author, which makes me think they went shopping for LGBT-related books in relation to what’s happening with Lucas. I mean I guess their common passion could just be books in general, but I like the idea of them trying to find ways to help Lucas.
Mika also makes an IG post after the Pride clip about respecting “queens” and LGBT elders for their sacrifices and all the shit they’ve had to go through. It’s a more structured way of what he was expressing to Lucas in the clip and would have made for a great speech, although I think it makes sense for him to be angrier in the heat of the moment, and then this is him gathering his thoughts afterward, when he has more time to think about what to say. Great post, though.
After the end of the episode, Eliott posts some sketches of his raccoon and Lucille the cat being all cuddly, which I think were deleted later because I can no longer see them? But I think they’re the same sketches he had done earlier in the season, pre-Lucas, so it’s like him going back to the status quo, same as before, by getting back with Lucille.
Yann posted a pic where Basile and Arthur are happy and Lucas is so blatantly miserable that it feels like a parody, why the fuck would Yann even post that if he’s concerned about Lucas’ well-being.
I’m not French so please feel free to clarify or correct me if I missed something.
If you got this far, thank you for reading!

mercredi 10:40 - phase de latence clip analysis
Since I had so many thoughts about mercredi 10:40, I decided to make this analysis of the clip. Buckle up mecs, its gonna be a long ride. I’m putting this under the cut because this ended up being way longer than I originally planned
Tumblr media
So we start in the biology classroom where it looks like the class is working on an assignment where you can’t talk to the other students. It might be a test though (if french people could rb this and explain it that would be very much appreciated.) Imane seems like someone who cares a lot about academic honesty, but she cares even more about being a loyal friend. That’s why I was shocked, but not entirely surprised when she whispered an answer to Lucas for his assignment.
“You forgot the latency phase”
“What?”
“The latency phase. When two chromosomes are forming”
Imane is someone who is reserved, but once she gets to know and trust someone, she will go above her personal beliefs. The same can go for when she defended Alexia during the Kiffance party when Chloé said a generalization about gay people. Homosexuality is against Imane’s religion, but that doesn’t stop her from defending Alexia. Imane is such a caring hufflepuff and anyone would be lucky to have a friend like her.
Lucas gets the texts from Eliott
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Lucas got the texts from Eliott, he seemed apprehensive, but he was still willing to turn his uncompleted assignment in to see him. Lucas was confused and probably hurt that Eliott didn’t text him since Saturday, but I truly believe that all it takes is for Lucas to see Eliott’s face for 2 seconds to stop being mad at him.
Eliott also brings out the spontaneous side in Lucas, whether it means leaving class early or ditching Chloé and Lucille on their “double date.” Eliott makes Lucas fearless. (I’ll come back to that later.)
“Minimalism, Imane. Minimalism.”
This quote makes me laugh every time. Lucas has a very witty personality that we see from time to time when he’s truly happy. Imane’s reaction to this made it even better.
Tumblr media
This smile!!!! I wish I could see Eliott smile like that forever!!!! Okay but seriously, Eliott was so happy at that moment before it all went to hell. He probably had a hard couple of days after he left Lucas’s apartment, but now that he seemed to be feeling better he couldn’t wait to see Lucas. There is so much hope and love in those eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This kiss was such a natural reaction for Eliott, but I don’t think he understood how monumental it would be to kiss Lucas at school. Lucas never told Eliott that he is closeted but after Eliott saw Lucas’s reaction, I’m sure he definitely knows now. This, my mecs, is the first part of this clip that hurts. And it gets worse.
“Doesn’t that make you happy?”
“Of course. I just don’t want you to be sad or feel like it’s my fault”
So much to unpack with these lines. “Doesn’t that make you happy?” Oh Eliott, of course it makes Lucas happy. Lucas’ reaction caused the doubt to start creeping in for a second, and I don’t blame him. I’m sure breaking up with Lucille was a terrifying moment for him. He lost his main safety net and jumped into this new and exciting relationship where there is still a chance of abandonment. Thankfully, Eliott’s doubt only lasted for a second when Lucas said “I don’t want you to be sad or to feel like it’s my fault.” Not only does Lucas want to be with him, but he cares so much about how Eliott feels. Lucas understood that Lucille was a big part of Eliott’s life, and he can’t help but feel guilty for breaking up their long term relationship.
“I'm not sad!”
Eliott is so happy here. Right away Lucas expressed genuine concern for Eliott’s feelings probably in a way Lucille never did. He also assured Eliott about how happy their relationship makes him. Lucas just wanted to be sure that Eliott feels the same way, especially after not hearing from him for days.
Tumblr media
This time it was Eliott’s turn to reassure Lucas. This forehead touch expressed more than words ever could in this situation. The true intimacy in this moment is so tangible. Not to mention the little nose rub thing Eliott always does with Lucas! They’re just so soft with each other I feel like my heart is going to melt.
Now for some more angst.
“My mother is crazy” “I don’t need crazy people in my life”
It physically pains my heart to type those words, let alone hear it being said from Lucas multiple times as a rewatch this clip. I’m sure once Lucas realizes that what he said was wrong he’ll spend his whole life proving to Eliott how wrong that statement is.
Tumblr media
This moment right here is the part where I start crying every time. Eliott is always so expressive through his eyes, and you can so clearly see the pain. His biggest fear about Lucas came true: he realized that Lucas won’t accept him for his mental illness. Of course this isn’t true, but after Lucas calls his mom with a mental illness crazy, there’s no reason for him to believe otherwise. Eliott decides at that moment to build a wall around himself, and that prompts him to make this insta post. The worst thing about this is that Lucas doesn’t know why Eliott starts to withdraw.
Tumblr media
Lucas becomes so brave around Eliott. Only two minutes before Lucas was scared to kiss Eliott in school, but in a matter of minutes, he was ready to kiss him without a second thought. Lucas was also so sure about telling his parents about Eliott. I’m so proud of him.
Tumblr media
Maybe that’s what makes Eliott’s rejection of the kiss even more painful. Lucas was so open around Eliott, so i’m sure Eliott walking away was a punch to the gut. The confusion Lucas must have felt was probably overwhelming.
What happens next?
Now Lucas has two choices: he can do what he has done before and shut down within himself, or he could open up to someone about this. I hope that he goes to Manon for help because she has always made it clear that he shouldn’t have to go through his struggles alone. It would also be nice for him to talk to Mika or Alexia, since they both seem to be very confident in their sexualities.
Please tell me if you would like me to write more clip analyses like these! I genuinely loved writing this even though I had to rewatch an incredibly painful clip over and over again.
I’m sure there’s so much I missed, so if you have any other thoughts on this clip please feel free to share!

My thoughts on Kingdom of Ash
Ok I just finished the book (and yes, I slept no more than 5 hours since Friday night, but hey, what are you gonna do?) so all my thoughts may still be a bit raw, but I need to talk about all of it!!!! All of this will be extremely random though.
Ok so first of all, thank you thank you thank you Sarah J Maas for giving us once again a very well crafted story that satisfied me so much, that allowed us closure for every storyline and character arc established in the books. I loved every second of it.
So, where to start?
Lysandra disguising as Aelin: Ever since the end of Empire of Storms, I knew it wouldn't work, and it was likely to fall apart at the first battle because of Aelin's power (and the lack of it in Lysandra), and I was hoping Maas wouldn't find a weird reason for it to hold when it was destined to fail. She didn't, and the disbelief and betrayal the soldiers felt was very realistic and very sad.
Speaking of Lysandra: her relationship with Aedion was... I have very mixed feelings about it. I'm very glad of how it developed (honestly I never saw much development between them before so that felt good). Aedion was... such an ass. Like, I get he's pissed and all, but come on, you don't throw someone naked in the snow because they lied at you, that was such a dick move. But this allowed for a development I loved, the dynamic between them throughout the book: Aedion being an ass even though Lysandra tries to explain, then he realizing how wrong he was and going to her, and then her being all "are you kidding?" And refusing him because he was such a dick. I loved it, Lysandra held on to her pride and didn't crawl back to him the second he wanted her to. Instead they rebuilt a mutual trust together. So in the end I managed to be happy about their love, and I know I wouldn't have been if she'd accepted his first apology, because he wasn’t worthy of her affection at that point.
Aelin in the coffin: ugh every second of this broke my heart, it was awful all along.... the idea of her suffering so much that they had to rebuild her body was... oh everything was horrible. The worst, I think, was when Maeve told her Rowan had been spotted in Terrasen, and Aelin admitted to herself that she'd hoped he would come for her. I literally was talking to my book going "noooo he's coming, don't lose hope!" It was so painful. But the way they freed her was amazing, the fact that their plan allowed her to free herself at first and then they helped her, all this was the best way it could’ve happened. Also, the scene where she yelled to take off the mask and the chains was... again heartbreaking but necessary I think.
Her relationship with Fenrys was EVERYTHING. The fact that they supported each other for all this time, the bond it built between them through their trauma, I loved it all. The scene in the cave when they say they'll be here to listen if the other needs to talk about it, it was great. Also, I loved the fact that it helped them in the end, with her helping Fenrys against Maeve. Amazing, all of it. And Rown wasn’t jealous or anything (maybe a bit hurt at first because he thought Aelin might not want him again, but then it got resolved quickly enough to not ruin anything).
Rowaelin. Oh these two gave me ALL THE FEELS. At first when Rowan is low-key afraid that Maeve broke their relationship, but then Aelin gives him the wedding bands 😍. And then their entire conversation about Lyria and the mating bond was perfectly crafted. But oh my god did my heart break when Aelin was on the verge of dying and Rowan felt the mating bond slowly disappear... awful. I loved it haha. Rowaelin always made me feel a lot, and this book was no different.
I have too many thoughts honestly, I might forget a lot xD
Aelin losing her scars and then later her human body was so sad.... Rowan describes her as haunted and it's heartbreaking.
I can't remember in which chapter it was, but can we agree that we had a scene where Fenrys describes being raped by Maeve whilst his brother’s blood was still on the ground? It wasn't that explicit, and I can't remember when exactly it was, but it was awful and made me cry.
Oh and I don't understand how Dorian's shape-shifting power works? Like, Lysandra always swaps back naked, but he somehow manages to keep his clothes and his sword and all? I don't get it. Maybe I missed some kind of information?
The wave of power in Anielle: I loved the whole scene, Aelin's power was amazing (I saw it coming from far away but it was still good. I'm generally surprised by Maas' twists but this one I knew was going to happen ^^)
Oh Anielle makes me think of my lovable married couple chaorene: the pregnancy thing was... very cliche, but I didn't mind it. I want them to be happy and hey, if they're happy with getting married and having a kid this fast, I'm fine with it. I'm a sucker for fluff anyway so I loved it even if it was cliche 😂 I was low-key terrified that they would survived but she would lose the child somehow... thank God that didn't happen!
Another thing I'm once again very happy with one of Maas’ books: she is not shy around the idea of her characters having healthy, enjoyable, sexual relationships. In this book, I loved the way she described Manon and Dorian in particular. Throughout the whole first part, they sleep together just because they want to, they're not in love, they're not involved in any other manner, but they enjoy each other and they both want it, so yeah, they have sex and nobody blames them or demands they be more "serious." It's great.
Dorian deceiving Maeve so easily was soooo satisfying XD
The King of Adarlan being able to replace his son because he'd been cursed to forgot his name was a bit... far-fetched? But it allowed to save Dorian's life so I'm not complaining ^^
Aelin trying to exchange Elena against Erawan annoyed me. I know we're probably supposed to consider it this grand noble gesture but... Come on, Elena died literally a thousand years ago, and destroying Erawan has the potential to destroy his whole army (and as we see in the end, it does), so no, saving Elena's soul was not a good idea from Aelin's part. And we don't know if the Gods wouldn't have betrayed her anyway and not upheld their end of the bargain even if she hadn’t asked for it, but I totally get why the khagan royals are mad at her. It was a reckless move and she's very lucky it ended well after this particularly bad decision.
Completely change of subject, but.... Nox was back!!!! I'm so glad we got to see him again even if it was a small role!! Great callback to the first book!
Speaking of cameos..... Feysand!!! I loooooved it  XD Mainly because I’m in love with every little mention of Feysand because they’re perfect  😍 But also because it definitely disproves any possibility of their story happening in the same world but at different times. I never very much liked these theories personally. But the idea of them in different worlds connected was so good. Plus, it gave me this new headcanon that maybe this happened during Starfall in the Night Court, and that the spirits might be indeed travelling like Aelin was in that case. There’s no evidenceof this but I love the idea (and it would strenghten the reaon why Amren prefers to stay alone during Starfall...), so I’m keeping it ^^
Manon once again was amazing. Her character proves once more that she's not perfect, she's willing to sacrifice some witches to gain their trust, but she still grew into a better person in the end and she does manage to reunite the clans. She learns to feel even more than in the previous books and I love it. Her letting Dorian hold her and telling him that she misses the Thirteen was a perfect moment of sadness.
I kind of knew some of the Thirteen would die but.... all of them?!?! I cried during the whole thing.... All of them looking at one another, Asterin smiling and saying goodbye, the collective yelding while Manon shouts for them from the city, and then the whole homage... all of this was so emotional....
I was also very sad when Gavriel died.... less emotional in a way because we know he died proud of his son and happy that Aedion accepted him, but ugh still so horrible when you understand he's sacrificing himself.... right in the feels :(
On a happier note, this book was so full of love, it was like an giant balm to my heart. Chaorene are the sweetest; Rowaelin are the most intense and perfect couple; Lysaedion were just the right amount of angst I need, with Lysandra being a badass; Nestaq was awesome through and through. I'm glad Manorian didn't exactly go canon in the end, the future is open for the both of them and I love it. Elorcan... I never cared much about their relationship so I would have been fine if it had been only left as a possibility, but hey, I'm still glad they found each other in the end.
Yrene is such a great character. She's soft, she loves her husband very much and needs him when she's afraid, she's very happy to be having a baby and to build a home for her family. And yet she's an amazing healer, she's not easily afraid, she's strong and willing to risk her life for the greater good. And those characteristics are not in contradiction to one another, they fit perfectly well. I love her, I think she might be my new favorite character.
Chaol telling her "Go save the world, Yrene" gave me life. Before the release of the book, I saw a lot of posts criticizing Chaol, people being sure he would ressent her for taking away his ability to walk when she worked, and not wanting her to risk her life. Those posts annoyed me a lot because Chaol is (was haha now it's his wife) my favorite character, and though he deserves a lot of criticism, I feel like a lot of people hate on him for no good reason, and will take the opportunity to hate on his character even if it forces them to criticize things completely out of character for him. And him resenting his wife or prohibiting her to do anything would have been so out of character. Anyway, I'm glad Maas included this awesome line for them!!!
Also, the two Valg royals being killed by the powers of the healers was amazing. But I was glad Fenrys got the first blow at Maeve. God knows he deserves it.
Ok I'm going to stop here I think. I'm sure I forgot a looooot more but I can't remember everything ^^
EDIT because I already have more to say xD
Dorian mourning Sorcha was so on point, it felt strange to me that he seemed to not think about her in EoS but his grief in this book was very well written.
And also
The scene at the end with only Dorian, Chaol and Aelin. THAT was perfect.
Overall, I'm very, very happy with this book. The happy ending was just amazing, it made me so happy myself (and honestly that's all I'm looking for in a book, to all the characters to get their HEA after all their sufferings). Some small points gave me mixed feelings but honestly, the rest was so satisfying that I don't even mind.
I loved it.
Don't hesitate to tell me what you thought, I want to talk about this book so much!!!! I would love to hear what you all thought so if you want to write to me about it (by ask or by message) I will be thrilled!!!!
If you want to read my other thoughts on stuff

You know the more I think about it and re read EoS the more I'm pretty sure SJM intended for people to dislike Aelin. The way she treats Manon plus Dorian, Aedion, Darrow, Ren and Lorcan all react very negatively to her and begin to turn on her or criticise her. Even Elide is wary of her at first. I just can't really figure out why if SJM intended us to be connected enough to her to be sad about that ending
Well, there’s a difference between the characters not reacting well to her, versus us not reacting well to her.
Darrow thinks that she was flitting around Rifthold wearing pretty dresses and being selfish
Lorcan thinks of her as a mark who just won’t die, and she’s the reason Elide is pissed at him
Aedion is being butthurt over not getting the blood oath (though more than one person can?) and then mad at her making plans without him
Manon and Aelin don’t have any personal bad blood, but they are two aggressive women who saw each other as threats and proceeded accordingly. More below on that.
I don’t remember her doing anything note-worthy to Dorian? I gotta get on with my reread.
All of those might be really valid reasons for the characters to be upset with her, but we, the readers, know that Aelin was being abused by Arobynn, forced to kill, dealing with Sam’s death, then Nehemia’s, killing Archer. All while hiding from (IE not dealing with) her past, including the death of her parents. She is coming to terms with the idea that she is so close to having everything she has wanted, but thinks she never will. So as readers, we get to know a lot more about Aelin than the other characters do. The above characters have very personal reasons for not liking her that have to do with their histories. And this is why third person is so much better for this story with such a big cast of characters.
There can be some blurry lines if, for example, a character we like feels a certain way about another character. We might be sympathetic and root for our favorite (like when Aelin and Lysandra weren’t getting along). Then as that character learns more, we do, and we can start to see why maybe that impression was wrong. I think a lot of people who stopped reading ToG felt more sympathetic towards Chaol than Aelin, and that’s one of the reasons they have a hard time with her. They are Team Chaol, so as long as he is mad at Aelin, they are mad at Aelin.
I still gotta do my reread, but Manon and Aelin are super similar characters, so the way they react to one another is totally understandable. They don’t trust easily, they will ride or die for their loved ones, they saw each other as a threat. It makes sense. I think the fact that they come to an understanding later, like Aelin and Lysandra do, is a good example of people making snap judgements, and then realizing they were wrong. If they decide to forgive one another for whatever they have done, that’s up to them.
I think… sometimes on this site, people’s ability and willingness to forgive is really, really low. Startlingly low, considering that it means people are basically not allowed to fuck up. And that’s cool, everyone has their own bar to set, but if we are constantly taking a moment from someone’s life, judging that, and then making that decision binding, then… no one will ever meet that bar. No one will ever be good enough. And then we aren’t open to potential growth. The reason I bring this up is because a lot has been made of the way Aelin treats Manon. Aelin wasn’t exactly kind to Lysandra or Kaltain, but she figured her shit out and got better. Same thing happened here. That relationship is just a lot newer, so we haven’t had a chance to see them… be friends. Which hi, they totally can be.
And with the end of EoS, I think even if you don’t like Aelin, you can feel bad for her. You don’t have to like a character to understand them. I dunno, this whole idea of liking characters is super personal and I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, just generally speaking. It would be pretty hard for me to see what happened to Aelin happen to any of the characters, and for me to not care. And that counts even for Lorcan and Aedion, who I don’t really like. Like I might think Tamlin is a douche with the emotional intelligence of a potato, but I still didn’t want to see him suffering like that in acofas. But again, liking a character or connecting to them (or not) is a personal thing. It’s a lot easier to argue about how characters relate to each other, rather than how we do.
Thanks for this ask, nonnie, I’m getting ready for my reread and so it reminds me of stuff to pay attention to!

Preferences: First Meeting/Mate Bond
I got part of this idea from @stherix for when the mating bond snaps, thank you darling. First meeting is for the non-Fae in this preference, which was requested by @fiery-feyre @embracethenight138 and some nonnies
THANK YOU @highladyyfeyre @my-boyo-fenrys and @autumn03 for being my beta team on this, you guys helped so much because I honestly didn’t think this was any good so thank you!
Preference Tag List: @runesandfaes @autumn03 @fiery-feyre @januarystears @caitlyn-blackwell @starzablaze @writergash @illyriangoddess @wyrdtoyourmother (let me know if you want to be added to this tag list!)
Rowan:
It snaps right away for him. He smells your intoxicating scent and he meets your eyes and just. Boom. Somehow, in a split second, he is across the room in front of you, his pine green eyes boring into your own with fierce intensity and he purrs, ‘Hello, mate,’ with just the stupidest half smile on his face that you fall in love with immediately. He offers you his hand and bends down low, without taking his eyes off you, to place a kiss on your knuckle. It is a reverent and completely loving touch that sends shivers down your spine and then it clicks for you as well. Rowan’s smile widens because he sees realization dawn in your eyes as he straightens. You take in his tall, strong frame, corded muscles, long white hair, and you murmur, ‘well hello to you too’.
Rhysand:
It seems like all the air is taken from his lungs when it first snaps. His heart is pounding rapidly in his chest and Rhys feels as if it might explode. His usual smug expression disappears until unrelenting determination and love shine through. He doesn’t even believe - can’t believe - that the Cauldron would grace him with such an exquisite creature as a mate. ‘Mine’ he whispers, more to himself than anyone else. You’re across the room so you don’t hear him and Rhys is pretty sure that you don’t know yet, so he decides to not tell you for a little while. However, that doesn’t stop him from murmuring quietly practically every time he sees you - a smile playing on his face - ‘mine.’
Aelin:
She is completely and utterly shocked when the mate bond snaps. Being half-Fae, she was never completely sure that she would get a mate, much less you, her best friend since she was a child. She frets for days about how to tell you, and ends up showing up at your bedroom door one night, in nothing but an extremely scandalous nightgown. You sputter a few times at the sight, trying not to stare at her though you desperately want to. Aelin mutters, ‘Huh, I thought my mate would be happy to see me with so few clothes’. Your eyes widen because you can’t believe that you might have just actually heard her say that. She has a sly smirk on her face as you take a second to process. Finally, you drag your eyes back to her frame and take your time raking them up and down her scantily clad body. ‘Well if by mate, you mean me, then you would be correct’, Aelin’s smile grows and she pushes her way passed you and onto the bed. Slightly opened mouth but not reluctant in the least, you follow her right away.
Dorian:
You first catch Dorian’s eye from across the ballroom. He is so infatuated with your lithe figure as you dance, your bright smile that stretches across your face, and the clever eyes that gleam in the light of the chandeliers, he completely disregards the woman he is talking to and marches straight over to you. Always the charming prince, he bows to your partner and then takes his place, his hand fitting comfortably on your hip. You are shocked that the prince has decided to dance with you, and blush when you notice how intently he searches your face. Dorian finds that he absolutely loves your blush. He dances with you for the entire night, thoroughly confounding your senses. The two of you talk and laugh well past midnight, and Dorian discovers that from that moment on, he really has no desire to dance with anyone else.
Cassian:
He just. Stares. The bond snaps and suddenly there is no where else that Cassian is able to look. He is frozen to his spot and his gaze is glued to you, trying to memorize every part of you down to your soul. You feel his stare on the side of your face and when you meet his eyes, you can’t help but blush. ‘So, I’m guessing you know?’ You ask, walking up to him nervously. He nods, silent. ‘You’re not... mad, are you?’ That shakes him from his daze. He grabs you to him and wraps his wings securely around you, his lips descending to your own instantly. Loving pecks spread across your face and between each one, he speaks. ‘I’ kiss ‘have never’ kiss ‘ever’ kiss ‘been happier’ kiss ‘in my’ kiss ‘entire’ kiss ‘life’. You giggle and relax against him after weeks of worrying over his reaction. Cassian rests his chin on top of your head and closes his eyes. He breathes in your scent and sighs happily. ‘My mate.’
Chaol:
When he first sees you, he is skeptical. He never does really trust beautiful women, especially ones that flit around the castle in big dresses. You’re new, he notices quickly, and briefly wonders why he didn’t know you were coming. But the second time he sees you, and the first time he actually talks to you, its  on the running track at 6am. No longer in your finery, he is unable to take his eyes off of your form as you somehow are able to pass him. He catches up with a little more effort and as soon as you smile at him, Chaol is a goner. The two of you go on morning runs together for weeks, and the Captain soon finds himself entering court gatherings even when he’s not needed just to talk to you more when neither of you are sweating and out of breath. So sure, you’re a beautiful woman of the court, but he quickly learns that you are much, much more.
Azriel:
The two of you feel it snap at the exact same time. You’ve known each other forever and have been tiptoeing around the other for years, but now that he knows, Azriel is quick to take action. His arms encircle your waist in a second, his face buried in the crook of your neck, breathing you in and pulling you tighter and tighter to him with each passing second. You respond immediately, though you are still shocked, your hands scraping through his hair as you pull him closer as well. ‘I-I always hoped that maybe -’ he murmurs against your skin, his voice hoarse. ‘I know, me too, but I never even thought to dream that -’ you cut off, unable to express your emotion accurately. His hands squeezing your waist slightly is his wordless response, letting you know he understands. The two of you sink to the floor slowly, holding, caressing, admiring each other, murmuring words of adoration and disbelief. Azriel simply cannot stop smiling.
Manon:
Meeting Manon for the first time is always the most important interaction with the witch. First impressions are very important to her. Luckily, she doesn’t find you annoying, weird, or insufferable so you’re already on the right track. Once, you even manage to get her to smile! Abraxos also takes a quick liking to you, which helps a lot where the witch is concerned. She can tell you’re nervous and likes that she has that affect on you. When she’s about to leave, you quickly call her back because you just can’t help yourself, ‘do you think I’ll ever see you again?’ She smirks and you feel a thrill go through you at the gesture. ‘I definitely would not mind crossing your path again, human.’
Lorcan:
He tries really hard not to react when he feels that string pull taught between the two of you. He really does try. It doesn’t work very well though. First of all, he’s surprised because he didn’t think you were possible, and then he’s mad because you are so perfect and would never accept such a monster as him. He almost walks away right there, telling himself that he will leave you to your life without being tied to a murderer. But you call him back and Lorcan cannot believe his ears. Hope blooms across his face and from then on, he is putty in your palms. The sound of your name on his lips make the decision for him; he will work for the rest of his life to be worthy of being your mate.
Lucien:
‘Cauldron’ he murmurs. It happens while the two of you are in bed together. Lucien has absolutely no filter and suddenly he is just telling you. ‘You’re my mate.’ You have just come down from a huge climax and you’re kind of smug as you say, ‘oh that’s why that felt so good’. Lucien roars with laughter, burying his face in your hair and breathing you in. Your hands rake down his hair lovingly. ‘I love you.’ he says, and you can’t help but smile. ‘Two declarations in one night.’ and then, ‘I love you too’.
Aedion:
You meet Aedion for the first time because of mutual friends. Ever the smooth bastard, he is charming and funny and charismatic. It doesn’t take long until you are head over heels, and Aedion soon follows. Many drinks and lots of flirting later, you’re truly not sure how you are going to go home tonight without him. Turns out you can’t. ‘Invite me in?’ He asks after he drops you off that night. You smile and pull him through the door. The two of you don’t end up tumbling in the sheets that night though. Instead, you stay up all night talking about anything and everything. Years later, Aedion likes to joke that he went home with you the night he met you, and he’ll look at you fondly as he says it and wink, because it makes a good story, but you both know the truth.
Mor:
She’s already hopelessly in love with you when the bond finally clicks. In fact, the two of you are getting married when you both feel it. She’s about to finish her vows when her eyes widen and you see the wheels turning in her mind. Mor completely disregards the planned words and starts to speak. ‘I am the Morrigan and my gift is Truth. Thus, when I say I will love you forever, you must believe me. Forever and always, my mate.’ Tears come to your eyes because she felt it too and neither of you hear the gasps through the crowd as she brings you in for the first kiss of the rest of your lives.
Helion:
He realizes it the first time he sees you, and tries his usual flirting techniques, attempting to get you to notice him. Of course, you’re stubborn and refuse to be swayed by a classic womanizer like him, so Helion begins to devote every waking second to getting you to like him. He brings you flowers, bakes your favorite desserts (he is an excellent baker), flatters you constantly, is always trying to ask you to dinner - dinner, not bed - and somehow finds a way to make you blush at all times. Finally, after weeks of him struggling, you agree and Helion rejoices quite publicly. At the end of an extravagant night, you allow him to kiss you and he thinks that he might just die from happiness. It takes many more dates before you allow him to take you to bed though.
Gavriel:
Time slows down when he finally feels the bond. You’re walking away from him, and he is being pulled in the opposite direction, and then suddenly he rips his arm out of his captor’s hold and rushes to you. Gavriel grabs your hand and you meet his eyes. Understanding floods through you as he pulls you far away from those that wish to separate you. He refuses to let you go once you are in private. He memorizes everything about you down to the minute detail. ‘I promise,’ he says, ‘I promise that no matter what happens, I will never leave you’. Because he’s made that mistake once, and he will not do it to his mate. Never.
Kallias:
You’ve served in his court for years, always knowing him as the icy, stoic High Lord of Winter. However, when you unthinkingly serve him some food one day, the bond snaps and Kallias turns into the fluffiest male ever. It takes a little while for both of you to get used to each other and the bond but soon the becomes loving and affectionate. There are smiles that are reserved just for you and little crinkles in the corners of his eyes when he is super happy. He loves to wrap you both up in a blanket and proceed to kiss you senseless. Any prior iciness completely melts when you are around, and you love that you have that affect on him.
Fenrys:
The two of you have been friends for years, and when he realizes that you are his mate, he just blurts it out. ‘You’re my mate.’ Fenrys notices that you don’t look very surprised, and quickly figures out that you already knew. ‘Gods, why didn’t you tell me?’ he asks, scooping you up in his arms and twirling you around. His forehead rests on your own, his large hands cupping your cheeks as he stares into your eyes. ‘You’re my mate’ he murmurs again, like he can’t even believe it. ‘You’re my mate’ Fenrys repeats, loving the smile that lights up your face when he says it. A small peck quickly leads to a passionate kiss which progresses into him picking you up and carrying you to bed. ‘You’re my mate’ shortens to him whispering ‘mate’ all across your body over and over again as he worships you throughout the night.
Tarquin:
About a week after meeting you, it all clicks, and Tarquin’s efforts to woo you double in intensity. Innocent friendly touches become much more meaningful and much less innocent now that he knows. His smiles never fail to knock the air out of your lungs, even though you don’t know why. He takes extra care at pushing a strand behind your hair and before you know it, he’s kissing you, because Tarquin literally cannot help himself. Needless to say, you’re surprised, but not against the feeling of his lips on yours. When he finally pulls away, his eyes still closed, he whispers, ‘that was better than I ever imagined it would be’. And the smile that grows on your face is so big that it hurts. ‘You’ve imagined that?’ Tarquin just nods, still drunk on happiness. ‘Ever since I found out you were my mate.’ You sputter a few times and the High Lord seems to realize what he said. Always the cool guy, he just shrugs and silences your questions with another sweet kiss.
Tamlin:
He never finds his mate because no one deserves that kind of fate.

Some kind of mistake (cha. 6/6)
Ever since Eliott first came across the new resident of the apartment 320, he made peace with the fact that Lucas ‘Big Blue Eyes’ Lallemant would, one way or another, turn his life upside down. Thing is, he hadn’t expected that Lucas’ wife and Lucas’ daughter would play a part in it. Because, you know, he didn’t know they existed until it was too late. (ao3 link)
Siham
If you wanna drop by to chat, my shift’s over
Siham
You’re still coming right?
Siham
Eli?
Siham
Okay I trust you not to put yourself in danger one way or another
Maybe just text me when you’re free and we’ll plan another night
You
I’m so sorry I didn’t see your texts
You
I’ve been er kinda busy
Maybe another day? ❤️
“So, do you, like, send heart emojis to random people?”
Eliott glanced up from his phone, to where Lucas was sitting next to him on the couch, busy trying to nail the casual pause. He was all clad into the sweatpants he had fetched from his flat and the hoodie Eliott had lent him, once they got to his place and that Lucas decreed he was cold in his tee-shirt. They hadn’t talked much since they had left the bus stop together; the most they had done was walking close enough from each other so that their arms brushed every now and then.
“Seriously, you’re jealous?” he deadpanned.
Lucas huffed and brought his legs to his chest. “Coming from you, that’s fairly comical.”
“I swear to God if you start laughing at me for not thinking that a guy living with a girl and taking care of a baby screams ‘not the baby’s dad’, I might actually kill you,” Eliott glared, setting his phone screen down onto the coffee table.
“Seriously, you never registered all those times I was hitting on you?” Lucas cocked an eyebrow as he rested his arm onto the backrest.
Eliott snorted. “I did. I just didn’t know what was your deal. It’s not the first time I’d be falling for a straight guy. You learn to deal with it,” he gestured vaguely, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Oh, sure, that worked very well.”
The smirk on Lucas’ face made Eliott want to reach out and kiss it off.
“Not like your technics are on point either.”
“You literally winked, Eliott, then you went on ogling me like a piece of meat for weeks,” Lucas scoffed, shaking his head. “I’m not sure you’ve got any advice to give.”
“Not my fault you look like a snack,” Eliott waggled his eyebrows. He could still remember that evening Lucas had opened the door with his shirt wide-open, and a part of him was wondering how that would feel to touch the skin he had tried to forget.
Lucas rolled his eyes with a huff. “And here I thought you were cool. Next thing I know you’re going to be a dubstep fan.”
Eliott laughed. “You might not want to look at my vinyls right now.”
Lucas gave him a pointed look, and suddenly stood up from the couch. “Sorry to disagree, but I feel like I need to know what-”
Eliott protested, grabbing him by the waist and pulling him back. Lucas was thrown off-balance and crashed on top of him in a fit of giggles that made Eliott feel incredibly warm. Lucas’ back was pressed against his chest, Eliott’s arm loosely wrapped around his midsection, and it took a moment for Lucas to move away from his lap, but only to slide a few centimeters away to the side.
“Feel like calling it ‘later’ already?”, Eliott asked, tilting his head.
Lucas seemed to ponder the question. “I think so, yeah.” He sat cross-legged on the couch. “I told you, I’m not Ava’s dad. I’m her godfather though, and I’m helping Manon out because Ava’s dad’s a bit of an ass if you ask me. She’s been all over the place since they broke up.”
“When was that?”
“A month ago? Maybe a month and half,” Lucas sighed. “She was a mess, and I needed a new place, so we decided to move in together. For me it was a win-win situation but she was a bit- you know, reluctant at first. She was afraid that Ava would become a burden for me.” He snorted. “I told her she was being stupid. I guess she thought of other stuff I hadn’t thought about.” He glanced at him and they both chuckled.
“You really care about them,” Eliott observed, smiling.
“Yeah. I do. Manon and I-… Manon and I, we both have dysfunctional families. We kinda found each other and we built something like that,” Lucas admitted.
There was a small pause as he looked up at him.
His big blue eyes were capable of gleaming with mischief, squinting sarcastically or observing with the utmost softness in a few minute span of time. It made Eliott want to learn about all of his thoughts, all of his expressions and all of his tiny quirks.
Lucas eventually looked away, fiddling with the sleeve of the hoodie. “Look, I was serious when I said I like my living situation as it is,” he said. “I could do with a few more hours of sleep but other than that I love Ava and Manon is a sister to me. So if that’s going to be a problem, then I don’t think-”
Eliott reached out and covered Lucas’ fidgeting hands with his own. “It’s not about me, Lucas,” he said, seeking eye-contact. “If you’re happy like that, it’s fine.”
A smile broke onto Lucas’ face, illuminating his features and lighting up his eyes. “Really? You wouldn’t be- like, I don’t know, mad at me for staying home to babysit for free?”
“Not if I can play dubstep while I’m on my own.”
“So you’re really not going to even try to deny? You really are a dubstep fan?” Lucas groaned.
Eliott grinned, shrugging. “What can I say, I’m only human.”
Lucas shook his head, laughing, as Eliott’s phone started pinging again. Once. Twice. Lucas’ blue eyes traveled a couple of times between Eliott and the coffee-table, before the latter leaned over and reached for his phone. It was another text from Siham, telling him that they could meet sometime later that week.
He caught Lucas’ curious look, a small twitch in his eyelid making him wonder if he was not trying to simply play it cool.
“Siham is my best friend’s girlfriend. I may or may not have gone to her today to complain about you,” Eliott admitted. “It’s only fair I cancel the plans we had made to keep up with that topic after work.”
Strangely enough, Lucas didn’t say anything at first.
“I may or may not have complained about you too,” he groaned, looking at the coffee table. “I think Manon got fed up, that’s why she went to talk to you yesterday. Specifically when I told her to mind her business, for the record.”
Eliott grinned, leaning a little bit closer, until their faces were only centimeters away. “We could have nothing to complain about, if we set our minds to it.”
“Our minds? Really?” Lucas hummed, leaning a little bit closer as well.
Eliott pretended to give it a thought, then softly brushed his nose against Lucas’. “Well, yeah. Amongst other things perhaps.”
“Scratch the perhaps and I’m all in,” Lucas whispered, before closing the distance between their lips.
Eliott smiled into the kiss, letting the gentleness of it all wash away his doubts and his resentment of the past few weeks. Lucas’ lips parted slightly, enough for him to slide his tongue in his mouth, deepening the kiss like he had been dreaming of since the first time they had talked. He let his hands run along his sides, pulling him closer until Lucas was sliding in his lap. Closer, closer, yet still not enough. Somewhere along the line Eliott had become greedy, unapologetically greedy, but he couldn’t care less; his hands traveled down his spine and settled onto his hips, then his thighs, then his hips again, his body shivering at the mere feeling of Lucas’ fingertips grazing his cheeks and his neck. Lucas broke the kiss, both of them gasping for air and stars in their eyes.
“There’s something I need to tell you,” Lucas breathed, lips only a centimeter away from Eliott’s, his cheeks flushed and his hair tousled. “I had seen you before.” There was a pause then he added: “Before you helped me with the bed.”
Eliott’s brows furrowed. “Really?”
“Yeah,” Lucas said, voice rough, then he averted his eyes and cleared his throat a little. “I saw you the first time I came to visit the flat. You didn’t see me, you had your earbuds on and there was this song blasting in your ears- I don’t even think you realized there were people around you.” He chewed on his bottom lip, plump and red from the kissing. “It might be the reason I convinced Manon to move here.”
“You took the flat just to have a chance to meet me?” Eliott said, eyes widening.
Lucas huffed, cheeks red, and he leaned back until Eliott’s hand traveled up his back to prevent from falling. “The flat was nice, don’t get cocky.”
Eliott grinned, humming playfully as he leaned forward to nuzzle along his jawline. That’s how it feels?, he wondered briefly while Lucas was holding back a fit of giggles when he trailed kisses there. Feeling special?
*
It was too early.
He didn’t know exactly what time it was, but he just felt like it was too early, particularly for someone to be stupidly knocking at the front door. One could argue that he had been losing track, with every passing year, of what most people assumed was “early”, but it was a privilege he was fine having.
“There’s someone at the door,” Lucas mumbled, without even moving an eyelid.
“Hmm.” Eliott pulled him even closer with the arm he had snaked around his waist when they had started spooning, and buried his face deeper in the crook of his neck. It was the only answer he was willing to give right now. Whoever was on the other side of the door, whatever they wanted – it could wait.
“Eli,” Lucas said again, this time wriggling a little in his arms. “There’s someone at the door.”
If he had any intention to get up before (which he thankfully didn’t have), it would have been now dead and buried. The way the nickname had rolled off Lucas’ tongue so easily, added to the general sleepiness, was way too endearing.
“I know, and I don’t care,” Eliott groaned as the knocks persisted.
“Just go and tell them to go screw themselves.
“I don’t want to get up.”
Lucas huffed. “I’ll make sure you spend the best night of your life if you do.”
“That’s some level of cockiness right here,” Eliott mumbled, eventually pushing himself away from the warmth of Lucas’ body. “You better make due on this.”
He reached for his pair of sweatpants discarded the night before, not bothering with underwear when he was fifteen seconds away from getting back here to cuddle until the world had forgotten about them for good.
In the bed, Lucas waved from his hand, unfazed. “I’ll think of something.”
Eliott snorted and shook his head, running his hand through his untamed hair as he walked through the flat, chucking the door open with a less than welcoming expression on his face. For some reason, as soon as his eyes landed on the three guys standing by the door, he instantly knew that he could stop dreaming about going back to bed — even before the first one of them opened his mouth.
“Holy shit it’s true he’s a snack,” he blurted out.
“Dude.”
“What? I can’t say that either?”
“We’re here for Lucas,” the blond guy with the glasses interrupted, with a heavy sigh. “Manon said we were gonna find him here.”
Eliott blinked. Oh. Right. That’s where he knew them from. Well, knew was a big word, considering he had never talked to them, and that the most he had seen of them ever since he had come across them for the first time in the lounge was through Lucas’ Instagram.
“Yeah, he’s, uh,” he cleared his throat, gesturing vaguely. “He’s still slee-”
“What the fuck are you doing here?” Lucas’ voice intervened in his back, making his head snap to the side. His boyfriend was standing just behind him, hair tousled, scowl on his face, his black boxers and the tee-shirt Eliott was wearing the night before on.
Don’t get a boner now, he thought half-heartedly. Still, Lucas wearing his clothes made him feel all sorts of things that he was inconveniently not supposed to think about.
“You weren’t answering, so we got worried and came to check on you,” the third guy said.
“Funny, because the last time I called every single one of you to help me with Ava, you all made up bullshit excuses,” Lucas deadpanned.
“That’s different.”
“How is that different?” Lucas huffed, and the guys’ eyes immediately traveled up to Eliott. Something seemed to go unsaid, and one of his boyfriend’s friends eventually sighed.
“Look, Lucas, we were supposed to meet Friday night. I didn’t give you hell for it because I assumed something was… well, going on,” he muttered, clearing his throat as Eliott laughed a little, “but we got worried. It’s been two days.”
Lucas glared, before turning to Eliott. “Eli, meet my dearest friends. Yann, Arthur and Basile. And this is Eliott. Now fuck off,” he said, slamming the door shut.
*
“That wasn’t very nice of you,” Yann said, sounding mildly offended as he slouched back against the backrest of the booth they had all crowded in, at the coffee shop down the street. “We care about you, Lulu, and that’s the reward we get for it?”
“Nice people don’t walk around trapping their friend into meeting their boyfriend,” Lucas groaned into his drink.
“We didn’t trap you,” Basile protested, sputtering crumbs of croissant everywhere as he spoke.
Arthur scrunched his nose in disgust and rolled his eyes to himself. “We’re nice, deal with it.”
Eliott smirked in his own drink, thoroughly enjoying the spectacle. Not that he wouldn’t have given at least a kidney to crawl back under the blankets with Lucas, but right now he was having fun watching him being roasted. The conversation went pretty smoothly once Lucas stopped pouting, and Eliott grabbed every piece of information he could draw from the conversation. Yann was a journalist, Basile seemed to be an educator of sorts, Arthur was halfway done with a PhD involving petrochemicals and environment, and they had all met in high school, except for Lucas and Yann who had been friends since middle school.
“So, Eliott, are you planning on doing Lulu dirty?”, Basile asked all of a sudden, taking another bite of his third croissant.
“Baz.”
“What?” he protested, and the worst part was that he seemed genuinely lost. “What did I do now? I thought we were here to give the shovel talk.”
“Basile, I swear to God,” Arthur growled, pinching the bridge of his nose, “I’m not gonna stick around my whole life to prevent you from getting your ass beaten up. You should be starting to think before you talk.”
Eliott let out a small chuckle. “It’s fine, it’s fine. I don’t plan on doing anyone dirty for that matter.”
“Really?” Basile squinted. “Because you’re like, so hot, so objectively I’m trying to know how Lulu managed to score-”
“Well, I don’t know either,” Lucas interrupted, eyes throwing daggers, “but at least it didn’t take me nearly a year to get one date.”
Eliott nearly let out that considering the beginning of their relationship, they could well and truly have kept it up for a year before anything serious happened, but he kept it to himself.
“It didn’t take me a year,” Basile countered. “She was busy.”
There was a collective snort between Arthur, Yann and Lucas.
“Sure, Daphné was ‘busy’,” Arthur snickered, mimicking the quotation marks obnoxiously.
“Busy for a year,” Yann commented, nose in his coffee.
That was when it clicked in Eliott’s mind, as Lucas and Arthur started laughing. “Hold on, Daphné, you said? Daphné Lecomte?”
Lucas turned a quizzical look on him. “Yeah. You know her?”
“Of course, I work for her, I’m in charge of developing her new brand,” Eliott said, shrugging a little.
Basile chocked himself on the sip he was having, and he ended up spitting it out, splashing his button down and Arthur’s shirt in the process.
“Did I say something wrong?” Eliott enquired, furrowing his brows as Yann and Arthur were patting Basile in the back while he kept coughing a lung out. Lucas leaned forward to hand him a napkin, but his friend pushed his hand away.
“You’re the hot designer guy?!” Basile croaked out between two coughing fits.
Eliott sent a confused and slightly panicked look to Lucas. He was the what now?
“Daphy’s been talking non-stop about the hot guy she’s working with and Mr. One-Braincell over here was convinced she was cheating on him,” Arthur filled in, rolling his eyes. “Bro, we fucking told you a thousand times she wasn’t cheating.”
“I never said she was cheating,” Basile retorted.
“Sure, that’s why you’ve been scanning all fucking Instagram to try to find him,” Arthur groaned.
“I can assure you, it’s always been professional between us,” Eliott added, taking a sip from his coffee. “She’s, uh. She’s a bit too intense for me.”
“She’s too intense for most people, don’t worry,” Lucas snorted, patting Eliott’s leg under the table.
The conversation kept up for about half an hour, then they all gathered onto the sidewalk outside of the coffee shop. “By the way, are you guys up for an afternoon at the flat?,” Lucas asked. “Like, next weekend probably? Manon and I want to make a little something to celebrate the fact that we moved in, but it’s a bit tricky to play it party hard these days so we’re, like, going to keep it low-key.”
“Low-key,” Arthur repeated. “What kind of low-key are we talking here?”
“Manon’s cakes type of low-key,” Lucas shrugged.
“I’m in,” Basile said immediately. “Her cakes are too die for.”
Yann and Arthur approved in unison.
“What about you? Up for it?” Lucas glanced up at Eliott.
“Yeah sure,” he smiled.
There was something equally exciting and equally scary in the prospect of attending an event, even a small get-together, as Lucas’ boyfriend. He hadn’t been a part of a couple since… Way too long, particularly if he was leaving the Joris incident aside. A thought crossed his mind as they walked back to their apartment complex, his arm finding its way around Lucas’ shoulders almost naturally.
“Would you, uh, would it be too much if I get my friends to come too?,” Eliott enquired, cocking his head as they waited at a crosswalk. “Just three, not thirty. They’re already giving me hell because they want to find out everything about you. Might as well kill two birds with one stone?”
“Are you comparing introducing me to your friends to a chore?” Lucas scoffed.
“Well, the problem isn’t you,” Eliott said, serious, “rather that I’m hoping you won’t freak out and dump me in front of everybody if my friends give you the shovel talk. I don’t doubt Arthur could get rid of my dead body in an acid bath, but like, my friend Idriss can be a bit much when he wants to be.”
Lucas’ eyes narrowed. “Am I supposed to freak out? You think they won’t like me?”
Eliott laughed, pecking Lucas on the cheek. “Of course they will like you.”
*
Instead of next weekend, and due to an insane number of scheduling conflicts, get-together at Manon and Lucas’ took place a Saturday afternoon at the end of the following month, making Eliott’s and Lucas’ worlds eventually collide, among enough sweets and cakes baked by Manon to feed their building — probably the adjacent one as well. According to Lucas, she had that habit of stress-baking since high school, which is why he wasn’t all that surprised anymore as she kept bringing more and more things to eat to the already full table, set in the living-room.
“Don’t worry, I’m fine,” Manon had insisted when Lucas and Eliott had enquired. Her ex-boyfriend, Charles, had suddenly decided that he would drop by that very weekend to meet his family in Paris, and spend two days with his daughter. “He’s just getting jealous because he saw Eliott with Ava on a few Insta stories and suddenly he can’t deal with not being the only man in my daughter’s life.”
“When is something not my fault?” Eliott had protested while Lucas was laughing.
The guests had started to arrive early in the afternoon, filling the living room. Eliott, who had gone to his flat to grab something, was surprised to come face-to-face with Imane once he got back to Lucas’. “What are you doing here?”, he asked, disbelieved, although not before greeting her.
“Well, it’s not thanks to you that I got invited, to say the least,” she deadpanned. “I’m a friend of your boyfriend’s. And Manon. We go back to high school.”
So that’s what people mean, when they say the world is small, Eliott figured as he chatted with her for a while. It became slightly awkward when one of Lucas’ friends, Emma, showed up with her boyfriend Alex — who, roughly six months ago, had been claiming he was just in for some fun as he was stripping Eliott naked — but if anything Eliott was accommodating. When Alex persistently looked the other way, he simply focused on his boyfriend, as Lucas kept introducing him to new faces. Yann, Arthur and Basile welcomed him as a long lost friend, shouting and screaming as soon as they caught sight of him.
The first meeting between Idriss, Sofiane, Siham and Lucas had gone well, if only because Eliott had already prepared himself for all the obnoxious comments Idriss and Sofiane would make about him ‘getting soft with the years’ and how they ‘never thought they would see Demaury cuddle’ and a whole bunch of crappy things like these that made Eliott roll his eyes.
“It’s too bad the little one isn’t here, I would have paid to see you interact with her,” Idriss snickered while Lucas was talking with Siham — Sofiane had long sneaked out to talk with Imane.
Eliott glared. “Well, as it turns out I’m not as bad at it as you’d think I am.” It was only half a truth, considering that Ava was the least impressionable six-month-old baby girl in the world, but no one needed to know that he had absolutely no hand in the miracle.
He kept talking a minute or two with his best friend, then he went to check how things were going in the kitchen. “Need anything?” he offered as Manon was spinning around like an octopus.
Lucas wasn’t lying, everywhere Eliott’s gaze landed he could see cupcakes, colorful macarons, cookies, something that looked like lemon pastries and various chocolate cakes — there were also a few baskets of mini-croissants and mini-pains au chocolat. Imane, who was leaning against the fridge alongside Sofiane, widened her eyes comically and shook her head fondly with a smile.
“It’s fine, actually these are the last ones,” Manon said, smiling proudly, then she frowned: “If I didn’t forget anything. Well, if I did, that’s too bad.”
Imane grabbed a few things to help get the plates in the other room, and Eliott went to imitate her, followed by Sofiane.
“Lucas seems to be a real keeper,” his friend observed.
Eliott snorted. “Why, because he’s got a roommate who can cook for an entire town?”
“Nah. I mean, he looks really nice. That’s a chance the bad blood got cleared between you two, because you’d have really lost a serious opportunity at being happy otherwise,” Sofiane observed.
“You’re growing soft, Sof,” Eliott huffed, but he couldn’t stop himself from grinning. He was about to head towards the other room when Sofiane called him out.
“Eli,” he said, sounding more serious. “Did you-” He paused, then bit at his bottom lip nervously, and Eliott already knew what this would be about, before his friend even got behind the idea of not having a hundred choices of words to speak his mind. “Did you tell him?”
His grip on the plate he was carrying tightened, or maybe it was just something in the pit of his stomach. In any case, it made his skin itch a little and he averted his eyes. “No.” The last month had been so happy that Eliott couldn’t have possibly found it in himself to break the news. “I don’t want him to stick with me because he’s taking pity on me.”
Sofiane quirked a brow. “What about the part where you thought people would automatically leave you?”
“It’s the same thing. Either they leave or they stick around for the bad reasons.”
Like Lucille, he didn’t add, but he felt like he didn’t need to. Sofiane knew everything there was to know.
“So what’s the plan? Keep this hidden until an impossible situation forces the truth out?”, Sofiane insisted, a deep crease between his brow.
“The truth about what?” Lucas asked, strolling into the kitchen.
Eliott’s heart might have skipped a bit. “Charles,” he said automatically.
Lucas quirked a brow, looking confused.
“Sofiane thinks Charles came back so fast because he thought Manon was dating someone else,” Eliott shrugged, then he turned to his friend. “Sof, I think they are waiting for the cake.”
“Oh. Yeah,” Sofiane mumbled, exiting the kitchen.
“Let me take this,” Lucas offered, picking a plate of cookies, already ready to go back to the living room.
Eliott suddenly felt something tighten in his chest, and he immediately put the plates he had been holding back on the kitchen elements. “Lucas,” he called out, and when his boyfriend turned back, he opened his arms and made grabby motions with his hands. “I want a hug.”
Lucas huffed a laugh and came back, putting the plate down and sinking into Eliott’s embrace. “What’s that about?” he asked, teasing, as Eliott nuzzled into his hair.
“I just wanted a hug,” he said.
His hands traveled up to cup his face, before he reached down for a kiss that had Lucas humming contentedly. They parted with a few more pecks, Lucas’ hands up Eliott’s shoulder-blades.
“I hope it’s fine,” Lucas said softly, meeting Eliott’s interrogative glance. “I know you don’t really like when there are too many people. I don’t want you to feel uncomfortable.”
Eliott softened immediately. He had never expressly told Lucas about it — that it tended to exhaust him whenever he was the center of the attention for too long, that he struggled sometimes to entertain multiple conversations with multiple people in a short period of time, that he needed to take breaks from people and that’s why he always went out to smoke, if only to have an excuse — and yet. He almost considered telling him right there and then. He had become better at this, better at accepting himself, better at accepting that there were things he couldn’t change, better at accepting the truth as it was. But Lucas looked happy, surrounded by his friends, celebrating a new life he was becoming week after week a part of.
“It’s fine,” he said, smiling, then he wrapped his arms around him once again. “It’s fine as long as there’s you.”
