The trailer of Shimla Mirchi begins with a charming guy named Avi who has no problem wooing a girl and confessing his love for Rajkummar. He falls in love with a free, spirited girl named Naina Rakul and decides to write her a letter in which he confesses his love for her.

Rakul Preet Singh looks cute, and her pairing with Rajkummar may appeal to audiences, but this love story requires a bigger - than - movie star to work for it. Despite the best efforts of Rao and Singh, their romance is frisson - free. As the stumbling and passionate Avinash, he channels his inner Rukh Sharma, a man with a heart of gold and a love for his wife.

India's ace of pace: What makes Mohammed Shami so dangerous?

MUMBAI: It was a typically pleasant, slightly nippy March morning in Dharamshala, but Mohammed Shami, who was in town to play in the Deodhar Trophy, was feeling the chill. The India pacer’s estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, had just launched an all-out attack on the 28-year-old, her enraged face on every TV channel accusing him of infidelity. More embarrassingly for him, she had even made public his whatsapp conversations with a Pakistani lady.

Clearly worried about the turn of events, Shami had seemed distracted the previous evening and was smashed around for 96 runs off his 10 overs. Worse was to follow the next day: When the BCCI announced fresh contracts for the Indian players, Shami’s name was missing. Worried about the image of the Indian cricketer post the controversy, the BCCI had decided to withhold his contract.

The speedster, who was the hero of India’s memorable Test win in Johannesburg against South Africa, taking 5/28 in the second innings, had to now undergo an anti-corruption inquiry by the BCCI, which soon cleared him of any wrongdoing. Shami got his contract, but lost his place in the ODI team after failing the yo-yo test.

Now, barely a year later, Shami is a certainty for the World Cup. Adversity seems to have made him better. That he had worked hard on his fitness was evident in England last summer, when he played all the five Tests of the series, taking 16 wickets to emerge as one of the few shining lights in a series India lost 1-4.

Before going to Australia, Shami played a Ranji match for Bengal against Kerala with a rider that he couldn’t bowl more than 15 overs in an innings — he ended up bowling 26.

In Australia, combining superbly with Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, the fast bowler took 16 wickets in four Tests at 26.18, as India’s pace battery played a huge part in the team’s 2-1 triumph Down Under. Picked for the ODIs after a long time, Shami put up a decent show in Australia, before coming into his own in New Zealand, getting the Man-of-the-Match award in the first and third ODIs. In three ODIs, he has picked seven wickets @14.71 prompting skipper Virat Kohli to compliment the pacer. “It’s the fittest that I’ve seen him,” he said.

“He’s the main reason why we are dominating opponents. He’s a captain’s delight. A few personal problems were pulling him down, but from this Australian tour, he’s been the difference between us and the opposition. He’s the ‘Virat Kohli’ of our bowling. It’s because of bowlers like him that a captain will feel that his team can pick 20 wickets anytime. He’s in complete control of whatever he wants to bowl,” praised former India seamer Raju Kulkarni.

Shami’s sizzling form has gladdened the heart of chief selector MSK Prasad too.

“He’s been phenomenal. Right through the last year, since the series against South Africa, he’s been bowling extremely well. Credit also must go to the fitness regimen that he’s been put under by Shankar (Basu, team India trainer) and Patrick (Farhart, physio). The bowling coach (Bharat Arun) has been working on him.

“Credit should also go to the workload management, which has kept him fresh. We didn’t pick him against the West Indies at home against India,” Prasad told TOI.

The former India stumper also praised the BCCI for standing by the pacer during his tough time.

Explaining what makes Shami so dangerous for batsmen, Prasad said: “According to biomechanics, the entire momentum should be directed towards the target. In this case, the target is the stumps. If you see a majority of his wickets, they’re either bowled or lbw. If you see his body, his rhythm, everything is directed towards the target — he’s blessed with it. Probably, that’s why he generates so much pace.”

Former India batsman and chief selector, Sandeep Patil, who picked Shami for India in early 2013, said: “I first saw him about eight years back when I was a director at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), after Arun asked me to have a look at him. He was a special bowler. I feel so proud that I was a part of the system when these boys got selected. We got a lot of stick for dropping some greats, but today it’s been proved that it was an ideal decision.”

When Shami was dropped from the Indian team last year after failing to clear the yo-yo test, Patil had aired his views about the need to back the pacer in what was a difficult phase. “I’m happy to see him make a strong comeback. It’s not easy when your mind is unstable. I had said at that time that considering the rough time he was going through, he deserved another crack at the yo-yo test,” he recalls.

A conversation with Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary, who is his close friend, gives one an idea about the steel that Shami’s made of.

“It’s his immense mental strength that has helped him overcome that phase. All his personal issues were out in the public domain. I knew that he’d bounce back. His face or body language never gave me the indication that he was going through a tough time,” says Tiwary.

Tiwary tells you what helped Shami overcome the most tumultuous period in his life.

“He deserves all the credit for his success because his vision was clear. He knew that if he had to overcome these issues, he had to keep his focus on cricket. He worked hard on his game, and kept himself away from all these issues. The best thing he did was that he wasn’t in Kolkata when this controversy erupted. He was in his native place (Amroha). That really helped him. He used to upload his practice videos from there,” Tiwary recalls.

What makes Shami a menacing bowler? “After Zaheer Khan, if there is one bowler I’ve seen who can land the ball on the seam, it’s Shami,” says Tiwary.

Tiwary, who played 12 ODIs and two T20Is for India, believes that like in the Tests, Shami can be India’s strike bowler in the ODIs too.

Patil, though, cautions that it’s crucial that Shami’s form lasts till the World Cup.

“Seeing his rhythm and form, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he remains fit and consistent till the World Cup, because main picture abhi baaki hai!,” he says.

A controversial citizenship list in northeast India that has left almost two million people facing statelessness has been slammed by its political backers as those excluded from it face an uncertain future.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, which runs Assam state where the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was collated, pushed for the list saying it was necessary to detect “foreign infiltrators”.

Critics said the NRC process reflected the BJP’s goal to serve Hindus, with a large chunk of those excluded expected to be Muslims.

But the strategy appears to have backfired with local BJP leaders claiming that many Bengali-speaking Hindus, a key vote bank for the party, were left off the list.

“We do not trust this NRC. We are very unhappy,” Ranjeet Kumar Dass, BJP party president in Assam told the Press Trust of India late on Saturday.

“Many people with forged certificates were included,” Dass said, while 200,000 “genuine Indians” were left out. Those left off have 120 days to appeal at special Foreigners Tribunals.

“If we see that FTs are delivering adverse judgements on the appeals by genuine Indian citizens […] we will bring in legislation and make an act to protect them,” Dass added.

A leader of the main opposition Congress Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said his party would support those who were wrongly excluded, including providing them with legal aid.

Assam has long seen large influxes from elsewhere, including under British colonial rule and around the 1971 war when millions fled into India.

Under the NRC, only those who could demonstrate they or their forebears were in India before 1971 could be included in the list.

Assam villagers told AFP about family members who were excluded even though they had similar documents to their relatives.

“Our children’s names are in the list but my wife’s name is missing. She submitted all the documents and records […] Why?” asked resident Jaynal Abudin.

Those left out, many of whom are poor and illiterate, have to navigate a long and expensive legal process that could include bringing their cases to the courts if they are rejected by a foreigner tribunal.

The NRC, which comes in the wake of New Delhi revoking the autonomy of occupied Kashmir, has reinforced fears among India’s 170 million Muslim minority that they are being singled out by the central government.

The BJP has previously said it wants the NRC to be replicated nationwide.

Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari on Saturday called for the list to be applied in the capital, saying it was needed to identify illegal immigrants.

The International Yoga Day celebrations in West Bengal were a low-key affair on Thursday with neither Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee nor any of her ministers participating in any yoga session anywhere.Union minister Mahesh Sharma and other Bharatiya Janata Party leaders performed yoga asanas in public as part of the International Day of Yoga celebrations.When contacted, Trinamool Congress secretary general and state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee said the party observed the International Yoga Day every year and this year was no exception. “International Yoga Day was observed in Moulali today. In the districts also, it was observed in schools. Last year, we had observed the International Yoga Day in Kolkata,” he said.Sharma took part in a yoga session near Shahid Minar in the heart of the city. PNB scam: CBI chargesheet names Allahabad Bank CEO, 21 others

Mumbai, May 14 (IANS) The CBI on Monday filed a charge sheet against Allahabad Bank MD and CEO Usha Ananthasubramanian and 21 others, including 11 bank officials, in the over Rs 13,000 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case in which diamantaire Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi were allegedly involved. Ananthasubramanian, who was questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the case, was the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PNB between August 2015 before her appointment in the Allahabad Bank in May 2017. The agency also named PNB Executive Directors K.V. Brahmaji Rao and Sanjiv Sharan, and General Managers Nehal Ahad (who dealt in international operations) and Rajesh Jindal in its charge sheet filed in a special CBI court here. CBI officials said the charge sheet names Nirav Modi and his brother Nishal in connection with the issuance of Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) totalling Rs 6,498.20 crore during 2011-17. They said that a separate charge sheet in the second case involving Choksi will be filed later. The officials said Nirav Modi and Nishal were beneficiaries of the fraud, authorised signatories, and in the know of the whole scam. The CBI had filed three FIRs between January and March to probe the PNB fraud. Most of the accused are common to these cases. The charge sheet filed on Monday is based on CBI's FIR registered on January 31 against Nirav Modi, his wife Ami, brother Nishal, and uncle Choksi, among others. The second and third FIRs focus on Choksi, Gitanjali Gems and others. So far, 15 persons have been arrested while Modi and Choksi fled the country in January. Modi's group companies -- Diamonds R US, Stellar Diamonds, and Solar Exports -- are also named in the charge sheet as borrowers. Seven employees of Modi's group of companies -- Hemant Bhat, an authorised signatory; Vipul Ambani, President (Finance) of Firestar International; Miten Pandya, then Finance Manager of Firestar; Manish Bosamiya, former AGM of Firestar; Subhash Parab, key Executive (currently absconding); and Arjun Patil and Kavita Mankikar -- were also named in the charge sheet. Chartered Accountant Sanjay Kumar Rambhia is also named in the charge sheet, which also mentions then PNB employees Gokul Nath Shetty (Deputy Manager), who was the first to be arrested, Manoj Kharat (Single Window Operator), Bechu B. Tiwari (Chief Manager), Yashwant Joshi (Manager), Praful Sawant (Officer) and Internal Chief Auditors Mohinder Kumar Sharma and Bishnubrata Mishra. The charge sheet says that Nirav Modi, Nishal, and other public and private persons conspired for the issuance of fraudulent LoUs in favour of the three firms (named in the charge sheet) without any sanctioned limit, cash margin and making entries in the Core Banking Solution (CBS) system. Investigators found that the funds were syphoned off to purported overseas supplier firms that were a set-up by Nirav Modi and his firms. "Senior officials of the PNB did not implement Reserve Bank of India (RBI) circulars on the matter and misrepresented the facts. Reconciliation of SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Inter-Bank Financial Telecommunication) messaging system CBS was not done despite repeated caution notices of the RBI," a CBI official said. CBI Spokesperson Abhishek Dayal said that the CBI has searched 42 premises, arrested 15 persons and questioned 80 witnesses in the case. A similar fraud was detected in 2016, in which funds under the garb of LoUs were transferred in favour of a Hong-Kong-based company, purportedly issued by the Chandigarh branch of a nationalised bank to overseas branches of two other nationalised banks, including PNB. Ananthasubramanian was the CEO of the PNB at that point in time, said the CBI. "Ananthasubramanian and her team were in the knowledge of the crime. She along with other bank officials has been named in the charge sheet as they could not give satisfactory replies in regard to the case during questioning by the agency," the CBI added.
