Jonnie Wright is feeling blessed.

Something fun and awesome happened today. I want to give a shoutout to Sharon, my wonderful Uber driver. She took me 2.1 miles of the scheduled 46 miles between our Lakeland crib and Topgolf in Tampa, where I'd scheduled a two hour slice/heel/toe/top/whiff-fest. I just downloaded the Uber app this morning and this is/was literally my first - and last - scheduled Uber ride. Sharon, who has worked for Uber for five years, came highly rated via the Uber metrics, and she lived up to it at first as she was extremely friendly and engaging (W)right from the get go. It was also clear that Sharon had and has a lot of anger and frustration - about how little she is making with Uber and about how they treat their drivers. Sharon was expressing her frustrations about the Uber app, Uber management, Uber ownership, fellow Uber drivers, and any word that starts with the "ooo" sound. She was driving as an unhappy driver might drive - focusing a lot on her venting and less on maintaining a safe driving speed through Lakeland's winding back roads.

Two miles in I told her I wanted to end the ride - that I would pay her the full fare, which, I told her, was $46. She gasped a bit at how little money I was being charged. Sharon is good at many things with poker not being one of them. I asked her to pull into a business parking lot. She smiled and gently protested. I told her my mind was made up. She complied.

We sat there for a few minutes, chatting. I said, "Sharon, I am going to walk home from here. I need the exercise, so this is a win for me. I am going to give you a $100 tip and a five star review, which is also a win for you." She started to cry. I told her that she is a kind and sweet woman who is letting her anger win the battle of ownership of the real estate between her ears. Her crying turned into gut-wrenching sobs. Sharon said that she'd been in multiple accidents over the past two years - hit by uninsured drivers - that she'd just lost her full time job with Verizon and that she can't make decent money with Uber, and can't find a decent job. I told her I own a company. She asked if I was hiring. I replied, "I would not hire you - not this version of you." She needed to hear that. Through tears, she said, "you're (W)right."

I said, "Look, there ain't no bad guys and there are no victims. Those roles don't exist. The only role that does is hero. Be a hero in your own story and in the stories of the people you pick up and Uber around. You must protect them from your anger, not make them a victim of it, just as you must save yourself from the burning building of your own existence. Don't wait for God to intervene. Don't rely on magical thinking. Stand up and step up and be a badass Superwoman. You are worth it." I could barely choke out the last words as we were both weeping like wounded children.

She grabbed my hand from the front seat and I leaned in and hugged her from the back, both actions being blatant violations of Uber policy and massive evidence of the power of love and compassion. A day that would have been full of me (relatively quietly) cursing at the Topgolf supplied driver turned into a chance to help someone see their own worth. How cool is that?

As I stepped out of her car, I said, "You've got this!" Sharon smiled. And so she does. And I did not slice ONE ball today. Not one!

It had been two days since you had figured out her plan of going to Duskwood. You had tried to follow up on her, spying on her friend’s phones, but oh boy, she was smart. There was absolutely nothing suspicious on the message and call logs and they wouldn’t give away her location. You had logged on the traffic camera near Jessy’s, but it showed only her getting out of her apartment and going in, and occasionally Richy with her. Cleo’s door could be seen partly on CCTV of bakery shop near her, and you could confirm yourself that she wasn’t there either. One by one, you ruled out everyone she knew in Duskwood, even that disgusting fuckboy Phil, who seemed to have two girlfriends at the time. You couldn’t resist and sent an image of Phil and the blonde girl to the third wheel via anonymous text and entertain yourself looking the rage-filled texts for a while. MC’s phone was still turned off and hadn’t been on since her departure. She wasn’t on motel’s guest lists, but you had your doubts about using aliases, so you checked on the CCTV on motel’s parking lot. Nothing. Like the earth had swallowed her.

You stared numb on your screen. You had turned every stone to find her and now you had to just admit it, you had no idea where she was and why she had left. That was actually none of your business, you had to remind yourself, but how could you keep her safe in the future if you didn’t know her whereabouts?There was only one option and you knew it. Few clicks later and you received a now familiar message:

Thank you for booking your trip to Duskwood from us!

You decided early on that you would avoid meeting her directly with all costs. You just had to see her in your own eyes that she was alright and figure out some data so you could keep track on her later. You packed lightly, just your laptop and some clothes and left your safehouse with a doubt in your mind. You had this terrible feeling that something bad was about to happen and you didn’t have a clue, what it could be.

The train left on time and you looked out of the window in the darkness. It would be middle of the night when you arrived, and you hoped that the night would cover you for unwanted attention that your arrival could rise. You checked on your phone once again and saw that she was still offline. You scrolled your ridiculous short lists of conversations; MC, Lilly and Hannah and all of them were from months ago. You wondered if you should send a text to Lilly and Hannah but terminated it quickly. This mess didn’t need any more participants that it already had.“The Duskwood Express will arrive on platform 2 – “

You tossed your backpack on the comfy looking bed and looked around you. This motel room was too familiar from the time you had searched Hannah and it brought some painful memories to you. You remembered all those texts with MC in this room, how it had brightened your mood instantly when you had opened the messaging app and saw MC’s enthusiastic texts about the investigation. She had teased and pushed your buttons many times with those cheeky messages of hers, and you would do anything to get back of those times, where it was almost carefree. She, or anyone else had had no idea, that you had stayed in Duskwood all that time, monitoring closely everything that happened.

You allowed your mind return of that one night, when you met MC first time after Hannah had been found and you had instantly clicked with her, to the point where you completed each other’s sentences at first night so easily, that you thought that you had knew her long time. When she laughed and it had sounded like little birds in the spring, and it reminded you of a small, happy river with easy flow. When she made you laugh with her and it was the easiest thing you had ever done, felt like a different life now and was a fade memory now. You had touched her gently and her skin was so soft that your fingers slide like a good dream on the back of hers. When she kissed you and you forgot everything else in the world and drowned in those lips like a leaf in the open sea. Your sweaty bodies together naked on the bed, exploring all places and surfaces on your bodies. Sound of her moaning and calling your name, over and over again and it was the sweetest thing what your ears had heard. You inside of her.

You couldn’t breathe and opening a window felt the most logical thing to do. Spring breeze welcomed your face and you tried to calm down from the emotional rollercoaster you had spent your last 15 minutes on. You suddenly felt very tired, like you hadn’t slept on months, which were kind of true. Exhaustion overtook you, and you turned off the light, drifting to a world with full of nightmares.When you woke up, it was still dark and you had to think for a while, where the hell you were. Recalls from last night came like a car accident – quickly and violent, and you had to close your eyes again to get rid of the absolute horror what flooded you.

It took few minutes until you calmed down and turned the light on. Still groggy from the sleep, you brushed your teeth and made coffee in the small kitchenette. You had a feeling that you would need a lot of coffee to survive for the day.

You made logical assumptions that she would be with her friends, why else she would had come here? Jessy was her best friend, but she was close to Lilly and Hannah too, so you divided your screen with three tracking programs and one by one, the CCTV near them opened in the screen.

Now you waited them to woke up and start their day.

The GPS tracker on Lilly’s phone showed her to be heading to downtown. You followed her steps via your monitor and pulled every single camera on that route to see what she was up to. She was alone and clearly in a good mood. Small smile crept up on your lips when you watched her, you were glad that she was doing okay.

She arrived on the local Tesco and after a while, she came out with a bag of groceries. You waited her return to her apartment, but she took a left turn from the road, which was new. Interested, you zoomed in with the camera and saw her going in a building near the town square. You waited for several minutes, but she didn’t come out and then you knew it.

You had found her.

You had your confirmation in hour later when they both came out from the building. They were laughing together, and you could see from afar, that MC was teasing Lilly about something, since she looked joyful and Lilly rather morbid. You recognized her mood quite well. You looked MC like you were enchanted, forget to breath and all you could see was her. She had cut her hair shorter; it was above her shoulders now and all slightly curly, and you actually liked it. She could also shave her whole head, and you would still like it. She was wearing a loose cardigan and jeans and those red shoes, which you had teased her as belonging to Dorothy from Oz. She looked happy and safe.

And that was all that mattered.

You allowed yourself to look at her for a minute and then you turned the screen off. Your work here was done; now you knew where she lived and could see her on street cameras, and you would find her new phone number based on address easily. You packed your things and booked a ticket for evening train, so you could leave Duskwood for good. When all the errands were done and train was leaving in a few hours, you laid on your back on the bed and looked your phone. One thought had invaded your head and you couldn’t get rid of it.

But why had she moved to Duskwood?

You tried to be reasonable, she had friends here. But she had had friends too in the city she previously lived and a decent job, why would she leave those? Her parents were long gone but she had said that her friend had been her family for years now. Her actions didn’t make any sense now, like they often didn’t. Like you had said to her in the early beginning, that she was so mysterious and intriguing, and she was proving your point efficiently here. There must be a reason, why she would leave her previous life behind. You took your phone in your hands and looked it suspiciously. You checked that Lilly was now alone in her home. After a few minutes’ serious consideration, you opened the messages and typed.

Jake: Hello, Lilly.

She answered quickly, like she always did.

Lilly: Oh no, no, no

You weren’t surprised for her answer, since you knew that they probably had talked about you a lot with MC. And she was the one, who didn’t have great things to say about your actions, so you doubted that she anything positive to say about you.

Jake: I need to ask you a favor.

Lilly: No.

Jake: Tell me, why did MC move to Duskwood?

You decided to get straight to the point, since circling the matter wasn’t going to get you anywhere. You saw her typing instantly and then erasing it. You had to wait a quite long time that she composed a whole message, and it wasn’t enjoyable to read.

Lilly: Why on earth do you think you had right to know? Why are you so intrusive about this, since you dumped her? She’s trying to manage that you left her and honestly Jake, I thought you were better.

You read those lines and felt offended, she was being unreasonable. She didn’t even know why you had left MC, but people broke up every day and usually their families were supportive.

Jake: I am sorry to hear that. But she does have friends, and you all have shown me your friendliness towards her many times before. She will overcome this.

Lilly: How do you overcome something that she will never be able to forget?

Jake: She will forget me.

You saw her writing again and composing a message for a long time. You felt frustrated and started to regret approaching Lilly, since this was going nowhere.

Lilly: I can not say anything else to you or tell the reasons why she is here, but you should have listened her when she said she needed to talk. All I am saying that you need to talk to her yourself if you want answers. And trust me, you definitely want to hear them.

Now you were just confused, why Lilly couldn’t tell you what you were asking for? You tried to ask her again, but she just stayed offline and that was probably intentional. You looked the time and noticed your train would leave in half an hour and the next train would leave tomorrow.

You knew that you couldn’t go without an answer and you wouldn’t get them at the safehouse from her. Frustrated, you threw your backpack on the floor and left the motel room.

It was raining so much that you had trouble at seeing in front of you. You arrived her buildings door quicker than you had thought, and half of the trip were forgotten in your mess of thoughts. You had absolutely no plan how to deal with this situation since you didn’t want to be seen but she lived on the second floor. There was light coming from the window, which means she was still awake. You wondered could you climb up to her balcony, when you heard way too familiar noise behind your back.

“If you are thinking about spying me without my consent, think again”, she said coldly. You turned around and saw her standing right in front of you. “Lilly told me that you might pay me a visit”, she continued.

There was nothing coming out of your mouth, not even a simple “hello”. You realized that you had made a terrible mistake and nothing, absolutely nothing, had gone according to your lousy plan. All you could do, was to stare her.

“Yeah, I didn’t think that you would had anything to say either”, she sneered, and you felt a sting in your heart when she talked like that to you. “You’re satisfied when everyone plays by your rules, but tables have turned, my love.”

My love. Not ever those two words had said so bitter tone and never would you thought that you wouldn’t want to hear her say them to you. You stared her plainly and tried to figure a way out of this situation. Talking to her would be a great mistake, and you didn’t know if you two were being watched.

“What makes you think I would like you to play by my rules?” You rudely asked. You hated to talk to her like this, but you couldn’t allow her to get hopes up in vain. This situation was so bizarre and this hostile character of hers felt as stranger to you. The next thing you were going to say, would be just plain evil.

“As I recall, I didn’t want you to be part of my life anymore.”

She looked hurt and tears had filled her eyes. You felt guilt instantly rushing in on you and felt ashamed. Your purpose here wasn’t to hurt her more, but everything you did and said just made things worse.

“I am sorry, MC” you said in a raspy voice. “I will go now, and we will never meet again. I should have not come.” The rain poured harder than ever, and you started to get cold and could see that she was shivering too. Somewhere afar you could hear thunderstorm approaching and you wanted her to get in before she would catch a cold.

“Go home, MC”, you said and felt exhausted again. She looked so fragile when looking at you and all you wanted was to pull her close to you and keep her warm. She only had her cardigan as protecting her from the rain and the wind. You let your eyes wander on her; she was so vivid when you saw her in your own eyes without the screen in between. The new haircut was now wet, and you followed the raindrops on her skin to her neck and cleavage. Her hands were crossed tightly on her front and you remembered those long fingers caressing your back, writing letters while you were guessing what she was trying to type.

Then you saw it; first you thought the lightning had done it tricks to you and you squinted your eyes, trying to see it again. She moved her right hand to tuck hair strand behind her ear and then you just knew that you had fucked up. Fucked up really good this time.

Everything stopped; you couldn’t see the darkness anymore or feel cold, clock didn’t move, and sense of rush flooded in your veins, tingling all your fingers and toes. Adrenalin came like a shockwave and almost knocked you over. You tried to say something, but the words got lost in the way. You opened your mouth, trying to form questions but nothing came out. With quick steps you walked to her and got a tight grip from her cardigan and tried to pull it open.

“What the fuck, Jake” she flinched and tried to take a few steps back while pushing you away, but your hands didn’t ease on her, keeping her on place. “Let go of me!”

In normal situation you would had let go on her instantly when she asked. But now you didn’t care, you had to see it thoroughly in your own eyes. You ripped her cardigans buttons open and there it was. Something heavy sank in your stomach and you felt panic arising inside of you; your sight begun to look a place to escape, and you wanted so badly this to be dream. But no matter how hard you tried to wake up, it was still there, under the ridiculous looking flowery shirt.

A bump.

You looked her bewildered. I swear to you God, if you ever have existed, it is a great time to do some favors. But nothing happened, the rain, the wind and she were still there, just a few inches away from you. You could feel her hot breath in your skin, and it felt like a getting third-degree burn. She saw from your face that you knew and sighted heavily.

“Well, I tried to tell you. I really did.”

And the world went black in your eyes.

Advantages of Crowdsourcing

The benefits of crowdsourcing include cost savings, increased speed, and the ability to collaborate with people who have skills that an in-house team may lack. If a task normally takes one employee a week to complete, a company can reduce the turnaround time to a matter of hours by breaking the job down into many smaller parts and assigning those segments to a large group of workers.

Disadvantages of Crowdsourcing

The first disadvantage is danger of manipulation. Since these platforms rely on qualified communities, using Open Innovation platforms reduces the risk of the product being manipulated. Or else, it is entirely possible that competitors will have a negative impact on your innovation project by providing false feedback. For instance, if you use Facebook to solicit feedback on a product or even allow people to vote on it, this method is relatively simple to manipulate. The second disadvantage is danger of loss of image. If the concept or item you want to present to the audience is only ostensibly innovative, you risk losing your image. Besides that, many crowdfunding projects are based on rewards; for example, investors may be able to participate in the launch of a new product or obtain a gift in exchange for their investment.

Disadvantages of Crowdfunding

The first disadvantage is it takes a lot of time and effort. Successful campaigns necessitate a significant amount of personal commitment in terms of time, effort, and money. To sell your idea, we will invest a significant amount of time and money in developing prototypes, convincing videos, and persuasive content. The second disadvantage is possibility of failure. The unfortunate reality is that only a small percentage of crowdfunding campaigns achieve their objectives. If users fail, users may face negative publicity and embarrassment. The third disadvantage is theft of idea. Unless the crowdfunding idea is patented and users have all of the necessary copyrights and trademarks in place, it could be stolen. I HAVE RETURNED FROM TENNESSEE!

God, this is like, what? The second time I've used this GIF?

Man, these past few days have been an enjoyable experience for me. I don't even know where to begin! Oh, wait… I actually do. I think it’s best for me to break it all down day by day.

Friday

As previously mentioned, Thursday night marked the start of the mini-hiatus because Mom and I had to make sure we could catch our 6:55 AM flight to Nashville on time. Needless to say, we only got a few hours of sleep; however, thanks to us getting the caffeine from our colas and trying to nap on the plane, we were awake enough to explore the downtown Nashville area.

As you may have guessed, Nashville is a popular place for country music and a lot of the attractions in the Lower Broadway area is full of clubs and honky-tory bars. No matter where you go, day or night, there is always a bar where people perform country music live for the patrons.

Nashville also happens to be the place that harbors the Johnny Cash Museum, which was the first stop of the weekend.

As you can tell from the first image, this artifact was made entirely out of steel that was salvaged from the destroyed World Trade Center, which is where the One World Trade Center/Freedom Tower currently stands. The second image is a piece of memorabilia: the Martin D-35 guitar Johnny Cash used when he was alive as it was his favorite Martin guitar to play on stage for two decades.

Speaking of country music, Nashville had recently hosted this year's CMA Music Festival and Garth Brooks took home the award for Entertainer of the Year. I wasn't even sure if it was coincidental or not since this weekend in Tennessee was primarily about his concert, but I'll get on that later. In the meantime, another neat place we checked out was the Country Music Hall of Fame… well, specifically some of the gift shops.

Yes, one of the gift shops has a wall filled with nothing but records from all kinds of country artists.

Outside of the country-related sights, we also checked out a couple more places within the Nashville area like a local candy store called the Candy Kitchen. Everywhere you look, there were all kinds of store-brand and local candy, caramel apples, fudge, ice cream, etc. Combine that with the aroma of pure sugar and you end up either feeling like you've gone to candy heaven or your teeth ended up rotting because of how many sweets this place had.

They even have giant ass Dum Dum lollipops for crying out loud! Like, how the hell are you supposed to eat something that huge?!

Later that afternoon, we weren't sure what to do in Nashville between the bars, party tractors, and what not, mostly because we weren’t in the mood to check everything out due to the little amount of sleep we got. As a result, we did a bit of online searching and found a pretty cool mall not far from the state's capital.

Yep. That's right. That is what this mall is called. The name alone was enough to give me Sonic vibes and I'm certain y'all know why. Hell, they even had three parking lots each labeled emerald, gold, and ruby; I lowkey wished they added four more parking lots and have them named after sapphire, amethyst, diamond, and aquamarine just so it can keep reminding me of Sonic, you know? Specifically the seven Chaos Emeralds? ...*coughs*...

Anyways, that's kinda how Mom and I spent the rest of our Friday: having dinner at the Cheesecake Factory and poking at some shops they had before returning to Nashville to see what it was like at night. I will say this right now: they fucking love partying.

Saturday

The next day of the trip was mostly spent driving up to Knoxville for the Garth Brooks concert, which I was able to get a decent number of photos because it was crazy. When Mom got the tickets, she said it was going to be a stadium concert and I thought it was going to be similar to Taylor Swift's concert at Gillette Stadium in terms of crowds, but holy shit! Was I wrong! When you've got a college football stadium filled with 84,000 people attending, it's bound to get fucking cramped, so comparing both stadium tours, this easily takes the cake for the wildest concert I've ever been to thus far. Nevertheless, I still managed to have fun.

Because the Tumblr app—as far as I know—only allows 10 photos per post, I decided to condense some of my favorite photos I've taken for the rest of the trip into collages to try and satisfy the limit, but it appears I may have made more collages than I anticipated, so the rest of this post will be typed via laptop. To kick off the series of collages, here are some of my favorites pictures I’ve taken of Garth.

Sunday

Sunday was the last day of our weekend in Tennessee, so having done the stuff mentioned above, how did we spend the majority of yesterday? By driving through Sevierville and Pigeon Forge, with the latter being the home of Dollywood!

Before going on this trip, Mom and I discovered Dollywood wasn't far away from Knoxville, the same town where the concert at the University of Tennessee was held. She tried to figure out ways to make additional plans to go to Dollywood to see their Christmas traditions, but we ultimately chose to save it for another time because we wanted to make sure we arrived at the airport early enough to board.

On that note, what proved to be the icing on the cake for this trip was what Mom would call a happy accident: viewing the Great Smoky Mountain Range.

The collage with the light blue background is a portion of the several photos I've taken of the Great Smokies as we were driving through a road in Sevierville that offered wonderful views from the distance. The one with a wooden background is during our trek through the mountain range; on top of the photo of the national park sign, we made a few stops along the way because those stops had some marvelous views.

And now comes the pièce de résistance. The happy accident of this trip. While taking pictures of the views at the first stop, we noticed some buildings down below; a couple of them resembled hotels, but we weren't sure what the rest were. As we were leaving the mountains, we immediately entered what we saw from above: Gatlinburg.

We didn't take a lot of pictures there because we were too mesmerized with what Gatlinburg had to offer as we were driving through: shops, an aquarium, museums, ski lifts, hiking, and so on. Everywhere we looked, there was nothing but endless entertainment, just like Pigeon Forge! They are even all decorated for the Christmas season, and honestly, I definitely wouldn't mind spending Christmas in Gatlinburg in the foreseeable future. Renting a cabin, seeing what the resort has to offer, my sisters and brother-in-law joining with Mom, my brothers, and myself to celebrate the holidays. That would be super amazing. ☺️

Unfortunately, as of August 20th, over 300 people have died and 633,010 people are staying in 2,971 relief camps due to flooding. Fisherman and other locals alongside the Army, Air Force, Navy,Coast Guard, and NDRF teams have rescued 38,000 flood-affected people in the last 3 days alone. 

It goes without saying that the road to recovery ahead is long and tiresome. Many of those rescued have lost their livelihood, and most do not have a home to go back to when they leave the relief camps. Indigenous communities living in districts like Wayanad will be some of the hardest hit. Food shortage will be a worrying reality. Kerala’s thriving and pivotal tourist business will be set back detrimentally. Stagnant flood water will ultimately lead to numerous diseases that need to be controlled. The state will need to rebuild lost infrastructure promptly. Citing the reported losses and future costs, the Chief Minister of Kerala has requested the Central Government for 19,500 cr/195,000,000,000 INR (roughly 3 billion USD) to assist in the rehabilitation. Canada National Parks: Banff, Yoho, & More!

BANFF NATIONAL PARK

Banff National Park is an all-time favorite destination for us. The park has incredibly beautiful lakes and mountains, is close to multiple other incredible national parks (Yoho, Jasper), and has the lovely city of Banff. Banff is especially good for amazing views without much effort -- versus, say, Glacier National Park which is much better seen through its epic hikes.

The city of Banff itself looks like a European alpine village surrounded by jaw-dropping mountains, and it is a very comfortable place to stay – great food, nice and plentiful accommodations, and a shuttle that conveniently goes through town. It felt fairly similar to Jackson, WY – the billionaire-fueled resort town by Grand Teton National Park. We highly recommend staying in Banff and using it as your jumping-off point to any of the beautiful destinations in the area – we spent one night in Banff and two nights by Lake Louise and definitely preferred the former for better accommodations, food, and overall value for money.

WHAT TO DO (our favorites, starting with our most recommended)

1. Day Trip to Lake Louise (see our Lake Louise blog post for much more information)

a. What: A lovely lake that is the most famous attraction in Banff National Park, and has some wonderful hikes, teahouses nestled in the mountains, and the beautiful Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. If you have half a day and are willing to hike about 13 miles, we REALLY recommend the teahouses hike. While you’re in the area, visit stunning Moraine Lake nearby as well!

b. Where: About 40 minutes’ drive from downtown Banff

c. What else to know:

Food and accommodation options in the Lake Louise area are limited, so it can be nice to stay in Banff for your entire trip and drive out to places like Lake Louise and Yoho National Park for day trips. This adds driving time but we think it is worth it.

Parking at Lake Louise can be very challenging – it is recommended to get there early or consider making a Banff shuttle reservation to get to and from the lake. We read somewhere that you can get your Lake Louise parking validated if you eat lunch at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise (we read it’s best to get a reservation at the hotel as it gets crowded). That said, when we visited on the Wednesday after Labor Day, there was plenty of parking both in the morning and the afternoon, and it seemed easy to pay at one of the walk-up pay stations in the parking lot.

2. Half-Day Trip to Yoho National Park (see our Yoho blog post for more information)

c. What else to know: Parking can be hard to find and is paid in most parts of town; also, driving can get very jammed (as we experienced on Labor Day). There is a free parking lot by the train station that we were told usually has spots and is about a 10 min walk from downtown. We opted to take the ROAM shuttle around as it was incredibly convenient (a day pass costs CAD$5 per person; our hotel gave us day passes for free)

5. Drive the Icefields Parkway from Banff to Jasper

a. What: A very scenic drive 

b. Why: It has many, many glaciers, icefields, glacial lakes, and otherwise impressive scenery

c. What else to know:

Even if you don’t have time for the whole drive, Bow Lake and Peyto Lake are early in the drive and very worthwhile to visit. If you have more time, the Columbia Icefield is amazing – you can literally walk right up to a glacier. Just check ahead of time that things are open – Peyto Lake was unexpectedly closed during our visit!

The entire drive from Banff to Jasper takes about 3 hours on a one-lane road. When I did this previously, a car accident caused a 3+ hour delay and we waited in an extremely long line of cars on the road. Make sure you have plenty of fuel before you get started and other preparations in case you get stuck on the road (snacks, warm clothes, etc.)

6. Hike Tunnel Mountain in Banff (~3km hike roundtrip, moderate)

a. What: This hike is a short but steep incline up to lovely views of the city of Banff.

b. Why: The views are great, and it’s a great starter hike to see the town and get into hiking mode.

c. Where: Just a few minutes’ drive from downtown Banff

d. How: Search for Tunnel Mountain in Google Maps – you’ll drive partway up the mountain and find a small parking lot. We visited in the afternoon on Labor Day and were able to find a spot immediately.

e. What else to know: If the sun is out, it can feel really hot during the hike – especially given the continuous incline – but it is cold and windy at the top, so take a jacket! There are plenty of good views to sit amongst the rocks or on the ground and have a snack at the top.

7. Drive through Kootenay National Park 

This is a national park that happened to be on our drive from Kalispell (near Glacier National Park) to Banff. The scenic drive through the park is exceptionally beautiful ��� gorgeous rivers, forests, and of course the Rocky Mountains. Going-to-the-Sun Road is one of Glacier’s main attractions, and we thought this drive was at least as nice.

We didn’t have time to stop at any of the attractions and aren’t sure if they would be worth the time (at least in comparison to all the things to do in nearby Banff National Park).

Note: There is no cell phone coverage on virtually the entire drive to Kootenay!

NOTABLE STUFF WE DIDN’T DO

1.Hiking at Johnston Canyon

a.       What: There are a couple of miles of trails to a well-known waterfall and a hike to the Ink Pots (water pools) that we read are incredible

b.       Why: It’s one of the top recommended attractions in/near the town of Banff!

c.       How: Map to Johnston Canyon in Google maps; it’s located between Lake Louise and Banff

d.       What else to know: The entire canyon was closed on Labor Day; when we arrived a ranger told us there had been an accident at the site that morning. Try to check that the Canyon is going before your visit.

2. Ride the Sulphur Mountain Gondola

a.       What: An expensive gondola ride to a high viewpoint in Banff (you can get a slight discount by booking online in advance or going after 5PM)

b.       What else to know: You can alternately take a steep hike up to the viewpoint, but Google and AllTrails reviews indicate the intensity of the hike may not be worth it, especially if you can take the gondola instead. We considered doing this but didn’t have time and didn’t want to take a potentially crowded gondola during the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, I took the gondola on a previous visit to Banff and have no recollection of it, so we figured it may not be worth the price.

 WHERE TO EAT (VEGETARIAN, OF COURSE)

We’re admittedly not the most informed on this, as we only stayed in the city of Banff for one night and otherwise ate mostly simple sandwiches that we made ourselves. However, on a previous visit to Banff, I recall the food downtown being really excellent.

One place we must recommend is Nourish Café, a vegetarian café (also very vegan-friendly) that has the most incredible food. We LOVED the mushroom ravioli in coconut sauce and thought the nachos and kimchi burger were also very good. We can’t wait to return to try more of their menu items.

We also adored Saffron for Indian food – the bhindi masala was out of this world and the dal tadka was also excellent.

By Lake Louise, the food options were SUPER limited (there were like 3 places open for dinner), but we were able to get a pretty good vegan pizza one night at Timberwolf Pizza, located inside the Lake Louise Inn. We were impressed that they had vegan cheese and that the pizza tasted pretty good!

 WHERE TO STAY

Given uncertainty around whether we would be allowed to cross the international border due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we booked our accommodations on the day we entered Canada. This meant a lot of options were booked out, and we didn’t have a ton of time to do research.

Banff: We loved the Rimrock Resort Hotel. It was admittedly much more luxurious than we were expecting or aiming for. The facility is gorgeous and customer service was excellent, especially helpful with managing the COVID tests that Canadian border patrol mandated we take during our visit. The location is right by the Sulphur Mountain Gondola and is easily accessible to town via the shuttle, which stops right in front of the hotel. The only downside: it is very expensive!

Lake Louise: We would have loved to stay at the infamous Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, but it was booked out. We stayed instead at the nearby Paradise Lodge and were decidedly not impressed for how expensive it was – next time, if not the Fairmont Chateau then we will stay in Banff and drive out to Lake Louise. Note: There is also a very famous Fairmont hotel in Banff, and there is a fun podcast episode on the National Park After Dark podcast about ghost stories in this hotel.

Camping: We didn’t have a chance to look into camping options but would have loved to try this given how scenic the whole area is. Next time!

 LOGISTICS

Crossing the Border: US >> CAN

Crossing the border wasn’t the easiest process due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We had to:

1.       Register our anticipated border crossing online (or on a Canadian app) within 72 hours of our visit, no sooner. This entailed determining approximately what time and which city we would be crossing at, which required advanced planning.

2.       Take a COVID-19 diagnostic PCR test and receive results within 72 hours of our visit. We were able to book NAAT PCR tests (promised TAT is 24 hours, ours completed in under an hour) at a Walgreens in Montana – tests were in very short supply, so we woke up early 2 days before our desired testing date to snag testing slots as soon as they were released.

3.       Provide our passports and COVID-19 vaccination cards at the border: We had to provide the physical evidence, despite having uploaded images of the cards during our registration as well.

4.       Complete a take-home COVID-19 swab within 24 hrs of arrival: The Canadian border patrol agent informed us we were randomly selected to do this, and gave us VERY detailed written instructions that warned of possible fines and imprisonment for not completing the requirements. In brief, the take-home tests were much more involved than the U.S. Labcorp Pixel take-home test: we had to book a virtual appointment with a contracted testing company and meet with their agent over Microsoft TEAMS to walk us through self-administration of the nasal swab. This required Internet (not a given in the Canadian Rockies, so we were glad to be staying in a nice hotel in Banff) AND an ability to drop off the completed swabs to FedEx or schedule a pickup (which we delegated to our wonderfully helpful hotel), and overall took about 90 minutes of our time during our ~3 day trip to the Banff area. It wasn’t our favorite use of time, but we were very impressed by the Canadian government’s logistical prowess, especially when we received our test results within 72 hours of doing the swab!

Note: Crossing the border back to the U.S. was a very different experience. All we had to do was answer a few simple questions and show our passports. No COVID due diligence whatsoever.

 Entering Canada from the U.S.

A few helpful things to know:

1.       Pause and change your vehicle’s settings to display speeds in km instead of miles. Do this in Waze as well (Google maps seemed to automatically adjust to km). This will help you to follow local speed limits.

2.       Check if your car insurance covers you in Canada. Ours (Geico) has a note on its website that it does cover you for short visits to Canada but not long-term stays (>6 months).

 Entry Fees to Canada National Parks

You can purchase an annual family pass for approximately CAD $140 or a day pass for CAD $10 per person, valid until 4PM on the following day. The pass includes admission to all Canada National Parks. We opted for day passes for 3 days (CAD $60 for the two of us), lasting us from when we stopped at the ticket booth at the entrance to Kootenay National Park (Monday around 10AM) to Thursday at 4PM. We were given a timestamped pass to tape to our car’s dashboard.
