Path of least resistance
Kyle loves the philosophical maxims I tell to maintain perspective in the face of challenges in the field and with customers. He says it’s because they have a calming effect that minimize the anxiety caused by [insurmountable obstacles]. I appreciate, nay, admire his naïve honesty, and how everything he does comes from the heart. The way he ‘feels’ is akin to way I ‘operate’ – that is, one by emotion and the other by logic. These little gems help us achieve a learned understanding of one another.
In a tip of the hat to Kyle, below are some of his favorites.
1. Nothing was ever accomplished by panicking.
The Adaptability profile in Gallup strengths states that Adaptable people tend to live in the moment, take things as they come, and create the future one choice at a time. I tell Kyle we must expect the inevitable sudden requests from clients and unforeseen detours, and emphasize the importance of staying focused and productive when demands pull us in many different directions at once.
2. It’s okay to fail safely. There’s no mistake that can’t be fixed.
3. Do not fear your mistakes, only the inability to correct them.
These two are generally given together – one to reinforce the idea that no one is punished for taking the initiative, and the other to remind us to learn what works and do better in the future.
4. Let’s emphasize the proper outcome, doing what’s expected isn’t that impressive.
Hotel guests expect a smooth check-in and a clean room. Landscape customers want neat turf and a weedless flower bed. Our clinic patients demand a proper diagnosis and competent treatment – all basic expectations. There is no way we win the customer by highlighting these fundamentals. Instead, it is our differentiators, the “above and beyond” and the “gold medal plays,” that impress.
5. Take the path of least resistance.
Not to be confused with laziness or do only what is necessary, the path of least resistance offers the highest return for the lowest risk. Returns in the form of customer satisfaction, revenue dollars, and/or relationship building; while risks are energy expended, dollars spent, and time.
6. For every argument we win, we lose that customer.
This is adapted from Carnegie, and very accurately describes why the customer is always right, even if they’re not. I don’t suggest folks dehumanize themselves for the sake of placating an objectionable situation, but it is why I emphasize the use of “here’s what I can do for you [insert name… always use their name].”
7. People don’t want to be sold, but they will buy good feelings and solutions to problems.
Not one I use with Kyle often given his high EQ and incredible expertise. Taken from a customer service book I read years ago; it is the easiest way I found to remove fear from those who quiver at the very utterance of the word “sales.” Not everyone is afforded the training to learn the X’s and O’s of the sales playbook, but with a good attitude and decent knowledge of our service, customers will buy what we’re selling.
8. If you want to be taken seriously, speed of response is not an option.
More for me than any customer related axiom, and “speed” is a relative term, but Kyle, bro, don’t leave me hanging on that text message.

DC Collaborative Internship Recap
Submitted by Lauren Walker
May 27, 2021
My name is Lauren Walker (she/her/hers), the Spring 2021 Membership & Collective Impact Intern with the DC Collaborative. I graduated from the University of Richmond (Richmond, VA) in May 2019 with my B.A. in International Studies. I come from a performing arts background; I started out playing piano, and eventually switched to flute, which I continue to play. As a result of my musical training, instrumental instruction is an arts discipline that is very near and dear to me. I am based in Germantown, MD, about 25 miles outside of Washington, DC.
As the Membership & Collective Impact Intern, most of my work was split between assisting with membership services, and with the Collective Impact initiative Any Given Child DC. Within my work with membership tasks, I was able to sit in on meetings with potential members, teaching artists/practitioners, and assist with the preparation and note-taking for the ‘advocacy edition’ of the annual membership meeting in April. My work with membership services also involved drafting messaging that was sent out to member organizations.
Aside from tasks involving DC Collaborative’s membership, I spent a large amount of time providing support for Any Given Child DC (AGC DC). DC Collaborative serves as the “backbone organization” for AGC DC, and serves a unique role in providing support and guiding the strategy of the initiative. One of my first projects as an intern was helping put together the first edition of the Collective Impact newsletter. Additionally, I regularly attended meetings for the AGC DC Steering Committee, and also had the opportunity to attend subcommittee meetings. One of the projects that I found the most interesting was working on the AGC DC glossary. Aside from attending meetings, I also had the opportunity to do research on collective impact resources, and resources related to justice, equity, and anti-racism, the latter of which were included in the AGC DC glossary site.
Throughout my internship, I was able to relearn the importance of communication. Given that all staff members worked from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this importance became even more prominent. I was also able to learn about new aspects of governance. Being part of a smaller team enabled me to get a closer look at the elements that go into managing both arts organizations and nonprofits. The aspect of governance was also present throughout collective impact. Making sure that all of the stakeholders in collective impact are on the same page is an integral task, which was evident through learning more about AGC DC. Lastly, I was able to learn more about the current arts/humanities landscape in Washington, DC. Despite having lived in the D.C. metropolitan area for most of my life, I was unaware of the amount of community-based organizations that work to provide artistic and cultural opportunities to both students and the general public.
Starting Fall 2021, I will be pursuing my Masters in Arts Management at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. In the future, I hope to do work that involves some type of artistic/cultural diplomacy, or something that involves arts and community/economic development. I believe that my experience interning at the DC Collaborative will be very valuable, especially in regards to making sure that equity and community voices are always centralized.

Clara Ward
Clara Ward (April 21, 1924 – January 16, 1973) was an American gospel artist who achieved great artistic and commercial success in the 1940s and 1950s, as leader of The Famous Ward Singers.
A gifted singer and arranger, Ward adopted the lead-switching style, previously used primarily by male gospel quartets, creating opportunities for spontaneous improvisation and vamping by each member of the group, while giving virtuoso singers such as Marion Williams the opportunity to perform the lead vocal in songs such as "Surely, God Is Able" (among the first million-selling gospel hits), "How I Got Over" and "Packin' Up".
Career
Clara Ward's mother, Gertrude Ward (1901–1981), founded the Ward Singers in 1931 as a family group, then called, variously, The Consecrated Gospel Singers or The Ward Trio, consisting of herself, her youngest daughter Clara, and her elder daughter, Willarene ("Willa").
Clara Ward recorded her first solo song in 1940, and continued accompanying the Ward Gospel Trio, thereafter.
The Ward Singers began touring nationally in 1943, following a memorable appearance at the National Baptist Convention held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, earlier that year. Henrietta Waddy joined the group in 1947, after Willa Ward retired. Waddy brought to the group a "rougher" alto sound and the enthusiastic stage manners learned from her South Carolina church background. The group's performance style, such as the mimed packing of suitcases as part of the song "Packin' Up", condemned by some gospel music purists as "clowning", was wildly popular with their audiences.
The addition of Marion Williams, who arose of the Miami, Florida Pentecostal tradition brought to the group a powerful singer with a preternaturally broad range, able to reach the highest registers of the soprano range without losing either purity or volume, with the added ability to descend "growling low notes" in the style of a country preacher. Williams' singing style helped make the group nationally popular when they began recording in 1948.
In 1949, the Ward Singers toured from Philadelphia to California in their new Cadillac, appeared on national television programs, and recorded for the Miltone Record Company of Los Angeles. The Miltone recordings were purchased in a multi-artist package by Gotham Record Company, which had moved to Philadelphia. Gotham's Irv Ballen recorded some new Ward material, including "Surely God Is Able", and some of the Ward Singers' Gotham recordings were transferred to Savoy Record Company in Newark, New Jersey to settle a contract dispute. When Savoy began contracting with the Ward Singers for new recordings in the 1950s, they were primarily recorded and engineered in Bergen County, New Jersey, by Rudy Van Gelder.
In 1950, Clara Ward and the Famous Ward Singers of Philadelphia made their first Carnegie Hall appearance on a gospel program titled Negro Music Festival, produced by gospel music pioneer, Joe Bostic, sharing the stage with Mahalia Jackson, appearing at the famed venue for Bostic's program in 1952, as well.
Gertrude Ward created a booking agency for gospel acts, sponsored tours under the name "The Ward Gospel Cavalcade", established a publishing house for gospel music, and wrote an instructional manual for churches, detailing how to promote gospel programs. Gertrude created and managed a second group, "The Clara Ward Specials", to accompany the Ward Singers. Although as musical director of the Ward franchise, Clara was willing to share the spotlight with her talented co-singers, she and her mother were allegedly reticent about sharing the group's financial rewards with other members, as well. According to Willa Ward's biography of Clara Ward, with the exception of Gertrude and Clara, Willa and other members of the group were grossly underpaid. In addition, their meager earnings were further reduced as Gertrude and Clara provided the group's housing and charged them for it. Accordingly, stars such as Marion Williams and Frances Steadman not only had to accept second billing and lesser pay for their work, but pay their employers rent out of their earnings.
Williams left the group in 1958, when her demand for a raise and reimbursement for hotel expenses was rejected. She was followed shortly thereafter by the rest of the group—Henrietta Waddy, Esther Ford, Frances Steadman and Kitty Parham—who formed a new group, "The Stars of Faith". Their departure marked the end of the glory days for the Ward Singers, who later alienated much of their churchgoing audience by performing in Las Vegas, nightclubs, and other secular venues in the 1960s. By this time, gospel singer Albertina Walker formed her group, The Caravans, in 1952, following the advice of her mentor, gospel music great Mahalia Jackson, and their group began to grow in popularity.
In 1963, Clara Ward was the second gospel singer to sing gospel songs on Broadway in Langston Hughes' play Tambourines To Glory(The first being her former group members, which were known as the Stars of Faith, which starred Langston Hughes in the first Gospel stage play and first play that featured an all black cast to be produced on Broadway, The Black Nativity.). She was also the play's musical director.
While performing at the Castaways Lounge in Miami Beach, Florida, in the 1960s, Clara collapsed and was rushed to a local hospital. Told that, if she recovered, she would never sing or walk again, Gertrude Ward telephoned Mother Dabney, a spiritual healer in Philadelphia, PA, and Clara miraculously was restored to health. Details of Clara's recovery were reported in the Gospel News Journal, published by Marvin Bunton. Clara later recounted this experience in a church service at the Wayside Chapel in Sydney, Australia. This testimony was released on an LP issued on the WARD label along with Clara singing "The Lord's Prayer" and other Ward musical selections.
During the group's heyday, however, it was both widely popular and highly influential, emphasizing glamor—traveling in over-sized Cadillacs, preferring sequined gowns to choir robes, and wearing wigs and jewelry that more conservative churchgoing women considered too worldly—while bringing Gertrude Ward's shrewd entrepreneurial sense to the gospel music business at large. Though Gertrude was a savvy negotiator, her understanding of the value of music copyrights was limited. According to Willa Ward, Gertrude was misled into believing that songwriting royalties from Clara's compositions would be minimal and sold them. In her book, Willa has stated that the music was, eventually, controlled by of Herman Lubinsky, founder of Savoy Records (who was known for his allegedly unscrupulous exploitation of recording artists), and became owned by Planemar Music Company.
Clara Ward was the first gospel singer to sing with a 100-piece symphony orchestra in the 1960s. They recorded an album together on the Verve label, V-5019, The Heart, The Faith, The Soul of Clara Ward, and the Ward Singers performed their music live in Philadelphia with the city's legendary symphony and the Golden Voices Ensemble.
Though Clara Ward did not regularly sing secular music as a soloist or with her groups, she did sing backup for pop artists with her sister Willa's background group, most notably on Dee Dee Sharp's smash hit, 'Mashed Potato Time", which reached #2 on Billboard's pop chart in 1962. In 1969, she recorded an album for Capitol Records, Soul and Inspiration, consisting of pop songs from Broadway plays, Hollywood movies and the Jimmy Radcliffe song of hope "If You Wanna Change The World". This album was later reissued on the Capitol's budget Pickwick label minus one track. In the same year, she recorded an album in Copenhagen, Denmark on the Philips label, Walk A Mile In My Shoes, which included the pop title song, other pop songs (such as "California Dreaming") and a few gospel songs. She also recorded an album for MGM/Verve, Hang Your Tears Out To Dry, which included country and Western, blues/folk, pop and an arrangement of the Beatles' hit song, "Help". Her 1972 album Uplifting on United Artists, produced by Nikolas Venet and Sam Alexander, included a stunning interpretation of Bill Wither's pop hit "Lean On Me" and a rearrangement of the Soul Stirrer's 1950's recording of "Thank You, Jesus". Also in 1972 Ward, because she was under exclusive contract to United Artists at this time, provided vocals for a Canned Heat's album The New Age, on the ballad "Lookin' For My Rainbow"; it was released on that album and as a single 45 rpm record.
In 1968, Clara Ward and her singers toured Vietnam at the request of the U.S. State Department and the U.S.O. It was a very popular war-time tour supported by recorded radio broadcasts of the Ward Singers on U.S. Armed Forces Radio. The Ward Singers narrowly missed death when their hotel in Vietnam was bombed and several guests died. However, Clara was never afraid, as because she believed she was bringing joy, consolation, and a religious message to soldiers, many of whom would not return home alive, and they showed their appreciation and enthusiasm for her style of gospel music. When asked during a TV interview what was her favorite concert, Clara responded that these tours in Vietnam during the war were her favorite. She was invited back to Vietnam by U.S.O. in 1969 for several more months. These war-time tours were filmed and all the Ward Singers were given special certificates of recognition by the U.S. Army. The U.S.O did not pay a salary to entertainers, but, following the tours, the Ward Singers went to Japan each year for commercial concerts and released LPs in Japan to coincide with these tours.
Clara Ward co-starred in the Hollywood movie A Time to Sing, starring Hank Williams, Jr., Shelley Fabares, Ed Begley, and D'Urville Martin. She was cast as a waitress in a Nashville, Tennessee cafeteria who inspires a young singer, played by Hank Williams, Jr., to pursue his dream of becoming a Country & Western recording artist. There are also several scenes of the Clara Ward Singers performing gospel songs. This movie was released by MGM in 1968 and Clara's picture appears on lobby cards and other movie advertisements. Other movie appearances include Its Your Thing, starring the Isley Brothers, and Spree, also known as Night Time In Las Vegas.
The late 1960s and early 1970s were an extremely busy and successful time for the Clara Ward Singers. The summer months usually found them at the Golden Horseshoe Club, in Anaheim, California's Disneyland, or touring colleges across the United States. They also toured in Australia, Japan, Europe, Indonesia, and Thailand. They had a one-day TV special in London, England. They were in constant demand on American television programs and appeared on The Mike Douglas Show over a dozen times. They appeared on Oral Roberts' Country Roads TV special, later released as a soundtrack album. Clara continued to perform at her mother's church, the Miracle Temple of Faith for All People in Los Angeles, California, as well as at Victory Baptist Church. Her mother, Gertrude Ward, also had a popular religious radio program in the Los Angeles market.
Personal life
Despite her career success, Ward's life was an unhappy one. Financial hardships caused her and her family to move 19 times before her adulthood. Sexually abused in childhood by a cousin, and relentlessly driven as prime breadwinner by her mother throughout her life, Clara's life was one of constant work and little joy. According to her sister, Willa, Gertrude Ward recognized Clara's exceptional musical ability when Clara was a child, and controlled and manipulated her throughout her life. In her biography of Clara, Willa attests that Gertrude worked to prevent Clara from forming any romantic attachments. Although Clara eloped as a teenager (at age 17 in 1941), her mother forced her to tour and the strain caused the always frail Clara to have a miscarriage. Her marriage ended after only one year. Willa describes Clara as explaining her occasional lesbian encounters as the sexual expression likely to escape her mother's notice. Her only real happiness seems to have come from her longtime romance with Rev. C. L. Franklin (with whom the Ward groups extensively toured), the famous Detroit-based preacher and father of the legendary Aretha Franklin.
Death
Ward's poor health forced her to retire in the early 1970s. She died after two strokes in 1973. Aretha Franklin and Rev. C. L. Franklin sang at her funeral in Philadelphia in 1973; Marion Williams sang at her second memorial service held days later in Los Angeles, California.
Clara Ward is interred in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.
Legacy
In 1977, Ward was honored posthumously at the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York City and her surviving sister, Willa, accepted the award in her honor.
In July 1998, in recognition of her status as one of the most famous and loved gospel singers in the world, the United States Postal Service issued a 32-cent stamp with her image. The stamp can still be purchased with a CD and other gospel singers' stamps at www.usps.com.
Ward's beautiful alto (with a distinctly nasal tone) in gospel songs and the Methodist hymns of the 18th century continues to delight music lovers. She had a marked influence on later singers, such as her protegee Aretha Franklin, who adopted her moan for secular songs and who saluted Ward in Amazing Grace, the gospel album she made with James Cleveland in the early 1970s.

Trip of Crazy, Days 13-15
So I never finished talking about my long trip...from March...I keep meaning to finish stuff like this and then I get intensely embarrassed that I haven't yet and then I put it off even more...it's a viscious cycle. Anyway, here is the last big prose post from my spring trip. There will be at least one more post after this which will be pictures.
Day 13 - Omaha, NE
So this place was basically everything I was expecting and more and I was delighted. It's the largest city in the state and it still felt very much like a sleepy small town that someone had just blown up to a large scale. I was there on a Wednesday but it reminded me a lot of the time I visited Chattanooga (Tennessee) on a Sunday - basically, it reminded me of a city in the South on a Sunday, when everything is closed and there are no people out. Except it was a lot more beautiful than Chattanooga, both in architecture and in nature. I would absolutely love to go back there and this is one of those rare cities where I actually wouldn't hate living. I got an absolutely gorgeous breakfast in a near-empty diner and the first part of the day walking the streets was downright eerie at times as I saw few cars and fewer people.
I walked up to the river, stopping in at the city's visitor center along the way, not because I'm one for city visitor centers (I'm not) but because there was a geocache there. I took what I think was some kind of premiere walking trail in the heart of the city, but it was all but deserted, and frankly I liked it that way. It was a nice change from the hustle and bustle of a lot of the other places I'd been on this trip. I stumbled upon some kind of military memorial along the walkway before coming to a wide open area with some benches that were safely above the river but close enough to the water to enjoy the view. I stopped in at the National Park Service visitor center, which was small but informative. If I ever become a billionaire and have the time and money, I'm checking out more of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.
The sky was really starting to darken as I approached the footbridge that crossed the river into Iowa, but I didn't let that deter me: there was a geocache juuuuust on the Idaho side in the center of the bridge, and that was my goal. I managed to get to the middle and find the cache with very little time to spare - I retreated back down to the Nebraska side and by the time I got to the bus stop closest to the bridge it was raining, so I spent the afternoon at the library. The weather cleared in time for me to go get dinner and that was that.
Day 14 - Chicago, IL
This was the third I believe? time I've ever been to Chicago (all single-day instances, and I'm including the first time I hit Chicago on this trip!) so I didn't spend too much time in Chicago - I jetted up to Kenosha, Wisconsin for basically the whole morning. Nothing too exciting happened since it was raining, so I didn't get very far - but I think I went a decent way towards convincing my Lyft driver to go on random adventures like I've been doing. I got to see some dinosaurs - yeah, they were just sculptures or whatever, but a dinosaur is a dinosaur. Also, the train I took to and from Kenosha had this nifty second level that gave you a really good view of the whole train car, and on the way up I couldn't figure out how for the life of me people had gotten up there - fortunately on the way back down to Chicago I found the stairs and enjoyed myself a bird's-eye view of, well, nothing in particular, but it's the principle of the thing. I like being able to see everything.
I basically spent the rest of the afternoon after I got back to Chicago striking out on geocaches in various ways, but I went in a different direction than normal and it was nice to see a part of the city I hadn't before.
Day 15 - Pittsburgh, PA
This was the last day and the last city of my trip. I visited a friend there a few years back, but it's a big city, so everywhere I went this day was new to me anyway. And I didn't go far, since it was a shorter day (meaning my bus was leaving earlier than normal), but it was beautiful out, so I spent as much of it as I could out and about. I don't know if this was real or just my imagination, but it really did feel a lot more like home than the other places, and it was a nice feeling after being away for so long.
I stopped by a beautiful fountain and saw two beautiful parks and was reminded that everything (yes, everything) in that city is named after Andrew Carnegie lol. My trip thus ended on a lazy day - a fitting way to end such a long trip I think.
I'll be posting pics probably/hopefully later this week if you want to keep an eye out! And after that I'll tell you all about Massachusetts...dun dun dunnn.
#personal#2017 trip of crazy#Omaha#Chicago#Pittsburgh#I hope I'm not annoying anyone with this stuff but I guess that's what the unfollow button is for anyway

Bilderberg Group meets just outside of DC as Deep State steps up war on Trump. Here’s the attendee list.
Photo: Public Domain
Top global political and business leaders of the Bilderberg Group will meet just miles from the White House this week, as “Deep State” actions to take down President Donald Trump grow more intense.
“The Bilderberg Group meeting in Chantilly, Virginia, will attract 131 elites on Thursday – from politicians and bankers to business titans and European royalty,” The Daily Mail reports. “They will discuss transatlantic relations, the future of the European Union and ‘a progress report’ on the Trump administration behind closed doors at the four-day meeting.”
It has not been revealed what the “progress report” on Trump means. Chantilly, in suburban D.C., is 30 miles from Washington.
Among those participating in this year’s Bilderberg Group meeting are Trump’s Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, Trump’s National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, Trump advisers Peter Thiel and David Petraeus, U.S. Senator Lindsay Graham and Obama CIA Director John Brennan.
The meeting comes as leaks from within the U.S. government’s security community, intended to cripple President Trump, worsen.
“At least 180 federal employees have signed up for a workshop next weekend, where experts will offer advice on workers’ rights and how they can express civil disobedience,” former Clinton administration Labor Secretary Robert Reich gleefully notes.
“Federal workers are in regular consultation with recently departed Obama-era political appointees about what they can do to push back against the new president’s initiatives…,” Reich notes, “…The State Department has emerged as the nexus of opposition to Trump’s refugee policy, in part because it has an official dissent channel where Foreign Service employees can register opposition without fear of reprisals. The channel, formed in 1971, has been used to raise policy objections to the Vietnam War and other conflicts. Several hundred employees signed the dissent cable objecting to Trump’s refugee policy.”
