*Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja, Vamsee, Abhishek Agarwal Arts’ Pan Indian Film Tiger Nageswara Rao’s Fierce & Majestic First Look Launched*
Link: https://youtu.be/EDh1FDuxiX8
The Kashmir Files, Karthikeya 2, and now Tiger Nageswara Rao. Abhishek Agarwal Arts which delivered blockbusters at the Pan India level is coming up with yet another Pan India project Tiger Nageswara Rao with Mass Maharaja who is familiar to the south as well as the north audience playing the titular role. Directed by Vamsee and produced grandly by Abhishek Agarwal of Abhishek Agarwal Arts, the promotions of the movie kick-start in a first-of-its-kind manner with the makers launching the fierce and majestic first-look poster and intriguing concept video on the iconic Havelock Bridge (Godavari) in Rajahmundry. They hired a train for the grand first-look launch event.
Ravi Teja looks like a ferocious tiger and roars like a tiger in the first-look poster that sees him in a rugged get-up with a thick beard. It’s scary to stare into his eyes, though it’s just a poster. He can be seen behind bars. The concept poster is meant to introduce the world of Tiger Nageswara Rao. It is articulated strikingly with voiceovers of five different superstars in five different languages. While Venkatesh gave voiceover for the Telugu version, John Abraham, Shiva Rajkumar, Karthi, and Dulquer Salmaan introduced the world of Tiger Nageswara Rao in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, and Malayalam languages respectively.
As mentioned in the beginning of the video, the story is inspired by true rumours. “It was the 70s. A small village in the coastal region of the Bay of Bengal... Even the darkness that scares the world is afraid of the people there... The train that makes huge noise trembles when it reaches the outskirts of the area... The feet of people shudder when they see the landmark of the town... Stuartpuram is the crime capital of South India... That area has another name... Tiger Zone… The Zone of Tiger Nageswara Rao...” explains the voiceover.
The dialogue- “You might have seen a tiger hunting a deer? Have you ever seen a tiger hunting a tiger?” uttered by Ravi Teja describes the ruthless nature of the character. The voiceovers of the superstars make the portrayal more interesting.
Director Vamsee picked a winning script and he is presenting it in an appealing manner. Top technicians are working on the movie and we can see the brilliant and collective efforts put in by all the craftsmen.
The visuals captured by R Madhie ISC, the presentation by director Vamsee, the grandness in making by Abhishek Agarwal Arts, and the sound created by GV Prakash Kumar give enough elevation and take us to the world of notorious criminals. Ravi Teja’s body language, diction, and getup are completely different. The first look and the concept video create curiosity among the audience across the nation.
Nupur Sanon and Gayathri Bharadwaj are roped in to play the leading ladies opposite Ravi Teja in the movie.
Avinash Kolla is the production designer. Srikanth Vissa is the dialogue writer, while Mayank Singhaniya is the co-producer.

regarding this post lol since i’m not the op and didn’t wanna spam it with lengthy takes if nobody wanted a long reblog chain
unetherealfeelings said: this makes complete sense and i would love nothing more than for some real LGBTQ representation but honestly speaking i don’t trust our country or the industries top filmmakers to make a solid film. The main reason i don’t see such a thing happening is because big stars such as vijay, ajith and even suriya are precisely that stars. The day they are regarded as actors and not stars i think will be the day we get to see content that’s plot and character driven rather than the nonsense we get now. These stars are more interested in giving what the audience what they want, an aggressively mysognistic hero who mansplains and harasses women while fighting “social causes” and apparently ending all the wrong in the world. And even if they somehow miraculously made such a film i would be scared at see how much they might fuck it up. The consequences of screwing up LBGT relationships in mainstream media are grave especially in the times we live and the extremist government and its followers. At the end of the day tho I think we are better off wishing queer representation from art house films that are actually interested in creating complex characters worth caring about. Maybe if these films are done right, we could be hopeful of such change in mass films :/ Having said that i think it’s so adorable to see queer characters being played by big stars, just imagining Suriyas eyes or Madhavans smiles has me soft HAHA
i definitely agree that tamil stars are very backward compared to stars from, say, the malayalam industry (both prithviraj and nivin pauly playing openly gay characters warrants praise ngl), and they’re way more concerned about their family and kids audience and stuff and how their image is projected to the masses. hence, the unending commercial potboilers we are made to witness year in and year out from them with only a little differentiation
BUT i do say that suriya is a completely different type and level of star in relation to vijay and ajith. i can’t see the latter 2 doing anything in this capacity, but suriya is.. idk.. he’s somewhere in limbo with this. he’s the only big tamil star to have openly acknowledged and thanked a lgbt fanpage in his name, he liked a lgbt positive tweet when india repelled the law criminalising them, he’s the only one to have given money multiple times to trans groups during this lockdown period and made no grand air or speech about it. somehow, i CAN see him playing a queer character on screen, and his image is less massive than vijay or ajith, for which i am perpetually thankful, cos i never want him to become as huge as vijay or ajith in terms of this. of course he will still be cautious about it and i don’t present him to be some gay rights king championing lgbt discourse, but it’s a start and i definitely see him as the most feasible top star who could plunge into doing something like this on screen, because we know 2 reasonably big and important things in this context; in that 1) he’s very much aware of these issues, and 2) he’s 100% not homophobic/transphobic, and is an ally, neither of which we can surely claim about other stars in the industry cos we just never see them talk or engage with anything like this the way suriya has done
there’s always a possibility of messing up in tamil cinema when someone is pioneering a lgbt film with a big name, but i’d be more forgiving of it if they actually try? and then try again, and again. this is why i am not very interested in arthouse or small indie tamil films in this cos these films do not make a splash or is viewed by the masses. i think a big name attached to a project being openly queer in a film would do more wonders for pushing dialogue in this, even if it’s not a perfect film and there’re things i’d potentially take issue with. i’d still very much rather a top hero do it and they have proper lgbt consultants on set and with the script for sensitivity issues than wish for a small budget flick with unknown names that’d wash out of cinemas in a week or get little to no limelight imo.
primarily because i am ok with a normal mass, commercial film too if the hero is queer. it does not matter to me, i don’t need every lgbt film to be like... deep and philosophical and talking about long seated societal issues. if i have to see suriya play a simple village dude beating up bad guys but his romance interest in the film is another man and they still have cute song and dance sequences, sure, i’d take it, no problem. it can be made within the exact same template we’ve all come to know and love except it’s not heterosexual (or cis, cos i’d be happy with a trans woman lead romance story, too). i guess for me the fundamental thing is not whether the film is ‘’mass or class’’ or anything like that, i want a big star face on it doing it genuienly and sincerely more than i want it to be done perfectly right with no complaints.
*COUGHS* vijay sethupathi pls be suriya’s boyfriend.. thank u, ;__;

Mikhael (2019)
So, I happened to watch this Malayalam film 'Mikhael' last night. Mikhael is directed by Haneef Adani & stars Nivin Pauly, Siddique, Unni Mukundan, J. D. Chakravarthi & Suraj Venjaramoodu in major roles.
I didn't like it.
I was trying to imagine the conversations the makers would have had before making this mess of a movie.

On Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan’s 33rd birthday, Mollywood superstar Mohanlal unveiled the motion poster of his new film, Bruce Lee, which looks like an out-an-out mass entertainer, brimming with over-the-top action, stunts, seetimaar dialogues and a tadkaof romance. Now, Malayalam cinema isn’t usually known for this stuff, but that doesn’t mean filmmakers there can’t pull…

The Women of Kathakali - Kochi, Kerala
Kathakali (literally translated as story-play) is a highly stylised classical drama which evolved to its present form sometime in the 16th-17th Century CE, around the same time that Shakespeare was writing his plays in London. The switch in storytelling from Sanskrit to Sanskritized Malayalam took Kathakali to the masses and it spread far and wide, and today it is synonymous with the cultural heritage of Kerala.
Thus did Kathakali as an individual style of dance-drama emerge as ‘people’s theatre’ from the traditional dances of the past. The plays were performed by the Rajah’s own company of actors not only in temples and courts but from village to village and house to house. The new art form (called ‘Ramanattam’ - ‘”Rama” from the Ramayana and ”attam” meaning dance) soon became very popular all over the Malayalam speaking area. The feudal chieftains of Malabar (as the area was then called) began to vie with one another in their efforts to produce the best Kathakali troupes, and this competition contributed to the rapid development of the art in a very short period. One important result of this development was the composition by the Rajah of Kottayam, in North Malabar, of four plays in verse based on stories from the more colourful Hindu epic, Mahabharata. These are regarded by many connoisseurs as the best examples of Kathakali literature.”
(The above excerpt is from the book “A Guide to Kathakali” by David Bolland.)
The bright and colourful make-up, flowing costumes, percussion music, coordinated hand and eye movements of the artistes, have always appealed to both locals as well as tourists. However, most viewers tend to disconnect once the performance has started. This is largely because of the lack of understanding of: 1. The Language - which is  Sanskritized Malayalam 2. The Story - from the Hindu epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavata Purana.
The real thrill of watching a Kathakali performance however is when it is conducted open-air. They start late in the evening and continue until dawn. As night falls, the shadow effect created by the lone, tall, oil lamp and the reverberation of the music and the open air setting makes for a thrilling experience. The stories on which Kathakali is performed has also evolved. In recent times “The life of Jesus Christ” and “Shakespeare’s Othello” was performed by Kathakali artistes. This is a very good trend and will help Kathakali become a more global art form.
The Kathakali artistes don’t speak heir dialogues they only communicate through mudras (hand gestures) and facial expressions what the singers sing in the background. The artiste uses the mudras to explain each and every word sung by the singer, which we can pick up if we pay close attention. The make-up of the character also reveals the role played and helps in connecting with the story-line, see images and accompanying text above.
Kathakali had been an all-male art form for a very long time, with even women characters being portrayed by men. In a State which is known for its high female to male ratio, matrilineal lineage and high literacy rates, entry barriers for women into the Arts were high.
Our Women of Kathakali in Kochi, Kerala, is a special interest tour that offers an unique opportunity to meet a group of highly spirited women Kathakali artistes who broke through the male bastion, excelled in the art and made a mark for themselves. They share with us their inspiring journey of starting an all women Kathakali troupe while alongside explaining the different elements of this fascinating art form- its stories, language, costumes, music, training, mythology, et al. The interaction ends with a brief lecture-demonstration without any make-up or costume.

6 Best Tamil Films From 2018 That You Must Watch!
Tumblr media
Since the cinema came into existence, varieties of films have been coming out to the audience from the nook and corner of the globe. Indian cinema plays the biggest role in producing films and generating revenue from it. As we all know Indian cinema involves many other national as well as regional film industries which popularly include Hindi Cinema, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, and Assamese among others. Above all, Tamil cinema is an integral part of Indian cinema. It has been very content since its origins. Tamil cinema has produced many legendary directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, actors, actress, musicians, and writers and so on. The year 2018 proved to very significant for the film industry as in this year films from art house cinema to mass cinema created a buzz in the country. On one hand, when films like “2.0,” made history by being one of the highest budget Indian film of all time, at the other hand, films like “To Let” created history by changing the course of the Tamil cinema by its content and representation. Here, we will be discussing about six most important Tamil films of 2018 which can’t be left behind by a true cinephile. The list of these films is based on the writer’s own taste and understanding, however, your suggestion is welcome. Feel free to share your list of Tamil best films from 2018. Pariyerum Perumal
Tumblr media
This is one of the finest, genuine and intense movies I have watched in the year 2018. As said by K.R. Narayanan, “inherited caste system still remains with us”.  The movie brilliantly portrayed the harsh reality of our society, about the ideologies of caste, inequality, life of oppressed people and honor Killings. It’s hard hitting and thought provoking. No hero build ups, no lengthy dialogues, no taking revenge, no blame games, everything is portrayed in a subtle way, carefully balanced from all the aspects. The film boldly asks major questions revolving around the caste system and beautifully portrays a message for the same without ever sacrificing the story-line. Very depressing yet very eye opening movie brilliantly acted out by the majority of the cast, mainly by the protagonist Kathir, who played his role with ease and precision and aptly captured by Sridhar. Some of the songs bring out the emotions pointing to the evils of the rotten system. You feel exhilarated and empowered by the end of the movie.  Vada Chennai
Tumblr media
Vada Chennai lives up to the expectation and hype it created since it was announced years back. The movie is raw yet so refined; the story telling is complex yet simple. The movie in itself has badness with goodness. It’s a perfect mix of things you never thought would sync together. The camera work and realistic feel is incredible. Very well edited and acted out by a talented cast, this movie which portrays a natural north Chennai slum not only is a masterpiece but also an eye candy for the viewers. However, what works great for this movie is its attention to detailing, strong characterization, art direction, background score and the non-linear story telling that keeps us engaged and intrigued throughout the film. This film is directed by one of most promising young breed of Tamil film director called Vetrimaaran – who got name and fame by making one of the most radical, realistic, original and authentic film ‘Visaranai’ in 2015 which was India’s official entry for the Oscars. Vada Chennai is undoubtedly the finest work of Vetrimaaran. Ratsasan
Tumblr media
The opening frame of this film will remind you of the Korean classics ‘Memories of Murder and I saw the Devil’. It is one of most nerve wreaking thriller in a long time in Indian Cinema, you will be in the edge of the seat for the entire movie. You can’t even imagine that this movie was directed by the same guy who has directed Mundasupatti (a hard-core romantic drama). Such a strong story line and he has handled with ease. Each and every character in the movie has done a fabulous job. The unpredictability is another major element that you will fall for while watching it. BGM was right there bringing you the much needed anticipation throughout the movie. Psycho thriller genre is not very successful in Tamil cinema as very few directors have explored this area. However, the director of the film Ram Kumar has definitely done justice to his work bringing us an ambient visual treatment. Climax of the films more intelligent, terrifying, and hypnotizing and the entire team made sure that there are no logical flaws or whatsoever in the movie. 96
Tumblr media
Love is an abstract word that no dictionary can define but its effect on humanity and life as such is astonishing. Some died, sacrificed themselves and some lived for it. This movie has brought out that beauty which made us realize that the word love is not just a few late night calls, letters and gifts; it’s all about giving a bit of you to another person. This film strokes all the right string of emotions with its artistic subtlety. The 90s, the dying years of the ‘simple life’ and perhaps the one snapshot in time that most people over 30 today would want to relive forms the premise of this story. Each and every frame in the movie is admirable. Clear cut scene delivery. Sound effects are brilliant from the bird’s chirping when Ram and Janu are talking in the school campus to the rain sound when they are having conversation at Ram’s apartment, audience immersed into the film very easily. It’s a very simple yet hitting film which showcases how humans are trapped into social norms lose their own self in between. In some of the scenes you will get glimpses of ‘In the Mood For Love’. It has been executed flawlessly. Merku Thodarchi Malai
Tumblr media
‘Poetry in Motion’ describes this film in a completely pure way. Story of the film revolves around a group of landless workers living along the foothills of the Western Ghats in India. It depicts how the introduction of commercialization creates conflicts in the lives of villagers. There are very few Tamil films which has this level of cinematography. The camera simply goes from one place to another and you too as a viewer travel with the camera. Characters and locations look as natural as these could be. Legendary music composer, Illayaraja has composed the background Music of the film which makes the visuals look more appealing, engaging and impactful. The film ends with a series of shots that show the helpful nature of humans who go beyond religion, caste, creed and region to help on another.  In one scene, a Muslim man provides land to the hero without asking for money. In another, the heroine takes debt for the marriage of a girl who is not related to her. Tamil Superstar Vijay Sethupathi has produced the film under his banner and he should be appreciated for supporting such a radical and experimental film. Mercury
Tumblr media
One of the most radical and new age film maker Karthik Subbaraj has already made a name of himself in the Indian film industry, especially in Tamil cinema with films like Pizza, Jigarthandha and Iraivi. Mercury is an addition into his filmography which clearly indicates the versatility of his film making style. Rommance, horror, reality and brutality are the elements that his films consist. Mercury is undoubtedly another master piece from Subbaraj. It is a Silent movie and there is also a strong reason for the film being silent. You can understand that within five minutes of the movie. The story revolves around five people who are accidentally driven in to an old abandoned mercury factory and their attempts to escape from there. This film speaks about the environmental abuse by the corporate and also the emotional complexities of life. The cinematography, color tone and Background music is amazing. The film is described as silent but ends up being loud, noisy and disturbing. The list and its sequencing are based on cinematic sensibilities of the writer. However, you are welcome to give your suggestion.         Read the full article

Evangelizing Arabia: Parish life in Abu Dhabi

Evangelizing Arabia: Parish life in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Feb 4, 2019 / 11:14 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Tuesday, Pope Francis will visit St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Abu Dhabi — one of two total Catholic churches for the Arabian city with a population of 1.42 million.
While few in number, parishes in the United Arab Emirates are remarkably diverse and bring together Catholic traditions and devotions from across the Middle East, South Asia, and the rest of the universal Church.
In St. Joseph’s Cathedral, for example, Masses are celebrated in Arabic, English, French, Filipino, Malayalam, Sinhalese, Urdu, Tamil, Konkani, German, Italian, Korean, Polish, and Ukrainian for its 100,000 expatriate parishioners.
St. Joseph’s parish was the only Catholic church in Abu Dhabi for more than 50 years, until St. Paul’s Catholic Church opened in the city’s Musaffah district in 2015.
The new church’s property spans 49,000 square feet and includes a three-story building that houses a multipurpose hall, a residence for priests, and meeting rooms.
Dario Mobini, a contributing editor for WorldYouthDay.com, visited St. Paul’s a few months after its inauguration. Mobini told CNA that he found great hope in seeing so many people in the church’s perpetual adoration chapel in a country where Catholicism is a minority.
“What an amazing concept to think that there is perpetual adoration going on in a church in the middle of Abu Dhabi,” Mobini said. “There is a lot of hope that we can see in this small country in the Middle East.”
Mobini also visited St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubai, where he was impressed by the “very strong and active lively youth group.”
St. Mary’s hosted the first Catholic Youth Conference of Arabia, an initiative to create a greater sense of a united community among the peninsula’s young Catholics.
Since 2009, the UAE has hosted two additional Arabian Catholic Youth Conferences (ACYC) in 2012 and 2018 with between 1,000 and 1,500 Catholics traveling from Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan to attend the “festival of faith” with Catholic speakers, authors, and musicians.
Mobini was joyfully surprised to be reunited with a group of about 100 young St. Mary’s parishioners in Panama this year at World Youth Day.
“When I was in Panama, the group from the United Arab Emirates was excited to be there to celebrate their faith with others. It really was a sign of great hope due to the fact that maybe in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, you might not be able to see the beauty of the faith freely expressed in such a way that World Youth Day allows it to be,” he said.
The Mass Pope Francis will celebrate Feb. 5 during his two-day trip to Abu Dhabi will make history as the first public outdoor Mass on the peninsula, where each country has restrictions on the freedom of worship.
“Individuals belonging to non-Islamic faiths said they could worship in private without government interference but faced restrictions on practicing their religion in public,” according to the U.S. State Department.
The official religion of the United Arab Emirates is Islam with a Sunni Muslim majority. About 12.6 percent of the total population is Christian, according to the Pew Research Center. The focus of the pope’s visit is interreligious dialogue, particularly with Islam, and includes a meeting with the Muslim Council of Elders and a visit to the great mosque of Abu Dhabi.
Mobini said that he hopes that “Pope Francis will be able to stir and shake the heart of men there so that we can build a community that really reflects the values of human dignity and human life.”

Pope Francis makes his first visit to the Arabian Peninsula
Pope Francis' three-day trip to the United Arab Emirates marks the first visit of a pontiff to the Arab-Muslim conservative peninsula, which has more than 2.6 million Catholics.
While the vast majority of Catholics in the region are expatriates, according to the apostolic vicariates of southern and northern Arabia, the popes' journey to the birthplace of Islam is another milestone in their efforts to strengthen interreligious links.
Kuwait was the first country in the region to formalize its relations with the Vatican in 1968. Yemen followed suit in 1998, Bahrain in 2000, Qatar in 2002 and the United Arab Emirates in 2007.
Saudi Arabia and Oman have not yet established official diplomatic relations with the Holy See.
Last year, Saudi Arabia, home to the sacred sites of Islam in Mecca and Medina, hosted a series of representatives of various Christian traditions, while Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman pleaded for a more liberal.
In April 2018, Saudi Arabia received French Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue at the Vatican. Tauran, who died in July 2018, was considered a strong promoter of the dialogue between the Catholic Church and Islam.
And in November 2017, the head of the Lebanese Maronite church, Beshara Rai, made an official visit to Saudi Arabia, where he met King Salman and Prince Mohammed.
In general, there are more than 3.5 million Christians in the Gulf, about 75% of whom are Catholic, mostly immigrant workers from the Philippines and India.
According to the apostolic vicariates, there would be more than one million Catholics in Saudi Arabia alone, about 350,000 in Kuwait, 80,000 in Bahrain and between 200,000 and 300,000 in Qatar, although there is no official figures.
Nearly one million Catholics live in the United Arab Emirates, according to Bishop Paul Hinder of the Apostolic Vicariate of Saudi Arabia, covering the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Yemen.
There are 22 Catholic churches in the area, where worshipers are invited to surrender and pray.
The United Arab Emirates has the largest number of Catholic churches in the region with eight. Oman, Kuwait and Yemen have four each, while Qatar and Bahrain each have one.
Mass celebrated in churches on Fridays, which marks the first day of the weekend in the region, usually has the greatest participation.
In the United Arab Emirates, Mass is celebrated at different times of the week and in different languages, including English, Tagalog, Malayalam and Urdu, to suit different nationalities.
According to the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia, which covers Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Qatar, Catholics "enjoy freedom of worship within the boundaries of our parish complexes".
Although in Saudi Arabia, all non-Muslim houses of prayer are forbidden.
The Apostolic Vicariate added that Catholics faced certain difficulties because of "the limitation of the number of priests, the scarcity of churches and the limited space in the churches", especially at Christmas and Easter, when the number of spectators can reach 25,000 people.
"It is also forbidden (under pain of punishment) to participate in any public activity or manifestation of religion, including proselytizing (trying to convert people to Christianity)," says the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia. .
Although the majority of Christians in the region are migrant workers, there are a small number of local Christians in Kuwait, Bahrain and Yemen.
According to Father Emmanuel Benjamin Jacob Gharib, head of the National Evangelical Church in Kuwait, there are about 260 Kuwaiti Christians from eight extended families.
According to unofficial estimates, there are 1,000 Bahraini Christian citizens and thousands of Yemeni Christians
