UMC:R Chapter 5: Compiling
A lazy first-person ‘journal entry’ chapter. Merry Christmas. There’ll probably be one more chapter before the prequel arc is done.
Uh, okay, testing. Test. Tes-tiiiing. Alright. Uh, this is Evan Abrams and it’s… May 18th. So it’s been a week since I, uh, ‘woke up’, and I think I’ve got my head wrapped around this whole situation. I’m recording this as a kind of way to, you know, make sure everything’s in order, that I’ve got my plans together, all that. Plus, if I suffer another, uh, memory loss or something, I want an easy summary on hand. I don’t want to have to spend another week playing catch-up with my own life.
So, to summarize, a week ago today I found myself in a bar in Arizona with no memory of how I got there. I eventually figured out that I’d basically erased about three months of my memory through some hideous DIY surgery. I’m still not sure exactly why I did this to myself, and I seem to have sanitized the notes I kept from those missing months to keep myself from figuring it out.
Shit, I’m not doing this very well. The big picture is, I apparently discovered that the… supernatural? Is real. That word sounds wrong for describing this type of thing. But there’s magic, and monsters, and people with special abilities… I have so many notes about all kinds of things, I’m honestly amazed by the sheer volume of data I was able to gather. I did it really well, too, really professional, I…
Okay, don’t get caught up in sucking your own dick, Evan. Oh yeah, that reminds me—sometime during the missing time I got really fucked up. Like, physically. My face looks like an old steak. Not sure how that happened. A few serious wounds on the rest of my body, too, but here’s the good news. Remember how I mentioned special powers? Apparently I’ve had one my whole life, but something ramped it up recently. I heal very quickly. The process leaves some serious scars, it seems, but the internal healing seems flawless. I have no residual pain from what I’m pretty sure are gunshot wounds. Even if it’s been three months, that shouldn’t be possible. I hit my head really bad a few days ago and minutes later there was no sign of any injury. No pain, no mark, no blood except what got in my hair. According to my notes, my body can recover from near-mortal injuries in hours, if not minutes. Apparently it ‘focuses’, if you can assign some kind of intent to a biological process, on making me functional and mobile as soon as possible, so it rushes the skin repair. Keep me from losing too much blood, prevent infection, make sure it doesn’t get worse. I guess it scars up so bad because of that, but I think that’s a fair price to pay for being extremely durable.
This all kinda brings me back around to what my plan is going forward. I really hit the weights hard these past few months and I’m fucking huge now. My pre-brain erasure self got into a pretty serious exercise routine—at least two hours a day. I was worried it’d be a pain in the ass, but my body seems to remember the movements. It feels good. I’m so strong now, and I’ve been doing yoga and a bunch of really tough stretches and, well, I feel amazing. I feel like I could be sexy. Except for the face, I mean. Oh, uh, and I checked, it didn’t heal old injuries, so no improvement below the belt. Oh well. Maybe there’s a possibility out there.
Okay… enough about that. I keep getting distracted. There’s just so much to take in. The reason I’ve been bulking up and did all this is because I decided to do something about… well, the intersection of the ‘normal’ world and this new one. Not go out hunting monsters or magic-users or whatever, but… just protect people who can’t defend themselves from things like that. Be an equalizing factor. Give people some protection from things they don’t even know they need protection from. Maybe keeping some of the bad things at bay will let things really improve for the world, you know?
But I can’t do that just by being buff and unkillable, though it certainly helps. I can’t help people just by throwing myself into this metaphorical meat grinder. So I somehow got my hands on something called The Book of Fate, which is the lynchpin to some kind of magic ritual that will make me, if my notes and the translations are correct, an “Agent of Karma”. Apparently the people who devised this thing—over literal millennia, mind you—believed that the universe, reality, everything, whatever, actually wants to be a just place, but it can’t directly intervene in its own self. Like how we can’t actually directly fight our own diseases, we have to trust in our body’s internal systems to deal with them. Anyway, these people believed that the moral arc of the universe actually does bend towards justice, and all this research, experimentation, and sacrifice they did was to give someone the power to actually do what needs done. To make sure good things happen to good people, bad things to bad people, mercy and justice metered out appropriately, all that jazz. Apparently it’s supposed to allow the… user? To develop great supernatural abilities as they act in accordance with “the will of the Universe” or something like that.
That sounds amazing and everything, but a lot of it’s pretty vague on the kind of powers you get or how you’ll even know what constitutes “the will of the Universe”. There are some mentions of being granted extraordinary senses or awareness, but again, vague. I don’t like the idea of playing judge, jury, and executioner… if I have to fight people or things to make things right, I’ll do it, but… just enough to handle the things that are outside of existing systems. I don’t want to make people think that society is obsolete and can’t protect them. I’ll just… you know, handle the things that the normal world isn’t equipped to handle.
God, I hope I don’t have to kill anyone.
Uh, anyway, one thing the research made clear is that I won’t have any difficulty finding trouble, at least. My earlier self wrote about a concept called an “entropy sink”, which is apparently what I’ll become in addition to being an “agent of Karma”. Apparently, by fighting bad shit I’ll be soaking up that entropy, that chaos and evil created by said bad shit, which in turn will make more bad shit tend to happen to me. That sounds miserable, but better it happens to the big strong guy with super-healing than to some poor kid playing in their back yard, right?
I’m not worried about that part. The more good I do, the more bad I find, but the stronger I get. Sounds like a fair deal to me.
So, uh… most of my ‘normal’ work has been automated by this point. My Amalgorithms (note to self, check on the progress on that trademark applications) seem to have been improved a bit recently, so past me wasn’t just focusing on the superhero stuff. They can probably handle any projects that come my way, but I think I’m going to stop putting out so many feelers for now. Might need to start working on the Blaccat project again, though; I may need to take some extra-legal measures sometime in the future, depending on which way this goes. I’m sure there will be times when I need some information that’s not, uh, public.
So I keep finding little hide-aways I apparently carved out of some of the empty spaces in the RV. I’ve found a couple of serious guns, a lot of ammo, and a lot of… pharmaceutical. I am committing so many felonies just by knowing about this car. But I apparently also built several, well, let’s call them tools. Like a suit of low-profile body armor I 3D-printed and wired together. I have no idea if that works or not and I’m not keen to find out, but the old me’s notes seem sound. I guess I’ll find out if somebody shoots me and I wind up with a wound full of weird plastic discs.
I think I’ve said all I need to say. Most of the ingredients for the Book’s ritual are gathered, and I’ve already rented a cabin out in the middle of nowhere to perform this thing. Apparently the moon needs to be a waxing crescent for this to work, so I’m going to have to wait a couple weeks to actually perform it, but I’m going to get everything set up in the meantime. The only thing I really have reservations about is that the ritual needs a ‘focus’, and it apparently has to be something with great emotional significance to me. The obvious answer is Mr. Nex, but… I don’t know if the focus survives the process. All the other ingredients get used up, apparently, but nothing says anything about the focus… do you think it’s what he’d want? If he was actually alive and knew all he would know about me, having been by my side my entire life? God, listen to me. I’m 27 years old and I’m having a crisis over a stuffed giraffe. But… I guess he wouldn’t be of great emotional significance if the thought of giving him up was easy. I’ll either figure something out or suck it up. There are greater things at stake here than my feelings.
God, I’m gonna have to kill someone, aren’t I.

1. A sizable portfolio and/or list of past clients
Smart digital marketing agencies are proud of who they work with and the work they do. Furthermore, they typically display their partnerships for the world to see.
You don’t necessarily have to know who their past clients are (bonus points if you do). But if you can’t find a list of previous clients or examples of their work, that may mean they haven’t worked with anyone.
Which… is fine if you’re on a budget. But not okay if you’re looking for the best of the best.
That said, some types of services aren’t easy to display, like content marketing and SEO. So, agencies specializing in those areas may not be able to showcase their work in a portfolio.
However, a client list is a good indication of their experience.
Note: with services like graphic design or website development, you should see a well-put-together showcase of the type of work they do. If you can’t find any examples, move on to a service provider with a portfolio that matches your expectations.
2. Experienced and specialized team members
Regardless of the type of services you’re after, it’s essential to make sure the agency you hire has the right team-members to suit your project.
For example, you wouldn’t hire someone to design a logo if they don’t have a graphic designer.
Look through their about page to see if they list their team members there.
And if not, LinkedIn is also a great place to look. Start by searching for the agency.
Then click “People” to see a list of everyone who works there.
Note: this typically won’t show you any freelancers or contractors they work with, so it’s not always 100% indicative of who’s on their team.
Furthermore, some of their team members may not be on Linkedin at all.
But this is an excellent place to start. You can always ask questions during your consultation if you aren’t sure.
3. Social proof and a strong industry reputation
Social proof, like testimonials and previous client reviews, can give you deep insight into what working with that agency is like.
Furthermore, smart marketers understand the importance of displaying social proof on their website. So, if you can’t find any, they may not have any previous clients, or they may not understand the industry as well as you’d like them to.
Besides positive reviews, negative or neutral reviews can also shine a light on areas that agency struggles with to get a clear understanding of their work.
Lastly, you can search for in-depth reviews on Google to see what others in the industry (and their past clients) say about their experiences with the agency.
4. Similar core values and company culture
Take a moment to revisit your company’s core values and culture.
Why? Because it’s crucial to work with a digital marketing agency that values the same things and operates in a similar environment.
Doing so ensures they mesh and work well with your team. Ultimately, an agency is an extension of your business. Choosing an agency with the right values and culture is just as important as considering the quality of their work.
The last thing you want is the stress of working with a group of people who don’t value the same things or operate in the same way.
Look at the words and phrases an agency uses to describe what they do. Does this align with your core values and the results you expect to see?
If not, move on to an agency that feels like a better fit.

Note: this typically won’t show you any freelancers or contractors they work with, so it’s not always 100% indicative of who’s on their team.
Furthermore, some of their team members may not be on Linkedin at all.
But this is an excellent place to start. You can always ask questions during your consultation if you aren’t sure.

This Teacher’s Uber-Style App Feeds Hungry College Students
Dispelling loneliness. Building community. Helping college students share extra meal swipes with hungry classmates. There’s an app for that!
Along the way, he developed tips that any educator—or student—can use to fulfill a hidden need in a university community.
When Jon Chin was a grad student at New York University in 2013, he happened upon a Facebook page where students anonymously posted their secrets. One post in particular caught his eye: A classmate wrote that he was having trouble obtaining food. Chin himself had faced food insecurity as a child, and the post made him nauseous. Piqued, Chin continued to follow the online chat and, after some weeks, he saw new posts from additional students admitting they were not getting enough to eat, either.
Then, something extraordinary happened. “Other students started to reply, saying, ‘I have extra meal swipes. Send me a message and I’ll [meet you to] swipe you to give you a meal,’” says Chin. “I saw that as an opportunity to really innovate and help build something bigger.”
Chin went on to do just that, using his software development skills to create an application that would connect hungry students with classmates who had extra meal swipes. Along the way, he developed tips that any educator—or student—can use to fulfill a hidden need in a university community.

Bringing Tech To the Cafeteria Table
Once Chin decided to build a digital platform with social impact, he promised himself he would not leave his desk until he had finished. Some 24 hours later, he’d built the prototype for Share Meals.
The initial response exceeded his expectations. “People loved it,” says Chin. “We launched in the last week of the school year, and in just seven days, we raised 800 meal swipes [for] 400 [requests].”
Since Share Meals first went live, Chin has been busy. He earned a master’s degree in creative writing and poetry from Brooklyn College, began a master’s degree program in English education at NYU, and is now an adjunct lecturer at CUNY. At the same time, he’s continued to refine both his app and his outreach to impact students.

Chin says that some students have just $25 for two weeks’ worth of groceries, and when their funds run out, they skip meals—some even going a whole day without food. “[It] goes back to the larger issue of college affordability,” he says. In some cities, the high cost of living only compounds the problem. Share Meals, says Chin, “fills in a lot of gaps that universities have when it comes to serving students who are food insecure.”
To make it easy for students to find one another for shared meals, Chin modeled his app’s real-time map display after those used by Uber and Lyft: If a user wants to share meal swipes, she logs in, and her location will show up immediately. Spare meals can be offered all at once or one at a time. The platform also features a list of upcoming local events offering free food.
Only students who attend the same school get matched up by Share Meals. To participate in the program, students must register with their “.edu” email address to verify that they are enrolled in a university. However, the email is kept private, with students communicating via a chat feature embedded in the app. (Chin notes that this online chat has allowed students to connect in a more personal way, which has led to both friendships and romances.)

Tattoo Time
Chin will discuss “Using Tattoos to Teach the Essay Writing Process” at SXSW EDU 2019. Participants will use live observation, interviewing, and research to learn more about Chin himself; they’ll then design a tattoo befitting his personality and interests. Chin will also explain how he gradually raises the stakes of the lesson—from pen on paper to permanent marker on skin—to maintain engagement for students as they strengthen composition skills.
Promoting Humanity Through Code
On a personal level, creating Share Meals has been a “huge, major event” in Chin’s life. He uses his experience as a reference point to teach software engineers to be more “socially minded.” He even piloted a class at The Cooper Union in the summer of 2018 called, Computer Science and Entrepreneurship for Social Good.
Currently, Share Meals serves students at NYU and Columbia University in New York and at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Chin says he plans to continue working to bring Share Meals to more colleges and universities. And he will soon attend a summit hosted by Universities Fighting World Hunger, where students, administrators, and faculty from all over the world will convene for two days to network and share best practices.

Sound Advice: Chin’s Algorithm for Launching a Charitable App
When solving the problem of student hunger, doing it via an online platform is arguably the most cost-effective approach. While maintaining a food pantry can cost upwards of $30,000 per year, Chin says, Share Meals required an outlay of about $250. The same may hold true for other charitable works.
For anyone seeking to fulfill a hidden need in a university community using technology, Chin offers these tips:
1. Keep costs low by doing your homework
Creating a clear list of requirements—such as user experience and functionality—can ensure that the project stays on budget.
2. Dispel social stigma by changing the language
To maintain and uphold the dignity of students who use the app, Chin and his team take great care with the language they use in and around the platform. The meals are not “donations” or “leftovers.” Rather, the experience is viewed as “two students meeting over lunch.”
3. Spread the news by forming partnerships
Students, food pantries, and social media administrators can help get the word out about a new program. Chin says faculty members play a critical role in raising awareness of Share Meals because they often have a good idea of who in their classroom is hungry.
4. Ensure continuity by keeping good records
Share Meals relies heavily on help from student ambassadors. To ensure seamless transfer of knowledge from one graduating class to the next, Chin recommends using Word or Google docs to keep track of all communication, key steps and processes, and contributions.
5. Branch out by considering tangential needs
Chin’s social impact extends beyond the app. Last year, he helped organize a large pack-athon of 10,000 shelf-stable meals and smaller events in which 100-plus sandwiches were placed in on-campus community refrigerators. Chin also helped establish The Open Kitchen community cooking classes, which teach students foundational food skills.
Currently, Chin is developing the Share Meals Smart Pantry, a specialized vending machine to give universities a low-cost entry point to establishing or expanding an on-campus food pantry. The prototype is planned for deployment at New York’s Hunter College in 2019.

As an adjunct lecturer of English at City University of New York, Chin needed a way to light up the creative side of the brain for students in high-tech majors, nursing, and other non-humanities disciplines. By musing on the possible origins and meanings behind tattoos, he reasoned, these students might learn to tap into their own hidden inspiration and beat writer’s block.
“When I told them they were going to draw on my arm, they were so shocked,” Chin says. “They were, like, ‘Is this real life? Bitcoin’s Lightning Network Is Live, But Can It Keep from Going Corporate?
Not yet out of beta, hundreds of developers around the world are already experimenting with bitcoin’s newest technology – the Lightning Network – donating time and resources to help lay the groundwork for a more scalable version of the oldest and largest cryptocurrency yet created.
So great has been the effort that there are now more than 1,000 lightning nodes estimated to be running the software on live computers, largely at a loss, but motivated by the greater gain of making the bitcoin network more accessible and affordable. Still, with the network entering its bootstrapping phase, some are beginning to question when the economics of scale may begin to bring new pressures.
As the bitcoin community saw with the rise of cryptocurrency mining, in which at-home mining via PCs was quickly outpaced by industrial operations, profits attract corporate interests. And experts admit, it’s entirely possible that companies could make money by offering easy access to quick cryptocurrency payments.
“If an entity is going to put a lot of value into payment channels and operate the node for generating profit,” former BitGo engineer Jameson Lopp said. “Then it’s probably going to be similar to mining.”

According to Dryja, users will be able to freely abandon institutional players that try to exert too much influence over individuals.
“Let’s say everyone is using Amazon, for example, and Amazon says we’ll also route payments between users,” Dryja said. “If that node starts doing things people don’t like, it’s very cheap to close it. They never have your money.”
Along those lines, Lightning app developer Elaine Ou, argues that the barrier to entry for providing the default software is low, meaning should one company embrace poor practices, alternatives could quickly arise.
“There are two other Lightning implementations in use already, so I’m not too worried about centralization. The specs are open and updated through an open process,” she said.
None of this is to say the Lightning Network is infallibly egalitarian. Dryja told BTC News Today that institutional players will probably factor into this growing network, saying:
“Having more large nodes is more efficient. I think it will be exchanges becoming the dominant players, at least in the first few years, and that’s not great. It would be great if people were running nodes off of Raspberry Pis in their houses.”
That’s why Lightning Labs CEO Elizabeth Stark told BTC News Today that her team strives to make the technology collaborative yet distinct from any company, including her namesake startup, adding: “The Lightning Network specification is open and anyone can build a compatible implementation.”
Lightning developer Jack Mallers, who created the free Zap Lightning wallet on top of Lightning Labs’ lnd software, will soon release consumer applications for both mobile and desktop. Those interfaces will make it even easier for average people to use Lightning without relying on corporate channels.
Low barrier to entry
It’s entirely possible that inherent fees could make Lightning too expensive for average users to constantly open and close channels. But so far, this isn’t the case.
Unlike bitcoin mining, which requires a great deal of expensive electricity, it usually costs just a few cents to open a Lightning channel. A channel hosting over 100,000 transactions still costs less than $20 to operate.
“Competition is really high on the network and the barrier to entry is low,” Mallers said, pointing to the fact he’s already gotten 19 volunteer developers to help him build Zap.
He added:
“Similar to the way people have bitcoin wallets on their phone today, eventually what you’ll be able to do is you’ll have a Lightning node on an iPhone or desktop, and it will be contacting other full nodes on the network, totally separate from your machine, pinging it for information.”
In fact, the upcoming Zap interface is just one of several Lightning projects allowing users to run a Lightning node without piggybacking on more complex bitcoin or litecoin nodes. Regardless, this beginner-friendly option makes the lightning network remarkably different than cryptocurrency mining. As for companies like Lightning Labs and Blockstream, they have an economic incentive to avoid becoming legacy middlemen providers.
Reputations at stake
As for the allegations that one of these companies could become another Facebook, there are reasons that this isn’t exactly likely, either.
Lightning Labs, for instance, benefits from cooperation with developers like Mallers and Ou, who aren’t on Stark’s payroll. For blockchain startups working on this open-source technology, their professional reputation relies on their perceived efforts to keep the bitcoin network mostly decentralized.
Corporate interests generally consolidate power and access, but the bitcoin community has proven it will combat such efforts, such as when a small group of people forked the bitcoin network to create bitcoin gold in an effort to curb industrial miners. Of course, the Lighting Network is much younger than bitcoin, and a split like that could have wider implications for the Lighting community.
If entrepreneurs want to continue spearheading Lightning development, they will have to avoid aligning themselves with any party seeking disproportionate influence.
“We don’t currently operate any Lightning nodes and that’s not part of our plan. We build infrastructure for other people to operate nodes and for the network as a whole,” Stark told BTC News Today.
Lightning Labs investor and BitGo CTO Ben Davenport echoed her sentiment, saying, “They are not going to monetize the protocol directly. But there are always opportunities for smart teams, who are early in an important space, to develop business models.”
Dryja told BTC News Today it’s still too early to say how this young technology will impact decentralization at large.
However, Mallers is optimistic because channel operators never take custody of user funds. Plus, anyone with the technical skills can actually choose the path their payments take. It will be easy for cypherpunks to avoid corporate channels.
“You’re never reliant on any third party. You can even do configuration and choose which path you want to take,” Mallers said. “You can route around certain participants in the network if needed.”
Blockstream developer Rusty Russell believes Lightning’s community pendulum will swing back towards greater decentralization in the long run, and that the barrier to entry is the chief reason.
“It’s easier to accept Lightning payments than it is to accept on-chain [bitcoin] payments. So we’re seeing more people controlling their own payment infrastructure,” he said, adding:
“I think that will increase as we make the entire stack more usable, and it’s an excellent trend for the health of the ecosystem.”
