Pritzen triumphs in Tour of Good Hope tactical battle
National U23 road champion Marc Pritzen triumphed in a battle of tactics to finish top of the overall podium on the last day of the Takealot Tour of Good Hope in the Cape Winelands today.
The country’s premier road cycle race, presented by the City of Drakenstein, ended in windy conditions as the riders tackled the final stage of 66.7km, finishing with its traditional climb up to the Taal Monument, just outside Paarl.
In a tense struggle to the finish, Pritzen, who won the race for the first time, used his climbing power to finally shake off Jason Oosthuizen (TEG Procycling) and grab the yellow jersey.
The OfficeGuru Racing rider completed the stage in 1:43:08 for an overall time of 9:57:15, 21 seconds ahead of the second-placed Oosthuizen. Frans Claes (Alfa Bodyworks/Giant), who was third on the stage, also finished third overall.
Byron Munton, also Alfa Bodyworks/Giant, finished in second place in today’s stage.
Overnight leader Dylan Girdlestone suffered a puncture on the final stage and finished in eighth place overall, about three minutes behind the winner.
Nolan Hoffman (Team Enza) won the sprints category ahead of Yousif Mirza Alhammadi (Team Emirates UAE) and Gustav Basson (TEG Procycling).
The King of the Mountain title went to HB Kruger (Alfa Bodyworks/Giant), with Pritzen second and Steven van Heerden (Team Enza) third.
Pritzen said they had planned the day differently, with his initial role being to secure the stage win and allow Girdlestone to retain his overall top position.
“The idea was to control the day because the finish suits me,” said Pritzen.
“So we wanted to keep the race together until the final climb, setting me up for the stage win, and Dylan wouldn’t lose any time on [his closest challenger] Kent [Main].
“But we woke up this morning to find the wind was howling and we knew this day was not going to be easy.”
When Munton sparked a breakaway about 15km into the stage, Pritzen was on his wheel and decided to go with him.
“There was quite a big group that got away and the gap went to 45 seconds,” he said.
“Then 10km later the gap went out to 2:45 and it was a bit risky so I decided I was done working and I sat on the back.
“That caused a lot of problems in the break because everyone was shouting and Jason [Oosthuizen, his main overall rival] didn’t want to roll through and was sitting on my wheel.”
He and Oosthuizen slowed down completely, but there were some attacks from the rest and eventually Pritzen said his team owner and manager Jamie Taylor advised him to work to close the gap.
“Byron was only about a minute behind me on the GC so then I rode across with about 4km to go and rolled through to the bottom of the climb.
“At that stage Byron made the pace nice and hard, but I accelerated and went through, with Jason on my wheel.
“I went again and when I peeked under my arm, he was still there, so I went once more and that was enough to snap the elastic for the win.”
Having set the Tour of Good Hope as one of his goals for the year – the first having been achieved at the national road champs – Pritzen was delighted with the outcome.
“It is very satisfying to win this tour for the first time and all the credit must go to the team, both riders and management, for the roles they played in making it possible,” he said.
“I cannot thank my teammates enough because we are a fairly young outfit and the way they controlled the stages, especially yesterday, was fantastic.
“And to have team management members such as Jamie and Keith Cruickshank providing the motivation and helping in so many ways made a massive difference.”
OfficeGuru will now turn their attention to the Cape Town Cycle Tour on Sunday, although Pritzen acknowledged they did not “have an out-and-out sprinter”.
“Nonetheless, we will have our strategy planned for the race and will go out there and see what happens on the day.”
In the women’s race, Catherine Colyn claimed the final stage honours in 2:20:42, but could not prevent first-time entrant Maja Wloszczowska of Poland from taking the overall honours.
Wloszczowska, who will be riding the Cape Epic later this month with Kross Fit Racing teammate Ariane Luthi, finished three seconds behind Colyn for an overall time of 12:42:37.
Luthi, third on the day, was second in the general classification in 12:47:08, followed by Colyn in 12:52:17
The Polish rider was delighted to win the title, describing the event as “five days of fantastic racing”.
“There was good competition, some great climbs and a tough time-trial, so I am very happy with the win,” said Wloszczowska.
“The best for me was winning the queen stage of 145km with some hard climbs and that shows my fitness is pretty good.
“I love racing in South Africa, although I haven’t been here since winning the first round of the [mountain-bike] World Cup in 2012. It is my first road race in the country and to win three of the five stages is very satisfying.
“I am sure the experience I have had here will pay off during the Cape Epic.”
Polish rider Maja Wloszczowska (middle) won the women’s overall title in the five-stage Takealot Tour of Good Hope road cycle race which ended at the Taal Monument near Paarl in the Cape Winelands today. Second overall was Ariane Luthi (left) and third was Catherine Colyn (right).

Girdlestone claims yellow jersey in Tour of Good Hope
Dylan Girdlestone set himself up for a real shot at the title when he took the yellow jersey in a solo finish on the fourth stage of the Takealot Tour of Good Hope road cycling race in the Cape Winelands today.
The penultimate day of South Africa’s premier road tour, presented by the City of Drakenstein, saw riders tackle the queen stage of 145km with climbs over Bainskloof Pass in both directions.
With his OfficeGuru Racing team providing outstanding support, Girdlestone was finally able to attack Kent Main (TEG Procycling) with less than two kilometres to go to build a lead of seven seconds by the time he crossed the line.
His stage time of 3:41:42 gives him a lead of 39 seconds over Main on the general classification, with the final stage over 66.7km finishing at the Taal Monument just outside Paarl tomorrow.
In second place today was Main, with team-mate Jason Oosthuizen completing the podium. They also occupy second and third positions respectively on the overall standings.
Describing the stage as the toughest challenge of the five-stage tour, Girdlestone said his team were able to control the race throughout as they withstood a number of attacks from the TEG riders.
“We basically had a game plan to try to cover the first, second and third places on the GC which maybe was a bit ambitious because the stage was tough and a bit longer than originally planned,” he said.
“But our guys really controlled the race from the beginning, despite the early breakaway [at the 30km mark] by HB Kruger and Steven van Heerden.
“We let them go up the road and although they were GC threats we thought that might eliminate them because it was a long hard day.”
After his teammates Andrew Edwards and Josh van Wyk paced the stage for the first 100km, Girdlestone said he, Travis Barrett, Alex Worsdale and Marc Pritzen worked to close the gap as they tackled Bainskloof for a second time.
“The breakaway had a three-minute gap at the bottom of Bainskloof and we had to increase the pace,” he added.
“Near the top of the climb TEG started to attack and we had to close a couple of moves, which brought the time down [on the breakaway] quite a lot.
“Following the descent, TEG continued to attack after Alex had closed down the breakaway for good, which put us on the back foot for a bit because Travis, Marc and I had to follow these attacks.”
When Main broke away from the group, Girdlestone stayed on his wheel before making his move with 1.5km to go.
“I was able to put in an attack and managed to get away, soloing to the finish,” he said.
Having done the race in 2015, Girdlestone said he knew all about the final stage and the last climb to the Taal Monument.
“I actually finished second on the final stage then so I am not too stressed about that,” he added.
“We’ve got a strong team to cover all the moves up to the climb and then it will be up to the other GC contenders to try to make a move.”
In the sprints classification, Nolan Hoffman (Team Enza) leads with the way from Gustav Basson (TEG Procycling) and Girdlestone, while HB Kruger (Alfa Bodyworks/Giant) tops the King of the Mountains category.
Polish rider Maja Wloszczowska continued to build on her lead in the women’s race, winning her third stage in a row and setting herself up for the top overall spot in her debut Tour of Good Hope appearance.
She came home in 4:30:55, followed by Kross Fit Racing teammate Ariane Luthi and Catherine Colyn.
Wloszczowska leads the general classification in 10:21:52, with Luthi (10:26:02) second and Colyn (10:31:34) third.
With climbing her strength, Wloszczowska said she had enjoyed the rides over Bainskloof Pass, even though it was hard work in the end.
“From the beginning Catherine [Colyn] set the pace and I, Lucy [James] and Ariane [Luthi] went with her,” she said.
“We all worked together and set a good pace on the flat parts.
“When it came to the final descent, Catherine and Ariane went so fast that we dropped Lucy and I just managed to hang on.
“With about 15km to go I attacked and managed to get away, but it was tough because it was further than I expected to the finish.
“It started to rain and there was a headwind, but happily I was able to hold onto my lead.”

The fight for third, 2016 XCo MTB World Champs - via UCI facebook gallery
Gutted for Maja Włoszczowska - had been in silver position, but punctured, so in the last lap was racing in third place, when she punctured AGAIN, had to run to the pits and was passed by Emily Batty.  Włoszczowska fought hard, but just couldn’t outsprint Batty - “that’s bike racing”, but it must hurt so much!
