The Rich Embroidered artwork of Nigerian Style
Nigerian style is a rich embroidery of culture, custom, and development. It draws motivation from the country's assorted ethnic gatherings, each with its interesting clothing styles, textures, and customs. Nigerian style originators capably integrate these components into their manifestations, bringing about a lively and various design scene.
Ankara and Conventional Textures: One of the signs of Nigerian style is the broad utilization of Ankara, a brilliant and complicatedly designed texture. Ankara, otherwise called African wax print, is utilized to make a great many pieces of clothing, from customary dresses to contemporary streetwear. Numerous originators utilize this texture as a material for their inventiveness, blending and matching examples to make outwardly shocking pieces that grandstand Nigerian culture.
Conventional Clothing: Nigerian style originators frequently reconsider customary dress, for example, agbada, kaftans, and gele, giving them a cutting edge turn. These outfits are worn for extraordinary events as well as have turned into a piece of ordinary style, mirroring a feeling of satisfaction in social legacy.

Deola Sagoe: Deola Sagoe is a trailblazer in Nigerian style and is known for her mark "Komole" assortment, which features her dominance of conventional textures and present day plan. She has earned respect on the worldwide stage and has dressed VIPs and dignitaries around the world.

Mai Atafo: Mai Atafo is a main Nigerian menswear originator, known for his immaculate fitting and smooth plans. His image, Mai Atafo Propelled, has dressed numerous Nigerian famous people and is a go-to decision for grooms and groomsmen.
Worldwide Effect and Motivation
Nigerian style planners are causing disturbances in their nation of origin as well as impacting worldwide style. Their capacity to imbue African culture into contemporary style has enlivened creators from around the world. Lately, Nigerian style weeks and occasions have acquired conspicuousness, standing out from design fans and industry insiders around the world.
Nigerian design architects are at the bleeding edge of the worldwide style industry, commending their rich social legacy while enhancing and pushing the limits of style. Their novel mix of conventional components and present day innovativeness has made Nigeria a style force to be reckoned with, and their impact should be visible on runways and roads around the world. As the world keeps on embracing variety in style, Nigerian creators stay fundamental supporters of the worldwide style scene, demonstrating that style is a widespread language, spoken with energy and creativity by planners from each side of the world.

My dreams of being a designer were stifled only by the feeling that I might not have what it took. When my nails started to turn heads everywhere I went, I realized it was time to go for it. What did I have to lose? I started designing my own nails because I couldn’t find salons that were able to do what I wanted done. It is not exactly how I thought I would get started, I just kind of fell into it, but I am passionate about it. Nails, for me, had become my most important accessory when putting an outfit together. Nigerian Fashion Designers Creativity, Culture, and Global Influence
Nigeria, often referred to as the "Giant of Africa," is not only known for its diverse culture, vibrant music, and rich history but also for its burgeoning fashion industry. Nigerian fashion designers have made a significant impact on the global fashion scene, with their unique blend of traditional African elements and contemporary style. In this article, we will explore the world of Nigerian fashion designers, their creative expressions, and their influence on the global fashion landscape.
The Rich Tapestry of Nigerian Fashion
Nigerian fashion is a rich tapestry of culture, tradition, and innovation. It draws inspiration from the country's diverse ethnic groups, each with its unique clothing styles, fabrics, and traditions. Nigerian fashion designers skillfully incorporate these elements into their creations, resulting in a vibrant and diverse fashion landscape.
Ankara and Traditional Fabrics: One of the hallmarks of Nigerian fashion is the extensive use of Ankara, a colorful and intricately patterned fabric. Ankara, also known as African wax print, is used to create a wide range of garments, from traditional dresses to contemporary streetwear. Many designers use this fabric as a canvas for their creativity, mixing and matching patterns to create visually stunning pieces that showcase Nigerian culture.
Traditional Attire: Nigerian fashion designers often reinterpret traditional clothing, such as agbada, kaftans, and gele, giving them a modern twist. These outfits are worn not only for special occasions but have become a part of everyday fashion, reflecting a sense of pride in cultural heritage.
Influential Nigerian Fashion Designers
Nigeria is home to many renowned fashion designers who have made a name for themselves both locally and internationally. Some of the most influential names in Nigerian fashion include:
Deola Sagoe: Deola Sagoe is a pioneer in Nigerian fashion and is known for her signature "Komole" collection, which showcases her mastery of traditional fabrics and modern design. She has gained recognition on the global stage and has dressed celebrities and dignitaries worldwide.
Lisa Folawiyo: Lisa Folawiyo is celebrated for her innovative use of Ankara fabric. Her brand, Jewel by Lisa, has gained international acclaim and has been worn by celebrities like Beyonc← and Lupita Nyong'o.
Mai Atafo: Mai Atafo is a leading Nigerian menswear designer, known for his impeccable tailoring and suave designs. His brand, Mai Atafo Inspired, has dressed many Nigerian celebrities and is a go-to choice for grooms and groomsmen.
Global Impact and Inspiration
Nigerian fashion designers are not only making waves in their home country but are also influencing global fashion trends. Their ability to infuse African culture into contemporary fashion has inspired designers from around the world. In recent years, Nigerian fashion weeks and events have gained prominence, attracting attention from fashion enthusiasts and industry insiders globally.
Nigerian fashion designers are at the forefront of the global fashion industry, celebrating their rich cultural heritage while innovating and pushing the boundaries of style. Their unique blend of traditional elements and modern creativity has made Nigeria a fashion powerhouse, and their influence can be seen on runways and streets worldwide. As the world continues to embrace diversity in fashion, Nigerian designers remain essential contributors to the global sartorial landscape, proving that fashion is a universal language, spoken with flair and originality by designers from every corner of the world.

Jim Ovia Inaugurates Zenith Bank’s Lifestyle Fair
By Tony Ademiluyi The Chairman of Zenith Bank, Jim Ovia was among the large drove of people who convened at the Eko Energy City of Eko Atlantic in Victoria Island, Lagos, yesterday November 29, for the second edition of the Style by Zenith. Accompanied by top management staff, Ovia expressed satisfaction at the turnout, more particularly the layout of the venue which was transformed into a fairground of some sort. He walked the length and breadth of the recreational facility, stopping at a few retailer booths to drop a few kind words. The new venue accommodated more than a 100 exhibitors from different segments of the lifestyle sector. From fashion vendors to food vendors, the facility boasted a potpourri of activities. There were also on display art works as well as a game arcade for children and adults who want to indulge in the pastime. Operators in the Information and Communication Technology were not left out. Notable brands at the fair include MTN Nigeria, Airtel, and Glo. To add panache to the event, a VIP section was created for high profile personalities. Over here, top executives unwind, clink glasses and network while the DJ supply cool music vibes. Over a 1000 applicants applied for a spot in the fair this year, according to a senior management staff, Titi Awokoya. Only 300 booths however were available. The figure indicated over five per cent increase from last year which recorded only 285 retailers. Awokoyo hinted that there will be a significant increase in subsequent editions once the bank gets its permanent site. Part of the increase, Awokoya pointed out, was from the accessibility of the fair to retailers outside Lagos state. “The maiden edition was open to only retailers residing in Lagos state. But this year, we have people applying from different parts of the country. We have a special booth for Aba SMEs. We sponsored the Aba SME Fair last month so they are here to participate in the fair. We are giving our customers exposure” she said, a fact that the Brand Activation Representative (West), of NatnudO Foods, Abiodun Adekola attested to. It is the second time the brand is participating in the fair. He is exceptionally excited about the new venue because it is spacious and with the greenery food court, customers can enjoy their meals under a serene ambience. One of the reasons the brand participates in the fair according to Adekola was the class of people that it connects them to. “Zenith is associated with class so it is a good avenue to introduce our products to the elites.” However for first timers like High Prestige Bella, a hair company, they are excited to participate in the fair and look forward to greater business opportunities. For its second edition, the financial institution threw all in the ring to deliver a holistic experience for its customers. It flew in top international fashion designers like Tom Ford to walk the red runway. The three-day event will also witness leading fashion designers in the country like Mai Atafo. Each day will be crowned by music performances from tpp rated music artistes like 2Baba, Teni the Entertainer to mention a few. Attendees of the first day of the event had the opportunity to participate in masterclasses of high-profiled creative entrepreneurs like the ace photographer, Kelechi Amadi-Obi who enlightened the audience on fashion photography while veteran Nollywood actress cum apostle Eucharia Anunobi shared insights on how to stay relevant in an ever-changing industry. Launched in 2018 with the objective of supporting and creating value for customers by focusing on various aspects of their lifestyle, ‘Style by Zenith 2.0’ caps a year of all-encompassing customer lifestyle engagements by Zenith Bank. This year, the bank held its first ever music concert Aspire Music Festival. The show which was held in Lagos last September attracted a large pool of millennials. In October, the bank threw its weight behind Aba SME Fair, organised for SMEs in the Aba Fashion Market, Abia State. Awokoya said the whole idea is to build up events that will culminate in the lifestyle event. “It is a retail initiative. We are trying to bring all the entrepreneurs together under one umbrella which is in line with the apex bank of Nigeria, CBN’s Intervention Fund. We want to empower entrepreneurs so their businesses can grow.” The fair continues today with more lined-up activities and will draw its curtains on Sunday, December 1.

Ahoy there and welcome aboard the ship!
The blog is a lot of fun these days and I am always excited to put up new content. Today is a movie review day and what better movie could be here than the record-breaking wedding flick, The Wedding Party!
Name: The Wedding Party
Year of Release: 2016
Studio: EbonyLife
Cast: Adesuwa Etomi, Bankole Wellington, Sola Sobowale, Ireti Doyle, Richard Mofe Damijo, Alibaba Akpobome, Somkele Iyamah, Eyinna Nwigwe, Daniella Down, Ikechukwu Onunaka, Beverly Naya
Director: Kemi Adetiba
Synopsis: As their big day arrives, a couple’s lavish wedding plans turn into a nightmare that includes exes, fighting parents and uninvited guests.
[insert spoilers ahead logo]
If you don’t know The Wedding Party, I suggest that you open your Netflix account and watch it ASAP. This is one movie that actually shows how a typical Nigerian wedding runs and I for one, was amazed at how much I could relate to some of the events which unfolded over the course of nearly two hours.
A BIT OF CONTEXT:
In Nigeria, weddings are huge, all-inclusive family affairs. No matter your social standing, when you’re getting hitched, expect to be throwing a carnival-like bash for your family, friends, church members, long lost relatives and the assorted ‘mogbomoyas’ (gate crashers). Weddings here are typically lavish and everyone is expected to pitch in any way to support the couple. Regular weddings are like one-day festivals but upper-class weddings can span days and involve several parties happening simultaneously. Everyone is expected to be uniform in the native ‘Aso-ebi’ (family cloth) and appear as a strong unit. Both families usually choose two different and sometimes complementary colors to mark the occasion. As Nigerians incorporate ethnic customs in their weddings, different aso-ebis are often allotted for different parts of the wedding ceremonies. We like to dance and sing and make merry a lot and our weddings always reflect that.
Now, back to the review…
The Wedding Party is a Nigerian designer’s couture dream and I’m not surprised about that as a top designer was hooked for the characters’ costumes. Mai Atafo, a celebrated bridal designer, was behind the amazing looks of the entire wedding party and to be honest, it was something. Bride Dunni’s wedding outfit was a work of art and so were those of the bridesmaids. Maid of Honor Yemisi was stunning in her fuchsia pink gown.
The Wedding Party is not just a story about a couple making it official- it’s a larger conversation about what occurs when two people from different ethnic groups in Nigeria decide to get married. It explores what happens when two different cultures attempt to merge and the friction resulting from the collision. The ethnic groups represented, The Yoruba and the Igbo, are two of the largest ethnic groups within Nigeria’s borders and historically, have not been the best of neighbors. But the film had a larger message, one which resonated with people within inter-ethnic unions- it was possible to achieve synergy. Inasmuch as the bride and groom, Dunni and Dozie were the focus of the movie, it was through their mothers, Lady Onwuka and Mrs. Coker that the story of inter-tribal differences was told. It’s a pretty story with real world consequences written into it.
Story aside, let’s look at the costumes!
Igbo
Yoruba
The first thing to note is the difference between what the families of the bride and groom wear. The bride’s family is Yoruba and the groom’s Igbo (in real life, the actress who plays the bride is Edo and the actor who plays the groom is Yoruba. Also, they are an actual married couple. So you see, life does imitate art sometimes!). This had to be accurately represented in what they wore. Socially, the Yoruba are known as a merry and flamboyant group and though their iros (wrappers), bubas (blouses), geles (head ties) and agbadas (large embroidered overshirts) were not as bright as what I usually see every weekend, the designer still tried to convey the family’s wealth as well as their culture clearly and it was very well done. For the Onwukas, the same appearance of wealth had to still be relayed to the audience. Being an Igbo family, thick embroidered wrappers and heavy beaded blouses as well as statement jewelry had to be the go-to for the mother of the groom and her friends. Although equally as merry and flamboyant as their Yorubas counterparts, the Onwuka family received the toning down treatment as Lady Onwuka’s character showed a clear distaste for extravagant shows of wealth as opposed to proclaiming her family’s riches through snide remarks. Nevertheless, both families were beautifully attired for the movie.
Now, for the bridal party, I’m going to split this up into three groups: the bride and her bridesmaids, the groom and groomsmen, and the exes.
For the bride, Mai Atafo had the wedding gown come as a detachable set consisting of an off the shoulder cape with a cathedral length train and a sleeveless column gown with a bejeweled belt and 3-D appliqué. It was a most daring style, leading the way in changing the way Nigerian brides approached bridal styling. Light, easy and sort of breezy, the gown accentuated its wearer’s slim build, bringing out her form and enhancing it as she moved down the aisle. It was a work of art, the same way the Maid of Honor’s dress was. That fuchsia gown is the ultimate dinner party inspiration, what with its cascading off the shoulder lapel and white diamond-like appliqué. The rest of the bridesmaids had dresses just as good, in fuchsia of course and appliquéd with tiny multicolored flowers.
For the grooms, Mai Atafo did not disappoint. Originally a menswear designer, he put his signature touch in the suits worn by the groom’s side of the bridal party. Unlike in a lot of wedding pictures I’ve seen, the groom and his boys had clear distinctions- black for Dozie and blue for Sola and the rest of the gang. The suits were wonderfully made, adding to the air of refinement these upper-class men already possessed (except Sola. He was a basket case).
Now for the exes. In this area, we need to split it into two parts: Rosie (Dozie’s ex-girlfriend) and Small Chops (Chief Onwuka’s mistress). Both of them gatecrashed the wedding and they made sure they were dressed to send clear messages to the people they came for. Rosie’s reception outfit was a lesson in Modern Bride 101. Daring back cut, layered flounces and an off the shoulder neckline (Mai Atafo must really like off the shoulder wedding gear, phew!) were given to a character who came to upstage the bride on her wedding day. The message of ‘Dozie, you don’t know what you are missing’ was clear and having the dress in white gave it the extra slap it needed when Dunni and Rosie eventually clashed. In that scene, the differences between both women was clear just from looking at how they were dressed: Dunni- sweet, girlish and innocent and Rosie- daring, provocative and evil. That was a fantastic visual contrast and one of the best I’ve ever seen in white. Small Chops on the other hand, came with the intention of disrupting Chief and Lady Onwuka’s peace of mind and she dressed the part.
Small Chops (real name unknown as Chief Onwuka had the original idea of disguising her as finger food) arrived in a goddess-like style. Haltered cowl, empire waistline and a back whose movements would make a wedding veil jealous, Small Chops did what she came to do in style. Unfortunately, her triumph was short-lived and she was pushed out of the gathering before any more punches were pulled. So long, Small Chops- we may not have known your name, but your dress was a front to back hit all the way. Shout out to your fascinator too.
And there we have it, folks- my review of the wedding party and its style moments. In general, much of the story was playing a fast and loose game but it made for an easy, enjoyable and relatable viewing. This is just one Nigerian’s point of view anyway so go watch and tell me what you think about it.
Until next time,
Ciao!

We ALL know how important accessories are. With that in mind I decided to acquire my certification in Nail Technology, and to develop my own line of hand painted nails. After premiering my first couple nail collections, I expanded my line to offer other handmade accessories…Although I have chosen a career in design, music still plays a huge part in my life. I carefully curate a playlist for each collection that helps to set the mood, and to communicate my feelings and the message behind each piece.” Renee offers playful, music inspired pieces, as she says, “produced from a playlist of emotions.“
