Two New SUVs From Mahindra South Africa Showcased At The 2023 SA Auto Week
Held at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, Gauteng, the SA Auto Week is South Africa’s premier industry event. It offers vehicle manufacturers like Mahindra an opportunity to discuss issues facing the local and global industry while also showcasing its newest innovations and vehicles.
The two models on display, now available at Mahindra Midrand, the all-new Scorpio-N and XUV700, physically manifest the spirit of the brand at SAAW 23 where the industry celebrates its South African manufacturing capability and the high-tech new products that will spearhead its advances into a new era of motoring.
Both new Mahindra models bring a host of new technologies to a market used to more budget-focused options.
For instance, the Mahindra XUV700 offers features such as a 26 cm Superscreen that incorporates the digital dashboard and a host of entertainment features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The infotainment system is connected to a 12-speaker 3D SONY sound system for the most immersive sound experience.
This model uses its array of cameras to offer a 360-degree view of the vehicle from inside, while also doubling up as a traffic camera while driving.
The Scorpio-N, in turn, brings real-world off-road capabilities to the adventure SUV segment with its 400 Nm turbodiesel engine and adaptive terrain response system that adjusts its operation based on the road conditions in the off-road capable Scorpio-N.
“Having laid a solid foundation over the past 19 years, we now shift gears and focus on expanding our range of Authentic SUVs and Authentic bakkies. This will not only help us to maintain the momentum that has made us the fastest-growing brand in 2022 but will also give us a varied product offering that will appeal to virtually all consumer groups,” says Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa.
With reference to the solid foundation that Mahindra has laid in South Africa, Rajesh mentions the recent investment in a new state-of-the-art warehouse in Linbro Park, Gauteng, and its growing network of dealers that currently stand at 74 showrooms covering all nine provinces and every major city and town - like our favourite Mahindra dealer in Midrand, Gauteng.
Speaking on the sidelines of the SA Auto Week, Rajesh also highlighted the significant investment in improving the Mahindra Assembly Facility at the Dube TradePort in KwaZulu-Natal.
The facility, which produced its first proudly South African Pik Up in 2018, has since been upgraded to include a comprehensive post-production testing track, a modern painting facility and a more streamlined production line.
With these upgrades, the assembly facility can produce in excess of 500 Pik Ups a month across the entire product range, from the entry-level Pik Up S4 Dropside to the coveted Pik Up Karoo Dusk, Dawn and Storm with their six-speed automatic transmissions.
“Our next step will be to introduce special edition models of the XUV300, Scorpio-N and Pik Up. The last mentioned will be expanded with the introduction of a single-cab Pik Up Karoo Dawn with a 4×4 drivetrain.
“We have also listened to the calls by Mahindra fans and will soon introduce a special Mahindra Scorpio-N Adventure Edition, complete with custom-built approach and departure bumpers, off-road focused tyres and suspension and a number of interior additions.
“Lastly, our range will soon include a Mahindra XUV300 XPREZ. This panel van version is custom-built for South Africa and will offer safe, cost-effective and reliable transport for businesses looking for a commercial vehicle in the sub-one-tonne market,” says Rajesh.

Tata Nexon Facelift Test Mule Spotted In The Wild Once Again
● Tata began testing the Nexon facelift in early 2023.
● It is the second major refresh while the first facelift came in early 2020.
● Exterior updates include a new alloy wheel design, vertically stacked LED headlights and connected LED taillights.
● Inside, it will have a new steering wheel, updated upholstery and centre console.
● Likely to get with a 10.25-inch touchscreen, up to six airbags and 360-degree camera.
● Expected to be launched in early 2024 with prices starting at Rs 8 lakh (ex-showroom)
Since the early months of 2023, there have been ample sightings of the Tata Nexon facelift undergoing testing, with the camouflage slowly reducing as time goes on. We have now spotted another test mule of the updated SUV on tests – although still draped in heavy camouflage – suggesting it’s inching closer to being production-ready. This will be the second major overhaul for the sub-4m SUV after the 2020 update.
Design Details Revealed So Far
Its profile is unlikely to get any major design changes save for the revised alloy wheels. At the back, the updated Nexon will have a reshaped boot, a tweaked bumper and connected LED taillights. The facelifted Nexon will also come with dynamic turn indicators as seen on a test mule recently. All these design changes will likely make their way on the Nexon’s EV versions as well
Design changes on the Nexon facelift will be carried forward inside the cabin as well. Some of the interior revisions include a Tata Avinya-like steering wheel (with a rectangular display in the centre), violet upholstery, and a slightly redone centre console.
Features on board the facelifted Tata Nexon will likely include a digital driver’s display, a 10.25-inch touchscreen system, paddle shifters, wireless phone charging, ventilated front seats, and auto climate control.
Passenger safety is expected to be taken care of by up to six airbags, 360-degree camera, ISOFIX child seat anchorages, and a reversing camera.
We are expecting Tata to launch the Nexon facelift sometime early next year at an expected starting price of Rs 8 lakh (ex-showroom). It will continue to compete with the Maruti Brezza, Renault Kiger, Kia Sonet, Nissan Magnite, Mahindra XUV300 and Hyundai Venue, while also taking on crossover SUVs like the Maruti Fronx and Citroen C3.

Mahindra New Cars: Everything You Need to Know
Introduction:
With the Scorpio-N, Mahindra has surpassed all other SUV manufacturers in India. Yet, the influx of new Mahindra vehicles is still ongoing. A detailed list of the Mahindra lineup for 2023 and 2024 can be found here.
1. Mahindra XUV400 EV:
The first of many Mahindra New Cars scheduled for that year, the XUV400, would be made available by Mahindra in January 2023. There is more to Mahindra's upcoming electric vehicle in India than just a plug-in XUV300. Both in terms of size and power, it is more substantial. A Li-ion battery with a 39.4 kilowatt-hour capacity powers one motor.
Maximum horsepower and torque are rated at 147.5 hp and 310 Nm, respectively. The electric SUV can reach up to 150 kilometers per hour and can cover an acceleration distance of 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 8.3 seconds.
A fully charged Mahindra XUV400 has a maximum range that has been validated by ARAI of 456 kilometres. The Mahindra New Vehicles will compete in the market for electric vehicles, just like the Tata Nexon EV. It can be charged to 100% using a 50 kW DC fast charger in 50 minutes, but it will take 6 hours and 30 minutes to reach 80% using a 7.2 kW/32A outlet. Three distinct "driving modes" for the forthcoming electric Vehicle will either extend range or speed. Having fun, moving rapidly, and not being afraid of the unknown are a few of these traits. Some of the highlights include six airbags, a sunroof, a 7-inch touchscreen entertainment system, a rear-view camera, and more than 60 different networking options.
2. Mahindra eKUV100:
The Mahindra KUV100 will replace the KUV90, a B1-segment hatchback with SUV styling that was discontinued due to poor sales. Mahindra now seems poised to give the KUV100 new life by turning its slowly selling vehicle into an electric vehicle (EV).
3. Mahindra Thar 5-Door:
The Scorpio and Bolero, two of Mahindra's best-known off-road vehicles, have a reputation for dependability and toughness. The Thar, however, distinguishes out from the competition in terms of both performance and looks. The new Thar has been one of India's most well-liked vehicles since its release. Sometime around 2023, the new Thar 5-Door variant will be available. The 2.0L Turbo-petrol and 2.2L diesel engines in the current Thar 5-Door may or may not receive an improved tune, but you anticipate they will be retained.
4. Mahindra XUV Aero:
The Mahindra XUV Aero first debuted at the 2016 Auto Expo. Mahindra eventually abandoned the idea in favor of the XUV700 and the Scorpio-N. Therefore, the design was never put into production. However, the crossover SUV may be released by the end of 2023. While the XUV Aero concept looks like the Mahindra XUV 500, the production model may take design cues from the XUV700 and the Born Electric idea. The coupe-crossover body design will continue to be used.
5. Mahindra XUVe8 (XUV700 EV):
Even though the Mahindra XUV700 has already achieved remarkable success, the company is working on a new version of its best-selling flagship model. The Mahindra XUV700 EV, which is slated to be on sale in India by the end of 2019, has the potential to be the country's first fully electric sport utility vehicle. The new model will have the same high-end features as the XUV700 AX7L. Digital gauge cluster, automatic dual-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, and a 360-degree camera just a few of the goodies that come standard on this particular model.
6. Mahindra Bolero Neo Plus:
Mahindra reintroduced the TUV300, this time as the Bolero Neo, in July 2021. Since the Mahindra New Cars release, it has been widely expected that the larger TUV300 Plus will be phased out in favor of the Bolero Neo Plus. It is now anticipated that the same will debut in the first quarter of 2023. The huge SUV may be had with as many as nine seats, making it a tough people carrier. The Bolero Neo Plus should have a refined version of the dependable 2.2L diesel engine seen in the Scorpio Classic under the hood. The powerplant will be paired with a standard 6-speed manual gearbox.

What’s New Since The Mahindra XUV300 Specification Update?
Mahindra SA introduced minor updates to the Mahindra XUV300 for sale - a compact SUV that was launched here in 2019.
The ivory and beige interior of the India-built vehicle has been replaced by a black dashboard and black seat upholstery, after feedback from customers who called for a darker interior with a more upmarket look that attracts fewer smudges when travelling with children.
The darkened dash is still made of hard plastic instead of the classier-feeling soft-touch type, but that’s not unexpected in a budget range priced between R240,000 and R350,000.
A further improvement sees the infotainment system’s display growing from 7 inches to 9 inches, and all models with the touchscreen offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.
Despite the budget prices, the cars are decently kitted in a competitive segment that includes popular models like the Toyota Urban Cruiser, Ford EcoSport and Suzuki Vitara Brezza.
The XUV300’s range-topping W8 grade offers high-end items like dual-zone climate control, navigation, reversing camera, leather-clad steering wheel, tyre pressure monitor, sunroof, self-dimming rear-view mirror, automatic headlamps and window wipers, as well as seven airbags.
Standard safety across the six-model range comprises at least two airbags, electronic stability control, ABS brakes, and ISOFIX seat mounts for child restraints. The XUV300 became the first car in Africa to achieve a maximum of five stars in Global NCAP crash tests.
The range continues to offer both petrol and diesel options, and all models are six-speed manuals with front-wheel drive.
The turbo petrol is a 1.2l unit with outputs of 81kW and 200Nm of torque. The turbo diesel is a four-cylinder 1.5l with 85.8kW, and with 300Nm it offers the best torque in its segment. It is also one of the most frugal vehicles in the category with its claimed 4.8l / 100km.
PRICING AND WARRANTY INFO
Pricing includes a five-year/150,000km warranty. The W4 and W4 SE have three-year/50,000km service plans; all other versions have five-year/90,000km service plans.

What You Need To Know About Mahindra's Compact SUV
Why The Mahindra XUV300 Is The SUV You've Been Waiting For
In SA collisions are almost a norm - drivers change lanes and only then indicate, while others fail to keep to a safe following distance, so one’s driving expertise is a secondary factor on South African roads.
To be safe, you need to be in a car that has passed the crash safety test with flying colours. So, when I got a confirmation that I will be putting the Mahindra XUV300, W8, petrol variation to the test, I quickly googled the car, and the first thing that stood out for me was this: its safety credentials remain unmatched in its class.
It is needless to say that nobody leaves their homes with the hope that they will get into a car accident. But getting to your destination without a scratch on the car or losing your cool with fellow motorists is an underplayed win.
Parting ways with just over R300,000 for my protection in a car is not too bad at all. This Mahindra was tested by the Global New Car Assessment Programme for both India and Africa, the XUV300 set a new benchmark for crash safety in its class in Africa, and it boasts a score of 16.42 out of 17 for adult protection, giving it five out of five stars.
And if you drive with your little one sitting comfortably at the back, the car received four out of five stars for child safety.
I am generally not a fan of compact SUVs. They tend to straddle the line of giving you little of everything, and not entirely anything at the same time. That is my general view on compact SUVs, irrespective of the brand. Most of them don’t have enough boot space, and they give you just enough legroom, but you wish the people in the backseat would have enough legroom too.
But South Africans love compact SUVs, and they continue to buy them. That market is one of the toughest and most saturated. The Mahindra XUV300 competes in a rapidly growing segment with rivals such as the Hyundai Venue, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Mazda CX30, Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Chery Tiggo Pro 4, Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger, Haval H1, to name just a few.
With the XUV300, I thought the interior could have had a more luxurious finish to it, and less of the plastic feel. But the feature of an updated nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system makes you smile again. The new system is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, making it easy to just plug and play.
With fuel prices always going up and down, the XUV300’s fuel capacity is also equal to most hatchbacks, taking in 42 litres. I consistently got a consumption of 6.4l /100km, but this could be due to the traffic between Sandton and Centurion in the morning and afternoon.
I still don’t understand why this car has a six-gear transmission; the five gears are enough. But it’s a head-turner. When I shared a few pictures of the car on my WhatsApp status, friends and family couldn’t outright guess the brand of the car. They named the competitor brands and were surprised by the beautiful design by Mahindra.
The Mahindra XUV300 is a car that is reliable and has a beautifully distinguishable design. And you are guaranteed the highest level of safety, should the undesirable happen, especially if you are going to be on the road daily.
