V. Puppies

This is a harder hc to do in my style of offering vignettes relevant to the ask. So instead, please have some pic spam by verse.

1. Most Modern Verses Beth loves dogs as much as she does any other animal, which is to say by large degrees more than she likes people. However, living in an apartment in Brooklyn however large that might be {it’s true, her apartment in Bay Ridge takes up the entire 5th floor}, and with the kinds of hours she works, she chooses not to have a dog. Instead, she keeps company with a rescued stray {who was neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped} that she named Houdini because the cat is an escape artist of the first order. He is known as a flame point Siamese, though that’s a bit of a misnomer since his particular breed is a variant, and is more properly a colour-point short hair.

Houdini is twenty pounds of languid feline malevolence. He absolutely loathes other males whether they are toms or humans, and considers Beth to be his human and no one else’s. The only exception to this is her hanai Uncle Lewis. When Beth has to be away from home for more than three days, Houdini gets to go visit.

~*~ 2. A Little South of Heaven {Main verse}

Upon the death of his companion of almost twenty years, Beth offered Uncle Lewis custody of Houdini as she was not planning on coming back to New York from her trip to Louisiana. Both cat and man accepted. Her future husband already had pets of his own, which while they lived together, prevented Beth from really getting any others, though his are technically...the outdoor types. Beth is not exactly sure how old Ben and Gloria are, but they have likely outlived the ‘normal’ lifespan of their species. And while normally they don’t spend too much time in one another’s company by virtue of their nature, they do tend to clutch in the spring. Beth is also not sure if Ben’s the proud papa but she assumes. And while she absolutely loves them, she was pretty sure neither one would be allowed to cuddle in bed.

3. Urca Aquarium and Research Facility Verse {Black Sails AU}

Dr Riley is a marine biologist who studies sharks under Dr Hal Gates at the Urca Facility in Hawai’i, possibly the most learned man in the field. She doesn’t have pets per se, as people think of them, but she enjoys a unique friendship with the resident seals, Otto the octopus, and Kailani the of the largest female Galapagos sharks in their waters. For her birthday, she was given a companion to keep her busy in her office during extended hours, by her colleague, Dr William Manderly. She’s sure he hates her, but she loves her little friend. Her little purple neocardinia does not quite have a proper name yet, but is happily established in his tank.

4. London Calling Verses {Legend/The Kray Twins AUs}

Ron Kray, publican and boxer and yes, gangster, recognised something in Beth that lead him to believe that like him, she is a dog person. And she is. And feeling her intrinsic loneliness which can be hard to overcome when one is neurodivergent, he gave her one of his prised babies, a pup from Miss Mo’s litter, from Ron’s beloved Claude. Both are Cane Corso’s, although Claude the Mastiff is not entirely pure bred.

Beth instantly took to the little blue eyed, grey baby and named her Noe which in Hawai’ian means “mist”.

Ron is properly the bestest proud granddad there could be. And when Beth’s visa runs out, they make the decision to leave Noe with him and the rest of her family, that she might not suffer the trauma of quarantine in a strange land when she’s never spent a day far from home. When she grows up though she won’t be as large as her papa, she will still out weigh and be nearly as tall if not taller than Beth when standing on her hind legs. For now, though, she’s only just little.

5. You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive {Justified AUs}

What do you say about a girl you find upset and bloody in the middle of the road, armed with a very serious fire-arm and a damp, equally bloody tire-iron with an unconscious man almost three times her size laying there unmoving, while in her clearly wrecked car you’re being menaced by possibly the world’s cutest opossum? That she calls Anakin, and insists is the most polite young man she’s ever known? That she’s a doctor with the CDC who studies infectious diseases, and that rescued Anakin {yes, named after Skywalker, the Chosen One} from a group of laboratory test subjects?

If you are Raylan Givens, US Marshal, you call it “Wednesday.”

And the more time you spend together most definitely not in the pursuit of fugitives and justice, the more you find yourself coming to like said possum. Even if there are jokes about him being lunch. You don’t even mind when he stows away and ends up at work with you. You DO draw the line at him trying to take and make a nest out of your hat.

6. Across the Universe {SW AU}

She blinks. Anakin has practically vibrated through the floor of the lowest level of the Temple, currently a not often used basement for storage, with commingled apprehension and excitement. Any more and they will be below her cave to the sprawling underground ruins they’ve only recently discovered.

“Well, I mean... technically... he’s your...ah...loth wolf man hybrid...thing.” “He has a name, Keni.” “Little Night Jedi speaks truth.” Her eyes roll in the direction of...their...new...ah... yes. “Eighteen.” Which isn’t exactly a name.

It...he...moves towards her and very personally smells her.

“Stick is unhappy.” She impales Anakin with a single look. And all the Force floods with emotions all at once, too messy to separate into constituent parts.

“If Master Yoda finds out... we are so very fucked.”

We, because they are everything together.

Anakin relaxes and puts a hand on ....Eighteen’s arm.

I. She envies Quentin’s imagination, so florid and unconstrained by a lifetime of being told that it was part of what made you undesirable to the world in general. The intuition it gives him to leap and bound beyond most other people’s capacity is astounding, and even makes her, with a genius IQ feel a little dumb sometimes. It doesn’t make him weird or dysfunctional. It makes him special.II. For all that Beth is a natural born healer, for all that her magick lends itself to it, she can’t fix Quentin. Maybe it is because part of her doesn’t really think he’s broken. The sorrow and the depression that weighs him down gives him a kind soul and a wisdom that he will some day need. But he isn’t any more shattered than she is, except that…he doesn’t see it. And nothing she says can convince him he’s not.III. She worries sometimes, especially when he’s spending all his time with the physical kids, that Quentin drinks a little too much. And she knows what that is, she watched her brother try to numb his pain and slowly killing himself before his…accident. As the sister Quentin never had, she wants to say something. To maybe temper him just a little, not make him stop self-medicating but just…slow down a little. As his friend, she doesn’t know how. As a person she worries, and as a magician, Beth is ready to grow him a new liver. She won’t lose him, too.IV. Sometimes, when she can’t quite make herself get out of bed, Beth thinks she’s made Quentin up. That he is a figment of her imagination, that he’s maybe the her she wishes she could be. He’s beautiful and well loved, he’s smart and he’s quirky and people ~Margo not counting~ don’t hate him.

She acknowledges Quentin with a small nod. But it doesn’t sit well with her, the idea or the strength of his conviction. Her eyes are dark when she slips her glasses off and looks at him, really looking at him. There’s a storm in that gaze with a thousand thoughts arcing and snapping in the verdant depths, an alien sky untapped.
