Kind of controversial but why are people acting like TSATS is Rick Riordan's first queer book? Like Magnus chase who? Trials of Apollo?

Warning ⚠️: Long rant under the cut. It's not very tsats friendly so please scroll if you don't want to read.

Idk it just feels like sometimes the fandom doesn't really view queer rep as valid unless it centers around romance. Completely biased as a toa fan but toa had so much rep. The bi mc, the gay geysers, the kindly old lesbian couple taking in unwanted kids, ace characters, characters struggling with comphet, characters crushing on people of the same gender and none of it being taken as something out of the ordinary. It just wasn't centred around romance.

The toa fandom has always been pretty small and chill with activity spiking everytime a new book releases. Then suddenly when Tower of Nero came out there were so many people. So what changed, what brought in so many people who weren't even interested in the premise of the book?

It was Solangelo.

I like solangelo as much as the next person (minus the year of seething rage when they were dominating the toa tag) but the way that people discount an amazing series about change, growth and overcoming abuse with some of the best casual queer rep I've seen and consider the only thing of value being a minor mlm couple with a few pages of screentime leaves a pretty bad taste in my mouth.

Magnus chase is another book. Alex fierro isn't perfect rep (stop calling Alex slurs holy fuck) but it was revolutionary to have a gender fluid character in a children's series and this was back in 2016. Fierrochase is pretty popular but I wonder sometimes if Alex and Magnus would be as popular as they are if they never got together. They're still not as popular as solangelo but in good faith that might be because people became too fatigued to read mcga.

It just feels sometimes that these books are viewed as lesser queer books just because there's no shipping or it's not a (I'm so sorry don't kill me ) heart stopper esque gay couple. Idk if im taking this too personally as a potentially ace *slides nsfw art under desk* person whose gender is wonky but it's just my thoughts on this.

But I just feel like the focus should be on the countries banning and censoring the book instead of people with perfectly valid criticism of it. There are so many of his books with queer rep and most of the criticism I've seen have come from LGBTQIA+ people that like these books or at least put the same energy into scrutinizing them too. Idk why people assume anything bad said about TSATS was a bad faith reading done out of homophobia.

All that being said, tsats is definitely being marketed as the first queer book. It's banned not very accessible in my country despite all the others going through- which sucks. It's being treated like the first queer focused book Rick has written and it's coming out at a bad time for everyone but especially people in the US apparently. So I understand why any reactions would be taken as the fandoms reaction to the first queer book.

So who is more homophobic? The person who doesn't like a queer book or the person who holds a queer romance as the pinacle of queer? The answer : no clue man it's complicated and it's sucks that we're all so on edge in these trying times that we automatically assume the worst. There's nuance that a smarter person than me can elaborate on but I am not he.

Sorry for writing something so divisive during pride month but it is a conservation that should be had and what better month than one celebrating queer identity and representation. Hope everyone has a great pride month and stays safe.

I gotta ask. What's the Miscarcand AU?

Let me preface this by saying that I have thought about this ask since I first got it, but school and life are as painful as a Dremora Valkynaz charging full force from the depths of the Deadlands.

"Shall We Kiss in Miscarcand?" is an Oblivion era AU that stems from my love of all things Indiana Jones and The Mummy with a dash of Supernatural-esque monster hunting and reluctant friends to lovers slow burn because I am a romantic first and a human being second.

The story follows Fighters Guild Journeyman Avarenya as she investigates a mysterious orb retrieved from an Ayleid ruin during a job. Made of an indeterminate white stone, the orb is marked in an unknown Daedric dialect. Seemingly meeting a dead-end with the Skingrad Mages Guild, Avarenya is unexpectedly directed to an ex-member who was known to study the Daedric scripts by Druja. This leads Avarenya to Kvatch, where she meets Brother Martin. Much to Avarenya's dismay, however, the Priest of Akatosh is vehemently against helping her as soon as any mention of Daedra or study of dark magic is brought up.

Out of ideas, Avarenya stays the night in Kvatch, only to wake in the middle of the orb being stolen by an unknown thief. Avarenya chases the thief through the streets of Kvatch, but loses them in the dark. Things continue to go poorly for Avarenya as her attempt to report the theft leads to her arrest as a suspected Daedra worshipper! Then, quite unexpectedly, Brother Martin comes and bails her out of jail under the pretense of Avarenya hunting down Daedra worshippers rather than being one herself. Martin agrees to help Avarenya hunt down the orb and decipher it once it's found.

What follows are a series of adventures as Avarenya and Martin travel throughout Cyrodiil, recovering ancient artifacts, battling vampires, necromancers, and Daedra, and chasing down a mystery that could lead to the resurrection of an ancient divine order and the unraveling of a plot to invade Tamriel from Oblivion itself.

The story starts in 3E428, not long after the events of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Although the Oblivion Crisis itself is still a few years off, the premature meeting and companionship of the Hero of Kvatch and Martin Septim means that some things may go in a wildly different direction than they do in the canon version of the Main Quest. At its core, "Shall We Kiss in Miscarcand?" is an action-adventure/romance that goes wildly off the rails from most other Oblivion AUs out there.

Fun Facts!

Martin and Avarenya's son Magnus originates from "Shall We Kiss in Miscarcand?" Before coming up with this AU, Martin and my HoK had twin daughters. What this means is that with the advent of Magnus, Martin and Avarenya are now Leara Rose-blade's great-grandparents, rather than her grandparents.

At least in this AU, Avy is heavily Rick O'Connell coded, while Martin is Evelyn Carnahan coded. Please understand how much I love The Mummy. I have an incomplete pitch for a Miraculous AU too.

The title was pseudo inspired by that time eight years ago when I watched Ouran Highschool Host Club. No, I cannot remember the song. Yes, I have only seen that show once. No, I'm not looking the theme back up. It's just meant to be a comical little thing, you know?

If I were to make a cover for this, it would resemble an Indiana Jones movie poster. Additional similarities to Indiana Jones would include travels to exotic (eg: Morrowind, Skyrim) locations, freaky time shenanigans, screwing with gods, Avarenya bringing a spell to a sword fight, and Martin being afraid of snakes or something. Oh, and probably rival treasure hunters who would use their discoveries for material gain rather than the advancement or preservation of knowledge.

Their love confession would totally happen in Miscarcand while recovering the Great Welkynd Stone. Obviously.

The Harry Potter series

....I'm in the HP fandom, so that's probably 0 surprise. Also feels icky due to being written by Terf McTerfington. Buuuuuut. Well. The universe needs balance and HP's power was so great it could only be stopped by Great Evil, or so I like to tell myself.

The series was published in the U.S. when I was 7. I was already a big reader. I was a big reader from the moment I could read at all. But HP was the first series I fell well and truly in love with. I discovered fanfiction at 11, and started writing it at 13. The story and this fandom were there through the worst moments of my life. I'm not sure it will ever not be important to me.

The Percy Jackson series (Rick Riordan)

Honestly, I can't lie, I'm a big sucker for kids' books. They're just fun, dang it. Great literature? No. But I don't read to impress, I read to have a good time, and Percy Jackson is a good time. Also all the related series. Magnus Chase? Trials of Apollo? The Kane Chronicles? Yes yes yes BRING THEM TO ME.

There's a Potter-esque feel to the PJO series. Dark haired green eyed hero who didn't know he had magical abilities? Also the Cabins make me think of the Houses, even though it's more parentage than traits. It's a vibe, okay? And on top of that...mythology???? I'm a big ole mythology nerd, especially for Greek mythology. And let me tell you, I inhaled those books. And I still love them a lot, actually.

The Twilight series (Stephenie Meyer)

To round out the list of "stories Little Danni loved" is Twilight. Yes, I was a Twi-hard in junior high and high school. What's funny is all the modern "this is problematic because Edward is stalking Bella, and also he's a vampire and immortal and there's an age gap!" jabbering is probably what sold me on the story to begin with. Listen: I like what I like, okay? Also: vampire + human? Does that count as monsterfucking? Idk but it's at least different species which ticks some boxes, okay?

Honestly everyone talking about how effed up Twilight is was just a lightbulb moment for me of like "oh. No wonder I was so into it."

Twilight also played a role in my writing journey! In high school I joined a Twilight themed RPG site on proboards. I created a mega evil vampire named Danna Deville, whose face cast was Hayden Panettierre. This weirdly made me super popular because no one else was creating/playing villainous characters. Let me tell you, it did loads for my self esteem. Also it's funny to think about all those old friendships born of "hey let's RP together. I really want your character to torture my character."

Mistborn (Brandon Sanderson)

This one I have big opinions on. On the one hand, I really enjoy Brandon Sanderson's stories. On the other hand, while his magic systems are often highly praised, I hate them. Hate, loathe, and despise them. I'll not say more than that. I don't like to hate on things. And my partner really loves Brandon Sanderson and his magic systems. (I'm just over here muttering about "they eat metal" and have to actively not think about it.) It's just not my jam. I much prefer softer magic systems. Hard magic systems tend to throw me a bit. But Brandon Sanderson sure knows how to tell a story, dang it. He's super creative and smart and has these big sweeping ideas, with all these twists and turns! His worldbuilding is also insanely good.

Mistborn (Era 1) is probably my favorite of his works. One as an overall story (Vin, my love!) But also the connection to my Eddie.

You see, when my partner and I first met, it was in the book section of an entertainment store. Where we stood in the aisles and talked for hours. My very first impression was "who is this goofy man?" and I left the interaction fully smitten. And anxious, awkward lady that I am, my grand plan was to read the books he'd been raving about to have something to talk about. Idle chit chat? No can do. Book talk? That I can do! So I read Mistborn, for a start. Then worked my way through other book recommendations. And now that goofy nerd is mine. All's well that ends well!

The Wheel of Time series (Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson)

Once I worked my way through Brandon Sanderson's books, I moved onto The Wheel of Time, which was much more up my alley! I could not put those books down. (At least until I hit The Slog, at which point I still couldn't put them down, but I was mostly charging through waiting for it to get good again.) This was also the first time I tried to not look up spoilers before reading a book. (Blasphemy, I know, blah blah. Look: I have anxiety. Spoilers make my life easier and happier, okay?) Eddie is very staunchly anti-spoiler, so I did my best to try a spoiler-free experience. I made it most of the way through. Towards the end I accidentally spoiled myself on a big event. It was a bit foolishly done but I'd consulted google to refresh my memory on an event from an earlier book, and my Google excursions warned me of a few deaths ahead of time. Whoops. On the whole, though, me making it 10+ books with no spoilers was pretty dang impressive.

Also the book series is great. And I'm side-eying the show a bit. Just a little bit.

(Bonus: the band Blind Guardian has a song called "Wheel of Time" about the books and it's 10/10. At least if you like symphonic metal, which I do.) (Oh, "Ride Into Obsession" from the same album is also WoT inspired.)

Flowers in the Attic series (V. C. Andrews)

The fact that I read this series as a child might explain a lot. Also you should know my mother gave me these books to read. Child abuse, forced imprisonment, murder, and incest? Sign me up! It's all sortsa messed up and dark and to this day it's still my # 1 guilty pleasure series. I like...just don't care. You can tell me how badly written it is or how problematic it is, I don't care. This is the book equivalent to eating a whole bag of Flamin' Hot Cheetos while watching true crime videos. This is indulgence, my friends. I'm having a great time, please leave me in peace.

The Song of Achilles (Madeline Miller)

Gorgeous, amazing, perfect, wonderful. Patroclus/Achilles forever. Ouch my heart. God it's beautiful. MORE GREEK MYTHOLOGY OF COURSE. Also all of Madeline Miller's stuff is stellar. (Circe and Galatea!!!! Read those, too!!!!) I have every feeling on planet earth about this one.

Widecare trilogy (Phillippa Gregory)

Beatrice Lacey is wonderful and amazing and also really messed up in the head. Historical fiction. Little Beatrice is in love with her family's land, Wideacre. And is HORRIFIED and OFFENDED when she realizes that, as a girl, she will not only not inherit, but will have to leave one day???? Cuz as a lady it is her purpose in life to get married and pop out babies???? But Beatrice is ambitious, clever, manipulative, and passionate and she doesn't let lady parts or the patriarchy keep her down!! And by that, she goes to rather dark and taboo extremes. Which I admire and respect. (I grew up watching horror films and reading darkfic. Trust me, I was having a great time with this story.)

Wuthering Heights (Emily Bronte)

I stg this book gets no respect. Is this a really toxic, dysfunctional romance? Absolutely. What else do you want in a story???? Oh OBSESSIVE, PASSIONATE, UNDYING LOVE??? GOT THAT, TOO. This book lives in my heart and soul. I can fully quote Heathcliff's speech to Catherine ("I cannot life without my life, I cannot live without my soul") on demand. I have read this book to death, through resurrection, and back to death.

...also it's hella Snarry, isn't it? That explains a lot.

(Also shoutout to other teenage obsessions: The Hunger Games and Divergent. Also the Three Dark Crowns series???? Loved that. Hannibal???? Yes please. Dan Brown's Robert Langdon series??? MORE! Oh and R.L. Stein's The Nightmare Room were the books of my childhood. Oh! Oh oh! And another thing! The Wonder by Emma Donoghue????? Incredible. Blow my mind. Oh and She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb is another case of "this is a very dark messed up story that a family member gave me that I inhaled because I really liked messed up stuff, actually.") Avala: She stole my power… She was once kind to the forest but- I thought it was in a warlock way but she took it- Zara deduces that this is some kind of fey magic Bob: I used to be evil but I wasn’t THAT evil- Avala: She has found every way to become immortal and stolen it for herself. I recently got a new phone and I LOST ALL MY ELDRITCH LORE-  Patrick got stuck in the void. One of Cassiandris’s echo’s guides him back to the cottage.

Zara is going to the store cuz Alfie ran out of eggs. There’s a Walmart, the infinite ikea, and a dollar general.

Brick: THERE’S ALWAYS A DOLLAR GENERAL- We get side tracked by how many dollar generals are in each state and Rascal ALMOST GOT HIT BY A CAR. 1 dollar general in Montana but 20 in Rhode Island.

Zara gets back from the store and hops into the Nap Sack and she doesn’t see Sue Mai: She went into a door! IT WAS WEIRD- Zara: Already? Damn. How did the door look?

Mai: It was yellow with a black handle

Zara: Oh that’s not was I expected Cream: Has Zara been in the Magnus Archives world? Rascal: Yes. She was in there for a few months and s t r u g g l e d Zara: Don’t worry about it too much. Mai: Are you sure? Zara: Yes. She enters the dining hall. It is next to destroyed Zara: YOU DIDN’T TELL ME THE DINING ROOM WAS DESTROYED- Mai: I WAS PREOCCUPIED WITH MORTICIA-

There is a long rectangular shaped mark on the floor. Zara goes to leave the nap sack. The Nap Sack begins to violently shake and Zara hears the fabric tearing and throws the astral cloak on Mai and the kids disappear.

There is a tear in space itself. It’s Severa tearing her way through. Zara: Someone’s desperate to find me~ Severa: Not you. I’m not into furries. Zara: You want me? Severa: Not all of you. Just the parts that are timeless Zara: Then you better catch me!

Cue multiverse of madness esque chase sequence. There’s a sign to the gym, pool, theater and “Do not enter under any circumstances.”

Zara immediately goes into that door. (Zara’s parents last name is “Applesauce Meow Meow)

Zara sees what is essentially a funhouse mirror maze. It’s just the magnus universe and she sees a guy at a table recording statements. *retconned* It’s actually a room for Bob and Alfie in the future. For those who can warp the fabric of reality. When Bob ascends as the god of chaos after Discord’s death he will use that room to learn to control his chaos magic better. (probably becoming the God of Chaos and Order) *possibly retconned*

It’s actually a deep dark room. You can’t even see yourself when you enter. She has entered a room that is painted Vantablack. Meanwhile with everyone else: *snork mimimi*

Bob: The Napsack is violently shaking- Patrick, Truk and Bob follow and see the massive rip.

Patrick is trying to find Zara He finds the door and is like “That won’t stop me cuz I don’t know how to read!” Zara rolls stealth and got a 12 to hide. Severa: There you are. You’re going to have to give up your power. Zara: Why should I? Severa: Then I will kill everyone you love. Zara: Then you’ll have to find the source. Severa: I’m very aware of Time’s affiliation with you. Patrick: *calling out for Zara*

Zara: *ignoring Patrick* Oh do you~ *casts firebreath* Zara is trying to get out of Severa’s grasp. She succeeds. And she runs and hides. Patrick bumps into Zara and Zara hears a voice behind her, it’s Time “Keep Running” Patrick: Did Alfie put you in time out?

Rewind before they reunite

Cream tells Rascal to roll two constitution saves a disadvantage. She takes 200 necrotic damage. And she rots away. Dying. Patrick sees this.  This isn’t the first time she’s died and time reverses. And Time appears “You really need to stop getting in these kinds of things” And Zara shouts “FUCK THAT HURTS” everything freezes. Severa is frozen but Zara can feel her eyes following her. It’s like how the author that wrote Hannibal Lecter said that he can feel him looking at him through the pages. Alfie is not affected by the time stop. He’s just come back from spending time with his kids and keeps cooking and is just speed running prep work.

Zara: What do I do? Time: You’ll need a bit more than what you have right now. Zara: I just died now. Time: Technically no but yes. 

Zara: What do I do now? Time: How about I give you more of my power? They’re a bit more powerful than you can handle right now. And Zara can feel her soul becoming a bit more empowered. She changes. She feels stronger.

Zara: Is that it? Time: Well I do want to say this.

And she whispers something we cannot hear. And time begins to resume for her friends.

Her friends show up and she has a new cloak, a few rings and a necklace Zara: I never told you this but… I’m immortal. Truk: I KNEW IT. Bob and Alfie: We know Lanwel: *in the distance* so that’s why- Brick: Technically Time is Truk’s aunt

Brick the God of Gods was the oldest sibling. Azathoth is the middle child. Time is the Youngest.

Brick: I’m gonna roll something. Me: An intelligence check? Insert nat 1 Brick: *muffled laughter* Rascal: What did you get? Brick: i got a nat 1. Truk still doesn’t know that Time is his Aunt. Bob and Zara are unintentionally matching color scheme wise. Bob is wearing this.

Cassiandris: Why is she frozen Alfie: Don’t touch her, she has Rabies Truk: *teleports away*

Alfie taps on Cassiandris’s shoulder and says “I meant to give this to you a long time ago but stuff happened so here!” and he hands her a golden friendship bracelet. Cassiandris is now wearing a mark of his protection. A similar one appears in Vantablack on the echos.

Zara: How did she find us?

Cassiandris essentially uses magic to conceal our presence from scrying and detection. Severa is sent to a different plane. 

Zara plane shifts herself. “GUYS I FORGOT MY CHILDREN-”

Wow, All in huh??? SO MANY QUESTIONS.

1) Have I ever dressed up for halloween or for a costume party? NNNNNNNNOT REALLY. I wasn’t allowed to do Halloween after the age of like. Five? Because my parents got MORE religious than they’d already been and they decided halloween was evil. And then as an adult I didn’t have a lot of local friends or money so... not really most of the time. BUT! There was ONE YEAR when I was in my mid-20s, that my wife and I went to a Halloween party with some local friends. She was Death of the Endless, we dyed her hair black, I did her eye makeup, there was a cardboard-covered-in-tinfoil ankh necklace and everything. I that year dressed up as Delirium to go with her. I bought fishnets that I tore a couple holes in, had some clompy boots, bought a skirt and shirt at the thrift store, and dyed my hair... like Half of it was red, half of it was just random spots of bleached, blue, and green. (I actually went to a job interview the next day and frantically reassured the interviewer that I was bleaching my hair and dying it a more natural color later that week) It was very fun as a costume tho. OH tho last year for halloween I loaned my wife a purple dress I sewed for myself and we got her some white tights and a white scarf, and I dug out my purple henley and and jeans some bandaids for my face and fingers, and we went as Hawkeye for Halloween. She was Kate Bishop and I was Clint Barton. Do I like wearing jewelry? I do like wearing jewelry! I need to get new earrings bc the ones I had got lost, but I used to always wear like, small gauge horseshoe earrings with the balls that screw onto the ends? I just lost the balls on the ends. I also wear a necklace every day. And I used to have a wedding band but I don’t have one that fits currently and it drives me NUTS bc even years without it I feel  like I should have a ring on that finger.

Do I listen to podcasts? I listen to podcasts off and on! Mostly MBMBAM, The Magnus Archives, The Penumbra Podcast, and Faculty of Horror. We relisten to early WtNV to sleep sometimes, and I keep meaning to catch up on TAZ, but that’s not active yet.

What’s an interesting historical event I know something about? ...Gosh that’s hard. Like, I know some stuff about historical eras or cultures but EVENTS??? Hmmm... I. Fuck. I abruptly cannot think of ANY HISTORICAL EVENT AT ALL. I’m a fucking History Major this is embarrassing. Uh okay so... I can’t think of anything. I’m so sorry. XD

When do I feel most comfortable? When I’m curled up in bed and have Birdie pressed against my back with her arm around my waist. Bonus points for literally any of our other partners in bed as well, but that happens so rarely. :(

Do I have any piercings or tattoos? I DO! Piercings are easiest. I have my left lobe pierced 3 times (though all but the first might be closed) and my right 2 times (tho ditto), and the upper shell of my left ear once (but again, closed). TATTOOS gosh, ok I have, in chronological order: a) a sort of cross between a cross and a peace sign on the inside of my left ankle. I got it when I was 18 and still a Good Christian Girl, my church bff designed it, it stood for peace in Christ, and the only thing stopping me from trying to get a coverup is the fact that it’s REALLY heavy/thick black work, and the location which was really painful. b) the kanji 天使 (which translates to “angel”) on my right inner forearm, over self harm scars specifically. I got this when I was 19 and back living with my bigoted conservative family and suicidal and trying to remind myself that I was loved. I also picked it out of a book and was lucky that book had the right kanji tbh, but I picked it bc my parents wouldn’t be able to read it, and it meant “angel” which was Birdie’s pet name for me at the time, and she was living across the country from me. If I could go back, I would get a different angel-themed tattoo in the same place, but at least I have the proper kanji for it if I’m going to have an ill-advised Japanese tattoo. c) a little curled ivy tramp stamp I picked out of a book in a little tattoo shop on St. Mark’s Place in NYC at like 2am, do NOT ask, it was dumb. Thankfully easier to work into a larger piece if I ever have the money for a back piece. d) text that is now near-illegible (due to the delicate nature of the script and the time since I got it) on the back of my left shoulder. It says “the universe has been waiting for me” in Birdie’s handwriting. It’s a line from Donna Noble’s last episode of Doctor Who, and I had FEELINGS. e) text on the inside of my left wrist that says “alive or dead, the truth won’t rest.” specifically in courier new. It’s a quote from @seananmcguire​‘s book FEED, and Birdie has a matching tattoo on her wrist as well. f) A tattoo of Coyote and the Sun, with color, on the outer side of my right calf. It’s the only colored Tattoo I have. I plan to get a semi-matching tattoo on my left calf that is El-Ahrairah and the Black Rabbit of Inle doing sort of a yin-yang esque circle chasing each other. it’s a Trickster thing, tying animals commonly considered  to be Tricksters with stuff that is meaningful to me. Coyotes have always been important to me, I grew up in Arizona there were always coyotes about and I always loved them, and then Watership Down was a surprise true love of a book when I was a teen.

Are there any piercings/tattoos I’d like to get? Piercings not so much. Maybe an eyebrow one day idk. Tattoos tho, goddamn, I’ve got SO MANY PLANS. I want to get text tattoos - either part of a larger text-heavy design or separately - of “It’s chaos, be kind”, “You are not obligated to complete the work, neither are you free to abandon it”, and “Do good recklessly”. Other quotes I’m sure but those three specifically. Obviously the Watership Down/Rabbit the Trickster tattoo I mentioned. Also a design from one of the tattoos on one of the guards of the Pazyriyk ice maiden. Also ngl I kinda want to get the sigils for witcher signs on the backs of my fingers. Some people get “THUG LYFE” or “FUCK YOU”, I get “I WILL FUCK YOU UP (in symbolic form)” XD

What’s one thing I’m proud of? The fact that I’m alive. ...Seriously, I’m quite proud of that, I’ve had some shit years in my life, and I’ve nearly not made it more than once. I’m proud as HELL that I’m here. I’m proud that I’m in college. I’m proud that I’m writing again.

I have book recs! The outlander series by Diana gabaladon (there is attempted sequel assault, lots of sex, and an intense gay rape scene is the first book please be careful) it's a historical gifting adventure with a well written cast and romance The magnus cases series (Norse gods) bu Rick Riordan, it's similar to percy Jackson Doll bones by Holly black, it's an adventure lead by a ghost to settle her bones it's Y/A (1/?) I love books and have many suggestions

City of bones by cassandra Claire, the first in the shadow hunters series, it follows a girl raised in the mortal world as she discovers her powers and past. Before I fall by Lauren Oliver, a ground hog esque story following a girl who relives the same day over and over That's all my brain is letting me think of for now if you want more recommendations books or fics lemme know I hoard them (1/2)

outlander!!! that’s a show too, right?  magnus chase, yes, i’ve been meaning to read holly black!! i’ve read city of bones but i’m honestly probably due for a reintroduction, i fell off in the middle of the whole “clockwork” series she was putting out. and i’ve never heard of that last one, i’ll add it to my list, thank you!!

There’s a rich person in their house, uncanny on their middle class suburb. And then normal human Alex (or what he thought) is brought to Kentucky all the way from Vegas to attend a magical academy. Turns out, he’s some kind of candidate to become this Otherworld leader to continue the peace between different breeds of Creatures. Clueless and ignorant, he gathers people to become his support, to learn from, and to be his protectors.

If you’re a fan of something like Harry Potter x Percy Jackson x Magnus Chase x Vampire Academy with lots of daddy issues, magic-academy tropes, and lots of cursing, you’ll love this book. If you’re looking for fresh air, then you might want to drop the book. There’s a concept that’s different but if you dislike the tropes I mentioned (which is appears majority of the book), I think it wouldn’t work for you. However, since it’s just the first book of a series, you can also stick around and see what becomes of Alex and the One True Ayer(s).

Alex is 14, yet his voice is someone 18 or 19. The people around him are the same age or at least a year or two older but they sound nothing like 14-16. And too much cursing though not really a problem as most kids nowadays curse a dozen times a day, but for a YA, yeah, definitely too much.

Let me talk about Alex. He has daddy issues, he hates his dad and never fails to throw an insult whenever his dad is the subject, whether it be spoken or thought. And honestly, it gets annoying. He’s whining, a lot. Even in the first few pages. It almost made me drop the book but I gave him a second chance. But yeah, too much whining for my taste. I also actually never realized Alex was 14 until 10 chapters in. His voice sounds so much older, though there are times a 14 year old replaces him, but I only saw that twice or thrice.

Alex is also hailed as an heir, and it could be because we're still in Book 1 but he does not show any qualities of a leader. He’s dependent on his friends, and does not show interest to learn about the world he’s in (or so what we see in this book). Though can’t blame him, he was suddenly pulled out from his normal human life.

Now let me talk about the world. In this world, there are Creatures, there are many different breeds. Dragons, succubus, vampires, you name it. I find it interesting, especially that the book showcases other creatures other myths such as from Japan, and Hawaii. There is also the leader called Scion, and his ciorcal. I didn't really understand how the government in this world works, it was not explained fully well and I’m confused. The concept of the world’s glamour and immortality was also not further explained. And I wish the book did, especially that this is the first book of the series, the foundation. But, I can say that technique left me hanging and wanting more. Though it might not work with other readers, especially since there is more or less a year in between the release of the next book and the first book.

The writing is good, not too many flowery words but description is adequate and not too overwhelming. It could be because I’m reading an ARC but some parts lack details. An example of what I mean is this: Alex and some of his friends step outside from somewhere. Someone calls Alex. He turns and the scene goes on but his friends seem to be forgotten. Like, what did they do? Did they stop too? Did they continue and leave Alex or stood by? There are also times I do not understand where the characters are because it skips a few minor but important details. One example is Alex gets ready to leave his room, and then the next paragraph he’s out on the courtyard or something. Did he jump or something?

We also have Alex’s friends. Each one has their own personality, and own background and cultures and it would be fun to delve in deeper. I want to know their motives on joining Alex’s ciorcal and the benefit they could gain. The relationships were built strong and they all have chemistry. Especially Elvy and Win, which are the two I’m looking forward. I can already see the fanarts oh god.

To be honest, this book has the cliche tropes, academy, daddy issues, parents leaving kids or parents being dead, journey on finding your magical abilities, usual high school drama, betrayals, and fight to the throne esque. The usual YA tropes. And I’m not saying it’s bad to use them but others might see it as ‘done over and over again’ and might be a reason to put down the book, but there’s something to the writing, the characters and their personality, the world, and in general, the delivery, that you’ll keep reading and turning next. There are many things left unanswered, things left to be explained, which I hope will be answered in the next book. For the meantime, I will give this book 3.5 stars.
