i just really want to see mako & bolin dragging korra around her first night market after a game. every tacky vendor of metal-wire walls and flappy colorful canvas is an entire new world to her, draped in cheaply-made clothes chasing the latest fashions and carefully-wrought jewelry made by the hands of their sellers, trinkets and magnets adorning spinning racks. there are so many voices and smells overlapping, not a unified din like the arena tends to become, and bolin is bargaining the price of a hat for her that she didn't ask for and mako is shoving paper bags of greasy foods into her hands. bolin drops the hat on her head and when she steps off into a dark space between buildings where motorcycles are haphazardly parked, trying to find air again, he returns wielding sticks of tanghulu and sweet potato balls. mako slips after them and asks if she wants a drink, and she says sure, anything you think is good; you're the expert here, and he flashes her a rare smile before weaving back into the crowd with the ease of someone used to navigating faceless armies. bolin stole her bag of fishcakes on sticks and is eating them noisily to remind her of the company she has, and she tries the sweet potato balls fried just for her, soft and chewy and sugar on her tongue. korra doesn't know these snacks — she's a child of the south, nurtured by ice and storming whiteout, bannock in fish stews of carefully stored spices, wooden sweetness on her tongue in akutaq of cloudberry — but she thinks she'd like to learn to know them.
it's an odd drink that mako brings back for her by the haphazardly-parked motorcycles, drowned in jelly more than liquid, and korra savors every cool swallow sliding down her throat and the sweetness filling her heart. the brothers are pouring copious amounts of hot sauce packets into a plastic tray of noodle and offer her the splintered chopsticks, and she takes them in calloused hands and it burns the spaces between her teeth like fire against the celestial lights. what sort of insane would you need to be to enjoy this? she demands indignantly and mako just shrugs and shovels a large portion into his mouth. bolin scowls and adds more hot sauce, taking his own dig at the increasingly reddening dish, and it goes on back and forth like that until korra can't hold back her laugh. it fills the city horizon, the night market, and korra thinks beneath the glowing red signs screaming their wares that this is where people must come alive.
and she would like to feel so suddenly alone, to let her isolation swallow her up whole as a child to jelly drinks; but she doesn't, not in the company of mako and bolin sharing with her the city they lost and gained everything from — from the city that can now be hers.

my list of crochet ideas for the craft market
- bandanas -adult and child sizes, borders and fringe variety, beaded
- bags -market/produce bags, simple shape purses
- keychains - lil amigurumis + lil shapes + pompoms/tassel type situations perhaps (mostly bc i want to have stuff for like . a variety of budgets.
-fridge magnets - tiny amigurumis + lil shapes + BUTTERFLIES
-car mirror danglies
- stuffies of various sizessss
how do i want to display?
ultimately i think a pegboard would be the best for keychains right......
i always imagine having the bandanas hanging somehow, let me sketch what i imagine
Tumblr media
like a desktop wire clothes hanger rack with mini hangers displaying a few bandanas to show off the different styles, then have the rest folded and sorted by size into stacks maybe to the side? + i always envision having a lil mirror standing to the side + a claw clip for try-ons . bc you need a claw clip to keep your baby hairs out of the knot while you tie on a bandana lol.
i feel like. for the magnets i keep imagining displaying them as like. a cookie sheet stood up in a decorative plate stand. and then all the magnets on the cookie sheet. i could use a chalk pen or something to divide them into price groups?
also the next market isnt until literaly july im just getting myself very excited. i want this to be a thing i can do that works.
well do you like. what do you think. would you spend $15 CAD for an adult sized crocheted bandana? $1or2 for a pompom or tassel keychain ?

Econ anon here again just wanted to reply to some of the comments https://at.tumblr.com/the-bjd-community-confess/not-quite/x59g10p6gbrq
Thank you for your input and healthy discussion, warms my nerdy lil heart!! 🥹
Regarding e-commerce sites, I’m speaking purely in terms of maximizing efficiency for buying and selling on the second hand market. Far easier to sort through items on eBay than the #bjdsales IG hashtag for example. Also that’s why so many (Western people at least) end up buying recasts entering the hobby as there aren’t very many luxury goods today that you can’t buy legit off of e-commerce sites. You aren’t wrong as to the “why” knowledgable legit BJD buyers don’t list/search those sites but the result is still an overall hindrance to legitimate secondhand market transactions.
Regarding unknown buyers/sellers, this originally started back in the early 2000s when there were little to no recasts. The concern was overwhelmingly getting scammed and having someone run off with your money. Even now it’s rarely an issue an informed buyer is being sold a recast or being tricked into buying one. Most transaction issues with unknowns revolve around sale scams for legit dolls and items. I’d say recasts are part of the concern now, but that can usually be assuaged with a CoA verification . But overall even without recasts not selling/buying to/from unknowns would still be standard.
Great comments regarding IP issues and price. Although I will say what you mean by “inflexible” actually means more flexible or more elastic in economic terms.  Lol it is a bit confusing but basically what’s considered “flexible” isn’t based on whether the price of an item ever increases or decreases or the frequency it does, its based on people’s willingness to buy when it does change. We are essentially saying the same thing though!  Companies that raise their prices will be generally unsuccessful.
Taking this a step further this actually made me really consider if the BJD market is a competitive market as a whole. I would say the smaller companies and independent artists are price takers, meaning the above theory would apply to them as they cannot set a price in the market on their own. The market determines the price. Ex, heads are usually anywhere from $85-160 (depending on skin tone, size, etc). An artist charging $300+ for their head without any other extras, faceup, etc. would be looked at like they were insane lol.
HOWEVER, companies like V0lks and Soom are more likely Monopolies. They can set that higher price themselves regardless of the market and consumers are willing to pay it because of their brand and products (superior goods).
Soom especially quality is rather mid in comparison to the prices they charge for a basic nude doll. Many people complain about QA issues of head cap magnets being weak, obvious seam lines, the resin skin tones are not consistent between batches, need to be wired/sueded to pose, jointed hands are DYI kits, etc. Yet they are still widely popular despite all these quality issues.  But it’s also a big trait of Monopolies in economics that they do not have to prioritize quality above all else as people will want them regardless. V0lks on the other hand has higher quality standards but they have their own unique way of selling and offering dolls (lotteries, one-offs, not being able to buy blank dolls, full sets coming with glued in eyes, etc) that people do complain about often yet there are still thriving in business.
Not to mention both V0lks and Soom come out with limiteds and full sets that can be 3x-5x times the price of an average BJD doll already costing hundreds. They don’t even have to offer heads because they know people will want the sculpt enough to buy the full doll.
Going back to IP I don’t know much about IP law but I am not surprised at the costs to go through legal proceeds being ridiculously high, which you are right is likely the reason they don’t enforce. However, I don’t think it’s because the dolls are underpriced though. It’s likely even if they were able to charge say $300 a head, they still wouldn’t be able to generate enough to cover legal costs. Lawyers can be $300 & up an hour in addition to retainer fees. Only V0lks I would guess would have the resources to sue and even with them its likely the opportunity costs aren’t worth it to them.
At that level it’s never really about the principle of fighting for your IP and all about the money. Now if a multi-billion dollar company like Matt3l started stealing V0lks IP, you bet it would be worth then to sue. Not to mention they could likely get attorneys who would work for a percentage of the amount won, rather than charge hourly saving on the up front costs of legal expenses. But that usually just happens in extremely high profile situations when lots of money are involved. That’s why you rarely hear of anyone suing anyone else over IP if they themselves or the person they are suing aren’t a big corporation with lots of money, the costs wouldn’t be worth the reward otherwise.
Regarding Lou, I don’t think the argument about Lou its a bizarre at all. What you are suggesting would be a duopoly or a cartel (no not the drug kind lol!). Cartels in Econ are companies who each agree to make a certain amount of an item so they can split market profits on that item rather than compete (usually illegal to form in most industries due to anti-trust laws etc). Although I do think someone mentioned it in the comments too, the downside of cartels is one side (Lou in this case) is incentivized to cheat. Companies would be wary giving Lou molds as he could essentially then do what he wants, sell for lower prices, produce more than agreed upon, not give them their share of profits, etc, etc.  There is no promise he wouldn’t sell more than he is supposed to or even if they did give him an exclusive sculpt he could use it to copy and make his own (like he has before).
Regarding overhead costs of legit vs recast. This isn’t true at all that it would be more expensive for Lou to go legit or that he is saving lots of money by stealing at this stage. Although there are heavy fixed costs in the short run of starting a business, Lou is now a successful recaster. He has the materials and resources to sculpt his own if he wanted to. The start up costs of getting a warehouse, resin, casting materials, etc, for his recast business far out way the costs of spending a bit more time refining a doll with sculpting, sanding, etc. Time is the main cost in sculpting original creations rather than money.
For proof of this look no further than some of the western artists presales on IG. They will get people excited with their sculpting process and get lots of preorders. But when it actually comes to paying a caster and getting other supplies to produce the doll that’s when they flop. They either take way longer to deliver or out right become a scammer and don’t deliver dolls because the overhead costs of producing the doll were way higher than sculpting one, even when they weren’t the ones doing the casting themselves (short run vs long run marginal costs).
However, this is a pipe dream Lou going legit honestly. It’s far more lucrative and brings more economic profit for him to remain a recaster having a monopoly on it being the main recaster. If he were to go legit, another recaster seeing opportunity would take his spot. Thats why even if Lou’s recast factory blew up tomorrow and he left the businesses, it would only be a matter of time before another recaster took his spot.

I had to run by a Radio Shack on a few occasions for electronics components right up til their eventual closure.  They had the “electronics components” as a category, but they were largely supplying them from a small stack of cabinets, and not even all of that was populated, alongside maybe two or three types of ‘general starter electronics kit’.  Forget “building a radio”: the local place didn’t even have a full E6 resistors or magnet wire.  And their staff would be better trained to sell RC cars or cell phones (the latter of which was nearly half the store by 2012) than to answer even simple electronics questions.
((Note the lack of transformers even listed on those cabinets; at best they’d have a couple variable-voltage wall warts.))
Their online catalog was better in variety -- I got a lot of copper-plated boards during their going-out-of-business sale -- but it was nowhere near competitive with online sellers even before dropshipping ate the world.  In many cases you’d be looking at three- to five-fold markup over McMaster-Carr or DigiKey prices, even including shipping.
Which... kinda points to the issue with foone’s alternate proposal. A RadioShack trying to sell to hobbyist enthusiasts would have still had to compete with the internet, and hobbyists ended up being pretty fickle about large purchases, too, no matter how much brand loyalty they might have had at a day-to-day basis.
With good reason: those electronics components cabinets often had a 10-fold markup over buying the same from local used electronics shops or 20-fold from online vendors, but if you needed a D-25 or a stack of LEDs in a hurry you’d be willing to pay a couple bucks for the convenience.  And those really weren’t enough to keep the lights on or doors open at the scale -- even small family used electronics shops have to operate at a drastically different format.  Meanwhile, if you wanted to make even a moderately-complicated electronics circuit, you’d be looking at tens if not hundred of dollars in price differences between RadioShack’s local options and online sellers.
((And, separately, the modern education system had absolutely slaughtered any interest in low-level electronics pre-Arduino, and not just as primary or secondary school levels.  I’ve talked with post-grad EEs who hadn’t touched a component smaller than a NAND gate.  The internet has done amazing things for connectivity and community among hardware enthuisiasts, but we’re still a dying breed.))
But RadioShack’s pre-00s business model sold the small stuff like transformers and capacitors so that it could also sell the big stuff: sound systems, full radio kits, so on.  Even back in the 1980s, they were far more .  The point of selling mechanical keyboards, had they made it to today, wouldn’t be to sell a handful of 50-cent cherry switches for $3 each, but that they could sell a 50-buck mechanical keyboard kit for $200.  I think that would have been a more successful approach in retrospect... but it’d also be the sort of thing that would have been ‘successful’ on the scale of a few hundred stores at most, rather than the thousands that RadioShack was operating (and often locked into).
((They did sell Arduino and RaspberryPi-style kits, mostly MAKE magazine or Seeed-variant stuff, just around 2012-2013. But they were very much marketed at Young Children Educational Gifts rather than viable projects.))
Microcenter and some hardware stores have taken that approach, and they do exist -- though it’s still not their core focus so much as a way to drive other sales -- but they’re the sort of business that can only support a location or two per city, rather than the convenient strip-mall front that RadioShack aimed for.
Does anyone remember what happened to Radio Shack?
They started out selling niche electronics supplies. Capacitors and transformers and shit. This was never the most popular thing, but they had an audience, one that they had a real lock on. No one else was doing that, so all the electronics geeks had to go to them, back in the days before online ordering. They branched out into other electronics too, but kept doing the electronic components.
Eventually they realize that they are making more money selling cell phones and remote control cars than they were with those electronic components. After all, everyone needs a cellphone and some electronic toys, but how many people need a multimeter and some resistors?
So they pivoted, and started only selling that stuff. All cellphones, all remote control cars, stop wasting store space on this niche shit.
And then Walmart and Target and Circuit City and Best Buy ate their lunch. Those companies were already running big stores that sold cellphones and remote control cars, and they had more leverage to get lower prices and selling more stuff meant they had more reasons to go in there, and they couldn't compete. Without the niche electronics stuff that had been their core brand, there was no reason to go to their stores. Everything they sold, you could get elsewhere, and almost always for cheaper, and probably you could buy 5 other things you needed while you were there, stuff Radio Shack didn't sell.
And Radio Shack is gone now. They had a small but loyal customer base that they were never going to lose, but they decided to switch to a bigger but more fickle customer base, one that would go somewhere else for convenience or a bargain. Rather than stick with what they were great at (and only they could do), they switched to something they were only okay at... putting them in a bigger pond with a lot of bigger fish who promptly out-competed them.
If Radio Shack had stayed with their core audience, who knows what would have happened? Maybe they wouldn't have made a billion dollars, but maybe they would still be around, still serving that community, still getting by. They may have had a small audience, but they had basically no competition for that audience. But yeah, we only know for sure what would happen if they decided to attempt to go more mainstream: They fail and die. We know for sure because that's what they did.
I don't know why I keep thinking about the story of what happened to Radio Shack. It just keeps feeling relevant for some reason.

Understanding The Value Of Scrap Metals In Today's Market
In an era increasingly focused on sustainability and resource conservation, the significance of scrap metals has grown tremendously. Far from mere waste, scrap metals are emerging as valuable commodities in today’s market.
Particularly in cities like Melbourne, the demand for Best Scrap Metals Melbourne has surged, driven by both economic factors and environmental concerns. This blog will explore the value of scrap metals, their types, and their critical role in our economy and environment.
The Growing Demand for Scrap Metals
The escalating demand for scrap metals is largely a response to the evolving dynamics of various industries, including construction, automotive, and electronics. The need for metal products rises as the population grows and infrastructure expands.
Recycling scrap metals serves dual purposes: it conserves natural resources and minimises energy consumption compared to extracting new metals from ores.
This energy efficiency not only reduces costs for businesses but also aligns with global sustainability goals. As industries strive to lower their carbon footprints, the role of scrap metals in the supply chain becomes increasingly crucial.
Types of Scrap Metals and Their Value
When discussing scrap metals, it is essential to understand the two primary categories: ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Ferrous Metals: Essential but Economically Lower
Ferrous metals contain iron, making them magnetic and easy to identify. Common examples include:
Steel: Widely used in construction and automotive applications, steel is one of the most recycled materials globally.
Cast Iron: Cast iron is a valuable addition to the scrap metal market, often found in plumbing and cookware.
While ferrous metals generally have a lower market value than non-ferrous metals, their abundance ensures they remain a significant component of the recycling industry.
Non-Ferrous Metals: High Demand and Value
Non-ferrous metals do not contain iron, making them more resistant to corrosion and typically more valuable. Key examples include:
Aluminium: Commonly found in cans and packaging, aluminium is lightweight and highly recyclable.
Copper: Valued for its excellent conductivity, copper is primarily used in electrical wiring and plumbing, making it one of the most sought-after scrap metals.
Brass: An alloy of copper and zinc, brass is commonly found in plumbing fixtures and musical instruments. It commands a high price in the scrap market.
The demand for non-ferrous metals fluctuates with global market trends, yet their intrinsic value remains consistently high, making them an attractive option for recycling.
Selling Scrap Metals: Important Considerations
Several factors should be considered for individuals and businesses looking to capitalise on their scrap metals. First, sorting and cleaning metals to maximise their market value is crucial. Most scrap yards offer better prices for clean, sorted materials.
Second, it is essential to stay informed about current market rates for various metals. Prices can change frequently, and knowing about the market will ensure the best return on your scrap.
Lastly, seeking reputable scrap yards in the Melbourne area is advisable. When looking for scrap metals Melbourne services, opt for facilities known for fair pricing and excellent customer service. This ensures that your recycling efforts translate into financial benefits.
The Environmental Impact of Recycling Scrap Metals
One of the most compelling arguments for recycling scrap metals is its positive environmental impact. By recycling metals, we can significantly reduce the need for mining, which often leads to habitat destruction and pollution.
Moreover, recycling metals can conserve up to 95% of the energy required to produce new metals from raw materials.
Engaging in scrap metal recycling not only contributes to a more sustainable economy but also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
By prioritising scrap metal recycling in Melbourne, individuals and businesses alike can play a vital role in promoting a healthier planet.
Conclusion: Embracing the Value of Scrap Metals
The value of scrap metals Melbourne services extends beyond financial gain; it embodies a commitment to sustainability and responsible resource management.
As the world increasingly acknowledges the importance of recycling, the potential of scrap metals as a valuable resource will only grow.
In conclusion, whether you are a business looking to optimise your resources or an individual considering the environmental impact of your waste, recognising the value of scrap metals is essential.
By actively participating in recycling efforts, we can transform what might be seen as waste into valuable resources, benefiting both the economy and the environment.

I have a theory that this can be blamed on the death of the headphone jack. See, the headphone jack was a standardized piece of analog hardware, extremely usable, extremely cheap, you could buy a budget pack of earbuds for like ten bucks or less even up until just a couple years ago.  They worked on anything, and if they ever broke, you could just get another budget pair of earbuds for another like ten bucks.  It was quite easy to justify spending ten bucks to respect the right other people had to silence, or to respect your own desire for privacy. Bluetooth arrived, and started getting integrated into various bits of hardware.  In and of itself, this is a good thing.  Bluetooth let you link up your various devices in novel and interesting ways, and that allowed you a wider array of possible apps and interactions, a wider suite of things you could Do, so various smart phone manufacturers started integrating Bluetooth tech into their phones. And then a greedy dickhead realized “Hey wait a second.  If we remove the headphone jack from our phones, we save slightly on machining costs from having to drill the hole in the case, AND we can incentivize people to use Bluetooth earbuds!  Instead of having a cheap piece of standard easily-available tech that’s just wire and a couple magnets and thus costs like ten bucks, we can have an expensive fancy piece of tech that costs over fifty bucks, where it comes in two pieces and if you lose either half the whole thing becomes unusable and you have to buy it again!” And now suddenly the cost for your own privacy or to respect other people quintupled if you had one of those phones, and that was a lot harder of a sell.  So the stingiest among us stopped paying that price.  More and more greedy dickheads jumped on the no-headphone-jack bandwagon, making this problem evermore widespread, meaning more stingy people stopped paying that price, meaning it became more and more normalized to not use headphones or earbuds at all, meaning that less stingy people had less of a push to purchase the eardbuds in the first place, making it even more normalized, and now the earbud market is in a death spiral. All because some jackass removed the headphone jack to make a quick buck.
We failed as a society when everyone stopped wearing headphones.

HMD's New Modular Smartphone Finally Becomes Available
Tumblr media
If you've been keeping an eye on tech, then you're probably aware that HMD (previously known as HMD Global) has re-adjusted its brand and smartphone business strategy to slowly move away from the legacy Nokia brand. For those not in the know, HMD entered into a deal with Nokia many years ago that would let the former license Nokia-branded Android phones, although with the deal now coming to an end, HMD has wasted no time in trying to establish its own name in the industry. CHECK OUT: Lumia Reinvented? The HMD Skyline is Now Official In fact, HMD launched its Pulse-series smartphones a while back, which consists of three models without the Nokia branding on them. This was followed by the Nokia Skyline, which ironically enough lacks the Nokia logo despite looking like a Lumia device. That aside though, HMD's push to stand out in the market has led to a new entry in its lineup in the form of the HMD Fusion, which incorporates a modular design. The phone is also now available for purchase for buyers in Europe and in the United Kingdom, starting at a rather wallet-friendly price of £229. This modular hardware setup allows users to clip on different accessories onto the phone, which consists of gear from both HMD and other third-party brands. Dubbed "Fusion Outfits," these accessories consist of everything from interchangeable cases and back covers, which come with different features such as magnetic wireless charging, rugged cases, and more. There's even an option for a controller setup for gaming. It's worth noting that the concept of modular smartphones isn't anything new - companies like Motorola and LG have previously tried this (albeit with middling success), and there was even the ill-fated Project Ara smartphone which has all but disappeared from public memory. More recently though, newcomers like Nothing's CMF sub-brand have revisited modular smartphone design with the CMF Phone 1, which likewise integrates a modular hardware setup. CHECK OUT: Nothing’s CMF Brand Launches its First-ever Phone In terms of specs, the HMD Fusion comes with a list of specs that's commonly found on a lot of budget smartphones - powered by a Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chip, the phone also comes with a 6.56-inch IPS display, which also features a 90Hz refresh rate and HD+ resolution. There's also a 5,000 mAh battery with 33W wired charging; as for imaging, there's a 108MP main camera on the rear panel, while a 50MP front camera handles selfies and video calls. In terms of design it forgoes the Lumia-centric aesthetic of the HMD Skyline, instead opting for a more "standard" design, save for the rear panel which doesn't hide its modular origins. With all that being said, folks interested in getting the HMD Fusion can now order the phone via the company's official website and via participating retailers. Read the full article

Use a Magnet to Test Metals
A simple magnet test can help you quickly identify ferrous (magnetic) and non-ferrous (non-magnetic) metals. Non-ferrous metals like copper, aluminium, and brass are generally more valuable than ferrous metals. This quick test can help you sort and prioritize your scrap.
Weigh Your Scrap Accurately
Ensure you have a reliable scale to accurately weigh your scrap metals. Knowing the exact weight of your metals helps you negotiate better prices and ensures you’re getting paid for the full amount you bring in.
Choose the Right Buyer
When it comes to selling scrap metals, finding the right buyer is crucial for maximizing your profits. Not all buyers are created equal, and selecting the best one can make a significant difference in the amount of money you receive. We recommend that you do some scouting to find which buyers offer better deals so as not to make the wrong choice.
Conclusion
Maximizing the value of your scrap metals involves a combination of organization, cleanliness, market awareness, and building good relationships with scrap yards. By sorting and cleaning your metals, stripping insulated wires, and staying informed about market prices, you can significantly increase your profits. Remember, the more effort you put into preparing your scrap, the better the return you’ll get. Use these tricks to make the most of your scrap metal recycling in Windsor and watch your earnings grow.
