Nile Freeman - Part 1

For the next part of this series we shall be reviewing the new one!! Miss Nile Freeman. As she is the co-lead of the movie I cannot fit all my analysis into a single part. So this will be part 1!!

First Impression:

Nile is introduced right after Andy declares she's 'done' fighting for humanity. Clearly Nile is either going to support or critque her nihilism.

Unlike the other marines, who are interrogating the adults, Nile is giving sweets to children. This is clealy meant to differentiate her from the extras and also set the audience up to like her. But they also include subtle flaws in her character; like Booker's cynicism, Nicky's naivity and Joe's temper. Nile is clearly very loyal to authority as she leaves the children without a second thought when summoned.

There's a brief shot of the children looking nervous as she leaves so this is meant to be a negative thing. Unlike the immortals, Nile is focused on the bigger picture insted of the little bouts of kindness one can bestow on another.

Not that this is wrong and that Nile doesn't care about people. She is still kind to people.

Her Death:

The moment in which she kills the man, she is clearly shocked by this, once again referencing Gina Prince-Blythwood's desire not to glamorise the violence on screen.

Even without explicitly telling us, you can infer that she hasn't killed anyone before. Having this be her first kill also works well to set up her death. If someone is reeling from their first kill, it makes sense that they do not check their victim properly. She does pat him down, but it is rushed as her main focus is trying to save his life. If she was a more experienced marine she would've checked the man more clearly.

I love the sound design in this scene. Not only does the camera get more and more blury as she dies, but the sound begins to become muffled until you can no longer hear anything.

I also like the way that the light becomes almost like a sun, similar to the sun that is seen in Quynh's flashbacks.

The Dreams:

All in all, the immortals' dreams are mostly a focus on what is happening in the moment. If you slow it down you can see the different things each of the immortals see. The images also appear in order of who sees what.

Nile's dream, however, gives her a brief look at who each of the immortals are.

Joe and Nicky are embraced, as they are connected. Booker is drinking. Andy is on the screen the most, most likely showing the connection between Nile and Andy.

I love the small detail of the bubbles at the end, showing Quynh even when you don't know anything about her.

Leaving the Marines:

It makes complete sense that the christian would hold her cross necklace after coming back from the dead. Another moment where the acting implies something about the character before it's explicitly told to the audience.

Giving Nile 2 main friends serves to show the two reaction to someone being immortal. Dizzy is fearful and most likely reported Nile to the main headquaters whilst Jay is in awe of Nile. It's serves as a paralell to the witch trial flashback were the young girl doesn't appear to be scared but her mother pushes her behind her.

Nile and Andy share similar habits, like doing something physical to deal with intense emotion. But this works as a double-edged sword. You can see in the distance of this shot that the two marines are staring at her. She had her throat slit and now can workout without issue the next day which is highly suspicious. She is trying to retain some normalcy as she cannot accept things have drastically changed.

This can also be seen in the tent scene. Instead of grabbing her bag, she just grabs her phone (with photos of her family on). Subtly, Nile is trying to convince herself that she won't be gone for long and will return to her normal life soon.

In this interview, Gina Prince-Blythewood states hired Kiki Layne almost immedietly because she know that she could portray both the stregnth and "that dope vulnerability" Gina wanted from the immortals. These two scene display that in full:

Within the span of five minutes, Nile has gone from a vunerable scared woman trying to calm herself to a highly trained marine who is capable of protecting herself. The writers also give her the choice to go with Andy.

The Plane:

This interaction between Andy and Nile helps to build their relationship. Nile isn't afraid of Andy and feels free enough to complain. Andy, also, isn't offended by the snark and instead it probally helps convince her that Nile "has potential".

There are several shots of Nile looking around the plane, taking note of everything in the area. The camera is showing you Nile's plan before she acts on it. It also sets her up as an observant/curious character which we'll see later on. Secondly, she asks many questions throughout the film showing she isn't just 'going along' with what is happening and is critical of what Andy is saying.

The build-up to the fight further serves to display the duality of Nile's personality.

Nile's plan for disarming Andy as well as her threatening the pilot shows her to be a trained marine but when it becomes real (when Andy 'shoots' the pilot) she panics showing her lack of experience.

Whilst the line is primarily foreshadowing, it also sets up that Nile doesn't believe she is actually immortal. Andy, recognising this, uses it to manipulate Nile into letting her go. This follows Nile's story of accepting her immortality.

As Kiki Layne states, "Oh I [Nile] was getting my ass whooped" but she does get to show her own skills when she hits Andy twice. She is given the respect of being able to fight Andy insted of just being thrown around. With time she could become as skilled as Andy.

The fight ends with Andy breaking Nile's arm and leg. This is meant to show that Andy is done testing Nile and wants the end the fight. I believe she broke Nile's arm in this manner to show Nile that this immortality is real.

While being shot in the head is a compelling argument, Nile counter-argument makes just as much sense:

You must... must have hypnotized me, or... or, uh, drugged me or something. And that was a blank that you shot me with.

Being shot in the head is famously painless, you die instantly and the immortals wake only after they're healed. But (from experience) breaking your arm is very painful, you can feel it break and Nile can watch it heal in real time. It makes total sense as to why Nile believes Andy after this.

I love the transition Nile goes through as she recons with her immortality. Her first response is rather child-like before developing into a logical response. Whilst the movie gives Nile a lot of strength, it also allows her to be vunerable in a logical manner which makes the audience relate to her. It also serves to represent the opposite of what Andy (and also Booker) have. Andy doesn't remember her family and Booker's family hated him by the end of their lives. This discussion is furthered in the rest of the movie.

Even though she has accepted Andy is telling the truth, she still shows doubt when she feels that Andy is lying to her.

The Dinner Scene:

Once again, Nile is shown being observant. She doesn't seem to be impulsive as she examines all of the immortals before asking questions.

Nile is mostly an audience-surrogate in this scene, allowing for the immortals to naturally exposite about themselves. Although, she still shows subtle moments of character. She figures out quickly that Andy is in charge and so values her opinion the most, harking back to her loyalty to authority (whether that's to her Sergent or God in a sense).

Quynh:

I love the subtle moment where Nile is reluctent to tell the immortals about her dream until she is pressed by Nicky. It also makes sense that it doesn't take her a lot to tell them what she saw. She is new to this world whilst they are many years older than you so it makes sense she'd assume they would know what is going on and she is right.

I love the way that Kiki portrays this short monologue. She goes from scared and quiet to loud and emotional then back to quiet as she goes through the emotions in the dream.

Again, in the Quynh flashbacks, Nile allows the audience to find out about her. But it serves to deepen her character as she doesn't ask questions when someone is in pain.

But even when she doesn't speak, Kiki's face acting tells you how Nile is feeling about this. Not only is she not 'really' immortal but there are even worse fates then death. Having the main characters of the show be immortal runs the risk of removing all the stakes/tension. To avoid this, Rucka makes the immortality temporary so the deaths each of the immortals experience still runs the risk of them dying permenantly. In the comics, Qunyh (Noriko) is lost to sea because of a shipwreck. However, they didn't have the budget to film a shipwreck so instead turned it into an iron coffin. Gina Prince-Blythewood uses this change to further the threat of Merrick as it makes the audience consider what fates could be worse when you cannot die. This story also results in Nile storming off which gets Andy and Nile out of the way for an ambush.

since the news of the reshoots dropped i’ve seen a lot of people talking about their nightmare scenarios for worst possible tog2 plot lines and a lot of people have mentioned being afraid that they’ll explain why they have immortality and it’ll be stupid, so im curious:

in my headcanon (sort of building on a post i wrote months and months ago), niles and cc welcomed twin girls after moving back to new york from california. west coast life didn't agree with them. i go back and forth on what to name them, but currently we're (me, niles, and cc) on fiona and flora. fifi and flo to niles, which makes cc roll her eyes. marriage and parenthood hasn't relaxed her one iota; any signs of softening is actually her surrendering for her sanity's sake. "be the river, cc, be the fucking river," she says to herself at least a dozen times a day.

when they are eight, they discover harry potter and become obsessed. it's the 00s so it makes sense as HP was EVERYWHERE. cc feels her sanity slipping as she can't escape it. even when she goes to work, she finds a golden snitch in her briefcase and a bertie botts every flavour bean in her bra. somehow. she suffers so (though years later, she actually has a hand in bringing "the cursed child" to the stage. apparently, she was always a bellamort shipper, identifying heavily with bellatrix).

niles reads the books to them at bedtime, they attend the midnight premieres of the movies, and they wait in long lines for the midnight release of the books. fiona and flora INSIST their parents dress up with them for one of the midnight releases. fiona is luna lovegood and flora is the whomping willow, delightfully hitting anyone who comes near her.

niles is madame sprout. "what? she has her own greenhouse!" he responds to anyone who wonders why he isn't someone more...popular. when people ask cc who she is, niles rushes to answer, "she's nagini, can't you tell? she didn't need a costume." to which cc glares at him and sticks out her tongue. "there's that method acting prowess!" he replies.

one evening on the drive home from school (their hippie, crunchy granola, vegan, booze-free waldorf school, of course), the twins decide to do a test to see what their hogwarts house is. fiona is looking for validation that she is, in fact, a ravenclaw. flora is convinced she's a gryffindor. and no one can tell them any differently. but still, just to be on the safe side, they take a test that's in the latest issue of one of their favourite magazines that will reveal their hogwarts houses, allaying their fears once and for all.

this is a very important time of discovery for them; after all, this is an OFFICIAL test because it's in print, in their favourite magazine with a picture of harry, ron, and hermione on the cover. they will be able to tell their friends (the ones not relegated to reading only things like encyclopedias and dictionaries by their helicopter parents, that is) that a magazine has independently verified their anecdotal findings. they excitedly read each question and very mindfully choose their answers in the backseat. the car ride is going quite pleasantly, and most importantly, quietly when niles and cc are suddenly startled by a loud screeching.

"SLYTHERIN?! HOW ARE WE SLYTHERIN??!"

"MUMMY, ARE WE EVIL??"

one sounds aghast and the other, near tears.

niles opens his mouth to say something and cc cuts him off. "don't you even think about it."

"i told you they were your mini mes," he smirks. "you're the reason they've now discovered their true nature."

"can it, hazel." she pulls up to a stop light and looks in her rearview mirror. "darlings, it's just a fun test. it's not to be taken seriously."

"but mummy, it's in a MAGAZINE. that means it's FOR REAL."

"yes, mummy, it's for real," niles grins.

cc glares at him again. "you know, i think daddy would love to take the test. read him the questions and the answers for him to choose from."

"babs, everyone knows i am an avowed hufflepuff. diligent, hard-working, honest..."

"it's good we're talking harry potter and not pinocchio because i could use your nose to walk from here to brooklyn."

niles is affronted. he knows to which house his loyalties lie. but in the interest of calming the twins, he agrees to take the test. he thinks about his answers carefully and, truth be told, he intentionally chooses ones he thinks more aligns with hufflepuff.

when finished, the twins both add up the points from each question. as they work, niles keeps smirking at cc and she rolls her eyes.

"daddy, you're a slytherin."

his smirk instantly disappears. "what? are you sure you added them up correctly?? do you even know your numbers over 10??"

"of course they do," cc interjects. "i let them count MY money, so i know for a fact they know their numbers up into the millions."

he grumbles. "all right, then YOU take the test!"

"i have no problem with being a slytherin," she says with a calm casualness.

"of course not. you were practically born in the chamber of secrets," he mumbles.

the twins give her the test and she breezily picks her answers as she drives.

"well??" niles says as the work to add up the points. "what is she? snape or malfoy?"

"mummy's a ravenclaw, daddy."

now it was cc's turn to smirk.

Jacob/Beruka (I paired up Jacob last and the only remaining women were Elise and Beruka and I'm not pairing up Elise. Hope their support is good because I've never read it)

Azura/Laslow ("You will be my inspiration" "and you my muse" "May our song never end" Sickening, they have replaced the inside of my brain. Also conquest makes this pair a huge ouch, an owie if you will. Also Soleil looks very pretty with light blue hair)

Silas/Charlotte (I don't know why I did this one. Sophie looks fine with blond hair, but her growth rates have very big numbers)

Niles/Selena (Bisexuals with abandonment issues, but one also has commitment issues in this specific context. Niles falling in love with Selena because of her girl fail antics and Selena saying "Alright you can hit it but we can only get married after I tell you my big secret post game". Also the Nina, Soleil, Ophelia trio being the awakening trio's kids feel right. Like they're all besties but this just feels right, you know)
