Mafia Mamma 2023 Movie Reviews
Mafia Mamma movies have been a popular sub-genre of crime films since the 1990s. These films typically feature strong female protagonists who are connected to the Mafia or organized crime in some way. The films often explore themes of family, loyalty, and betrayal, and are known for their depiction of the Italian-American community and its relationship to organized crime.
Tumblr media
One of the earliest examples of Mafia Mamma movies is the 1990 film "Goodfellas" directed by Martin Scorsese. The film tells the story of Henry Hill, a former mobster, and his wife Karen, who is played by actress Lorraine Bracco. Karen is depicted as a strong, assertive woman who is unafraid to speak her mind and stands by her husband even as he becomes increasingly involved in the Mafia. Bracco's performance in the film earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Another notable Mafia Mamma movie is "The Godfather Part III" (1990), directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The film follows the story of Michael Corleone, the head of the Corleone crime family, as he tries to legitimize his business and distance himself from organized crime. The film features the character of Mary Corleone, played by actress Sofia Coppola, who is Michael's daughter and becomes involved in the family's criminal activities.
In the 2000s, the Mafia Mamma movie genre continued to thrive with films such as "The Sopranos" (1999-2007), a television series that follows the life of Tony Soprano, a New Jersey mob boss, and his wife Carmela, played by actress Edie Falco. Carmela is portrayed as a complex character who struggles with her husband's criminal activities and her own moral compass.
Another popular Mafia Mamma movie from this era is "The Departed" (2006), directed by Martin Scorsese. The film features the character of Madolyn Madden, played by actress Vera Farmiga, who is a police psychiatrist and becomes involved in a love triangle with two undercover cops who are trying to take down a Boston crime boss.
In recent years, Mafia Mamma movies have continued to be a popular sub-genre, with films such as "The Irishman" (2019), also directed by Martin Scorsese, and "Gotti" (2018), a biographical crime film about the life of mobster John Gotti and his wife Victoria, played by actress Kelly Preston.
Overall, Mafia Mamma movies have provided audiences with compelling and complex female characters who navigate the dangerous world of organized crime. These films have explored themes of loyalty, family, and power, and have provided a unique perspective on the Italian-American community and its relationship to organized crime.

Mafia Mamma
Tumblr media
I was only sold on this movie because of Toni Collette. The trailer didn’t really pull me into wanting to see this movie.
The vibe I was expecting from Mafia Mamma was a woman being thrown into the deep end of becoming a mafia leader.
So, I sensed that I should expect the unexpected. Right?
Well, I did come in with expect the unexpected because this isn’t what I had thought it’d be based off the synopsis for this movie.
“An American mom inherits her grandfather's mafia empire in Italy. Guided by the firm's consigliere, she hilariously defies everyone's expectations as the new head of the family business.” – IMDB.
So from that I understood that this film was going to be a hybrid mix of Comedy and Crime. Two genres that haven’t had a decent collide since the mid-2000’s when this phase was HUGE.
Sadly what I got instead is a story that seems it’s been centred more towards booktok (Book lovers on tiktok) or smut fantasies. This movie had no plot, it had majority of the story of Kristin (Toni Collette) trying to work her way through Italian men who looked no older than twenty-something’s, though one of her love interests is barely scrapping the other side of 30; his age was mentioned in the movie, Kristin freaked out.
The opening scene of this movie felt quite reminiscent of Poliziotteschi; the subgenre of crime and action films in Italy, which were quite popular in the 1960s and 1970’s.
Than we are introduced to our protagonist, Kirstin and her earth shattering world from a woman whose sending her only child off to college, from a woman whose just discovered her wanna be rock star husband is cheating on her, to feeling like all she is is a mother and a soon to be divorced woman.
With the help of her token black best friend; Jenny, Kirstin is pushed her Italian fantasy of Eat, Pray, Fuck love.
The minute Kirstin gets off the plane, she is swept into the arms of Lorenzo and wanting to be his everything.
Which as someone who likes to solo travel, that is a massive red flag. No female solo traveller is smitten with the first person they see once they get off the plane, especially wanting to create a future with someone they literally just laid their eyes on and will probably forget about when they return home.
Back to Mafia Mamma, watching this movie it didn’t give the audience what it wants. I had sat in the session with about ten or so other females, females who thought they were going to get a lightheaded comedy and not something that would involve the heels of a high heel going into a man’s scrotum or into his eyeball.
This film references throughout the whole movie, Godfather and Eat, Pray, Love. Unfortunely since it’s basing itself around those two movies, it doesn’t fit. It doesn’t work. There’s a reason those two films are separate entities.
Unfortunely another thing I noticed even if it did have a storyline, it feels like it was trying to hard to fit into the  Poliziotteschi genre that was once hyped. Problem is that subgenre was huge during the 60’s/70’s rather than in the 2010’s. I know this genre tried to make a come back during the 90’s/ early 2000’s but those films haven’t exactly aged well.
I feel like Mafia Mamma won’t age well either. It feels so let down on itself, it tries its hardest to fit into the Godfather, it tries it’s hardest to fit into Eat, Pray, Love, that Mafia Mamma doesn’t have it’s own leg to stand on.

Mafia Mamma (2023) Review
This was so dumb, and yet I loved it. In case you didn’t hear about this movie, Mafia Mamma is about a middle aged mom (Toni Collette) who is put in charge of a Mafia empire after her grandfather is killed. Y’all I don’t think this movie is the right fit for most people. Too gory for the wine moms, too slapsticky for the Mafia movie fans, but this was just right for me thanks to Toni Collette’s performance. Not only that, but the movie made me consistently laugh from start to finish, which I always appreciate. You gotta know exactly what kind of movie this is and set your expectations accordingly, and you’ll probably have a good time.
8/10 i am your Mafia Mamma!

hi remy watching my favorite review channel and they did a video on this movie that came out like last month and I felt the need to tell you about it (about it, not necessarily to watch it because according to them it was really bad) it's called mafia mamma and it's directed by Catherine Hardwicke (director of the first twilight and thirteen if the name doesn't ring a bell) and it's about Toni Collette playing an American woman who receives a call from Monica Bellucci that her Italian grandfather, who was apparently a mafia boss, has died so now she has to become the boss of his mafia family? but she refuses to go to Italy at first until she finds out her husband is cheating on her which makes her change her mind so she goes to Italy to eat and make wine and be horny and run the italian mafia I guess. hope you found that amusing, have a good day!! 💗💗
This sounds fucking amazing. This sounds like Under The Tuscan Sun (MAFIA EDITION). Actually I kind of want to watch this now I don’t care if it is bad. I’m going to watch it back to back with Under The Tuscan Sun honestly. And then if I can’t somehow smash them together into some kind of very stressed compassion I MAY. I love this, this is very important AND amusing news. I love that she finds out she is to be the new boss of the mafia through a phone call. What a fucking silly way to learn that. I’m enamored. MWAH MWAH MWAH MWAH THANK YOU FOR INFORMING ME <33

Mafia Mamma Review- A Gangster Film Fans of the Genre Can Be Proud Of
There is no surprise to anybody that knows me that I am a big fan of gangster films. That being said, the first two Godfather films are two of my favorite films of all time. So when I saw that there was a new movie called Mafia Mamma starring Toni Colette I had to see it as soon as possible. And I had high expectations of it since this is one of my favorite genres of film. And it’s right in the…

Movie Review: Mafia Mamma
The problem with the new movie “Mafia Mamma” is that there is a very involved attempt to make a movie about a woman from the United States who has been appointed the head of a Mafia family in Italy funny, and almost all of these attempts fail miserably. There is nothing worse than sitting through 2 hours of a mostly bad movie, waiting for something to be funny and it never happens.
