I'd wonder if Maeriberi would have brought attention to Renko's ability/power/what have you as "creepy" if it could be explained away as simple mathematics. I don't know, I think it would be odder if she had absolutely no unusual abilities, considering Sumireko's existence. Before ULiL I might have explained it away as just incredibly fast calculations, too.

Given that Merry and Renko’s adventures take place in the distant future, Sumireko would have to be her great-great-great-grandmother at best. It’s been calculated that the next time that celestial events would occur in the order seen in their stories is around the 2150s, over a hundred years from now. Not that ZUN necessarily planned it that way, but it also seems like a reasonable estimate given the technological progress. I think with such a distant connection it’s a little weird to assume any direct connection between their abilities.

Also the ability to do intuitive math like that is a little creepy, imo. It’s definitely not something you can train yourself to do, nor is it an indication of general intelligence. It’s frankly a bizarre ability that seems somewhat more unusual than psychic powers, honestly. But that’s what makes it interesting to me.

I mean, anyone can do math. Anyone has the “power” to calculate the exact time from the positions of the star in the sky. But only Renko can do it instantly without even thinking about it. That’s weird. That’s creepy.
