Festival of International Student Theatre - deadline extended
This is a guest post on behalf of Festival of International Student Theatre. This is not a Circomedia audition.
The Festival of International Student Theatre has extended its call for applicants deadline. You now have until 20th January to apply.
The Festival of International Student Theatre (FIST) is a youth festival entirely organized by students of the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade, of the Department of Management and Production of Theatre, Radio, and Culture.
FIST is an international platform for theatre enthusiasts. Our mission is to create an environment for cooperation between Serbian and other international art students. We plan to achieve this by inviting students and professors from international art academies to participate in our program. By accepting 5 to 8 plays every year, our Festival offers an attractive diversity of student theatre practices from around the world. Our participants and guests will have an opportunity to take part in other festival activities and programs, as well.
This year FIST 12 will take place from 23rd to 26th of March 2017. Festival will take place at a multidisciplinary art commune “Dorćol Platz”, but also in other cultural institutions in Belgrade, Serbia.
What is our concept for this year?
Theatre and performing arts always have been used to portray different socio-political circumstances of different periods and ever since Ancient Greece theatre represented the mirror of the certain society.
Seeing art as a tool in facing and solving personal as well as social problems, this year’s topic of FIST 12 will be CIRCUS.
Why CIRCUS?
We all think of circus as something famous for its acrobatics, travelling troupes and much more, BUT circus in Serbian language has another meaning in which lies the whole concept of FIST 12. Colloquially, CIRCUS as a word in Serbian language is used to describe mess, disharmony and madness.
In our modern society we are faced with corruption, economy crisis, collapse of value systems and moral, unemployment, terrorist attacks and much more. The society in which young people rarely have an opportunity to speak up about all the important subject that affect us as youth leaving us with the feeling of walking on a thin wire.
We can’t help the feeling of being the puppets in someone else’s circus show instead of being its joyful, satisfied audience.
Using CIRCUS as our means of expression, with this year’s concept we want to unravel the circus we’re living in. Through our festival we want to point out the problems of our society.
That's why this CIRCUS is our platform to, with YOUR help, point out all these issues of modern society, juggle different topics, pose important questions and more importantly – try to give the answers and to, using theatre, find solutions to young people's problems.
FIST 12 CIRCUS is your chance to speak up about topics that trouble you, that trouble us together, to communicate with different audiences and that's why we invite to jump through the hoop and join us in Belgrade this March!
Who can participate / Festival rules?
• A play has to be made through an educational process at a faculty or an academy of drama and the performing arts, directed and performed by students. The authors and the performers do not only have to be students if they have finished their studies in 2015/2016;
•Each faculty or academy can compete with one play;
•The number of troop members – the artists and technicians – should not exceed 12 (when exceeding, the group will be asked to cover meals and accommodation expenses in amount of 30 Euro a day per every extra member.);
•The troop should be accompanied by one professor. Professors are invited to make a presentation of their academy at FIST 12 or to give lectures and workshops in arrangement with the FIST team;
•Duration of the play should not exceed 120 minutes;
• The Director or Administrator of the troop is responsible for the discipline of troop members. The troop is responsible for any damage caused by their members, accidental or deliberate, and will cover its cost;
• During FIST 12, accommodation and food are provided for selected participating troops and professors (the costs of travel and transport are to be covered by the participants);
• The festival will provide a representative to meet the troop at the arrival airport, train or bus station and accompany it during the visit.
• FIST is open to verbal and non-verbal theatre. We welcome every kind of performance, circus, methodical, thematic, technologic, and spatial diversities, even site specific plays can be considered.
• Official languages of the Festival are Serbian and English. The participating troops are required to prepare English subtitle for their performance. The participating troop is also required to provide a person who will manage the subtitles during the performance.
• Competitive plays in main program are judged by the independent professional jury for the Grand-Prix of the Festival – Best Performance and the Audience Award.
