Laura hit the water hard.  She flailed in its cold, unyielding grip, inhaling a gasp’s worth of liquid in shock as she fought the tangling fabric of her dress to get her feet beneath her.  Finally, after what felt like ages but was likely only a few seconds, she surfaced, coughing and gasping for breath.  The pool was shallow enough that she could stand if she stayed on her tiptoes, but her vision blurred as she sputtered, the chlorine stinging her eyes as she blinked the water out of them.  Only when she was sure her lungs were mostly clear and she could begin to hear the party again over her own heartbeat, did she reach numbly to push her hair out of her face, so she could look for an exit or an ally.  Laura thought she heard one of the men from before call out to her, but she turned to face the opposite direction, fast enough to upset the water again.  Despite the chill beginning to seep into her bones, her face burned.

Picture: Laura always asks before taking a picture, and always reminds her subject to “Smile!”  She got this one just before they left for central park.  She didn’t say so, but his camera-ready smile still eases her nerves just as well as it used to, and she had many nerves to ease that day.
