Visiting Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas, is like retreating into the ancient times. It is a trip where you stand beneath the temples and walls of an era that longer exists. A trek to Machu Picchu combines a historically significant destination with a surreal stroll through the wilderness of the Inca Trail. It may not sound much of a honeymoon destination but not all couples out there are looking to spend their holidays on beaches. Climbing and walking through the culture-filled pathway to Machu Picchu is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. All visitors need to adjust to the thin air so you can make the best use of your time by exploring Cusco.

When Paulo and I got married last January, we chose Peru to be our honeymoon destination. This was also what we’ve chosen when asked by friends of what we wanted as a gift. Thankfully, our friends were generous to fund our plane tickets to Peru. Yay! However, it took us over 9 months to go there due to busy schedules and other short trips that we’ve planned for the year. It was worth the wait though. In the next few minutes, hundred words and xx number of pictures, allow me to share with you our beautiful trip to Peru. <3
We stayed in Peru from October 08 to 20, it’s honestly not enough to discover the beauty of the country but we tried to make the most out of every minute of our stay. We left Geneva on the 07th, our flight with company Air France entailed 50 minutes from Geneva to Paris and a straight 12-hr flight from Paris to Lima! Whew! Not for the claustrophobic! We managed to get a last-minute upgrade offer from Economy to  Premium Economy for our Paris to Lima leg for a very affordable price and thanks to that, we were very comfortable for 12 hours! I’d say, we were quite happy with AirFrance with the whole trip, seats are comfortable, in-flight entertainment was up to date, crew was friendly. :)
OFF WE GO!
Tumblr media
We arrived in Lima on the 07th in the evening and we were basically tired to do anything more, all we wanted was a good dinner, hot bath and a good sleep to give us the boost for the next days. Jet lag was friendly going this direction so we didn’t have any problems waking up early everyday! :)
In this blog, I’ll also try to mention the hostels in where we’ve stayed and a quick review for each one of them.In Miraflores, we stayed in Sol de Miraflores. I’d say it was ok for its price, - clean beds, friendly staff, it was a bit noisy at night though as it’s situated in a commercial area but was manageable, very tiny shower room, haha and they have breakfast included. It was $27 per person/night. 3 out 5 stars.
1st (official) day : 08/10/2016 - MIRAFLORES, LIMA
We didn’t really have a concrete plan on what we wanted to do in Miraflores. We only had one day and Paulo and I are normally spontaneous in occasions like this, we like getting lost in the city. Our hostel’s receptionist though suggested a museum which was just 10 minutes away so we gave it a go.
The museum is called ‘Huaca Pucllana’ which is an adobe and clay pyramid built from seven staggered platforms. It served as an important ceremonial and administrative centre for the advancement of the Lima culture, a society which developed in the Peruvian Central Coast between the years of 200 AD and 700 AD. It was quite impressive to witness these ruins located amidst a now developed and commercialised Miraflores, right next to it was a residential area too.
Tumblr media
We spent 1 hour visiting around and our guide was very informative. It’s only 12 S/. to get in and it was worth it as we’ve learned so much about the Lima culture. Next, we went around the city and boy, it was breath-taking! Lima is so lucky to be situated by the coast of the Pacific ocean, it was delightful experience.
BEING IN THE CITY AND SO CLOSE TO NATURE <3
Tumblr media
We spent a good day in the city, we also went to the city centre which reminded me so much of Manila! It felt like home as there are so many similarities between Lima and Manila like the traffic, people (not always) look the same due to the Spanish colonisation. Even our language share a lot of the same words. On our first day we already got acquainted with the prices. It might be too early to say this but this applies for our whole trip : FOOD in Lima has a wide price range, you can have amazing food for a very cheap price,  you just have to avoid the commercial and expensive places! haha! DRINKS on the contrary are quite expensive! It’s roughly the same amount we pay in Geneva but more of that later.
Now before I end DAY 1, it’s important to mention that during the day we also dropped by the pharmacy to buy ‘Sorojchi’ pills. It’s available over-the-counter and it helps with altitude sickness. YES! ALTITUDE SICKNESS! Something we have tried preparing ourselves with 2 weeks before going to Peru. Part of our agenda was Cusco and of course Machu Picchu, it’s important to note that Cusco has an altitude of 3400m above sea level and with the hikes that we’ve also planned, it was just essential that we were both fit and ready for the altitude changes. We took Gingko capsules (once a day two weeks before leaving for Peru and continued it in Peru), hydrated a lot and took Sorojchi pills (once a day).
So, that’s it for the 1st day. We had lunch at Pardo’s chicken which was quite average, we paid over 60S/. for two meals. Then we had fruits in the evening before going to bed at around 21h00ish. :)
2nd day : 09/10/2016 - CUSCO, LIMA
We woke up early on our 2nd day as we had or flight to Cusco at around 8AMish. Our hostel arranged a taxi for us and we paid $20 from Miraflores to the airport. Taxis in Lima and notably in the other places that we visited are quite reliable. They arrive on time and the drivers are very friendly too. I forgot to mention that Paulo speaks Spanish very well and this skill came handy during the whole trip. :) We got to the airport and two things i wanna mention are : 1.) There aren’t a lot of food choices after security so it’s better to eat something quickly at the huge food court they have before security and 2.) bringing water is allowed if traveling domestically, we even saw people carrying 2 litres of water bottles and it was perfectly okay. It took us 1hr and 20 minutes to get to Cusco and we took Avianca Airlines (which reminded me of Pablo Escobar, haha). The moment we got to Cusco, we already felt the changes in altitude. We didn’t feel sick but we we’re easily tired! Haha! When we got to the airport, we booked a package tour for Cusco with a tourism company and the lady gave us a couple of Coca leaves and asked us to chew them to help us even more with the altitude changes. OKAY NOW, THREE THINGS (and this applies to the whole trip)
1.) Package tours in most of Peru are VERY, VERY convenient! they literally pick you up from your hostel, and take you back at the end of the day, it includes a guide and depending on the tour you’ve chosen, some are inclusive of a lunch buffet
2.) Booking them in advance, or booking them upon arrival doesn’t really make a huge price difference, except there are some trips like the Rainbow Mountain that had to be booked in advance, we also booked Machu Picchu, the Inca train tickets and our bus tickets from Cusco to Puno in advance but most of the day tours are ok to be arranged upon arrival
3.) Coca leaves are so DAMN effective, hah! We never felt tired but didn’t abuse its usage neither. We mainly had in the mornings. You can chew it (it tastes like seaweed) hehe for 5 minutes or have is as tea which we did everyday. It’s available everywhere and in every form haha like candies, liquor, etc. However, I believe it is illegal to take outside Peru.
We went to our hostel in Cusco called Panay Guest house, and I found it really cute. The owner is friendly and she manages the hostel with her two kids. The only thing I wasn’t happy about is the lack of heating in the rooms but other than that, it was quite a nice place to stay and worth what we’ve paid for.
We spent the whole day walking in Cusco. It is a beautiful city with a mix of both Incan and Spanish architecture. For lunch we found ourselves in the Chicaronerria. Apparently, in Peru you can find this almost anywhere and same thing goes with Polleria where they save chicken meals and Civecheria where they serve of course, Ceviche.
I loved the Chicharonerria where we were as we were surrounded by legit locals who chugged huge glasses of beer while Peruvian music played in the background. It felt like a scene taken off from a Quentin Tarantino movie. The food was really good and they had huge servings that we had to take half of it back home to have for dinner.
Tumblr media
It’s always a delight to experience the authentic, local food.
We continued our day walking around the city while getting astonished with how  the Incas build most of the buildings. We knew that what we were seeing was just a bit of what they have created.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here I am trying to look like a local with my lovely poncho (also one of my fave picture from the trip)
Tumblr media
We ended our day with what we found out later wasn’t the best idea. We tried the famous local cocktail, Pisco sour. It was good! We liked it but we weren’t sure if it was the fatigue or the altitude that got as knackered just after the first glass. We walked home tipsy.
3rd day : 10/10/2016 - CUSCO, LIMA
3rd day in Cusco and we woke up with a massive headache! It must’ve been the Pisco sour the night before. We were dehydrated and felt sick but we had to be ready before 9am as we booked a tour for the day. Magically, the crap that we were feeling was quickly over after a glass of Coca-infused tea. We thought to ourselves that this has yet to be one of nature’s best invention.
10 minutes before 9am we were outside the hostel waiting for ur service to pick us up. 20 minutes later we were still outside, it wasn’t as punctual as we have expected. A guy with his pen and board rushed to us and confirmed our names then exclaimed, “listo!” We walked fast to go to the meeting point which was 2 blocks away then we hopped to the bus with all the other tourists most of who spoke Spanish. I’d say only me and maybe three others didn’t speak the language. We then started with the tour but it was quite a mess to get outside the city center. Who knew that the morning rush hour exists in Cusco.
Our first stop was in a village of artisan shops one after the next. It was clearly an idea to boost the livelihood of the local community. Paulo and I don’t like shopping in general so we just looked around and enjoyed the colorful handicrafts displayed. just before going back to the bus we had a quite surprise and saw Llamas outside beautifully dressed ad decorated to lure tourists. I just had to take a picture with them! Afterall, #squadgoals
Tumblr media
We then proceeded to our first historical Inca site - the Pisaq. The Pisaq is a village in the Sacred Valley situated at the Willkanuta River. Pisac is most known for its Incan ruins and large market every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday, an event which attracts heavy tourist traffic from nearby Cusco. There’s just a huge number of tourists in Cusco everyday and Pisaq was no exception. We weren’t entirely lucky with the weather as it rained just when we reached the top of it. This didn’t hinder us from taking pictures though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was majestic and definitely breath-taking!
Our next stop was Ollantaytambo. During the Inca Empire, Ollantaytambo was the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti who conquered the region, built the town and a ceremonial center. At the time of the spanish conquest in Peru, it served as a stronghold for Manco Inca Yupanqui, leader of the Inca resistance. Nowadays, located in what is called the Sacred Valley of the Incas, it is an important tourist attraction on account of its Inca ruins and its location en route to one of the most common starting points for the four-day, three-night hike known as the Inca Trail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We ended up our day by visiting a village called Chinchero with a women who up to this day practices a traditional Inca way of coloring Alpaca wool. It was nice to see this experience. They start by cleaning the wool with a root called Saqta before using fruits or plants to get a variation of colors.
Tumblr media
We got home tired but very happy with the productive and enriching day.
4th day : 11/10/2016 - CUSCO, LIMA
On our fourth day, we still stayed in Cusco and we visited the city a bit more.
5th day : 12/10/2016 - Machu Picchu
THE DAY OF ONE OF OUR HIGHLIGHTS. The day that we waited for has arrived. We’ve already warmed up with al the Inca richness during our first few days in Cusco, but its pinnacle was to witness the ethereal Inca site : Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.]In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide Internet poll.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since we only had 14 days in Peru we didn’t decide to go on a complete hike to Machu Picchu. There are several ways to visit this imperial Inca site. there are hikes that go on as long as four days to a day hike that starts at Aguas Calientes. We kinda wanted to do the day hike but we were reserving our energy for another major hike that we planned on doing.
Take note that Aguas Calientes is very expensive as a place. It is where all tourists can get bus rides up to Machu Picchu. There’s not much to see or do in aguas Calientes. We left our hostel at 5am in the morning but with the long line, we got in the bus at 7am. Going up to Machu Picchu only takes 30 minutes. Some people go as early as 4am to the top to witness the sunrise which we also wanted to do however, the cloudy weather didn’t seem promising. We spent 3 hrs on Machu Picchu which is good enough time to visit everything unless planning to Wayna Picchu which is a different story.
Machu Picchu was breathtaking! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it. It really proves that the Incas are the greatest builders of all time. There have been rumors though of shutting it down due to excessive number of tourists that come everyday which is causing now its demotion little by little each year. Some said that they will build a glass bridge above it to allow people to see it still while some say that they might just change one of the rules which is wearing tennis shoes instead of hiking shoes when visiting the place to minimize any further deterioration.
After visiting the majestic Inca empire, we took the bus at 12NN after having our passports stamped (which btw is free) and had a quick lunch at Aguas Calientes before taking the 2pm Inca trail train ride back to Ollantaytambo which took 1 hour and 50 minutes. From Ollantaytambo, we were picked by up by the tour company and we went back to Cusco. What a lovely day.
6th day : 13/10/2016 - Cusco
This day was our rest day and we took the day to go around Cusco and visit the other areas we haven’t been to. We visited the neighborhood of San Blas which was both artisan and touristic. We ended up in small house that sells fresh fruits shakes and talked to us about a secret path to go to the Cristo Blanco monument without paying entry. She gave us the directions and we gave it a shot. Turned out this path was super steep, a good 10 min climb but really steepy and with the dry soil, it was quite slippery. But the view was worth it. we were high enough to get a view of the whole city of Cusco. We also saw the Cristo Blanco and another Inca site.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
7th day : 14/10/2016 - The Rainbow Mountains
The day has come! As much as Machu Picchu was really the climax of our trip, we were also hyped and excited about the Rainbow Mountains for the reason that it is still not yet overly touristic and it’s one of a kind. I have read that the rainbow mountains only exist in three countries: Peru, China and Chile. This is also the reason why we didn’t hike up to Machu Picchu so we could reserve our energy for this one hike which starts from an altitude of 4800 and ends with 5200. Not much right? But with lack of oxygen due to higher altitude, we didn’t want to underestimate this one.
We woke up at 1:30 in the morning as the van was picking us up at 2:00. The drive from Cusco to the Rainbow Mountains was 4 hours and we were roughly 8 people heading altogether to this adventure. Then we arrived. To our disappointment, the Rainbow Mountains were covered with snow! YES! SNOW! We were so unlucky as the day before and apparently after were really sunny! This was a bit of heartbreak for us as we really wanted to see the beauty. In the end we just had breakfast in the tent and got a 50% refund for what we paid and decided not to go, although a few decided to continue. We chose not to since we didn’t have waterproof or snowproof hiking shoes, and we knew that we would just be disappointed in the end. We went to the hostel with a heavy heart but then hey! it’s all part of the trip! It was nice to see Alpacas covered in snow though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were back at cusco at around 13:00 since we stopped somewhere to have lunch and we ended up getting a really nice message in the evening.
8th day : 15/10/2016 - The Road to Puno
I don’t know why but this is also one of my favorite parts of the trip: the 6 hr bus ride from Cusco to Puno. We have seen the most amazing views, nature kept surprising us with its different elements and colors. It also allowed us time to talk about how the past few days have been. I always love having conversations with my love. And at some moments, it also allowed me to meditate. It always a nice feeling to just look outside the window, enjoy the beauty of nature while contemplating about life or just simply being grateful and appreciative of the moment. We even managed to make a funny video to the Peruvian version of one of our favorite Spanish songs ‘La Playa’ by La Oreja de Van Gogh. The bus was huge and they were barely anyone but us and another man, at least on the first floor.
Tumblr media
9th day : 16/10/2016 - Lake Titicaca
The day before, we arrived in Puno late in the afternoon. It was very hot and dry in Puno and altitude is higher than Cusco at 3800m. We walked around the city and had a nice dinner. Food is delicious anywhere in Peru and it reminded me so much too of Filipino food. We went back to our hostel and slept with a content heart.
The next day, we had a while breakfast while waiting for the van that will take us to the next destination: Lake Titicaca. I didn’t really know much about it so I didn’t have any expectations at all. We arrived at the port and took the boat to the Uros Islands in lake Titicaca and there it easily became the part of the trip that had a spiritual effect on me.
Lake Titicaca is the largest navigational lake in the world. This is also where we find The Uros. The Uros use the totora reed, which is plentiful along the edges of the lake, to make their homes, their furniture, their boats, and the islands they live on. Their boats, which are shaped like canoes, but with animal heads at the prow, are used for fishing and to bring visitors out to the islands, which are usually moored to the bottom of the lake, but can be moved if necessary. As reeds disintegrate from the bottom of the islands, which are four to eight feet thick, residents must add more to the surface, which is soft and occasionally spongy.
This is what striked me the most. I really felt a huge pinch in my heart as I experienced that moment with them. A very simple life, all the family members doing their tasks to help each other, no internet, no cars, no fancy nor luxurious stuff but you can tell that they are happy. Paulo and I asked ourselves a question after leaving Titicaca. Who is happier? Them or us?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was an emotional moment for me but also an awakening of some sorts. I will treasure that moment forever. After leaving The Uros we went to Taquile Island where we had our lunch. Taquile Island gives a breathtaking view.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have to mention something about this day. We left Taquile Island at around 15:00 and the guide told us that there may be waves but they wouldn’t be that much. Guess what? Almost everyone got sick on the way back. :D
10th day : 17/10/2016 - The Road to Arequipa
The bus ride to Arequipa also offered stunning views as the bus ride to Puno. Going to Arequipa takes 2.30 hrs and we also got to stop from time to time to take pictures. These are some of my favorites:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We arrived in Arequipa and immediately saw the change of architecture that speaks of the Spanish colonisation. Traffic in Arequipa is no different than in Manila. We arrived at Marlon’s House hostel which was very nice and spent the rest of the day visiting the city. Arequipa is beautiful. I am sure more a fan of all the other places we’ve visited but Arequipa also has a nice feel to it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We had a drink at a bar near the hostel and I lost one pair of my earrings which I managed to retrieve the next day. :)
11th day : 18/10/2016 - Colca Canyon
A lot of people told us to visit the Colca Canyon and so we did. We were picked up at the hostel at 04:00 then stopped somewhere for breakfast. Colca Canyon was glorious but it was very touristique and is my least favorite of the trip. It was still a good decision to go there.
Tumblr media
12th day : 19/10/2016 - Flight back to Lima
In this day, we still spent the morning around Arequipa then our flight to Lima was in the afternoon. In Lima, we stayed in the same hostel and decided to go on a date as it was our last evening in Peru. We went to Panchita, a restaurant highly recommended by a Peruvian friend. There was waiting time when we got there as apparently, a lot of people flock to this restaurant. It’s also a bit pricey compared to what we have been spending on food the days before bit it was really delicious. I tried Anticucho on our first day in Lima but I didn’t really like it but the Anticuchos I had at Panchita was really good. We paired everything with the classic Pisco Sour. I had a great evening with my love. It was almost the end of our trip.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
13th day : 20/10/2016 -Baranco
Our last day. We left the hostel after having breakfast and left our bags so we could have one last visit to the city as our flight was still in the evening. We went to Baranco which is the city next to Miraflores. As I remember we really had a long walk to go to Baranco. It was a city very chic and artsy with a lot of small shops, restaurants and coffee shops. Unfortunately, our last day in Peru is when I got really sick. I had a terrible stomach pain walking back to our hostel in Miraflores. It must’ve been everything that I have been eating or digestion problems, I don’t really know. We picked our stuff at the hostel, took a cab and off we were to the airport. We weren’t lucky this time as we didn’t get an upgrade nor was it cheap to get one. Thankfully, with the help of my chéri, I felt better just before boarding and we both slept deeply during the flight.
We arrived in Paris to take the next plane to Geneva and I felt this sudden change in energy. We were back to reality. Just a few hours ago, we were on the other side of the planet. We arrived in Geneva, tired but fulfilled. I really believe that every time I travel, something changes inside me. Travelling keeps me grounded, aware and humble.
We made a video that we also sent to our friends on the day of our 1st year anniversary. It was a way to thank them for contributing to our beautiful journey. My chéri did a great job in editing the video. Below is the link. :)

Guidelines That Will Prepare You For The Rainbow Mountain Peru Tour
Once upon a time, there was nothing but ice and snow on the caps of the mountains of Cusco. The ice started melting which allowed the sediments to settle and amass on top of each other. Each element in the deposition had different compositions, and tectonic plates squeezed them together. This natural activity resulted in the magnificent hue of shades that you will witness here. The stripes range from red, yellow, green, lavender, and turquoise. The sight of this unique landscape is stunning from every perceptible aspect. However, you need to prepare yourself well before hiking this location. Your travel agents have a few recommendations for you.

Take your time: The conductors of the Rainbow Mountain Peru Tour, which you booked from phototoursperu.com, ask you to take your time to acclimatize. Cusco is about three thousand and six hundred meters above sea level. You should try and break the acclimatization procedure in steps. Start with the low altitude areas and then gradually move on the high ones.
Hydration is essential: Wherever you’re hiking, hydration is something you can’t neglect. Since you’re going to enjoy the Rainbow Mountain Peru Tour, you have to understand that the altitude will make things difficult for your body. The height affects the human system by slowing down the rate of creation of more red blood corpuscles. A parched throat can land you straight to a hospital if you aren’t drinking water regularly.
Tumblr media
The breathing: Breathing will get tedious with every step you take if you’re not a hiking aficionado. Try inhaling and exhaling deeply and forcefully while moving. You should not walk too fast and pause for a breath every few minutes. You will find climbing easier if you can harmonize breathing and your movements. Stick to this technique and take water breaks now and then.
Start moving early: You’re out on a leisure trip, and you will want the tour to be easy-going, but you must incorporate some exercises. You don’t have to run around, but you can walk to explore the town once you arrive. These efforts will acclimatize you and prepare you for the oxygen deficiency. Your body will begin manufacturing new red blood cells, but that won’t happen if you spend your day in bed.
Tumblr media
Coca leaves and alcohol: You know how efficient alcohol can be to increase the rate of headaches and cause dehydration. So, refrain from it if you don’t want the trip to end before it even begins. You can also try chewing coca leaves like the locals. It is a remedy that the people of the area rely on to cure altitude sickness and stomach problems. The ingestion of coca leaves is an age-old tonic, and it works excellently.
Uncover the secrets
Now you have all the weapons in your arsenal that you need to beat acclimatization issues. So, set out on a journey to uncover the hidden truths of Peru. The Rainbow Mountains are one of the most intriguingly remarkable visual feasts on the entire continent. Your eyes will stare at the wondrous sight, but your brain will struggle to contemplate its existence. You will not be able to come to terms with the fact that such a place actually exists. Don’t hesitate to pack your bags and step out the door because this hidden treasure of Peru is summoning you to exploit it.
