All I have been able to find out about Tempted by Jazz Cartier.
A short scene from the video of Tempted appears the TV adaptation of The Cuckoo's Calling.
Cormoran Strike meets DI Eric Wardle to discuss Lula Landry's death. Wardle mentions Deeby Macc and Strike doesn't recognise the name. Later, while walking outdoors he asks Robin if she knows who Deeby Macc is, and she says yes, and on their return to the office she finds the video to show him, and says, 'So, this is Deeby.'
This is the video on YouTube:
youtube
Also available via a range of music services online, list via Jazz's website.
According to Wikipedia, Tempted is from Jazz's second album, Fleurever. It was "premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio on January 3, 2017 on Apple Music, but was released for digital download as a single on iTunes on January 6, 2017."
"The song peaked at number 91 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart, which became his highest and only charting single to date."
Songwriting credits to Jahmarie Adams (Jazz himself) Tyler Williams (producer T-minus), Micheal Lantz and Sean Fischer.

Regarding the video, a contemporary fanzine article says, Toronto rapper Jazz Cartier laid out his big career ambitions to The FADER in 2015. With the video for "Tempted," the first single off his upcoming album Fleurever, he displays acting chops for a big budget action movie. The clip is a classic "James Bond gets captured by the bad guys at a fancy party" scene and, like any good hero, Jazz makes an impressive escape.
In an email to The FADER, Jazz Cartier said, ""Tempted" is my first single off Fleurever and it's an intro of what's to come. For the visual, I wanted to play off the energy of the track and bring a cinematic experience that includes suspense and edge."
Tumblr media
The song seems to have been regarded by many fans as underrated, with many comments to this effect under the YouTube video.
Jazz Cartier is still active on Twitter and other social media under that name.

Chicken & Waffles
A classic Southern comfort dish that combines crispy fried chicken with fluffy waffles, often drizzled with maple syrup. Ingredients: For the Fried Chicken: - 2 pounds chicken pieces (legs, thighs, wings) - 2 cups buttermilk - 2 cups all-purpose flour - 1 tablespoon garlic powder - 1 tablespoon onion powder - 1 teaspoon smoked paprika - Salt and black pepper to taste - Vegetable oil for frying For the Waffles: - 2 cups all-purpose flour - 2 tablespoons sugar - 1 tablespoon baking powder - 1/2 teaspoon salt - 1 3/4 cups milk - 1/3 cup vegetable oil - 2 large eggs - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Instructions: 1. Marinate the Chicken: - Place the chicken pieces in a large bowl and pour buttermilk over them. Let them marinate for at least 1-2 hours or overnight in the refrigerator. 2. Preheat the Oven: - Preheat your oven to 200°F (to keep the cooked chicken warm while preparing the waffles). 3. Prepare the Dry Coating for Chicken: - In a shallow dish, mix flour, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. 4. Bread the Chicken: - Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. - Take each marinated chicken piece, allowing excess buttermilk to drip off, and dredge it in the seasoned flour mixture, ensuring an even coating. 5. Fry the Chicken: - Fry the chicken pieces in the hot oil until they are golden brown and crispy. This usually takes about 15-20 minutes, depending on the size of the chicken pieces. Ensure that the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C). 6. Keep Chicken Warm: - Place the fried chicken on a wire rack on a baking sheet and keep it warm in the preheated oven while you make the waffles. 7. Prepare the Waffle Batter: - In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. - In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. - Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; some lumps are okay. 8. Cook the Waffles: - Preheat your waffle iron and lightly grease it. - Pour the batter onto the waffle iron and cook according to the manufacturer's instructions until the waffles are golden brown and crisp. 9. Serve: - Place a crispy fried chicken piece on top of a waffle and drizzle with maple syrup. - You can add butter, hot sauce, or additional toppings according to your preference. 10. Enjoy: - Serve the chicken and waffles immediately while the chicken is still crispy and the waffles are warm. Enjoy this delicious and soulful combination of flavors and textures!
Gumbo
A rich and hearty stew originating from Louisiana, typically made with a strong-flavored stock, meat or shellfish, and vegetables such as celery, bell peppers, and onions. Ingredients: - 1 cup all-purpose flour - 1 cup vegetable oil - 1 large onion, finely chopped - 1 bell pepper, finely chopped - 2 celery stalks, finely chopped - 3 cloves garlic, minced - 1 pound andouille sausage, sliced - 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces (or 3-4 pounds of chicken thighs/drumsticks) - 8 cups chicken broth - 1 can (14 ounces) crushed tomatoes - 1 cup okra, sliced (fresh or frozen) - 1 teaspoon dried thyme - 1 bay leaf - Salt and pepper to taste - File powder (optional, for serving) - Cooked white rice for serving Instructions: - Prepare the Roux: - In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, combine the flour and vegetable oil over medium heat. - Stir continuously to prevent burning. - Keep cooking and stirring until the roux turns a dark chocolate brown color. This process may take about 20-30 minutes. Be patient; the color of the roux is crucial for the flavor of the gumbo. - Add Vegetables: - Once the roux reaches the desired color, add the chopped onion, bell pepper, celery, and minced garlic. - Cook the vegetables in the roux until they are softened, about 5-7 minutes. - Brown the Sausage and Chicken: - Add the sliced andouille sausage to the pot and cook until it starts to brown. - Brown the chicken pieces in the roux, turning them to sear on all sides. - Add Broth and Tomatoes: - Gradually add the chicken broth to the pot, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. - Add the crushed tomatoes, dried thyme, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine. - Simmer: - Bring the gumbo to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for about 1 to 1.5 hours. Stir occasionally. - Add Okra: - About 30 minutes before serving, add the sliced okra to the gumbo. This helps to thicken the gumbo and adds a unique flavor. - Adjust Seasoning: - Taste the gumbo and adjust the seasoning as needed. Add more salt, pepper, or thyme if necessary. - Serve: - Remove the bay leaf before serving. - Serve the gumbo over a bed of cooked white rice. - Optionally, you can sprinkle file powder on individual servings for an extra layer of flavor. Enjoy your homemade Southern Gumbo! This dish often gets even better the next day as the flavors meld together.
Shrimp and Grits
Shrimp and grits is a classic Southern dish that combines creamy grits with savory and succulent shrimp. Ingredients: For the Grits: - 1 cup stone-ground grits - 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth - 1 cup milk - Salt and pepper to taste - 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional) - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter For the Shrimp: - 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined - 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning (adjust to taste) - 2 tablespoons olive oil - 4 cloves garlic, minced - 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved - 1/2 cup chicken broth - Juice of 1 lemon - Salt and pepper to taste - Fresh parsley for garnish Instructions: 1. Prepare the Grits: - In a medium saucepan, bring the broth and milk to a boil. - Gradually whisk in the grits, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the grits are thick and creamy. This may take about 20-25 minutes. - Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese (if using), butter, salt, and pepper. Keep warm. 2. Season and Cook the Shrimp: - In a bowl, toss the shrimp with Cajun seasoning, making sure they are well coated. - Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. - Add the seasoned shrimp to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side or until they are opaque and cooked through. Remove the shrimp from the skillet and set aside. 3. Prepare the Sauce: - In the same skillet, add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant. - Add halved cherry tomatoes and cook for another 2 minutes. - Pour in chicken broth and lemon juice, scraping the bottom of the skillet to incorporate any flavorful bits. 4. Combine Shrimp and Sauce: - Return the cooked shrimp to the skillet, toss to coat them in the sauce, and let them heat through for another 2 minutes. - Season with salt and pepper to taste. 5. Serve: - Spoon a generous portion of the creamy grits onto plates. - Top the grits with the Cajun shrimp and sauce. - Garnish with fresh parsley. 6. Enjoy: - Serve immediately, and enjoy the delicious combination of creamy grits and flavorful shrimp! Feel free to customize the dish with additional ingredients like bacon, green onions, or a squeeze of extra lemon juice according to your taste preferences.
Collard Greens
Slow-cooked collard greens seasoned with smoked ham hock or bacon for a flavorful side dish that's a staple in Southern cuisine. Ingredients: - 2 bunches of collard greens - 1/2 pound smoked ham hock or bacon (optional for additional flavor) - 1 large onion, finely chopped - 3 cloves garlic, minced - 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth - 1 to 2 teaspoons red pepper flakes (adjust to taste) - Salt and black pepper to taste - 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar (optional) - 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, to balance bitterness) - Hot sauce for serving Instructions: 1. Prepare the Collard Greens: - Wash the collard greens thoroughly under cold water. Remove the tough stems and ribs, then stack the leaves and chop them into bite-sized pieces. 2. Cook the Smoked Ham Hock or Bacon: - If using smoked ham hock or bacon, cook it in a large pot over medium heat until it begins to render its fat and becomes slightly crispy. 3. Sauté Onions and Garlic: - Add the finely chopped onion to the pot and sauté until it becomes translucent. - Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant. 4. Add Collard Greens: - Add the chopped collard greens to the pot in batches, allowing them to wilt slightly before adding more. Stir frequently to ensure even cooking. 5. Pour in Broth: - Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth to cover the collard greens. You can add more if needed. The liquid will help the collard greens cook down and become tender. 6. Season: - Season with red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper to taste. Adjust the heat level based on your preference. 7. Simmer: - Bring the pot to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and let the collard greens simmer for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until they are tender. 8. Adjust Flavor: - Taste the collard greens and adjust the seasoning. If the collards are too bitter, you can add a tablespoon of sugar to balance the flavors. For a touch of acidity, add apple cider vinegar. 9. Serve: - Serve the collard greens hot, and drizzle with hot sauce if desired. Collard greens pair well with cornbread or rice. Enjoy this classic Southern side dish
Jambalaya
Jambalaya is a flavorful one-pot dish that originated from the Creole and Cajun cuisines of Louisiana. It typically consists of rice, meat (such as sausage, chicken, and sometimes seafood), and a mix of aromatic vegetables and spices. Ingredients: - 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces - 1 pound Andouille sausage, sliced - 1 large onion, finely chopped - 1 bell pepper, finely chopped - 2 celery stalks, finely chopped - 3 cloves garlic, minced - 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes - 1 teaspoon dried thyme - 1 teaspoon dried oregano - 1 teaspoon paprika - 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste) - 2 cups long-grain white rice - 4 cups chicken broth - Salt and black pepper to taste - Green onions and fresh parsley for garnish Instructions: 1. Sear the Chicken: - In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven, heat a bit of oil over medium-high heat. - Brown the chicken pieces on all sides until they develop a golden color. Remove the chicken from the pot and set it aside. 2. Sauté the Sausage and Vegetables: - In the same pot, add the sliced Andouille sausage and cook until it starts to brown. - Add chopped onion, bell pepper, celery, and minced garlic. Sauté until the vegetables are softened. 3. Add Tomatoes and Spices: - Stir in the diced tomatoes, dried thyme, dried oregano, paprika, and cayenne pepper. Cook for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld. 4. Add Rice: - Add the rice to the pot, stirring to coat it with the vegetable and spice mixture. 5. Incorporate Chicken and Broth: - Return the seared chicken to the pot. - Pour in the chicken broth, stirring well to combine. 6. Simmer: - Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and has absorbed the liquid. 7. Adjust Seasoning: - Taste the jambalaya and adjust the seasoning with salt, black pepper, and additional cayenne pepper if more heat is desired. 8. Finish and Serve: - Once the rice is cooked, fluff it with a fork. - Garnish the jambalaya with chopped green onions and fresh parsley. 9. Serve Hot: - Serve the jambalaya hot, and enjoy the rich and spicy flavors! Jambalaya is a versatile dish, so feel free to customize it by adding shrimp, crawfish, or other ingredients according to your taste preferences.
Red Beans & Rice
A comforting and hearty dish made with red kidney beans, sausage, and aromatic spices served over steamed white rice. Ingredients: - 1 pound dried red kidney beans - 1 pound Andouille sausage, sliced - 1 large onion, finely chopped - 1 bell pepper, finely chopped - 2 celery stalks, finely chopped - 3 cloves garlic, minced - 2 bay leaves - 1 teaspoon dried thyme - 1 teaspoon dried oregano - 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste) - Salt and black pepper to taste - 4 cups chicken broth - 4 cups water - Cooked white rice for serving - Chopped green onions and fresh parsley for garnish Instructions: 1. Prepare the Beans: - Rinse the dried red kidney beans under cold water and pick out any debris. - Soak the beans overnight in water or use the quick soak method by bringing them to a boil for 2 minutes, then letting them sit for 1 hour. 2. Sear the Sausage: - In a large pot or Dutch oven, brown the sliced Andouille sausage over medium heat until it releases its flavorful fat. 3. Sauté Vegetables: - Add chopped onion, bell pepper, celery, and minced garlic to the pot. Sauté until the vegetables are softened. 4. Add Beans and Spices: - Drain the soaked beans and add them to the pot. - Add bay leaves, dried thyme, dried oregano, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Stir well. 5. Pour in Liquid: - Pour in the chicken broth and water, ensuring that the liquid covers the beans by at least an inch. 6. Simmer: - Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 2 to 2.5 hours, or until the beans are tender. Stir occasionally. 7. Mash Some Beans: - To thicken the mixture, use the back of a spoon to mash some of the beans against the side of the pot. 8. Adjust Seasoning: - Taste and adjust the seasoning. Add more salt, pepper, or cayenne if needed. 9. Serve: - Serve the red beans over a bed of cooked white rice. - Garnish with chopped green onions and fresh parsley. 10. Enjoy: - Enjoy the rich and comforting flavors of Red Beans and Rice! This dish often gets better the next day as the flavors continue to meld. Read the full article

"Attack of Big MACC"
Tumblr media
Season 3, Episode 12
First US Airdate: November 3, 1989 First BBC UK broadcast: June 19, 1990
A robot from the future arrives in present-day New York and gets caught in the middle of the Foot Clan / Turtles conflict.
We’re a quarter of the way through season three of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. “Attack of Big MACC” (sometimes referred to as “Attack of the Big MACC”) is the second episode of the series from Francis Moss, who made his TMNT debut with “The Fifth Turtle”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leonardo, Raphael and Michaelangelo are watching an Ace Duck marathon on TV when Donatello switches the channel. This is the only time Ace ever appears in the 1987 TMNT show; his action figure bio suggests he was supposed to be some guy the Turtles hired to pilot their blimp. We can only assume the producers of the show realised this was redundant given that the Turtles used the blimp on their own all the time, and so it seems in the animated continuity he’s just some guy who stars in movies instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On TV, April is reporting from a military testing facility where a new “super laser” is being showcased. The Turtles struggle to watch the broadcast as stormy weather causes interference with the broadcast. Later, a bolt of lightning causes a power surge, and as a result the tank-mounted laser goes haywire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A futuristic, sentient robot emerges from a portal. Military officers open fire upon it, but the robot easily disarms them. The Turtles, thinking what we’re all thinking, immediately realise Shredder is going to attempt to obtain the bot.
Tumblr media
Cut to Krang literally saying “I want that robot!” Watching the same report, Krang identifies the robot’s weak spot as its neck, and produces a “Docilator”, an iPod-sized device that Shredder will be able to use to gain control of it.
“Imagine,” says Krang, “An entire army of invincible robots from another dimension all eager to serve me!” I mean he already has an army of robots eager to serve him who I assume were at least partially built using Dimension X technology. The only difference between the Foot Soldiers and this new guy is that the Turtles can tear through them with relative ease.
Watching this episode, I immediately remarked that it’s a little convenient that Krang just happened to have a gadget on his person that was perfect for the Scheme of the Week, and not for the first time either. At that exact moment, the following exchange took place in the show:
SHREDDER: This is something you just happened to have lying around, right?
KRANG: We’ve got to keep the story moving!
This is where we’re at part-way through the third season. We’ve done all of this so many times that THE SHOW IS BECOMING SELF-AWARE.
Tumblr media
Back at the military lab the robot, talking like a cowboy, grabs April. “I’m-a rescuin’ you from the Comanches.” Watching this on the TV, the Turtles leap into action. They arrive on the scene of the now vacant facility. (I feel like I’m always questioning timescales nowadays, but how long did it take them to get there? Has April just been struggling for like 45 minutes?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Turtles confront the robot, who identifies them as “hostile earthlings” and opens fire. After he captures Donatello and Raphael, Michaelangelo makes a peace gesture, convincing the visitor to cease fire.
The robot reveals his name is MACC (“Mobile Armored Computerized Combatant”), from “sector four, level eight”. MACC is from 2390 AD. April remarks that “he’s from 400 years in the future!”, suggesting that there was a little bit of wiggle-room put in place here in case this episode didn’t get broadcast until 1990: far-off years mentioned in this incarnation of TMNT conveniently always end up being a nice round number that lines up with the current broadcast date.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
MACC explains that he speaks in cowboy lingo as there’s nothing to do on long inter-dimensional trips but watch old westerns. In classic Looney Tunes fashion, Bebop and Rocksteady saw a hole in the floor, causing MACC to fall through it. Shredder places the Docilator on MACC as we reach the end of the first act.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As part two begins, we see that MACC is unaffected by the Docilator and opens fire on Shredder. After the bad guys escape in their transport module, MACC explains to the Turtles and April that despite being programmed for violence, he’s a pacifist and considered a “factory reject”. April is keen to conduct an interview with “MACC, the robot warrior from the future!” which strikes me as being an easy way to draw more unwanted attention to the guy, but I guess given that the military are already out to get him and he’s been on TV, the cat’s out of the bag.
Tumblr media
In the Technodrome, Krang and Shredder argue about who was to blame for their last scheme failing. Krang provides Shredder with a “new, improved Docilator” and Shredder vows that he’ll definitely capture MACC this time.
Tumblr media
After April gets her interview, MACC encounters a video camera and tries to have a conversation with it. “Number Five! What brings you here?” Everything about MACC is just an unabashed, shameless rip-off of Number Five from the movie Short Circuit, and at this point it’s obvious that a decision has been made to lean into it.
Tumblr media
MACC is rolling down the street with the Turtles in his arms(?!) when he announces he needs to visit a “databank repository”. That’s another way of saying he NEEDS INPUT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a public library, MACC powers through books with blinding speed. Stop me if you’ve seen this somewhere before. A guard confronts him. MACC explains that he’s “Inputting data, and having a wonderful time doing it”. The guard responds with “I’ll input you!” MACC disarms him by... zapping his belt so that his trousers fall down, revealing his boxer shorts with hearts - an old TMNT stand-by.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Turtles and MACC flee the library. Later, in the lair, the robot is introduced to Splinter. After he accidentally fries the Turtles’ TV, Donatello determines his circuits are “deteriorating rapidly”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MACC overhears Donatello explaining that eventually, he’ll blow up. In order to protect his new friends, he leaves the lair, but is immediately abducted by a pair of Foot Soldiers. Shredder pops up and places the new Docilator on the robot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Having achieved his goal, Shredder orders Bebop and Rocksteady to head to the surface and wait for him. When Rocksteady points out Krang ordered that they immediately return to the Technodrome, Shredder explains that he intends to “amuse himself for a while” first. Soon after, the Turtles realise MACC has vanished and set out to find him before he explodes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At Channel 6, Burne praises April’s interview when Vernon runs in. He explains MACC has been spotted attacking a police station. April rushes off, ostensibly to report on the story, but really to alert the Turtles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The site of the police station looks like a war zone as MACC continues to open fire. As act two ends, the Turtles arrive on the scene to see MACC on a destructive rampage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Act three begins with the now-reprogrammed MACC, under orders from Shredder, opening fire upon the Turtle van (the Turtles jump out but it’s not clear how much damage the van sustained). April arrives on a news cycle and MACC immediately destroys her camera. I feel like April’s camera being rendered unusable should also be a spot on the TMNT trope bingo card at this point.
Tumblr media
Just to raise the stakes a bit, Donatello explains that the Docilator is accelerating the process of MACC disintegrating. “There’s enough destructive force in MACC to level this entire city!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Shredder and his mutants are evading the Turtles, but not from their usual abandoned warehouse; they’re residing in a luxury suite. “And just how are you paying for all this?” asks Krang. “I borrowed your Alien Express card,” responds Shredder. “I never leave the Technodrome without it.” This is quickly becoming one of the goofier episodes of the season.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Turtles walk through the ruined city and see a malfunctioning ATM freely dispensing money to onlookers. Donatello theorises that MACC may have left them a trail to follow. They end up at a hotel that’s crackling with electricity, which turns out to be Shredder’s hideout.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The distraught manager talks to the Turtles in the now totalled hotel suite. (“That’s the last time I rent a room to a bunch of batchelors!”) They ask him where the villains went, and he points out a trail of footprints burned into the floor.
Tumblr media
Arriving in the basement, the Turtles see Shredder and his mutants escaping in their transport module. The Turtles try to follow in a second module but a group of Foot Soldiers open fire on them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Michaelangelo dispenses with the Foot Soldiers by kicking a pile of luggage containers on top of them. In a fun sequence, The Turtles try to pilot the transport module. “How hard can it be [to drive]?” remarks Donatello. “Bebop and Rocksteady do it all the time.” The module then veers out of control, suggesting maybe the Turtles don’t give their mutant rivals the credit they deserve.
Tumblr media
In the Technodrome, Krang orders MACC to summon an army of robots through a time portal when it opens. “Soon I will have an army of eager robots at my command” -- again, he already does. I feel like it would be easier for Krang to just deactivate MACC and reverse-engineer the tech for new Foot Soldiers, but fine. Let’s continue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Krang realises the Turtles are incoming via transport module. When they arrive, Bebop, Rocksteady and waves of both Foot and Rock Soldiers are waiting for them. The now-chained Turtles are marched through the Technodrome before Krang explains his plan to them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a lucky break for our heroes, the Docilator just happens to slip off the neck of MACC, freeing him from Krang’s control. He zaps the chains on the Turtles, allowing them to break free.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
MACC blows a hole in the floor of the Technodrome, causing Shredder, Bebop and Rocksteady to fall in. He fires upon the feet of Krang’s robot body, leaving him stuck on the spot, and KILLS three Rock Soldiers(!) I thought this guy was supposed to abhor violence, and we’ve never seen any suggestion that the Rock Soldiers aren’t fully sentient individuals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The time portal opens, but MACC is reluctant to leave. Michaelangelo stresses the importance of him returning to his own time: “If you don’t go, you’re gonna blow!” Ultimately Donatello convinces him to go, reasoning that he could be a warrior for peace in his own era. The Turtles leave the burning ruins of the Technodrome and head back to the surface in a reversing transport module as Krang sobs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back in the lair, the Turtles and Splinter exchange thoughts on MACC until the room is filled with smoke from a pizza burning in the oven. “Who needs MACC to cause damage? We’ve got Michaelangelo”.
I think it goes without saying that “Attack of Big MACC” owes more than a little to the Short Circuit movies, to the point where it goes beyond just being a loving homage (like “New York’s Shiniest” could be considered for Robocop) and treads into potential lawsuit territory. It’s also very self-indulgent in terms of the little winks and nods to how repetitive the show is becoming. Things like this bugged me as a kid, but right now I’m so deep in the weeds with this rewatch that I appreciate knowing the writers are just as burned out retelling the same story of Shredder and Krang trying to revive the Technodrome as the rest of us are sitting through it.
One trope we hadn’t seen in this version of TMNT until now is time travel. Donatello will mess with the timeframe in a different manner next season in the aptly-titled “Donatello Makes Time”; later, during the “Vacation in Europe” side-season, a time shift threatens to throw the world into a black hole in “Shredder’s New Sword”. Further down the road, season five’s “Once Upon a Time Machine” will be a more conventional time travel episode that sees the present-day Turtles team-up with their future counterparts from 2036.
NEXT TIME: Shredder and Splinter do the Limbo Rock in “The Ninja Sword of Nowhere”!

Everything You Should Know About Anarchism
Writer Kim Kelly is an anarchist based in New York City and an organizer with the Metropolitan Anarchist Coordinating Council (MACC).
In a pop-cultural sense, at least, the idea of anarchy has been characterized by either a middle-fingers-up, no-parents-no-rules punk attitude, or a panicky, more conservative outlook used by national and state sources to represent violent chaos and disorder. Today, we can see an extremely serious, radical leftist political philosophy on T-shirts at Hot Topic.
So what is anarchism? What do those people raising black flags and circling A’sreally want? Here’s what you need to know:
What is anarchism?
Anarchism is a radical, revolutionary leftist political philosophy that advocates for the abolition of government, hierarchy, and all other unequal systems of power. It seeks to replace what its proponents view as inherently oppressive institutions — like a capitalist society or the prison industrial complex — with nonhierarchical, horizontal structures powered by voluntary associations between people. Anarchists organize around a key set of principles, including horizontalism, mutual aid, autonomy, solidarity, direct action, and direct democracy, a form of democracy in which the people make decisions themselves via consensus (as opposed to representative democracy, of which the United States government is an example).
“I would define anarchism as the nonhierarchical, nonelectoral, direct-action-oriented form of revolutionary socialism,” Mark Bray, a lecturer at Dartmouth College and author of Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook, tells Teen Vogue.
As the New York City-based anarchist group Metropolitan Anarchist Coordinating Council (MACC), of which I’m a member, writes on its website it, “We demonstrate a vision for a society in fundamental opposition to the brutal logic of contemporary capitalism — a society based on mutual aid, cooperation, and radical democracy.”
Where did anarchism come from?
Anarchism has ancient roots, with the word itself stemming from the ancient Greek anarchos, or "without rulers," but it fully bloomed as a political philosophy in Europe and the United States during the 19th century. At the time, Communist thinker Karl Marx’s writings had become popular, and people were searching for alternatives to the capitalist system. The Paris Commune — a brief period in 1871 when Paris was controlled by anarchists and communists — helped spread the message of anarchism further, and inspired more young radicals to take up the cause, sometimes to violent effect when they embraced the philosophy of “propaganda by the deed.” By the early 20th century, anarchism had spread throughout the world, but government repression often made it difficult for anarchists to organize and achieve their goals.
Pierre-Joseph Proudhon is generally recognized as the first self-proclaimed anarchist, and his theories continue to influence anarchist thought today — if you’ve ever heard the phrase “property is theft,” that’s straight from Proudhon’s 1840 book What Is Property? But Proudhon was far from the only prominent thinker to advance the cause of anarchy. William Godwin’s 1793 treatise, An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, is hailed as a classic of antistate, proto-anarchist thought. Other famous contributors to anarchism’s development include Peter Kropotkin, Mikhail Bakunin, Emma Goldman, Lucy Parsons, Voltairine De Cleyre, Max Stirner, Johann Most, Buenaventura Durruti, and Alexander Berkman. In addition to these names, countless others, whose identities have been lost to history, have helped refine and spread the ideology of anarchism. Today, anarchism is a fully global, intersectional philosophy, with particularly strong roots in Latin America, Spain, Germany, and, as of 2012, the Middle East, due to the 2012 Rojava Revolution in occupied Kurdistan.

Does It Even Matter How We Treat Others? The 26th Sunday of Ordinary Time (September 29th)
Does it matter how we treat others? What does my neighbor’s suffering have to do with me? Can I continue living in comfort while bypassing those around me who are in misery? These are questions that the Readings for this Sunday raise, and to which they provide uncomfortable answers. Let’s read and let the Holy Spirit move us outside our comfort zone.
1. The First Reading is Am 6:1a, 4-7:
Thus says the LORD the God of hosts: Woe to the complacent in Zion! Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches, they eat lambs taken from the flock, and calves from the stall! Improvising to the music of the harp, like David, they devise their own accompaniment. They drink wine from bowls and anoint themselves with the best oils; yet they are not made ill by the collapse of Joseph! Therefore, now they shall be the first to go into exile, and their wanton revelry shall be done away with.
Amos is one of the oldest of the literary (writing) prophets. A Judean (from the southern kingdom) who was sent to northern Israel, he is best remembered for his strident denunciations of the social injustices of his day.
In today’s passage, Isaiah rebukes the aristocracy of Jerusalem, the wealthy elite, who led lives of comfort and leisure in the capital city of the southern kingdom but were “not made ill by the collapse of Joseph,” that is, cared nothing for the fact that their fellow Israelites to the north (Joseph=the northern kingdom) were being decimated, impoverished, and killed by repeated incursions of enemy armies. The fact that ten of the twelve tribes of the LORD were being faced with exile and extinction did not make an impression on these wealthy southerners. As a result, Amos prophecies that they will share the same fate as their northern cousins: “They shall be the first to go into exile!” So it came to be: when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon later invaded Judea on multiple occasions, he exiled the Judean people, starting with the wealthiest.
2. The Responsorial Psalm is Ps 146:7, 8-9, 9-10:
R. (1b) Praise the Lord, my soul!
Blessed he who keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets captives free. R. Praise the Lord, my soul!
The LORD gives sight to the blind. The LORD raises up those who were bowed down; the LORD loves the just. The LORD protects strangers. R. Praise the Lord, my soul!
The fatherless and the widow he sustains, but the way of the wicked he thwarts. The LORD shall reign forever; your God, O Zion, through all generations. Alleluia. R. Praise the Lord, my soul!
Psalm 146 is the first of five “Alleluia” psalms that end the psalter. Each begins with the Hebrew word “Hallelu-Yah” a second-masculine-plural imperative meaning “Praise the LORD!” This set of five psalms is repeated tympanny beats and trumpet fanfares at the end of a great symphony. They close out the psalter on a raucous chorus of praise.
This Psalm stresses the character of the LORD, the God of Israel: He is on the side of the poor, the downtrodden, those who are weak, vulnerable and innocent. This is the character of the God we worship.
Not everyone believes God is like this. Other religions and other persons worship a god of power, a god who “helps those who help themselves, a god who looks out for his own interests and expects you to do the same.
The ancient Israelite Psalmist was making a daring statement by saying the creator had particular concern for the weak. We can see strong lines of continuity between this psalm and the ministry of Jesus, especially Jesus teachings in the Sermon on the Mount, summarized by the Beatitudes. Notice how in this psalm the “LORD reigning forever,” i.e. the kingdom of God, is linked to the comforting of the downtrodden, just as in the Beatitudes.
3. The Second Reading is 1 Tm 6:11-16:
But you, man of God, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses. I charge you before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who gave testimony under Pontius Pilate for the noble confession, to keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ that the blessed and only ruler will make manifest at the proper time, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, and whom no human being has seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal power. Amen.
The Second Reading proceeds on its way semi-continuously through Paul’s letters to individuals. Here we reach the conclusion of St. Paul’s first letter to Timothy, and we here his concluding charge to his young protégé.
Although this Reading was not chosen for thematic agreement with the Gospel, nonetheless we see a commonality in theme. St. Paul links virtues of compassion with the kingdom of God. He exhorts Timothy to practice “righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.” These virtues, especially “love, patience, and gentleness,” forbid us to be callous toward those in need, harsh with the downtrodden, brusque with the uneducated. The practice of these virtues, St. Paul insists, is linked to one day beholding “our Lord Jesus Christ, that blessed and only ruler … the King of Kings and Lord of lords.” Yes, Jesus Christ is omnipotent and eternal God, who cares for the weak, the poor, the shamed, the rejected, the ridiculed, the slow, the feeble. Blessed are those who practice “love patience, and gentleness” toward such.
4. The Gospel is Lk 16:19-31:
Jesus said to the Pharisees: "There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores. When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he cried out, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.' Abraham replied, 'My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours.’ He said, 'Then I beg you, father, send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment.' But Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.' He said, 'Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.' Then Abraham said, 'If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.'"
Several things attract our attention about this Gospel. First of all, we notice that the parable of the “Rich Man and Lazarus” is often employed in debates about purgatory, with some Protestants insisting that it disproves this doctrine, and some Catholics suggesting that it actually supports it.
Jewish views of the afterlife at the time of our Lord held that those who died went to the netherworld (Sheol in classical Hebrew or Hades in Greek) where they awaited the Day of Judgment. Within the netherworld there were places of comfort as well as places of pain. The “bosom of Abraham” was the best part of the netherworld, a pleasant land where the righteous enjoyed the consolation of their ancestors, particularly Abraham himself. The “bosom of Abraham” was separated from the rest of the netherworld, where others received punishments appropriate to their sins, by rivers or chasms.
In this parable, then, both the rich man and Lazarus are awaiting the final judgment, and neither is in heaven nor in hell. They are in Sheol, the place of the dead. It is to this Sheol or Hades that Christ descended to usher the righteous into the presence of God, i.e. heaven.
Does the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus have bearing on the doctrine of purgatory? It does indirectly. Jewish faith held that it was possible to intercede for those in the netherworld awaiting judgment (2 Macc 12:44-45; Apocalypse of Zephaniah 11:1-2). In fact, in some Jewish writings of the period, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob intercede for the dead awaiting judgment. So we can say that the Christian doctrine of purgatory—a place or state of purification of those in the intermediate state—is rooted in ancient Jewish faith. The Rich Man of the parable is in a state similar to purgatory — he is experiencing suffering, but he has not been condemned to hell and is still able to communicate with the righteous (which would not be possible in hell).
Let’s turn to the moral meaning of the passage. The Rich Man is receiving punishment in the afterlife because of his sins, and the parable implies that his primary sin was his utter disregard for the welfare of a fellow Israelite, Lazarus, who begged at the door of his house in utter squalor, lacking even basic necessities. In this attitude he parallels the wealthy elite of Jerusalem from the First Reading, who were not in the least distressed by the decimation of their cousins to the north. Jesus is condemning the callousness of those who live lives of self-indulgence while ignoring the needs of the poor, especially the poor of their own community, or their own community of faith.
The conclusion of the dialogue between Abraham and the Rich Man is interesting. The Rich Man pleads with Abraham to send someone to warn his brothers, but Abraham responds, “They have Moses and the Prophets. If they will not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.”
“Moses and the Prophets” is a reference to the sum total of Scripture, often referred to as the “Law and the Prophets.” Both Moses and the prophets (like Amos above!) stressed the importance of practicing economic justice and charity toward the widow, the orphan, the stranger, and the poor kinsman (see Deut 15, Lev 25). Those that did not heed God’s prophets had hard hearts, and even a resurrection would not persuade them, because their impediment to repentance was not some rational objection to the existence or power of God, but an attachment to riches.
Jesus words were prophetic. As it turns out, the wealthy of Jerusalem are not persuaded by the resurrection of Lazarus (!), just as they were not moved to repentance by the Scriptures. John records the aftermath of the resurrection of Lazarus:
John 11: 46 but some of [the Judeans] went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council, and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48 If we let him go on thus, every one will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy both our holy place and our nation.” …. 53 So from that day on they took counsel how to put him to death.
We also note how Jesus ties his own ministry as one who “rises from the dead” with belief in the testimony of “Moses and the Prophets.” In doing so, Jesus rules out any form of Christianity which tries to reject the Old Testament, the Scriptures of Israel (i.e. Marcionism). On a personal note, this was the text that persuaded me to become an Old Testament scholar, since Jesus ties belief in the resurrection (i.e. Christian faith) to confidence in the prophets of Israel (i.e. the Old Testament).
Sometimes we are tempted to think, “If only God would pour out manifestations of His power, then evangelism would be easier. We would convert the nation.” But Jesus teaches us to think more realistically about miracles. After three years of the most remarkable miracle ministry in the history of the human race, Jesus still found himself abandoned by even his closest followers at the time of his greatest need. Even after his resurrection, the officials to whom that miracle were reported paid the guards to suppress the news (Matt 28:11-15)!
Miracles gather crowds, but they only occasionally lead to the conversion of heart that Jesus seeks. Those that are hardened by greed, lust, or other passions can always find a way to explain a miracle away, and even if they can’t, they will simply ignore it or regard it as an inexplicable fluke. There have been public miracles in modern times witnessed by thousands (like the apparitions in Zeitoun, Egypt) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMEWxRB-1dc but haven’t led to mass conversion.
So what do the Readings say to us this Lord’s Day? Firstly, to repent of any self-indulgence in our own lifestyle, and any lack of generosity toward the poor, especially those closest to us. Secondly, to start paying heed to the Scriptures today by turning to God in conversion, rather than waiting for some sign, some apparition, some “act of God” to wake us up.

John Cunnane is a practitioner of drumfunk, a drum & bass subgenre that focuses on virtuosic breakbeat chopping and a jazzy sense of rhythm and improvisation. Where breakcore goes for the jugular, drumfunk hangs back, delighting in repetition and strange patterns, and sometimes hinting at the percussive side of late '90s IDM. (As one half of Macc & dgoHn, Cunnane made the album Some Shit Saaink, a minor classic released on Rephlex, the label started by Aphex Twin and Grant Wilson-Claridge.) Alongside more prominent drumfunk producers like Paradox, who is largely credited with inventing the genre, Cunnane represents an experimental end of the scene now centered on Colchester's Love Love Records and the often-overlooked Irish label Subtle Audio, the two imprints where he's released most of his recent EPs. dgoHn's music might be mostly drums, but he squeezes plenty of variety out of them. His approach is more colourful than many of his peers: at one moment he's making futuristic breakcore-influenced music, and at another he's making something resembling early jungle or even acid jazz. This vibrant spread of sounds is on display on his RA podcast, which highlights everything this odd little scene has to offer. There are tracks from lesser-known projects like Kunst (his collaboration with fellow Rephlex head Jodey Kendrick), Rognvald (who released a record on Planet Mu as Burnkane almost a decade ago), drumfunk stalwarts Nic TVG and Greenleaf, as well as some artists from Subtle Audio. It's almost an hour of endlessly creative percussive music that should impress dilettantes and drum & bass acolytes alike. What have you been up to recently? Making music, always making music. I have been working on more tunes for Love Love Records, and a few other bits for other labels. How and where was the mix recorded? At home, on a laptop, using Ableton and a few MIDI controllers. Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix? Not really, it's just a few tunes that I like, and a few of my own, mixed (blended/forced) together in a way that in the end the whole thing (arguably) doesn't sound shit. I don't always get it right, but I'm pretty sure that's the general idea behind any mix I do. Most people refer to your music as "drumfunk"—is this something you identify with? Does this sound or scene still exist in your mind? I suppose I agree with the term "drumfunk" to describe my music, but that's mostly because I honestly don't think that most of my tunes fit in with the whole drum & bass or jungle thing, and having a different genre name helps.... maybe? And given that I focus on the beats a lot, "drumfunk" is probably quite apt, but whether it is correct or not is another thing, and I'm not sure I care all that much. The way you chop up breaks feels both futuristic and old-school. What's your setup like? My setup is basic and cheap, but I like it that way because I'm comfortable with it. There is nothing futuristic or old-school about how I chop up breaks, it's just a DAW and the scissors tool. What are you up to next? More of the same, probably. I might do an album if I can be bothered. There are some collaborations in the works. There is a project I'm working on with Oliver Duckert (Badun), and at some stage there will be more stuff with Jodey Kendrick, and probably (not?) there might be some more Macc & dgoHn music.

Backdoor Government About To Collapse – Crooked Najib and Zahid Threaten To Pull Out Support...
Two of the country’s biggest crooks – Najib Razak and Zahid Hamidi – are tag-team again. After speculations that both were fighting tooth and nail to become the next prime minister, it appears that the former PM and the former Deputy PM have reached a consensus. Regardless who will become the next PM, it’s nightmare to the national coffers – and PM Muhyiddin. “We are ready for GE15. Are you ready to be with us?” – screamed a Facebook post blasted by UMNO president Zahid Hamidi yesterday (June 3). Apparently, the disgraced thief who is facing record 87 charges related to money laundering, corruption and criminal breach of trust (CBT) did not appear to be worried at all, unlike the time when Pakatan Harapan was the government. But Zahid isn’t the only one who has been grinning from ear to ear ever since Muhyiddin Yassin betrayed the voters and his own government by forming a new backdoor government with the corrupt UMNO party. Najib Razak, who is facing corruption and money laundering charges involving RM2.3 billion of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds, is equally overjoyed. Both Najib and Zahid hope to return to the corridors of power as prime minister and deputy prime minister – again. It doesn’t matter who becomes the No.1 or No.2. But based on popularity and intellectual, common sense says Zahid is too dumb to lead the country. It would be quite torturing to hear the Java-immigrant speaks his classical English on the international stage. The fact that Zahid posted his naughty message about UMNO’s readiness for the 15th General Election after a visit by Najib to his home on Tuesday (June 2) night suggests that the 3-month-old Muhyiddin government could come to an abrupt end, potentially making the traitor Muhyiddin the shortest serving prime minister in the history of the country. Unless Muhyiddin is part of Najib and Zahid’s plan for the so-called snap election, the backdoor prime minister is toast. Fighting with Mahathir for the control of Bersatu (PPBM) party, Mr. Muhyiddin is leading a very unstable government with razor-thin support of merely 112 MPs – only 1 majority in the 222-seat Parliament after Sri Gading MP Shahruddin Md Salleh defected to Mahathir’s camp today.
Obviously Muhyiddin’s balls are in the hands of UMNO, the biggest ally in a loosely glued Perikatan Nasional government, a coalition which is not even legally registered. And now Najib and Zahid have warned their puppet – Prime Minister Muhyiddin – that his balls would be squeezed or crushed if he tries to be funny and refuses to do as told. The message from Zahid’s Facebook post was simple – if Najib does not get a favourable result from his current corruption trials, all bets are off. Because Najib’s trial is about to conclude, any sign that he would potentially be sent to jail will similarly apply to Zahid. Hence, both crooks agreed to unite and sent an ultimatum – free Najib or UMNO will pull out of Muhyiddin’s government. Actually, a simple withdrawal of support from only Najib and Zahid, resulting in a loss of 2 votes, is sufficient to see the collapse of Muhyiddin government. The Zahid’s seemingly victorious message was also meant for Mahathir. If the 94-year-old former PM continues his huffing and puffing to blow Muhyiddin’s “straw house” down, Mahathir will get nothing if a snap election is called. That explains why following Zahid’s message, Najib immediately whined, moaned and bitched about a general election, even though it is not a mandatory. Like how Agong (King) was misled to believe that Muhyiddin had the number, which he most likely didn’t have, the king can actually repeat the process of finding a new prime minister – without dissolving the Parliament. But Najib deliberately put words in Agong’s mouth that a snap election must be called in the event that Muhyddin lost his majority. The King will look incredibly foolish and biased – even racist – if he listens to Najib and refuses to appoint a new prime minister (from multiracial Opposition) but had gladly appointed Muhyiddin as the new prime minister of a “Malay-only” Perikatan Nasional government. Najib argued that even if opposition Pakatan Harapan (PH) has enough MPs, the number would be small hence a snap election is necessary. But if the King were to act according to Najib’s advice, the monarch has to explain why Muhyiddin can be appointed as a new PM when he had the support of only 113 MPs, but PH cannot snatch back its government if it also has 113 MPs.
Interestingly, the message – “We are ready for GE15” – suspiciously appeared to suggest the idea of a snap election came from only Zahid and Najib. Would it not be more appropriate to post the message as “UMNO is ready for GE15”? Who is Najib, a party advisor, to decide on behalf of UMNO without any involvement from UMNO Deputy President Mohamad Hasan, who has been silent so far? More importantly, PAS president Hadi Awang was not present in Zahid’s luxury home during the announcement of a potential election. Hadi’s silence, despite his promotion as Special Envoy to the Middle East with ministerial rank, is absolutely breathtaking. The old rivalry for influence among the Malay grassroots at village level seems to have started between UMNO and PAS. Both UMNO and PAS are trying to cover the bad bloods from spilling out on the streets over battle to put their own people as village heads, an important position to influence Malay voters in rural area. Therefore, it’s safe to say that Najib and Zahid are the only two crooks anxious to have a general election in the middle of the current Covid-19 pandemic. Zahid Hamidi and Najib Razak - Solemn Besides, judging by the number of promotions accorded to UMNO warlords and big guns to GLCs (government-linked companies), and even governorship of Malacca (Melaka), the de-facto federal government appears to be UMNO, not Muhyiddin’s party. Yes, Najib and Zahid were in fact extremely desperate when they threatened to pull out, unless given a get out of jail free cards. Najib and Zahid were betting the coward prime minister can be intimidated and cowed to throw away their criminal charges. Both crooks were encouraged by the High Court’s refusal to hear a senior lawyer’s revision application against a Sessions Court’s decision to discharge Najib’s stepson, Riza Aziz, over money laundering involving US$248 million linked to 1MDB funds. Muhyiddin is left with very little choice but to quietly interfere to free Najib Razak. However, freeing Najib does not guarantee that the thief will not pull out of the “temporary” backdoor government anyway. As mentioned, unless Muhyiddin is part of Najib and Zahid’s grand plan to advise the King to dissolve the Parliament, the backdoor prime minister is game over. Get real, unless Muhyiddin is willing to create more than 112 ministries for every single MP in his camp, the defections would continue. His government is as strong as only 72 ministers in his Cabinet. In theory, the remaining 40 MPs who are not currently a minister may switch sides. What the Opposition needs to do is to offer a full ministership to any of the 40 MPs. Mr. Prime Minister Muhyiddin is in deep shit!! - FT

Strike: The Cuckoo’s Calling - Part I
Watching this first episode has really made me think about how complex the Strike books are in terms of how many things are going on under the surface. Much of what makes the books so compelling happens in the character’s hearts and heads - feelings, thoughts, opinions, memories, pieces of half-told backstory that leave you wanting more. It’s hard to find a way to visualize all of that inner action.
The show seems to have chosen - at least so far - the way of subtlety. Despite the opening titles that, as @nickyfranky put it, almost look like a Cormoran/Robin shipper video, in this episode there’s not much dialogue between Cormoran and Robin. But it doesn’t mean that they don’t interact. It’s all in the little gestures, in the facial expressions, in the way they observe and silently “study” each other.
We never hear Cormoran’s hilarious internal monologues about Robin’s engagement ring... but we know from a line of dialogue that he has taken notice of it. We never hear him openly praising Robin for her skills and professionality (maybe only once, right at the end when she impersonates Rochelle), but we can see that he’s impressed from the way he looks at her, and from the way he accepts her help and asks for it. In turn, we can clearly notice that Robin is so much into her new job and wants to do the best she can, even if she never says one word about this. (On a sidenote, in this episode Matt seems kindof a nice guy. Well played, BBC.)
As @moontoblood pointed out, there’s a strong air of melancholy to the whole episode, and something like a classic, almost “retro” vibe.
Robin won me over from the very beginning, with her giddiness over her engagement ring. I really liked the way she was portrayed by Holliday Grainger, she really stood out to me as one of the best things about this episode. I really liked Tom Burke, too. I liked both his walk and his voice, and I think he managed to convey all the different nuances of Strike’s character, this mixture of roughness, brilliance, strength and awkwardness (even if his appearance is still a little bit too neat). John Bristow was perfect, too.
Another thing I loved was London. Setting is so much more than a background in the Cormoran Strike books, and I think the show has captured that very well.
Now some more spoilery thoughts:
HUGE SPOILERS - DON’T READ ON IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE BOOK!
I love what they did with Tony Landry. He’s so charmingly threatening, and I think they’re already setting him up as a red herring for the audience. I mean, the scene at the restaurant is a textbook “procedural show culprit introduction scene”. If I hadn’t read the book, I think I’d have started suspecting him to be Lula’s murderer right away. Bonus: give me more of Robin and Strike listening to Deeby Macc, please. I can’t say whether I’d have liked it so much if I hadn’t read the books first, but for me it was a really promising start.
Bring on tonight’s episode. I can’t wait to meet the other secondary characters.
