the way that dallas has been every casper ruud tournament stereotype on steroids:

a very favorable draw (against a field that, on paper, does not present much of a threat to him)

first round opponent (giron, who was the highest-ranked unseeded opponent casper could have drawn) withdraws at the last minute and casper plays a lucky loser instead

top seeds see themselves out, somehow making his very favorable draw now laughably favorable

gets a QF retirement

guaranteed not to face a single Top 50 player until the final; unless the other finalist is tommy paul, he'll not have faced a single player in the Top 20

all that's left is for him to lose the final anyway even though he should be going in as the heavy favorite

thinking about what it means to be an also-ran. good but not great. i'm taking a wide-angle view here—if you're one of the top ten players in the entire world you are not just good at playing tennis you are great at playing tennis lmao. (whether you are tasting greatness for a fleeting moment or whether you are in fact great on a world-historic scale is a totally separate question.)

so let's take munar. mallorcan clay courter, jr dc champ, jr roland garros finalist, it's obvious why people wanted him to be big lol. he was at the next gen 2018 finals with tsitsipas and rublev and fritz and tiafoe and de minaur and hurkacz. every one of them have made the top 10 at one time or another; meanwhile munar's spent 6 years in the top 100 and never quite cracked the top 50. reached exactly one tour final, a 250, which he lost. but that's still good enough to net almost $5 million in prize money. that's light years away from a journeyman bouncing between the tour and challengers. the top is still closer than the bottom, or so it must feel like.

i came across this pdb interview with martinez & munar from 2017, where they're being hailed as the future of spanish tennis. if you look at where they are now, i don't think you can call it flopping, per se, but it's not… exactly… succeeding??? when you're making those kind of predictions you just can't account for phenomena like carlos alcaraz. that's the equivalent of a meteor strike. and yet.

glancing at the time capsule that is socials from the mid-2010s: it's all the best kids in their age bracket in spain, and on one hand there's baby paula badosa all over the place and on the other hand there's the third guy on their junior davis cup team who never broke out of the challenger circuit and vanished without a trace. when you put it like that maybe top 100 isn't anything to sneeze at, you know?
