it’s weird watching simon’s social life, when he’s not having to hide you under his wing like the protective big brother he is. he’s still stoney faced but… he seems a lot more boisterous and talkative, that’s for sure. he seems to take football with the lads pretty seriously, talking strats with his team before the next kickoff. a couple of them shoot glances at each other behind his back, finding humour in how into the game he is.

and then there’s johnny, talking absolute shite on the pitch, unable to stop waffling between his powerful lunges towards the pitch. he’s halfway through a rant about his recent grade in religious studies when he completely misses the goal. the majority of his team are groaning, meanwhile he’s still pensive and wound up about his grades. how has he managed to get a D in religious studies, he’s a catholic for fucks sake!

besides, you know that football isn’t really johnny’s thing. he’s more of a rugby lad, which simon likes to tease him about.

Good afternoon Year 1, 

Today was such a fun day! The weather was beautiful and I got to play in the muga on the North Site. It was HUGE! We played football and I got to be in goal... I wasn’t very god at stopping the ball though! Ooooops! See if you can play a game of football outside too!

To add to the PE is a nightmare horror stories (because whenever anyone mentions it I can still smell my school’s MUGA):

One time we did the bleep test and I was so exhausted that I dropped out pretty early and then I got grouped in with the kids who ‘just didn’t try hard enough’ and had to do the whole thing again and I could barely move when I got home

They didn’t actually bother to teach us how to play a lot of sports, because they assumed we knew how to play already – I remember getting screamed at by the hyper competitive kids in the class whilst playing cricket and rounders because I genuinely just had no idea how to play

I might be remembering this wrong, but I’m pretty sure one time when we had to run a mile a girl said that she felt sick and the teachers just ignored her and made her do it anyway and surprise surprise she threw up

Whenever we played football this one bully used stand in front of me and conveniently always needed to flick the mud off her football boots and as far as I remember the teachers believed her?

The classes were all split up by gender and lot of the sports we did got divided into ‘girls’ and ‘boys’ sports so as far as I remember whilst the boys got to play basketball we had to freeze outside playing Netball

And to top it all off, I was terrible at sports and I always used to get a really low grade for effort, because they just assumed I wasn’t trying hard enough

And even when we got to GCSEs we couldn’t escape because they made everyone do BTEC Sport, even though a lot (I think most?) of BTEC sport was writing so we didn’t even keep fit doing it

the older i get the weirder it is that not a single p.e. teacher in my entire school career was able to recognize the difference between “a child who doesn’t get enough exercise” and “a child with serious health problems impeding their ability to exercise in this particular way”
