Maria Skłodowska-Curie. That's it, that's the post.
As per my poll, here's a post on MSC!
This post began as a bit of a messy thing. I wanted to write about MSC because she was a brilliant Polish woman who became one of the most important scientists of modern chemistry and physics and I, as a Polish woman and a science major, admire her greatly. But the whole thing was vague and lacked direction. I received some kindly advice though and decided to focus on this: what was Maria like? Everybody knows she had an exceptional mind, that she had close ties with Paris, that she discovered radium and polonium, that she received the Nobel prize twice… But did you know she was said to have “serious, gray eyes” or that her initial plan was to spend her life working as a teacher or that she loved her homeland deeply? Underneath her doubtlessly exceptional achievements she was a person, and I’d love to take a look at that.
Maria Skłodowska ("skwo-DOV-ska") was born on 7 November 1867 in Warsaw under Russian occupation. Her father was a mathematics and physics teacher, so it may seem natural that little Maria took an interest in science, but as a child she was a phenomenal student in general, no matter the subject; she read a lot of books, and she learnt to read very early. She was considered very gifted.
Her family wasn’t rich by any means. Maria’s father – a Polish man, a school teacher under the tzar’s merciless reign – knew very well he couldn’t afford to give all his children the education he wanted for them, not to mention neither Maria nor her older sister Bronia were allowed to attend university in occupied Poland. Making their dreams come true – studying at the Sorbonne – depended on the money they didn’t have.
At 17 Maria made a decision: she was going to work as a teacher while Bronia pursued medicine in Paris with the help of the money earned by Maria. After Bronia’s graduation they would switch: Bronia was going to work as a doctor while Maria attended university.
It was by no means an easy task. During the following years Maria had to withstand not only immensely hard work and a longing for learning, but also unfair employers, lack of respect, and heartbreak. But she persisted. She was 24 when finally she was able to pack up and take the train to Paris.

[source]
Soon after taking up her studies at the Sorbonne did Maria realize how far behind the other students she was: they were able to pursue an official education in a free country, something she’d never gotten to experience before. She had been an excellent student back in Poland, a fluent French speaker, but now it turned out her knowledge was lacking. Obviously, this couldn’t discourage her. Bronia’s husband Kazimierz wrote in a letter to her father that Maria would spend entire days at her university, only coming home in the evening. She worked admirably hard to catch up. And she was happy: at long last she could study science and mathematics in depth, the way she had longed to do for so many years.
Of course, money never stopped being an issue. Even with her father’s and sister’s help, she was still poor. She definitely wasn’t eating enough. In winter, she was cold. Other than that, she mostly gave up on her colleagues, refused to waste her time on “insignificant” things: that is, everything but studying, unfolding the secrets of chemistry and physics, practicing her laboratory skills. She was living and breathing science.

[left / right]
Pierre Curie was older, an exceptional physicist, charming and calm, still unmarried at 35 – he wouldn’t love a woman who couldn’t be first and foremost his intellectual partner. But Maria wasn’t looking for love and she certainly wasn’t looking for a marriage. She had a degree in physics, was on her way to get a degree in mathematics as well, all the while working on the magnetism of steel. And indeed, when they met through a professor who thought Pierre might be of help to young Maria, it was mostly curiosity, mutual respect, and primarily a great scientific interest that bloomed between them and brought them closer together.
Maria didn’t give in easily. All along her plan had been to earn her degrees and return to Warsaw, to her elderly father, and remain working as a teacher for the rest of her life. But there’s no doubt that when she eventually agreed to marry Pierre, it was out of genuine, deep love. They had a sincere, precious connection, both emotional and intellectual.
Did you know Maria and Pierre loved to travel the countryside on their bikes? They did. It’s how they spent most of their time together after their wedding. And not for a moment did they forget about their shared passion for science – they discussed it even during their travels. They lived together and they worked together. Their first child Irène – future Nobel prize winner as well! – was born in September 1897, Ève – their younger daughter – seven years later.
Pierre’s family adored Maria, Maria’s family loved Pierre. The two of them would frequently visit Pierre’s parents and they continued their biking trips, but other than that their life was utterly devoted to science. I know, it sounds like I’m exaggerating, but it’s true. Along with the fact they always had very little money, work was all they had.
Radium appeared in Maria’s life when she was working on her doctorate. Her laboratory was cold, damp, and badly equipped, but it seems to me Maria’s determination was inexhaustible. She began by studying uranium, but she soon figured out she had to include other elements in her research as well in order to solve the mystery at hand. It was only after a year of this work that Maria realized she might have discovered an element previously unknown.
Pierre was interested in Maria’s research before, but – save from the occasional advice as an older and more experienced scientist – he mostly left her to do her own thing while he focused on his crystals. At this point however, he was so intrigued he abandoned his research to work with Maria on her project. In 1898 (two years into Maria’s PhD work!) they published a paper together – in it they announced the discovery of a new element: polonium, named after Maria’s beloved homeland. Later that year, they did the same for radium. They coined the term “radioactivity”.
Maria kept a meticulous journal, not only for her laboratory work. She was carefully tracking their spending as well as Irène’s development, the way she learnt to walk and speak and play with their cat.
And so, her life continued: filthy, hard work in the infamous shed, a ton of an ore for less than a gram of product (!), countless papers published with her dearest husband, watching their daughter grow, earning her doctorate degree; then, in 1903, her first Nobel prize (along with her husband and Henri Becquerel).
The Nobel prize brought Maria and Pierre fame – and it was a tragedy. For them, at least. Modest and humble as they were, they couldn’t stand the journalists almost storming their garden, going as far as “describing [their] black and white cat [in the newspapers]” as Pierre said in a letter to a friend. I allowed myself to translate a piece of a letter that Maria sent to her brother in 1904 amid the post-Nobel craze, as it’s both sad and hilarious:
“I wish you health [for your name-day], well-being for all of your family, and for you never to experience the sort of correspondence and assault that we are now subjected to. Ever since that accursed Nobel prize we’ve been unable to do anything, and I’m beginning to ask myself if the money we received will be of any consolation, as, after all, the people who sell me meat, coal, sugar, etc. are richer than me yet they do not experience such sorrows. […] and yesterday some American wrote to me, asking for permission to name a race horse after me.”
Maria’s life took a truly sharp turn when Pierre died in an accident in 1906. Despite the tragedy that irreparably crushed her heart, she never ceased her work. She became a professor, organized classes for her and her friends’ kids, ran the Radium Institute, continued her research, received her second Nobel prize. During World War I it was her mobile X-ray machines that saved countless lives: she was active and involved, operating the machines with her older daughter and teaching others how to do it.

[left / right]
She lived long enough to see her dear, beloved Poland become an independent country once more. To the very end she remained humble and uninterested in fame, hardworking and dedicated entirely to science.
I based this post mostly on Madame Curie by her daughter Ève which I highly recommend!
#in the end i kept it long as you can see#but i think its consistent :)#mine#op#chemistry#chemblr#physics

Friday
23:45
remember how I mentioned I need to visit amma and acha soon and help them clear out for their marriage anniversary? I did go there and there's so much of everything here. clothes, utensils not in use anymore, paintings long forgotten, books from another time (I'm pretty sure the oldest book is 20 years old here oh my), dust (yes I'm sneezing pretty badly as I write this, thank god no blood this time) and old tech (u know how much I love them).
I wonder how acha didn't bother to clean this place up since he's such a clean freak. maybe it's because he's getting old. ok this is an existential crisis for another time, we'll go over it later (preferably never.)
so getting back to old tech. u remember the old attic? where i used to live half the time cuz of the interesting stuff there? now there's more interesting stuff cuz no one cleans up this place. anyway in this room there's the iPhone 3g (it's as old as me!!), 2-3 iPads that're so much immersed in dust and what not they're unrecognisable now, some laptops (mostly running windows 11 i reckon), a television (????) and ....wait.
there's this black desktop computer. that's cleaner than other stuff here. well u know how curious I tend to get with all this, right? i turn it on after plugging it in half expecting it to not do anything but it does turn on. interesting, right? i thought so too. this desktop computer runs windows 11 (very old stuff haha) and I get in through the login page. why's there no password???? who was using this last?? was it tanvi?? i'm pretty sure it was. I remember her mentioning she used it for her college applications a while ago.
anyway I get past the login screen and there's nothing on the desktop screen. weird. the taskbar is set to automatically hide so no taskbar in sight, and it's a dark greyish wallpaper..which is a bit unsettling to say, the least.
I decided to explore this pc. oh god I haven't used this thing in YEARS. like the last time i used it was in like 2023 lmao for my 10th boards.
no internet on this device, not surprising. i go into the file explorer next and there's only one text file named 'mishti' and last edited on '19.05.2025'. that's my 18th birthday. how odd. there's nothing else. nothing in the downloads folder, nothing in the 'This PC' tab, just this one file in the documents folder. I open it and this is what it says:
subject name: mishti krishna subject's age when this file is opened: 23 and one month old
subject's education status: just completed MSc integrated in Mathematics and Computing subject's martial status: single, never dated
subject's job: editor of the 'vellichor magazine' since age 19. currently hunting for a stable job with her degree
notes:
subject got diagnosed with diabetes type 2 at the age of 20. lost touch with all of her cousins..subject doesn't remember their names anymore. subject is a great cook even now, as predicted.
oh god. what the fuck. yes that was my first reaction. I immediately checked when was this pc last turned on and it was 20.07.2025 for like 2 hours all youtube videos. after this thing was never turned on. so, my question is, what the fuck is this. this text file predicted (?) my future to a T. yes I was 23 and a month old while opening this file, yes I completed my integrated course like just a week ago, yes I never dated but that's common knowledge even in 2025, yes I'm an editor at said literary club, yes I'm a diabetic, and also a great cook, what the hell. also what cousins???? do I have them???
also what the hell is up with the 'subject' reference????? am i panicking enough. am i not panicking enough. what in the seven worlds of hell.
I just shut the system down after taking a picture of said file and went down and acted normal ofc. have never told anyone this and will never tell anyone about this.
the pc was last used by tanvi when I asked amma and acha....and no one else really bothered with it.
so my question to tanvi is: little sister dear, are u a time traveler?!
if yes, am I ur subject???
what am I getting subjected to???
dear diary,
bye for now.
notes: diary writing. this is how I usually write my diaries so it decided to carry over. also I modified the 90s PC to 10s or 20s PC to better fit my imagination. thanks for reading 🙌🏻

little vent on my girlblog
weight gain, male validation, rough academic trajectory, self evaluation
i've gained about 5kg back, made myself seem desperate to my toxic ex and another guy that came along only wanting one thing, and my final year grades will literally be the decider of my degree classification. it's a vicious cycle, the more i eat the more insecure i get, the more emotional i am the more i eat, the more breakdowns i have the less i study, the more undesirable i feel the more narcissistic losers i attract. i've been down this road enough times to know every pothole and every bump. i don't want it to be the thing that defines me. i got into my university on accident (i got a bad a-level grade, lost all my offers, and randomly applied to a mathematics course at a university i could commute to) but i don't want this phase of my life to define all my achievements so far.
i've been an escapist all my life, barely getting myself through school because i dissociate and daydream compulsively. i got into my current university on clearing and barely passed the second year. i don't say this to be negative, i don't even say it to be self deprecating, i just want to be very real about my circumstances and lay things out so i can read them and understand them better. thankfully, i've had enough healing that i can recognise the relapse, and even when i feel down i know i don't want to pay for the consequences of my inaction at a later date. i'm happy for that. some of it was severe mental illness, but some of it was just the insanity of being a teenager. those parts are gone now, and the marks they left are framed like they're in a museum.
and even if i'm not in a self loving mood right now, i like life enough. i really do. daisies are my favourite flowers and it's that time of year again. i got a walking pad and a standing desk. i have the best view while i study and the movement energises me in the best way possible. i've complained about commuting to london three years straight, but on thursday when i was walking home from uni i turned around and the building i came out of looked beautiful. how silly that i had never noticed it before.
i got an offer to go to cardiff uni and an offer to stay at my alma mater. i desperately want that refresh, to start something new in another town, a cosier town, a greener one, but i'm self aware enough to know my current mentality won't shift just because my environment does. i'm so lucky i get to study in london, i'm so lucky to have that considering how inconsistent my academic results have been. i'm so lucky these exams i'm going to take are an opportunity to turn everything around. nobody will know the story behind the numbers printed on that diploma but me. that's mine. i'm lucky to have privacy, i'm lucky to have the vulnerability to share it when i need to.
i don't know what is going to happen. i have goals, sure, but whether or not i meet them is hard to tell right now. i don't want to relapse again because i'm just tired of it. there comes a point when it's boring to go through that again and again. and honestly? nobody in society can afford to be slacking. it's not fair, what's happening in the world right now, but it's happening, and everybody has to be on top of it. everybody has to be working on themselves, working on their career, working on their community, just for a chance to come out on the other side of this.
i would like to see a 2:1 on my diploma and -3kg when i graduate in july. i think i can do it, i've done it before. it's nerve wracking to even say that on the internet. i suspect i'll delete this post if i fail to succeed, and that's okay, i'm allowed to do that.
an even bigger goal, that i suspect will be harder to pull off, is to stay in school. i'm upset i didn't give my course a chance earlier. mathematics deserved a lot more love from me especially considering how it's changed me. i want to do an msc and maybe a phd after. i'm gonna be realistic, and not beat myself up if i fail to get onto a phd program. my past is harder to make up for in a strongly competitive environment and i want to be able to move on if i have to. maybe i will be better off financially if i just get a job after my msc too, i definitely want to have a place of my own.
i'm getting carried away again though, daydreaming, like i always have. so i've written this and i've put it out there. i don't know what's going to happen and that's okay. i'm gonna cringe at my writing in a few months (maybe even a few minutes if i reread this) and that's also okay. i'm so tired of putting myself under a spotlight and nitpicking every little thing i do. it's probably my most narcissistic trait. i'll probably post some stuff about studying during the next few days and live blog after each of my exams.

You will also learn how to work with large datasets, train models, and understand the logic behind how intelligent systems function. With the right electives and projects, BCA students can gain strong practical knowledge of AI.
Strong Career Opportunities in IT and Beyond
Graduates of BCA can pursue a variety of roles in the tech industry. These include:
Software Developer
Web Developer
Data Analyst
AI and Machine Learning Engineer
Cybersecurity Specialist

After BCA, many students opt for higher studies to deepen their skills. Popular choices include:
MCA (Master of Computer Applications)
MBA in IT or Business Analytics
MSc in Data Science or Artificial Intelligence
Professional certifications in cloud computing, cybersecurity, or AI tools
This helps you specialise in a niche area and makes you more competitive in the job market.
Why Location and College Matter
While BCA is offered across India, choosing the right location and institution is essential. Dehradun, known for its peaceful environment and educational excellence, is home to some of the country’s top universities. Top Career Paths After Completing MSc Data Science Online

Completing an MSc Data Science Online program gives you the skills to work with data. You learn to write simple code. You learn to clean messy data. You learn to build charts that tell a story. You can study at home. You can pause and rewind video lessons.
Many students also read parts of an international relations syllabus to add global context to their data work. This mix of skills makes you ready for many jobs. Let’s look at ten paths you can follow.
1. Data Analyst
As a Data Analyst, you turn raw numbers into clear tables and charts. Your code runs in Python or R. You use your training in mathematics in computer science to test patterns in data. You help teams see trends. You work in shops, hospitals, or labs like the Department of Biosciences. You can start this role right after your MSc Data Science Online program ends. You use simple tools like Excel and SQL. You explain your findings in easy words so all can understand.
2. Machine Learning Engineer
A Machine Learning Engineer writes programs that learn from data. You build models that sort images or predict stock prices. You draw on your mathematics in computer science background to tune these models. You use libraries like TensorFlow and Scikit‑learn. You test your programs with real data. You learn this during your MSc Data Science Online study. You can then join tech teams that build smart apps. This path is ideal if you like both coding and math.
3. Business Intelligence Analyst
A Business Intelligence Analyst makes reports and dashboards. You use tools like Tableau or Power BI. You look at data and find stories. You read parts of an international relations syllabus to understand global markets. You help companies plan in different countries. You can work for banks, media houses, or telecom firms. Your MSc Data Science Online training gives you hands‑on practice. You combine charts and simple slides to share clear insights in meetings.
4. Data Scientist
Data Scientists do deep dives into data. You design experiments and test hypotheses. You build complex machine-learning models. You rely on your knowledge of mathematics in computer science to choose the right algorithms. Many Data Scientists plan to move into a PhD course a year later. A PhD course year helps you lead research and publish papers. Data science work in labs or at big tech firms often mirrors the projects you did during your MSc Data Science Online studies.
5. Data Engineer
A Data Engineer builds the pipelines that move and store data. You write code in Python, Java, or Scala. You design databases and cloud systems. You make sure the data is ready for Analysts and Scientists. You can also add insight from a law university in Delhi experience if you studied data privacy rules. You can help teams handle sensitive data correctly. Before you start work, you may need registration for foreigners if you are an international student working in India.
6. Risk Analyst
A Risk Analyst uses data to spot possible issues. You build simple models that flag odd patterns in finance or operations. You use statistical tests learned during your MSc Data Science Online training. If you study in India and are not an Indian citizen, you must complete foreign registration for foreigners through the FRRO online portal. You manage these steps while you learn. This role helps you keep companies safe and guides big decisions.
7. Academic or Lecturer
Some graduates choose to teach. You can teach data science basics at colleges or private institutes. You prepare lessons on Python, SQL, and data visualisation. You might explain how data links to an international relations syllabus topic like global trade. You can also guide students planning a PhD course after their master’s.
