Prelude to the One Year War
Tumblr media
The following is a master post of events leading directly to the start of the One Year War, particularly the rapid development of new weapons by the Republic of Zeon.
UC 0074
The EFSF convert their vessels' main armaments from shell-firing cannons to mega particle cannons.
In February, Zeonic complete the MS-04 Prototype Zaku.
December, UC 0074
The first Jupiter Energy Fleet returns to the Republic of Zeon, rendering the nation energy independent from the Earth Federation.
Zimmad submits the design of their EMS-04 Zudah to Zeon’s military.
Zeonic completes the first prototype YMS-05 Zaku, later renumbered MS-05A.
UC 0075
Zeonic’s Zaku and Zimmad’s Zudah are trialled against each other to determine which will be adopted as the Zeon military’s mainline mobile suit. The Zaku underperforms compared to the impressive Zudah, but the Zudah’s reactor overheats and explodes, destroying the mobile suit. The Zaku is chosen for its reliability and lower production cost.
In May, Zeonic rolls out the MS-05B Zaku 1, Zeon’s first combat-ready mobile suit.
In July, Zeon commissions the Musai-class space cruiser, the first warship in history designed to carry mobile suits.
UC 0076
In March, Zeon commissions the Gwazine-class battleship, a command ship for their highest-ranking officers.
In April, Zeon begins mass-producing the MS-05B Zaku 1 after widely expanding their mobile suit factories.
In May, Colonel Kycilia Zabi creates the Mobile Training Battalion to train mobile suit pilots and establish mobile suit tactics.
In December, Zeon begins development of specialized mobile suit variants, especially for terrestrial and maritime warfare. A high-performance "R-type" Zaku is also proposed.
UC 0077
In April, the Riah Revolution occurs at Side 6. Zeon military backs the nationalist faction, sending a squad of Zakus to blockade the EFF, helping to secure the revolution’s victory. Side 6 declares independence from the Earth Federation as the Riah Republic.
In August, Zeonic rolls out the MS-06A Zaku 2. Its performance is greatly improved over the Zaku 1, but Kycilia Zabi orders it redesigned to be better equipped for melee combat, expecting that the Federation will eventually develop their own mobile suits.
In September, per Kycilia's orders, Zeonic rolls out the MS-06C Zaku 2.
UC 0078
In January, Zeon begins mass-producing the Zaku 2 C-type, replacing the Zaku 1 as its military mainstay.
In February, the EFF's SCV-X project begins construction of SCV-27A, a carrier for the FF-S3 Saberfish fighter.
In March, the EFF commence the RX Project, though the Federation at large dismisses the threat of Zeon's humanoid weapons and remains skeptical about developing their own.
In September, Zeonic rolls out the MS-06F Zaku 2. This version lacks its predecessor's heavy radiation shielding, making it lighter and in turn granting it better performance. The commander-use S-type is later developed, based on the nimble F-type.
In October, as part of Zeon's preparation for a possible Earth invasion, Zeonic rolls out the MS-06J Zaku 2. It is closely based on the F-type, but lacks rocket thrusters to further reduce its weight.
On October 24, the government of Side 3 rechristens itself as the Principality of Zeon and declares independence from the Earth Federation.
In November, the Principality of Zeon begins national mobilization. Supreme Commander Gihren Zabi divides the military into the Space Attack Force, under Vice Admiral Dozle Zabi, and the Mobile Assault Force, under Vice Admiral Kycilia Zabi.
In December, the Principality of Zeon begins the lengthy production of the Dolos-class, a trio of massive warships capable of carrying a staggering 182 mobile suits.

Born on January 1, U.C. 0060 in the Zum City colony in Side 3, part of the Autonomous Republic of Munzo (ARM), Yoruichi was the firstborn of the highly influential Shihōin family, which included several high-ranking engineers in Zeon’s engineering and armaments industry, most especially within the companies ZAS (Zahra Al Saad Thermonuclear Powering Systems, Inc.) and Zeonic. A child of privilege whose education and upbringing were spared no expense, she grew up alongside the slightly older Kūkaku Shiba, whose family was similarly technically inclined and involved. She at several points met a young Casval Rem Deikun, the later Char Aznable.
Both the Shihōin and Shiba families’ statuses would be elevated yet further after the death of the ARM’s founder, Zeon Zum Deikun, in U.C. 0068 and the state being turned into the Principality of Zeon on August 15, U.C. 0069—the de facto military dictatorship benefitted their industries greatly, and members of both were appointed to high-ranking government positions, although the Shiba were always far less comfortable with this arrangement than the Shihōin.
While the state of Kūkaku's right arm precluded her from any kind of military service, she and Yoruichi would complete their educations far ahead of regular schedule based on their respective aptitudes. On this basis, Yoruichi would apply for a dispensation to enter the Zeon Military Academy in U.C. 0074 at the age of only 14. She was already fascinated with mobile suits, knowing of the MS-04 Prototype Zaku from her family’s work. She would be approved despite her age.
She was in the same graduating class as Char Aznable but, unlike one Lino Fernandez, had the good sense to keep her mouth shut about recognizing him. The two seemed to share an unspoken understanding about the matter and seldom interacted except when forced to. Yoruichi’s aptitude scores were exceptional, and she was even suspected of being a Newtype, but no conclusive proof of the matter could ever be gained. Although her reflexes were phenomenal—and she routinely had “gut feelings” and premonitions that proved accurate, although she refused to admit this to anyone—she did not respond to Newtype testing in an appreciable way, nor did she resonate with any known Newtypes. (It would only become clear much, much later that this was due to her essentially permanently resonating with Kūkaku, a very strong Newtype.)
Yoruichi would graduate in U.C. 0078 and joined the Teaching Mobile Battalion as an Ensign until the creation of the Space Attack Force, which she transitioned to as a Lieutenant Junior Grade. She would start the One Year War, which began on January 3, U.C. 0079, piloting a MS-05B Zaku I. With multiple enemy ship shootdowns in the One Week Battle which kicked off the war, she acquitted herself well enough to be promoted to Lieutenant and was given access to and permission to customize a MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type. She’d just begun that process when Zeon’s Operation British resulted in the total destruction of Sydney, Australia and much of the rest of the continent on January 10, U.C. 0079, severely undermining her belief in the war effort.
Nonetheless, she readied herself and her Zaku II for more action, and was deployed in the Battle of Loum at Side 5 on January 15, U.C. 0079. She again performed well—albeit not to the extent of Char—by sinking multiple Federation warships, earning the title of ace and a moniker like his “Red Comet”, Johnny Ridden’s “Crimson Lightning”, and Shin Matsunaga’s “White Wolf”: “Scarlet Flash”. She was summarily promoted to Lieutenant Commander. (Just like Johnny Ridden’s red Zaku II would often later be confused for Char’s slightly more pink one, Yoruichi’s slightly orange unit would be too, adding to Char’s mystique.)
But in the aftermath of the battle, Yoruichi was already fully disillusioned with the war. She was well aware the Battle of Loum had been a pyrrhic victory and the death toll from it, the colony drop on Sydney, and other atrocities could conservatively be estimated at three billion dead. It was clear to her that Zeon was in the wrong. While the Antarctic Treaty was being negotiated in late January, she had a parting with Kūkaku—“It’s not ‘goodbye’; stay alive for me,” and an exchange of rings with all that meant—and defected. She first disappeared into the newly shattered remnants of Side 5 while on patrol with her Zaku II, then raided a dead colony’s bank for rare metals with which to barter, and finally commandeered an abandoned cargo ship capable of atmospheric reentry, evading Zeon and Federation patrols on her way to Earth.
She made landfall in northwest Australia, figuring there would be little Federation presence or resistance as the area had been devastated by the colony’s descent, and there were few military facilities in the vicinity. She proceeded to Port Hedland with her Zaku II after destroying the cargo vessel to cover her tracks, intending to secure the services of an old ore freighter through carrots and sticks.
Yoruichi had it in mind to try and exchange her Zaku II to the Federation in exchange for security guarantees and an opportunity to fight on their behalf, but doing that without just ending up as a POW would be difficult. Her initial plan was to make it to a populated port that hadn’t been excessively damaged by the colony drop, like Hong Kong. The really nuanced plan went out the window once she was north of Java in Indonesian waters and news broke of Zeon’s 4th Terrestrial Mobile Division making landfall in the area. They made all available speed for Hong Kong.
Once they were docked in the city, Yoruichi put in a call to the Federation’s Hong Kong Base to try and negotiate so as to secure transport out of the theater as soon as possible. She was still on the line trying to convince whoever she was talking to when a Zeon armed reconnaissance patrol attacked the base itself. With her chances of outrunning Zeon’s ground advance about to go up in smoke, Yoruichi sortied in her own Zaku II. Although at something of a situational disadvantage to the Zeon MS-06J Zaku II Ground Types she encountered, her mobile suit and skills were still superior. She eradicated the attacking element, although the base was largely destroyed in the process, with Federation personnel evacuating as fuel and munitions stores detonated.
Left alone in the wreckage, Yoruichi would proceed to seize the opportunity presented to her. She scrambled to a computer and accessed a personnel database using the credentials of a dead Federation officer, identified a suitable physical match to herself who appeared to be killed in action during the attack, one Captain Shirley Shirke, and found the residence of the same, quickly appropriating her service uniform, identification, and several personal items to complete the disguise. She finally stole a Federation IFF transponder from an aircraft and hurriedly returned to her Zaku II, destroying both the empty dormitory and aircraft she’d just raided before retreating into the Chinese interior.
She would later (sloppily) repaint her Zaku II in Federation livery and activate the transponder, then begin working against Zeon activity in the sector while retreating toward Federation lines. Her cover story was simple: she’d been taken hostage during the attack along with the beacon to make it easier to subvert or coerce Federation forces, but had eventually overpowered and killed her captor and commandeered the mobile suit in an effort to bring it back to the Federation without getting it shot out from under her. She just had to pilot a little poorly when it counted—she still had better piloting skills with the Zaku II than any Federation soldier would.
Given the fog of war, the ruse worked, and Yoruichi eventually met up with other Federation forces, fighting in theater until they could be relieved in July by meeting up with some of the eight RX-79[G] Gundam Ground Type units which were not assigned to the Kojima Battalion in Southeast Asia. Once the Federation’s own mobile suits started to come online, Yoruichi worked her way through a progression of them, using the chaos of the One Year War to change identities and move about freely as it was little trouble to assume other identities and fake orders.
She would see action at the Battle of A Baoa Qu in an RGM-79SP GM Sniper II she acquired at the tail end of the One Year War—the conclusion of which on January 1, U.C. 0080, she would call her best birthday gift ever. She managed to make her way to Zum City after Zeon’s surrender as part of Federation peacekeeping forces, and after hurriedly finding Kūkaku, asked the other to run away with her. The two fled Zum City together, first stopping at Tigerbaum and then leaving Side 3 altogether, and eventually settled at Londenion in Side 1 with Yoruichi’s remaining war loot paying for their various accommodations—and a proper marriage and honeymoon.
Yoruichi’s GM Sniper II was subsequently heavily modified and upgraded by Kūkaku. Its most extensive refit came in the aftermath of Operation Stardust in late U.C. 0083, when it was modified using data, concepts, and components from Anaheim Electronics’ recently revealed Gundam Development Project—most notably a panoramic monitor/linear seat cockpit and four additional vernier thrusters. These upgrades would leave this first generation mobile suit with notably superior performance to most second generation movable frame mobile suits, with it only becoming completely obsolete after the deployment of MSZ-001 Zeta Gundam.
It was shortly after that conflict that Yoruichi and Kūkaku entered into a tacit partnership with Anaheim Electronics itself. This process was substantially eased given their family connections and the company's absorption of Zeonic, Zimmad, and MIP. Yoruichi would subsequently experimentally test much of the corporation’s latest prototype hardware within her own personal mobile suit, and also serve as a test pilot for their new completely integrated products.
Following the 30 Bunch Incident on July 31, U.C. 0085, Yoruichi would associate herself with the AEUG and Karaba, soon coming back into contact with Char Aznable and using her connections with Anaheim Electronics to facilitate both organizations much as he did, although the goals of the two were not really at all aligned beyond opposition to the Titans. It was for all these reasons that Yoruichi was in Amman in April of U.C. 0087 to rendezvous with the Argama prior to the Second Battle of Jaburo during the Gryps War. During this time she no longer bothered to disguise her identity, going by the rank of Lieutenant Commander (Shōsa) and her given name, Yoruichi Shihōin.
In June, U.C. 0087, with the escalation of the conflict, Yoruichi’s services to Anaheim Electronics were rewarded: when Kamille Bidan took delivery of the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, Yoruichi was presented with a fully modernized copy of the RX-78 GP04G Gundam “Gerbera” from the Gundam Development Project, dubbed the "Gerbera II". In addition to incorporating improvements used on the AGX-04 Gerbera Tetra, it also featured an upgraded reactor, a modern panoramic monitor/linear seat cockpit, Gundarium γ Alloy armor, and several other technical improvements. It was effectively the pinnacle of old-school mobile suit design, intended to remain highly competitive in a world of rapidly advancing movable frame competitors.
Nonetheless, much like the Zeta Gundam, its advantages would rapidly diminish. As the Gryps Conflict came to an end and the First Neo Zeon War began, Yoruichi would be given access to the second production article of the MSA-0011 S Gundam and its subsequent upgrade...

Episode 5 - Re-Entry to Earth
Tumblr media
Series: Mobile Suit Gundam Episode: 5 - Re-Entry to Earth https://gundam.fandom.com/wiki/Re-Entry_to_Earth
For getting more screentime than any character besides the actual protagonist, Char sure isn't represented in the opening, I've noticed.
White Base goes to re-enter Earth's atmosphere. The Zeon forces try to stop them. That's the basic synopsis. The RX-78 can't stay outside of White Base for very long or it'll burn up on re-entry - except it actually can survive re-entry on its own, which in retrospect removes some of the tension.
I liked this episode as a whole.
But that clear plastic tarp that Amuro pulled out of his ass is bothering me. It bothered me enough that I wrote a rant about it in the first draft of this post, talked to one of my gundam-fan friends about it, and have generally spent the morning thinking obsessively about it.
Tumblr media
The heat tarp is still lazy writing, in my opinion, and it negates a lot of the tension in this episode. There's this big question of 'Will the gundam get back onto White Base in time to survive re-entry' and the answer is 'no but it didn't matter anyway lol because there's something Amuro can pull out of his ass to survive it'.
I need to stop thinking about this and move on. I have a *lot* of Gundam to get through...
Tumblr media
... and this watchblog is going to take forever to write if I stop to obsess over every plot inconsistency. Especially since I'm predicting this is minor compared to some of the ones in other series.
So I'm going to do something constructive about it and move on. The Gundam RX-78-2, for all of its bullshit protagonist tech... is getting bumped down one spot in the ranking.
1. MS-05B Zaku I 2. MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type (up 1) 3. RX-78-2 Gundam (down 1) 4. MS-06 Zaku II 5. RX-75-4 Guntank 6. RX-77-2 Guncannon
And now I can move on.
Overall a pretty good episode which both stands on its own and sets up what's presumably the next arc (escaping from Zeon territory on Earth).

Episode 3 - Vote to Attack
https://gundam.fandom.com/wiki/Vote_to_Attack
Tumblr media
Series: Mobile Suit Gundam Episode: 3 - Vote to Attack https://gundam.fandom.com/wiki/Vote_to_Attack
This is the first episode so far that I've disliked.
We see some ship life - I don't want to say 'daily life', since I don't know if they've been a full day since events kicked off. Rations are delivered, Amuro's focusing on his new duties...
... and then the rest of the episode is a fight.
It's pretty one-sided, and I find myself sympathizing with the Zeon forces (as individuals) here. They're actual military soldiers going up against anime kids in plot armor.
That's not the reason why I dislike this episode... well, not the *main* reason. It all just feels like bridge-y filler. Amuro's a little bit better at piloting, the civilian crew see their first real in-depth battle, we have Amuro vs Char #2 (Which I'm giving Char the win on that duel, even if Char lost the greater-scope battle)... and things don't really progress past that?
I'd be surprised if this fight makes it into the compilation movies.
Anyway, the rankings!
1. MS-05B Zaku I (new) 2. RX-78-2 Gundam 3. MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type 4. MS-06 Zaku II 5. RX-75-4 Guntank (up 1) 6. RX-77-2 Guncannon (down 1)
The Guntank switches spots with the Guncannon, just because it gets some actual screentime. More importantly, we see the Zaku I, and while that's probably the most horribly obsolete mech in the entire series... it's still a design that I like. To me, it just screams 'old tech'. That goddamn support pillar in the dead middle of the visor is just so stupid, I love it.
I'll admit that part of my dislike for the RX-78 is the fact that it's just so oversaturated in the media - especially to an outside observer (myself till a couple years ago) the RX-78 is just everywhere.
It's also sort of the 'base' for all the other gundam types? Some of them seem to be 'RX-78 but also <feature>'.
Anyway. Onward to Episode 4...
