Kakkanad incident a warning to apartment residents associations says Kerala Health Minister
The Kakkanad incident is a warning to all apartment complex residents’ associations that a periodic self auditing is required to ensure that there is no contamination in drinking water supply lines within a flat complex, Health Minister, Veena George, said in the Assembly on June 20 (Thursday). “What happened at the Kakkanad DLF apartments can happen in any apartment and it should be ensured that there are no possibilities of the water from the sewage treatment plant getting mixed with the drinking water supply lines,” she added. Ms. George was replying to a submission by MLA Uma Thomas on the steps taken by the Health department in the wake of recent water contamination at the DLF apartment complex in Kochi, which resulted in hundreds of residents developing gastrointestinal illness. She said that the residents’ association of the Kakkanad DLF apartments complex have been served notices for violation of the provisions under the Kerala Public Health Act after the District Medical Officer and the district rapid response team, which inspected the water supply system in the complex, reported that there were grounds for the same. Directions have been issued to the residents’ association that the current water supply be discontinued and to ensure that only treated water provided by accredited agencies be supplied in the complex She also congratulated the apartment resident who contacted and alerted her to the issue of water contamination, which had affected hundreds of residents and would otherwise have gone unnoticed by the Health Department. A full team of the district health administration had inspected the water supply system at the apartment complex. The water from various sources, KWA, rainwater harvesting, borewell and the water supplied by tanker lorries, was purified and sent to the overhead tanks in each block. Samples had been collected from the overhead tanks and were sent for chemical and bacterial analysis. She said that as on June 19 (Wednesday), close to 500 persons had reported gastrointestinal issues and a team of the Health department was continuing to collect information from every single household. A medical team from the General Hospital Ernakulam was also camping in the premises and residents had been asked to report any health issues to them. Oral rehydration salts and zinc tablets have been supplied to all residents and directions have been issued to people that even if the water is RO-treated, it should be boiled for drinking purposes. The Minister said that the presence of coliform in water indicates faecal contamination, which can lead to several illnesses including hepatitis A, typhoid, and shigella and chlorination was the only scientific way to ensure safe water. The department was continuing to collaborate with the Water Resources, Local Self-Government, the Food Safety departments and the district administration regarding the issue, she added. Ground water re-charging of rain water from Fly Overs & Others - What a  Waste of Simple & wonderful opportunities
1. As per the Niti Aayog  report at reference R-1, 21 major cities (Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and others) are racing towards reaching  zero groundwater levels by 2020, affecting access of ground water for about 100 million people.  Please refer R-2 also.
2. To address this alarming situation, as one of the initiatives, all the residents/ owners are advised or insisted upon for installing rain water harvesting systems in all major households/apartment complexes, commercial complexes and others. It is yet to pick up in a big way. In this connection, We should realize the fact that the area of the households and others in any city would be varying from 40 to 60% (depending on the type of locality) and therefore, we may not be able to harvest rain water in more than 50 % of the area in any city considering only these areas, that too with lots of efforts from the authorities concerned.
3. Considering the seriousness of the situation, it is surprising to see that not much  serious effort is  being made to harvest the rain water from other relatively easier and massive sources like  fly overs, elevated metro lines, major roads,  play grounds, parks, old educational Institutes (viz. schools, colleges, Institutes, Universities & their campuses), Industries etc. 
4. In fact, from fly overs/elevated metro lines the collected rain water is let down through pipelines on the ground (drains & roads). This water from the pipes can be directly charged to the ground through a simple filtration system into  recharge bore wells similar to the one followed in the video at R- 3 at a nominal cost. It is worthwhile to mention here that below all the fly overs sufficient free space is available for accommodating such recharging bore wells with filtration system. 
5. Further, there are so many wide roads in the city like ring roads and State/National High ways from where rain water can be harvested without much effort/incurring cost similar to the one in video at R-3. The potential for recharging of ground water from these sources is quite huge. For example: in the NICE road of Bengaluru alone (Spread over a length of over 50 kms and an average width of over 50 ms) the recharging potential is around 1.125 billion litres per year (considering a run off coefficient of 0.45) which is equivalent to more than a days of water requirement for the entire population of Bengaluru. Too huge Opportunity to waste????
6. It is also seen that hardly there are any recharging systems provided in innumerable parks (refer R-5),  play grounds, Campuses etc (in all spreading out in hundreds/thousands of acres) in Bengaluru wherein there is a potential to harvest millions of litres of rain water and this can be harvested by installing recharging bore wells with filtration systems similar to that shown in video in R-3 below at negligible costs. The potential for rain water harvesting per acre per year in Bengaluru in a play ground and parks is around 1.2 and 0.8 million liters respectively.
7. Most of the major old apartment & commercial complexes/office & college/school buildings/industries also do not have rain water harvesting systems even though many of them depend on bore wells for their regular water requirements. Installation of a bore well recharging system for harvesting rain water from rooftops similar to that shown in the video at R-4 is very simple and do not cost more than a few thousand rupees.
8.In addition, there are  lakhs of defunct bore wells available every where in the cities or towns/villages across the country. Through these defunct bore wells ground water can be recharged coupled with simple filtration systems at a nominal cost similar to the one shown in the video at R-3. Even though actions has been initiated for utilizing them accordingly, it is yet to pick up pace.  
9. As you can see from the above, there are such simple and huge opportunities exists for harvesting rain water to recharge the ground water and we are wasting the same due to lack of ideas or initiatives or firmness for implementation of the same from those that matters?. When are we going to realize this and exploit these wonderful and simple opportunities for our benefit and avoid the alarming situation of reaching zero ground water & create a system of sustainability ?? It is high time for all of us to take note of it for taking immediate action not only to improve the Quality of life future generations but also our own continued existence.

The way things are going, South Africa will be lucky to have a fully fit international-class team on the park by the time their six-match One-Day International series against India draws to a close. That’s an exaggeration, of course, but injuries have hit South Africa hard. They started the series without AB de Villiers for the first three ODIs, lost Faf du Plessis after the first ODI and then lost Quinton de Kock after the second. It may be only three players, but those are three that are practically irreplaceable.
As a result, South Africa will be heading into the third ODI at Newlands in Cape Town on Wednesday (February 7) as the definite underdogs. A month ago, both teams had arrived at the same venue with the home side the favourite in what promised to be an exciting Test series. The long format lived up to its promise, but while much the same was expected in 50-overs cricket, South Africa’s crippling injuries have made it one-way traffic so far.
That is not the only thing that has changed in a month. Newlands is still one of the prettiest venues in the world, and the Table Mountain still provides a backdrop like no other — but it’s parched. The lush outfield has hints of brown appearing all over, and the water crisis that had hit the city has only worsened. The rationing of water has gone from 80 litres per day down to 50 litres in households, and the outfield hasn’t been able to be watered everyday due to the severe water shortage and consequent restrictions.
“We all know that there is a drought here and we respect that,” said Shikhar Dhawan on Tuesday. “We are aware that we have to save as much water as we can, because people need it. We respect that.”
Borewell water has been used to water the pitch, which is also going to be a completely different animal than the seaming, bouncing track that was dished out for the first Test. Even Flint, the curator, indicated that the ODI deck would be a normal one, with runs for the taking.

Whether that translates into South Africa actually getting the runs remains to be seen. They have read Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav worse than a third grader handed an advanced calculus book, and though a variety of wrist-spinners were pressed into action at the team’s nets on match eve, you can’t really expect net bowlers to replicate the level of skill and control that India’s spinners have.
Kagiso Rabada, one of the few players from the home side to have held his own with the team floundering, said that the multiple injuries could be a ‘blessing in disguise’ in terms of widening the pool of players to choose from. “It gives other players are chance,” said the pacer. “We’ve got players who have been playing in franchise cricket for a while and doing pretty well. Those three names that have dropped out of the team are pretty much irreplaceable at the moment. So, it just gives guys a chance to widen the pool so other players can experience international cricket. Widening the pool is great. Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise.”
India’s playing XI looks settled and primed, which means there should be no changes unless fitness issues crop up. South Africa will be handing a debut to Heinrich Klaasen, the Titans wicketkeeper who had been added to the squad after the first ODI. With de Kock ruled out now, Klaasen finds himself the only wicketkeeper in the squad. He has been in good form in the domestic one-dayers, which will help him, but tackling India’s bowling attack will be a different challenge altogether. Given de Kock’s injury, it also looks likely that Aiden Markram will push himself up the order to open alongside Hashim Amla.
It’s been a rough initiation for Markram as a captain, though if he wanted a test by fire to understand all the extreme pressures of captaincy, he’s certainly getting a crash course.
The forecast for the match is sunny skies, which would ordinarily be good news for cricket. For the South African team, and the Cape Town residents in particular, that is far from welcome. A spell of rain and a washed out match may be just what the team requires to get their bearings back, while it’s certainly what the city requires to start getting itself back on its feet.
