CSL is a valuable learning experience for students. While academia teaches you what has been determined to be required in that field of study, it is not the same as having that real-world experience that you get in any CSL work.
Surprisingly, university graduates sometimes do not have the confidence to share what they know, and that's where CSL comes in. Real-world projects help build that confidence. It's important to encourage graduates that they are knowledgeable and have lots to offer in the community. Also, students should realize that they are truly there for themselves, for their professional development and not completely for us, the community agency. By taking on projects and learning to apply practical skills through our organization, they can help bring the changes we need to see in our world. One of the assets that NSTEP offers is the interdisciplinary makeup of our Health Champion Coordinators. It will take all of us working together to address the issues within the social determinants of health.
CSL has been instrumental in offering new ideas to NSTEP. I recently was connected by the CSL team with a French professor looking for projects for students to take on. We ended up giving these students all our Grade 1 teacher nutritional lesson plans to translate to French. Along this process, they started to understand the purpose that NSTEP serves in the community. A student in the Faculty of Education shared after the project how shocked they were to learn about how important nutrition was as a future educator. It was that real-world connection that CSL brought that helped provide that excitement and learning moment for them.
If you think about where you are going to have a career in the future, of course you need a degree but there are so many more educational opportunities that the University of Alberta provides. I always tell students that the jobs you have are going to be the ones you create, based on the needs in society. We need transformation in this world and CSL helps foster that.
I’ve found that along the way of students' education journeys, especially when they hit their third or fourth year, they may have a professor or course that really resonates with them. This moment changes their perspective and hits a nerve that opens their passions and they figure out what they truly want to do. We want people in society to be doing things they care about because that's when they are the most productive and happy. CSL gives students the opportunity to have that meaningful moment.
Why did you choose to incorporate CSL in NSTEP?
Deb Hymers founded NSTEP in Calgary as a teacher. As a nurse, I wanted to help grow NSTEP to Edmonton. She had reached out previously to practicum students from MRU and SAIT so I decided that it would be a great opportunity to go do the same at the U of A. I spoke with a practicum instructor for Physical Education so started the connection through there. Since then, we have had students from a variety of areas, including Kinesiology, Human Ecology, Pharmacy, Marketing, and the French program. We have even received requests to come to universities in Eastern Canada. This summer we participated in the UEVAL program with an excellent group of master’s students that created our evaluation plan for our NSTEP Certificate Program. Not all universities offer a Community Service-Learning program, but the University of Alberta is doing amazing work and these efforts are being noticed. I am always happy to share our NSTEP story and CSL experience with other institutions so that more students can have this valuable learning experience.
