I am sorry if this is an annoying question but do you have a guide or suggestions for picking out a first camera for someone who wants to take pictures of nature, specifically insects and other small things?
Hi! Not annoying at all!
You've got a few routes to this but all will require a macro lens.
In all cases I recommend buying second hand if you're in a country where it's safe to do so (any EU or NA country would be fine, for instance). You can use mpb.com or keh, it's usually less of a hassle than ebay or local marketplaces.
You could get something like a Nikon D7200 with a 105mm 2.8 AF-S G macro or a 60mm 2.8 G Macro. That's the cheaper option without compromising on quality. I recommend the 105 over the 60 because the 105 has stabilisation and for macro photography it is a must have.
A D7500 would be a bit better but frankly At that point I'd rather get a Z50 (or Zfc, see below) because then you'd be in a future proofed camera system (DSLRs — "D" cameras — are not produced anymore only mirrorless cameras of the Z system will come out) but then you'll need to get an FTZ adapter so you can still use the same, older lenses on the Z cameras like shown here:
If money isn't too much of a concern and decide to go for a Nikon Z camera you could get the native lenses (so you don't need an adapter). They'll perform a bit better too. Then it's either the NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S lens or the NIKKOR Z MC 50mm f/2.8 lens. Out of the two, once again, the 105 makes more sense (but is more expensive) because it is stabilized. Z cameras also have ibis so the 50mm would work too but you'd probably need to be closer to the subject you're photographing with this lens.
If you enjoy nice looks in a camera rather than a Z50 you can go for a ZfC. Its retro look is really a selling point but it would probably be harder to find second hand.
All of these recommendations have been of APS-C cameras, which makes sense for macro-photography (smaller sensor with 1:1 lens = subject is bigger on them).
If you've got an even bigger budget though, I would consider a second hand Z7, which is an imaging beast but that would be an other discussion entirely.
Other brands would have similar offers but bang-for-buck wise Nikon makes a lot of sense especially if you plan to grow into the hobby. Canon is unfortunately known for being a heartless cash-grabber. While Sony will work but not have a cheaper DSLR option. Fujifilm APS-C is unfortunately overhyped in my opinion, so Nikon makes more sense for this particular request.
Not that along side the 105 you'll want another lens to be able to do other things. For that either a 35mm 1.8 DX on the D7200 (or with FTZ on a Z camera) or a Z 28mm F2 on a Z camera will do.
Note that none of these are zoom lenses, they're prime fixed focal length lenses (aka prime lenses). They're more qualitative than zooms imho and the limitation of having one fixed field of view actually makes taking pictures more engaging as you have to move around with your feet to get the compositions you want.

After the Fire – overall winner and change in the landscape winner. “After a large heath fire near Beaulieu in the New Forest national park, I’d recognised that to get a worthwhile picture I would need a misty morning to hide the large oil refinery complex that sits on the edge of Southampton Water and which would be very visible above the tree line in the background. Eventually that morning came and to add to the morning was a great sunrise. Some months later and most of these burnt remnants of gorse bushes and the lone tree have now gone.” (Category sponsored by MPB.com.)

My partner writes, as well as dabbles in sewing and art as well and more often than not they get their supplies from places like 5 below, or dollar tree. I think the most "expensive" place they get stuff from is walmart.
And I do photography and can confirm that you don't need an expensive camera at all to get into it. As mentioned previously, phone cameras are honestly really impressive now. Along with phones, you can get a basic point and shoot camera at fairly decent prices. Don't forget about the used market as well. There are a bunch of great sites where you can get older cameras for fairly cheap. I recently got an 11 year old nikon d800, which is a professional dslr. It originally was around $3000, but I got it for $500 ish. While that is still very expensive, it's a good example of how much you can save by not getting the newest camera right off the bat. Keh.com and mpb.com are my go-to places to buy camera gear, as well as a local camera store that I go to. Which is honestly another good option. If you have a local camera store, go visit and get to know the people who work there. I've gone to mine so often that a lot of the time, they'll drop the price for things a little for me.
And as far as lenses go, a basic kit lens is more than enough when you're starting out. You don't need a ton of different lenses with photography. It really is all about your eye and composition. There is also the option of getting vintage lenses, I shoot a majority of the time using a lens I got from my aunts old film camera. Most adaptors for lenses are incredibly cheap.
Editing wise, there are a ton of different options available. For a while when I first started out I would send my photos to my phone and edit on there. Photoshop express is free and really easy to use, I highly recommend it. As well as lightroom mobile.
Also, if anyone has any questions about photography, I'd be happy to answer!
Every fun post on here that encourages people to have hobbies/be creative always gets an avalanche of "Some people are poor Karen" type reactions and respectfully, you're all super annoying. I've never lived above the poverty line and this is a list of hobbies I have that were cheap or entirely free:
Read books: Go to the library, lend a book from a friend
knitting, crochet, embroidery: Get some needles from the bargan store and ask around, people have leftovers from projects they'll happily give you. Thrift stores also often carry leftover fabric and other supplies. And talk about your hobby loud enough and an old lady will show up and gift you their whole collection, because there are way more old ladies with a closet full of wool than there are grandchildren who want to take up the hobby.
Origami/paper crafts: get some scrap paper and scissors, watch a youtube tutorial
walking: put on shoes open door
pilates/yoga/etc: get a mat or just use your carpet, watch a youtube tutorial
Houseplants: look online for people that swap plant cuttings. There are always people giving out stuff for free to get you started. If you're nice enough you'll probably get extra
gardening: You're gonna need some space for this one of course but you can just play around with seeds and cuttings from your grocery vegetables.
aquarium keeping is a bit of an obscure one but I got most of my stuff second hand for cheap or free and now I have a few thousand euro worth of material and plants.
drawing/art: You get very far just playing with bargan store materials. I did my entire art degree with mostly those.
writing: Rotate a cow in your head for free
cooking: again one you can make very expensive, but there are many budget recipes online for free. Look for African or Asian shops to get good rice and cheap spices.
Join a non-profit: Cities will have creative organisations who let you use woodworking machines or screen presses or laser cutters or 3D printers etc etc etc for a small fee. Some libraries also lend out materials.
candle making: You need some molds (cheap), wick, two old cooking pots for au bain marie melting and a ton of scrap candles, ask people to keep them aside for you.
a herbarium, flower pressing: Leaves are free, wildflowers too, ask if you can take from peoples gardens.
puzzles: thrift stores, your grandma probably
Citizen science: look for projects in your area or get the iNaturalist app
And lastly and most importantly: Share! Share your supllies, share your knowledge. Surround yourself with other creative people and before you know it someone will give you a pot of homemade jam and when you want to paint your kabinet someone will have leftover paint in just the right color and you can give them a homemade candle in return and everyone is having fun and building skills and friendships and not a cent is exchanged. We have always lived like this, it's what humans are build to do.
And all of it sure beats sitting behind a computer going "No stranger, I refuse to let myself have a good time."
Anyway I'm logging off bc I'm making some badges for a friend who cooked for me and then I'm going to fix some holes in everyones clothes.

Wearing It Well
It’s funny how an activity can go from low-brow proletariat, to on-trend chic in a short period of time. But inflation and economic uncertainty can cause tidal shifts in mind and mood. Just ask my daughters, for whom thrifting can take up an entire Saturday when one goes to visit the other. Never mind any gender differences, I never would have thought of doing that at any stage in my life.
There’s something unsettling to me about buying someone else’s clothes. Even a used camera or bike will give me hesitation, because I don’t know how the previous owner used them. Oh, and the stigma associated with having to buy someone’s cast-offs? When I was growing up, that was a badge of dishonor.
Said the guy who hasn’t bought a brand-new vehicle since 1991. Oh well, my money, my exception.
The fact of the matter is, resale in all its forms is now a huge part of the economy, and in many cases, escapes the wrath of the tax man. Any stigma associated with buying used has faded to new lows, and maybe it’s high time I opened my mind to the possibility.
One could argue that it all started with garage sales in the 1970s, which became very commonplace in suburbia. In 1995, the launches of eBay and CraigsList took it all online. In 1998, Plato’s Closet opened. These franchised thrift stores focused on a younger demographic, and encouraged the wear-and-share economy.
Today, we can add Facebook Marketplace to the mix, as well as a slew of resale shops, many of which are chains like Clothes Mentor, as well as online thrifters like thredUP, Poshmark, and others. It has never been easier to sell your gently-used clothes. And it doesn’t end there. MPB.com is the biggest online shop for used camera gear, while The Pro’s Closet and Bike Exchange do the same for high-end bicycles.
A recent survey said that 85% of Americans say they bought or sold items in the last year. That’s significant. For sellers, they’re clearing out things in closets and garages that are sitting idle, and it provides cash at a time when we could all use a little more. For buyers, they’re scooping up bargains that also translate into cash savings at a time when we need it. Did you notice what happened to the price of gasoline in the nation’s midsection the last ten days? If you use 20 gallons a week, that’s $9-10 a week that your cost of living just shot up.
But there are other forces at play as well, and they have a lot to do with a growing sense of personal responsibility and sustainability. Our economy is consumer-driven, with about 70% of GDP accounted for by consumer purchasing. Why hoard things when someone else could be using them? And why toss them in the dumpster when there is still some useable life remaining?
Concerns about being good citizens is the most compelling argument for me, although I am certainly not opposed to saving money. A good laundering or two can wash away any old germs the previous owner left behind (not to mention their DNA, I hope).
As for bikes and cameras, unless I know the seller, I still have concerns. Subtle cracks in a bike frame can lead to catastrophic results when zooming down a mountain; a dropped camera or lens brings with it other worries. Once again, if I know the seller and have seen them use said equipment, I might just feel better about buying it.
The effect of all this thrifting will be felt at retail for years to come, because anyone selling brand new merchandise is going to pay the price. Yeah, I get it. The availability of resale items is totally contingent upon someone buying ever more new items. It is a cycle. There will always be those who buy new.
Furthermore, unless these transactions occur in resale and consignment shops, they dodged the tax bullet. Well, the exception is motor vehicles, because they will get you when you try to register it, but otherwise, the after-market P2P economy is very much alive and well. I don’t think many consumers will cry over declining sales tax revenues.
But at least we are helping create a loop out of our consumption. It can go on and on for as long as the item still has a few ounces of value remaining. And the more we can keep out of landfills, as well as our closets and garages, the better off we will all be. It is the hallmark of a capitalist society that such a large part of GDP is determined by We The People, but that’s a one-way highway.
By making it a loop, we can bypass the unwanted, ugly artifacts associated with all that manufacturing and consuming. Use it, and use it up, whether that responsibility is spread across one or a dozen people.
Now if you’ll excuse me, it’s time for me to go survey my closet. I bet I can clear out a lot of space.

Photo a day 73-75/360 pancake
New lens day! I just picked up this little 24mm lens off MPB.com, and it honestly gave me a bit of a chuckle that such a tiny lens came in such a big box, (Xbox one controller for scale!". But kudos to MPB for packing it so well, this thing was so padded that it probably could have fallen off a truck going full speed down the highway and survived!
So this is my first prime lens in a long time, takes a little getting used to the fact that you can't zoom in. But I also don't have to be a meter and a half away from anything I want to take a photo of now, so that's nice. LOL!
I have a bit of learning to do to get used to using a prime lens again, it's been a while. But I'm looking forward to it.
I still can't get over how tiny this little lens is! So little!

This Old Lens (Medium Format): SMC Pentax-FA 645 45-85mm F4.5
Have not had this Pentax 645 AF variant lens before. But after having such good luck with the 80-160mm f/4.5 I jumped at this lens when it showed up at MPB.com at a price I could not refuse. https://flic.kr/p/2nb3rQ4 The first time I ever purchased gear from MPB.com. And it will not be my last. Came with caps, a MPB branded box, and a lens hood. https://flic.kr/p/2nb3uT8 The lens is missing…
