7 Bollywood Actresses Who Earned Huge Success As Politicians
Chaitra Krishnan Hyderabd040-395603080 July 12, 2019
Bollywood and politics are two mediums in India that directly reach the largest chunk of the masses. If you take a moment to compare the two, you’d find many similarities between them (including the involvement of tonnes of money and truckloads of fame). Also, both Bollywood and politics hold immense power when it comes to influencing the minds of the public. This is probably why we’ve seen many Bollywood celebrities try their luck in politics.
This transition of fame from elsewhere to politics isn’t all exclusive to just Bollywood actors. We’ve seen sportsmen, athletes, and celebrities from various other fields joining the club. For those celebrities who are already successful in their own fields, politics becomes a place to re-establish their public image and serve the country. For the parties, they are valuable candidates since they’re already popular among the public making it a win-win situation for the party. Being specific to Bollywood, there are actors who have tried their luck in politics after not getting the success they desired from the film industry and there are stars that have joined politics after they’ve cut down the number of movies to work in.
Over the years, Indian politics has had many Bollywood actresses enter politics and prove that they are not just pretty faces but also strong-minded women who want to serve the nation. Let’s take a look at some of the Bollywood actresses who made it big in politics.
1. Jaya Bachchan

Mrs. Bachchan is one of the golden stars of her time in Bollywood wholater on went on to establish a strong career in politics. Jaya was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2004 from the Samajwadi Party and was representing Uttar Pradesh. She got elected for the second time in 2006, for the third time in 2012, and for the fourth time in 2018! Now, that’s definitely a strong political career.
2. Hema Malini
dreamgirlhemamalini / Instagram
The dream girl of Bollywood stepped into politics when she campaigned for actor Vinod Khanna who was a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, in Punjab. Later in 2004, Hema joined BJP officially. After being nominated by the then President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, she served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2003 to 2009. Hema took in charge as the General Secretary of BJP in 2010 which was a huge leap in her political career. She won the general elections in 2014 from the Mathura constituency to become a member of the Lok Sabha.
3. Rekha

Rekha is a very versatile actress whose beauty is timeless. At 64, she still dazzles. She was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the President in 2012 along with Sachin Tendulkar. Reportedly, Jaya Bachchan who was also a Rajyasabha MP then, moved to another chair so that she will not be in the same frame with Rekha (we know why).
4. Isha Koppikar
isha_konnects / Instagram
Isha Kopikkar may not have made it big in Bollywood, but she’s doing quite well in the field of politics. The actress, who is remembered for her performance in movies like Krishna Cottage and Don 2, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party earlier in January this year. Isha is appointed as the working president of the Women Transport Wing.
5. Kirron Kher

Kirron Kher is one of the most loved Bollywood actresses of yesteryear who is shining even today. Kirron, who also judges reality shows like India’s Got Talent alongside Malaika Arora and Karan Johar joined the politics in 2009. She made her big step by being a member of BJP after which she campaigned for the party in many parts of the country for the 2011 municipal corporation elections. In 2014, she became a Lok Sabha member from Chandigarh. Again in 2019, she won the general elections in Chandigarh against Congress Party candidate Pawan Kumar Bansal.
6. Gul Panag

The actress and model who is known for her adventurous lifestyle has also tried her luck in politics. For the 2014 general elections, Gul was the candidate for the Aam Aadmi Party in Chandigarh. However, she was overtaken by Kirron Kher and she came third in the election.
7. Shabana Azmi
azmishabana18 / Instagram
Shabana Azmi is one of the most outstanding actresses Bollywood has ever had and her choice of movies never fail to surprise us. Her parents Kaifi Azmi and Shaukat Azmi were both members of the Communist Party of India. So, it wasn’t such a surprise when she decided to join politics. Shabana was nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1997 and she served the membership till 2003. Since then she has been approached by many political parties to contest in the elections but Shabana has taken more interest in working towards the empowerment of women without joining any party.
Smriti Irani who is a huge star on the small screen has also made it really big in politics. Also, South Indian actresses like the late Jayalalitha became a revolutionary figure in the history of Indian politics. Which actress do you think is the most successful politician? Who else do you think would do well in politics? Share your opinions with us in the comments section below.

Will Keep Talking About India Without Joining Politics: Actor Anupam Kher
New: Delhi : Veteran actor Anupam Kher, who will next be seen in the film "The Accidental Prime Minister", has compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress President Rahul Gandhi, saying while the former has a road map for the country's development, the latter is yet to share his vision for the nation's future.
The actor's wife Kirron Kher is Chandigarh's BJP MP, but Anupam, who has been vocal about India's social, political and economic issues, says he will keep talking about the country without joining the world of politics.
He shared his thoughts on a question and answer session with his fans on micro-blogging platform Twitter while he was on a flight to New York.
When a Twitter user asked Anupam to rate Modi's performance as a Prime Minister and if he has worked on issues that the nation is suffering from, the actor said: "PM Modi is earnestly working for the betterment of the country. It is for all to see. I have faith in his capabilities and intentions."
Asked to draw a comparison between Modi and Rahul Gandhi, Anupam commented: "Mr. Modi is a self made man. He seems to have kind of a road map for the development of India. Mr. Gandhi has so far got things on a platter so he is yet to tell us what is his vision for the future of India."
One user asked Anupam for suggestions for Rahul Gandhi after his London conference.
Anupam quipped: "Dil se bolo mere dost (Speak from the heart, my friend)."
A user urged Anupam to point out one work by Modi with proof for the betterment of India and its poor people.
"For that you can file a RTI," responded Anupam, who, in another response, shared that his favourite Prime Ministers of India have been Lal Bahadar Shastri and P.V. Narasimha Rao, apart from Modi.
He said he also found the Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee "remarkable and very inspirational".
Who do you think will win the 2019 general elections, asked one user.
"The party that gets the maximum votes," Anupam said.
Where do you see India in 5 years, literacy and economy wise?
"We are only a 71-year-old country. We may have a long journey but we are going at a great speed. We are the bestest," the actor said on an optimistic note.
Asked if there were any chances of him joining politics, the "Saaransh" actor said: "I will continue talking about the country without joining politics."
In "The Accidental Prime Minister", Anupam will be seen essaying former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Chandigarh Metro | After spending Rs 1.5 crores on survey, no work on metro rail project
Chandigarh: Chandigarh metro rail entangled in files for more than 11 years of spending crores rupees on the survey, will ever come on track? After spending around Rs 1.5 crore on DPR and preparation of surveys, Urban Development Ministry and MP Kirron Kher have questioned its practicality.
Now MP Kirron Kher said that there is no requirement to run metro rail in the City. Earlier, former MP Pawan Bansal also used to argue the same, but now he is advocating Metro Rail due to the increasing traffic problem in the city. Former MP Satpal Jain is also supporting metro rail project in the city.
Kirron Kher Member of Parliament from Chandigarh
In a meeting of the committee held under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in July last year, MP Kher also opposed the metro rail project in Chandigarh. The meeting was also attended by City Administrator VP Singh Bandour and other members. There is no clearance from Urban Development Ministry.
Discussion started in the year 2006 to start metro rail project for Chandigarh. In 2012, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had also prepared a detailed project report (DPR) for Chandigarh Metro rail project. According to the DPR, initial project cost including land cost and tax was estimated to be approximately Rs 10,900 crores. A 37-km metro track was proposed for the city, whereas for Punjab there was a track length of 7.8 km and 6.41 km for Panchkula. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Haryana, Punjab and UT Administration was also signed, but the Ministry of Urban Development has not yet given its approval for the project.

Chandigarh Metro | Centre to review DPR of proposed metro rail project in City again
Tumblr media
Chandigarh: Hopes for having a metro rail project in Chandigarh and its periphery were revived here on Wednesday. Union minister of state for housing and urban affairs (independent charge) Hardeep Singh Puri said at a function in Sector 17 that the Centre was going to evaluate the proposal’s detailed project report (DPR) again.
The only difference will be that the Centre will make the new assessment on the basis of Metro Rail Policy-2017, which the Union Cabinet had approved on August 16 this year. Talking to journalists on the sidelines of a financial-inclusion camp at the Parade Ground in Sector 17 here, Puri said Centre had asked all states and UTs which had prepared DPRs for Metro rail projects, to submit fresh proposals for an evaluation under the new policy.
The project had suffered a major setback after the Union home minister advisory committee (HMAC) had termed the project unfeasible for Chandigarh in July this year. Members of the committee, which is headed by Union home minister Rajnath Singh, had asked the administration to look for alternatives to strengthen public transport.
In the past, Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher has also raised questions about the project’s viability. In the past few years, the administration has been making efforts to better public transportation. Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) buses ply on 75 routes with a waiting period for boarding a bus varying from 20 minutes to over one and half hours.
In the past few years, Chandigarh has witnessed a substantial increase in traffic. In the absence of an efficient public transport system, residents prefer two-wheelers and cars, leading to congestion on the roads. A high volume of vehicles has also led to deterioration of air quality.
Chandigarh has the highest density of vehicles in India, with around 12 lakh registered vehicles, including two-wheelers and four-wheelers. The number of vehicles is over two per house.
As per the revised detailed project report prepared by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, the project will cost Rs 13,600 crore, of which Chandigarh will have to chip in with around Rs 5,000 crore, while the remaining amount is to be shared by the state governments of Punjab and Haryana. The total length of the project covering Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula is 37.57 km. A majority of the two corridors falls in Chandigarh. In June 2015, Chandigarh, Haryana and Punjab had signed a memorandum of understanding for the formation of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for execution of project.
