So I'm from the Pacific Ocean, and folks may think California is Sunny and Warm and Temperate year-round, aside from fires and y'know... But the Pacific Ocean is COLD. Like 60 degrees cold. Seasonally it changes, you know, down to 50 or so in the Winter. I never really swam in the water, and you need a wetsuit to surf and such, and I can't surf. I mostly just people-watched and went shell hunting. There was a really good spot for sand dollars. Not much in the way of tide pools where I was because it was very very sandy and not very rocky, aside from the wavebreaker outcrops that you're not technically supposed to climb on. But you could find lil sand crabs if you shoved your hands deep into the sand when a wave was pulling in or out.
Why dig for them? Just cause they're cool. Apparently, they're good fish bait but I never knew the details of harvesting them. I just wanted to look at the little buggers. They didn't pinch or anything, they just tried to dig between your fingers and it kind of tickled. Also watch out for the rip.
rb for sample size etc etc !! <3

Have you ever seen one of these critters at the beach? Also known as “sand crabs” or “sand fleas,” Pacific mole crabs (Emerita analoga) can be found across the western coasts of North and South America. East Coast residents might encounter their relatives, the Atlantic sand crabs (Emerita talpoida), during summertime beach trips. Mole crabs migrate with the tides, keeping up with breaking waves to filter feed on plankton brought in by the crashing waters. These critters use their back legs to get around, and they burrow backwards, too.

@buzzingblueberrybee submitted: Sorry about your foot! Here's a Fiery Searcher.
And a sea louse, I think!
Thank you! Both are very good. I think a sea louse/mole crab can be an honorary bug :)

Fun fact moles have evolved separately multiple times, similar to crabs. Moles are also peak performance
