last 2023 book thoughts
currently curled up hungover eating leftover bday cake trying to get another chapter of Absalom Absalom (Faulkner) down before i go out but its so. wordy.
Dream Baby (McAllister) - hectic, neurotic, and good. I think I found a pdf of the short story and not the full, expanded novel (?). Such a good opener tho if i can be bothered to read the full version on the Internet Archive. Reads like a madwoman's confession.
Whistle (James Jones) tragic that the author died before it was finished so it wrapped up very quickly. While i did expect the ending it was still... unsatisfactory i guess. Also idk how you go from the deep philosophical questions of mans tendency to violence and the question of what you truly believe in and fight for to an 100 day orgy and the question of 'do real men eat pussy'- i get the book is about recovery from war and being a civilian man again and sex plays a huge role in human life, however its still deranged how there's like one chapter on Landers struggling to readjust to smalltown life and the expectations surrounding him but 20+ chapters of unhinged hotel debauchery and the 30 year old 1st Sgt fucking a girl who just graduated. Sus. i would die for Fife/Marion Landers tho.
Go to the Widow Maker - DNF because "wow i want to jack off underwater" is not the worlds best plot hook, but the descriptions of diving is so good it almost makes me not hate cavediving. Maybe i should stop reading books by men. Maybe. im gonna pick it back up and just skip all the shit about his girlfriend and his mistress and her husband and get to the swimming.
Revolutionary Road (Yates) - at part 2. Good but a little unsure of where it's going apart from the two main characters doing a lot fo thinking. Love the descriptions. Apparently a common read for sixth form (according to the cashier i got it off) so shud be life changing or something.
The Leopard (Lampedusa)- maybe 1/3 the way through? I need to read more Italian history circa the Risorgimento to understand the context but god i love the writing style.
2024 TBR; Life and Fate (Goodman), reattempt Wise Blood (O'Conor). Happy new year!
#Vile hangover. but i will continue to read#MILD en ess eff double you content briefly mentioned in the reviews becayse unfortunatelt i read male authors :(#would love to hear more book recs!!!
