Hurricane Preparedness Kit for Cats and Dogs

A well-stocked Hurricane Preparedness Kit is essential for ensuring the safety and comfort of your pets during a storm. Here’s what to include:

Emergency Contact Information

ID Tags Ensure collars have up-to-date ID tags with contact details and any medical information.

Emergency Contact List Keep phone numbers for your vet, local animal shelters, and emergency contacts.

Basic Supplies

Food & Water Pack 3-7 days' worth of food and bottled water for each pet. A portable water filter is also helpful for extended emergencies.

Portable Bowls Collapsible or travel bowls for easy feeding and watering.

Can Opener Include a manual can opener for canned food.

Medications & Health Supplies

Medication Please ensure you have a minimum 7-14 day supply of prescribed medications.

First Aid Kit Your pet first aid kit should include antiseptic wipes, gauze, bandages, tweezers, and a thermometer suitable for cats and dogs.

Cooling Bandana, Vest, and/or Mat Helps manage body heat in hot, humid conditions. In a pinch, you can use ice packs stuffed into spare pillowcases.

Rechargeable USB Fan To ensure your pet gets access to continuous air flow, consider investing in a rechargeable USB fan. We prefer the clip-on kind like our mini Gaiatop because they fit almost anywhere and are easily charged with a standard USB C but they come in larger sizes and with different bases. The 8" Koonie is used by several vanlife YouTubers. You can also choose a fan that uses a battery pack that is interchangeable with your cordless tools and lawn gear.

Packaging Tips

Waterproof Bag or Container Store all items in a waterproof bag or container (dry bag) and place it inside or on top of one of the carriers. In an emergency, this will make everything grab and go. For pets with special needs, consider using a carabiner to attach a smaller dry bag with pet-specific items to their carrier or backpack. This also works well for multi-pet households if more than one family member will be helping with pet evacuation as each dry bag can contain all the pet related items for the pets each family member will be responsible for.

Easy Access Keep the kit in a readily accessible place for quick grab-and-go and make sure every family member knows where these items are, how to access them, and how to use them.

Training Your Pets for Emergency Situations

Being prepared isn’t just about having the right supplies—it’s also about training your pets to stay calm and respond to commands during an emergency. This is true for both dogs and cats.

Here’s how:

Practice Evacuation Drills Regularly practice quickly getting your pets into their carriers or crates. Reward them with treats and praise to create positive associations.

Go Bag Familiarity You can get your pets used to their emergency kits by slowly introducing them to the items. Let them sniff and explore the carriers, leashes, and other gear.

Dopo due anni durissimi, il Parco Natura Viva riapre le porte al pubblico il prossimo sabato 5 marzo. Ci sono aspettative di speranza per l’anno che dovrebbe tornare ad ospitare scuole e centri estivi, mentre non si sono mai fermati i progetti per la conservazione delle specie a rischio di estinzione né la quotidiana vita degli animali. Sono già iniziati i lavori per la realizzazione di quello che è stato ribattezzato “l’albergo degli ibis eremita”, ovvero il primo e l’unico luogo in Italia di accoglienza e riparo per ibis eremita selvatici. Dotato di tutti i comfort (pareti rocciose, nidi, cibo e assistenza veterinaria), gli esemplari in migrazione potranno utilizzarlo per sostare, rifocillarsi e ripartire a proprio piacimento. Messi qualche giorno fa su un volo intercontinentale invece 5000 microchip diretti all’arcipelago delle Seychelles. Destinazione finale isola di Mahè, dove il Parco Natura Viva e Green Teen Team, la fondazione della Principessa Theodora von Liechtenstein, hanno contribuito a comprare le strumentazioni necessarie per realizzare il primo censimento nazionale delle testuggini giganti delle Seychelles di proprietà privata. Finora mai dotate di un registro anagrafico, queste tartarughe verranno “microchippate” anche in natura, in modo da monitorarne anche il commercio illegale. “Sono stati mesi davvero duri - spiega Cesare Avesani Zaborra, direttore scientifico - e ringraziamo tutti i nostri operatori che non hanno mai perso la speranza, oltre ai cittadini e alle aziende che ci hanno sempre supportato. L’elenco dei nuovi nati si allunga con la preziosa nascita di tre piccoli pappagalli kea ancora nel nido, tra gli uccelli più intelligenti del regno animale e vulnerabile di estinzione. Anche questo, unico lieto evento d’Italia. Per tutto il periodo d’incubazione, papà Nestore si è preso cura di mamma Violet che nel frattempo covava mentre in questa fase, si occupa di portarle il cibo per nutrire i piccoli. Poi, sarà solo Nestore ad occuparsi dei pulcini fino a quando non saranno in grado di cibarsi da soli. La fattoria invece ha salutato la nascita di quattro agnellini di pecora brogna, unica razza autoctona delle montagne veronesi quasi scomparsa dagli allevamenti moderni. Tra gli arrivi illustri, la Convenzione sul commercio internazionale delle specie minacciate di estinzione (CITES) ha approvato la donazione al Parco Natura Viva da parte di un privato di tre femmine di ara rubrogenys, pappagallo boliviano in pericolo di estinzione. D’ora in poi questi esemplari non saranno più di proprietà privata ma inseriti nel circuito europeo per le specie minacciate che arricchiranno grazie al loro patrimonio genetico. Attesissima entro l’anno una nuova specie: arriveranno due fagiani di Edwards, uccello vietnamita criticamente minacciato di estinzione. RICERCA SCIENTIFICA Questo secondo anno di Covid ha visto l’interruzione anche dei tirocini degli studenti universitari. Il che ha però consentito di dedicarsi alla pubblicazione scientifica dei dati raccolti negli ultimi tempi e di ottenere 11 articoli scientifici. Gatti selvatici, tamarini, bertucce, pappagalli ara, lupi, fenicotteri e scimpanzé del Parco, così come testuggini delle Seychelles sia del Parco sia alle Seychelles e indri, una specie di lemure criticamente minacciata di estinzione, presente solo in Madagascar. Questi i protagonisti di

un’attività di studio che in questi anni, ha visto il coinvolgimento di 9 Università italiane e 4 straniere. L’OFFERTA PER GRANDI E PICCOLI “Nonostante le diffcoltà e i rincari generalizzati - spiega Maria Ordinario, direttore marketing e comunicazione - il Parco Natura Viva ha mantenuto per i due anni precedenti la stessa offerta di prezzo, per supportare le famiglie e i più piccoli nella visita all’aria aperta. Sempre più partecipativo lo zoccolo duro dei fedelissimi abbonati, che hanno dimostrato in questi 24 mesi di supportare con una generosità incredibile la mission del Parco”. Novità green per incentivare il riciclo e la riduzione della plastica: “Invitiamo i nostri abbonati a riportarci le vecchie tessere del Parco che non sono più in corso affinché noi possiamo rigenerarle ed evitare la produzione di nuovi rifiuti. Chi compirà questo gesto recandosi alla cassa, riceverà un gadget del Parco”. “I appreciate you springing me, but there is still a bar full of downworlders who might want to get you.” Maia motioned at the back door. She turned back to him. “Yeah, I know. But I had to come.” She saw him reach into his back pocket for something. When he opened his arms, she felt herself tense up. Not again. Before she could do say or do anything, he explained himself.

“It’s to remove the chip,” he said, a small smirk on his face. “Direct orders from my new boss.” Maia looked down at the microchipper, then back at his face.

“No more tracking.” The smirk was gone, and his eyes showed something she’d never seen before in them. Understanding. She nodded once, her curls bouncing with the motion. Then turned her back to him, lifting her hair and exposing her neck for him to get it over with.

When the chip had been put in her at the bar earlier that day, it had happened so fast, she hadn’t been able to react. And tonight, she wasn’t the wolf.

His hand landed on her shoulder, gently. Maia held her breath, forcing herself not to react. She wasn’t sure if it was the anticipation of the microchipper, or his hand on her. Then there was a slight sting, and the chip was gone. She let the breath out as calmly as she could. His hand lingered on her back, right where the chip had been, their fingers brushed slightly, then he removed it.

Maia turned around. Jace was standing there, looking at her as if he was waiting for something. She rolled her eyes and scoffed. Typical shadowhunter, thinking he deserves her thanks.

“I’m not saying thank you,” she said matter-of-factly, before she turned away to walk back into The Hunter’s Moon.

“Maia.” She stopped, she didn’t know why she stopped. What was it about this guy, that just made her feel off her game. His typical white boy blonde hair, his leather jackets, his eyes. God, his eyes. The first time they had met, she hadn’t been able to look away. The mixture of blue and brown were so captivating, she’d never seen anything like them before.

Maia turned around carefully, and was once again met with those eyes. “I’m sorry,” she heard him say to her for the second time that day. “If I hurt you.”

Irritation curled through her body. “If?” her voice rose. “You were willing to let the entire downworld go to hell because you’re still in love with Clary.” Maia walked towards Jace, as he himself took step backgrounds.

Jace shook his head as he took several steps back, “I’m not in love with Clary.”

“Please,” she laughed bitterly.  

“I’m not,” he replied. Maia forced herself not to roll her eyes. He was lying. She didn’t have to be a werewolf to know it. She could see it all over his face when she mentioned the red headed shadowhunter, but that didn’t stop her from egging him on.

“Then prove it.” She stood an arms length away from him, under the dim alley way. He stared down at her, and she watched him, waited for him to do something, anything. Then he did.

He kissed her in one breath, hands circling her face, and into her hair. Maia’s eyes closed instinctively, then she realized who was kissing her. She opened them and pushed Jace back, where he hit the wall.

Maia hesitated for a moment, unsure of what exactly she was about to do, but fully knowing she wanted it. God she wanted it. So she went for it. Her heels echoed in tandem with her heart as she found his lips. This time, she let Jace have her. He pushed in, trying to take the lead, take control. That really wasn’t her speed. She gripped his jacket and pushed him back into the wall with a thud.

“Don’t think this means anything,” she muttered roughly, looking up at him. He looked down at her, a dangerous glint in his eyes and a smirk that she quickly erased when she forced his jacket off of his shoulders, as they both leaned in.

A burst of pleasure went down to her toes when he bit down on her lower lip, eliciting a moan from her. Two could play at this game.

Maia grabbed hold of his arms and lifted them above his head. The fact that he let her do it so willingly, made everything much more exciting. She lowered her hands down his chest, feeling her hands run across every hardened muscle. She heard his breath hitch.

Finally at the edge of his white sweater, she pulled it up, exposing the black runed chest. They seemed to glow in the dim light. She never wanted to kiss anything so badly.

Maia felt her lips curve up in a smug grin as she kissed down his chest. She felt his fingers grip her hair, then he reached under her armpits and pulled her up to him. His lips captured hers again with a new fire, hungrier and more greedy than before.

It felt so good, and she wanted more.

Her leg lifted around his waist, and he caught onto it, while his other hand want down to grab her ass. She felt a hint of his fingers touch the entrance of her skirt, and she gripped his shirt, urging him to finish what he started. Her body arched into him, as his fingers went higher, then he stopped.

Maia pulled away, her chest heaving.

“Is this okay? Do you want to do this,” he asked her, suddenly very quiet. Maia tilted her head as she looked at his red bitten lips, then back into his eyes.

“This skirt isn’t going to unzip itself,” she raised her eyebrow with a slow forming smile. Before she knew it, he spun her around so that she faced the wall. Jace began kissing her neck as his hand felt around for her zipper.

Maia closed her eyes, and let go.
