Gary Oldman in Slow Horses (2022) Failure's Contagious
S1E1
After a botched and publicly embarrassing training mission, British MI5 agent River Cartwright is exiled to Slough House, an administrative purgatory for service rejects. Known as slow horses, Cartwright and his fellow employees must endure dull, paper pushing tasks and their miserable boss, Jackson Lamb, who expects them to quit out of boredom and frustration. Life in Slough House is defined by drudgery until the slow horses become entangled in a dangerous gambit by Regent's Park.
*It says "In memory of Kal Biggins, a much loved friend and colleague" at the end. Kal Biggins worked in the camera department (although he's not credited for this production) and was killed in a car crash, only 31 years old.

last song: peg by steely dan (it’s on my discover weekly)
last book: I just finished tyll by daniel kehlmann and I looooooved it. really fun the whole way through!! I also just started robot by adam wiśniewski-snerg, though I haven’t gotten far enough to say how I like it. It’s no tyll though.
last movie: went to see anora over the weekend. It was funny but kind of emotionally shallow for a sean baker film. Also I hated the ending.
last tv show: watched the latest season of outer banks for my cherished son, pope.
sweet/spicy/savory: I love a little savoury.
relationship status: none ❤️
last thing i googled: “sketch effect premiere pro” but the last non-work related thing was “mi5”
current obsession: furniture shopping :)

'Andrew Scott remembers the exact feeling he had when he first read Andrew Haigh’s screenplay for All Of Us Strangers. “I was actually really upset reading this script. It wasn’t because it made me sad, it was that it made me feel raw. I saw a huge amount of tenderness in the script and I related to it so much.”
All Of Us Strangers — which premiered at Telluride in late August, and releases via Disney’s Searchlight Pictures in the US on December 22 and in the UK in January — stars Scott as Adam, a 40-something screenwriter living an isolated life in a London tower block. He meets a mysterious neighbour, Harry (Paul Mescal), at the same time that he visits his childhood home in the suburbs and, suspending reality, remeets his mother and father (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) who died in a car accident when Adam was 11.
Haigh took the conceit of going back to meet one’s parents as an adult from the 1987 Japanese novel Strangers by Taichi Yamada, but toned down some of the book’s more traditional ghost story elements, relocated the setting to the UK and made the lead character gay, all of which made it much more personal to the filmmaker. The director of Weekend, Lean On Pete and 45 Years even returned to his childhood home near Croydon, south London to shoot the family scenes (he had not lived in the house for 40 years).
Scott says he did not talk to his own parents about the role but “certainly I drew on my own experience”. He also felt a close connection to Haigh’s background.
“I have never met Andrew’s parents and Andrew has never met mine, but because we were shooting in Andrew’s family home, sometimes I had this feeling, ‘Oh my god, he would have lost a tooth in that little bathroom, and now a crew is stampeding through here.’ It was an extraordinary thing for him to take us back to that childhood house.”
Born in Dublin and now living in London, Scott is best known for past roles including MI5 boss ‘C’ in Spectre, as a gay Welsh activist in Pride, antagonist Moriarty in Sherlock and the hot priest in Fleabag.
His Irish childhood did not exactly match Haigh’s near Croydon but they shared a lot in common. “My challenge was to make a marriage between his story and mine,” Scott explains. “We spoke an awful lot about our own experiences, and our own times of growing up in the early ’90s, so I could feel so much in relation to my own pain or joy. Sometimes I think what is really required of you [as an actor] is to show as much of yourself as possible, and that’s what I tried to do… and it was a real catharsis for me.”
A love story
While All Of Us Strangers does explore loneliness and grief, at its heart, Scott says, “It is a story about loving and being loved… Of course, this is a queer story at the centre of it, but everybody has a parent, whether they have a relationship with them or not, or you may have children or you may have a lover or you may understand the real feeling of being lonely.”
Scott’s journey as Adam is multi-layered, starting with the physical — for instance, being a grown man in children’s pyjamas crawling into bed with his parents.
“The way a child might be physically with their parents is being smaller than them in almost every way.” Scott also mapped out Adam’s emotional journey — he is changed through a series of encounters with his parents — allowing him to open up in his burgeoning relationship with Harry.
The family scenes shot for two weeks with Bell and Foy. “We did that more or less chronologically [so it was] an intense time in that house,” Scott recalls.
Scott, Mescal, Foy and Bell were all nominated in the performance categories of the British Independent Film Awards (among 14 nods in total).
Scott enjoyed a strong working relationship with Mescal, and the pair have maintained their friendship since the shoot. “Paul is a really hard worker — he wants it to be right and he wants the tone of it to be right,” Scott says. “I love that the relationship is so tender between the two of them. Sometimes sex scenes between two male actors can veer towards the sexual and I think it is more radical to show the tenderness between these two people — not that these things have to be mutually exclusive.”
The pair worked with an intimacy co-ordinator for the sex scenes. “Sometimes those scenes that are postcoital have a gentleness that can feel more exposing than the ones that were purely physical,” he adds.
Scott, who has been openly gay for more than a decade, carefully considers the calls from some parts of the industry for more gay actors to be cast in gay roles. “I remember growing up and reading Empire magazine and thinking I would never get a chance to play leading roles in the cinema. And I am thrilled that has changed,” he says.
“As much as I feel like representation is important, so is transformation… I don’t love the idea of being cast for something purely for my own sexuality — you’re not just playing ‘gay’, you’re playing the attributes of the character. I don’t want a totalitarian regime — we have to look at each individual story we’re telling and what’s right for that.”
He has certainly had a few years of intense experiences — he read Haigh’s script in 2021 when he was in the midst of a long pandemic-delayed Italian shoot playing Tom Ripley in Netflix’s new Patricia Highsmith series Ripley, created by Steven Zaillian. Then he shot All Of Us Strangers and soon followed it with his acclaimed one‑man Vanya in London’s West End.
The actor finds commonalities in Ripley, All Of Us Strangers and Vanya: “They definitely all explore themes of loneliness or solitude. That’s not something I chose by design, but this feels like a phase in my work… I don’t mind that, if you’re always looking towards the light. I think if our job is to reflect what it’s like to be a human being, and if you are a human being in a state of despair or loneliness or grief, you look for the light, you make a joke.”
Scott is moved to tears when talking about Strangers as being a personal and unique project (Screen International is the first publication to speak to him about the role after the SAG-AFTRA strike lifted). He tries to put it in words: “One thing that I felt was that I didn’t want to ‘act’, I don’t want to be false. It is so wonderful to have this opportunity to tell the truth — I know some of the things that [Adam] is going through — with people who you trust. With Andrew and the actors, to create something that makes people feel seen or feel better, it feels magical.”'

Why you have to watch Slow Horses, the spy thriller starring Gary Oldman
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f05a193d6079db09d7051af895df521b/c50915010542d422-4f/s540x810/c46333492261dc54a836d626948c15d17aa08c61.jpg)
If you are looking for a new show to binge-watch, look no further than Slow Horses, the spy thriller based on the novels by Mick Herron. The series follows a group of disgraced MI5 agents who are banished to Slough House, a dumping ground for the failures of the intelligence service. There, they are led by Jackson Lamb, a rude, slovenly, and brilliant spymaster played by Gary Oldman. Slow Horses is not your typical spy drama. It is gritty, dark, and full of twists and turns. It also has a lot of humor, thanks to the witty dialogue and the quirky characters. The show explores the themes of loyalty, betrayal, and redemption, as the slow horses try to prove themselves in a world of espionage and politics. The cast is superb, with Gary Oldman delivering a masterful performance as Lamb, who is both ruthless and protective of his team. Kristin Scott Thomas plays Diana Taverner, the ambitious and ruthless deputy director of MI5, who is Lamb’s nemesis. The slow horses are played by a talented ensemble of actors, including Jack Lowden, Rosalind Eleazar, Christopher Chung, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, and Kadiff Kirwan. The show has received critical acclaim and has been nominated for several awards, including five BAFTA Awards. It has also been renewed for a third and fourth season, so you can expect more thrilling adventures from the slow horses. The first two seasons are available to watch on Apple TV+, and the third season will premiere on November 29, 20234. If you are a fan of spy thrillers, or just good drama, you should definitely check out Slow Horses. It is a show that will keep you hooked, entertained, and surprised. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

Oh! Fingers crossed it happens one day! I love these Swedish talented women! And Alex Skarsgard there, please. Alicia praised Rebecca in Mi5 and Rebecca said hi to Alicia through their mutual friend swedish journalist once. Plus they were both at Vi premiere and Christmas party in 2014.

While it was far from everybody's cup of tea, among those who did enjoy the atmosphere it offered, the Diogenes Club was the premiere private club in London. Mycroft was more than happy with what he had achieved with it. In fact, he was even hoping to expand. There was opportunity in the US, and he would appreciate having somewhere familiar to stay while conducting business over there. That was not the point of his visit, though. Expansion could wait; there were other matters to deal with in the immediate.
Mycroft's latest personal assistant was leaving. This news had not surprised him - he had been aware that she was keen to focus on family, and thus, considering her recent pregnancy, it had only been a matter of time before she confirmed her intentions - but it did leave him with a problem. Finding a new assistant, or any other role within his department, was an incredibly tedious process. Even if you discounted the required security checks and could find somebody perfectly qualified, the issue of Mycroft's lack of trust still remained. He did not like to bring new people into his inner circle. It was always a risk, no matter how many checks he did.
On top of that, there was also the fact that Mycroft was not exactly an easy man to work for. He had a very specific personality. That personality was not necessarily a bad one, but it could be abrasive to those experiencing it for the first time.
Ideally, he would find somebody that he had already worked with. That would make the whole process significant easier, but there were no personal assistants within MI6 that he found himself wanting to poach, nor were there any within MI5, or Whitehall, or any of the other various corridors of power that he lingered in. The problem was still on his mind as he arrived at the Diogenes Club.
Typically, he would have ignored all members of staff in the club unless he needed their attention. This was not out of some kind of sense of superiority, but rather the fact that it was in the club rules. Do not speak to other individuals within the club. Do not interact with them in any way. Today, though, Mycroft found himself pausing.
Hm.
Thomas Barrow was a good enough employee. He had the potential for improvement, as was as the drive to achieve it. In addition to that, working at the Diogenes also proved his ability to be discrete, and he had certainly demonstrated an ability to learn the ropes of his role quickly. If he were to be given a job offer with more prestige than his current job, Mycroft would wager he would leap on it.
Normally, he would mull on that that line of thinking a little more, but he needed to find a new personal assistant quickly. If there was nobody in place to fill the role when his current one left, then everything would rapidly fall apart. With that in mind, he looked at Thomas, then motioned for the man to follow him.
After leading the man to one of the offices set aside for the running of the club (soundproofed, of course, lest anybody hear the rare necessary murmurings of conversation between employees), Mycroft shut the door behind the door of them and motioned for Thomas to sit down in front of the desk in the room.
"Do you like your job?" He asked as he too sat down, wasting no time getting to the point of the conversation.
working at the diogene's club was, in thomas' opinion, not that much different from his employment at the hotel. his essential duties, the very core of the job was almost exactly identical — to take care of their guests. whether it be by manning the front desk and greeting patrons, ensuring that refreshments were readily available and that dinner was on time for those who took their meals at the club, handling appointments, or performing the odd additional task or errand if requested, working in service was the same almost anywhere.
there were some minor differences, of course. the clientele were far more exclusive at the club — it was usually the same select few faces that he saw daily — and, due to the nature of their rather elite positions in society, almost every matter had to be handled with a certain level of discression. this was something that thomas rather prided himself on and, well, the fact that he could squirrel away any... scandelous findings to possibly use to his advantage later was just an added bonus.
the fact of the matter was that thomas barrow was good at his job, and to be honest he had grown to enjoy it. even if it was, at times, unusual.
as founder, and owner, mycroft holmes was one such face that was a near constant presence. thomas wasn't surprised, therefore, when the other appeared. he offered a slight nod of greeting, and a polite signing of "good evening, sir."
