Song Review: Margo Price and Mike Campbell - “Ways to be Wicked”
Though Margo Price’s singing voice is 180 degrees removed from Tom Petty’s, it’ll help to be a Petty fan to be a fan of Price’s recording of “Ways to be Wicked.”
Recorded with the song’s co-author and former Heartbreaker Mike Campbell for the forthcoming various-artists Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty, the number has Petty’s fingerprints all over it despite Price’s feminine leads and perhaps because of Campbell’s Heartbreaker-esque guitar and backgrounds.
To be clear, Price’s version doesn’t sound like Petty’s version. But one would have to have been living with noise-cancelling earmuffs for the duration of Petty’s career to not immediately recognize “Ways to be Wicked” as his handiwork, even it Price’s rendition is one’s first exposure to the song.
Grade card: Margo Price and Mike Campbell - “Ways to be Wicked” - B-

Listened to Margo Price’s debut album today and she REALLY sounds a lot like Dolly Parton to me it was kinda freaking me out. It was great tho! A country album made in the last ten years that I really enjoyed? An event worth celebrating lol

My friend Margo Price has written and recently released her first book and memoir! Do yourself a favor and get yourself a copy of “Maybe We’ll Make It”. Hard to believe this photograph was from 7 years ago. We had quite the girl squad on that trip up to Newport Folk and a garden variety of misadventures, and endless laughter. When I look back at these photos, it’s nothing but fond memories I’m so grateful for.

Song Review: Steve Earle - “Yer So Bad”
Steve Earle didn’t completely erase Tom Petty’s sonic fingerprints from his cover of “Yer So Bad.” Yet, Earle’s contribution to Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty, totally sounds like a Steve Earle song.
That’s because of Earle’s growl, prominent mandolin and spiraling steel. But Petty’s still in there via the lyrics, Earle’s vocal homage on the choruses and the cover’s rock ‘n’ roll rhythm section.
Petty’s associates couldn’t have asked for a more loving interpretation. And Earle fans will embrace this new Earle track as well.
Coming June 21, Petty Country’s 20 selections include songs from Chris Stapleton; Dolly Parton; Willie and Lukas Nelson; Margo Price featuring Mike Campbell; Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives; and Rhiannon Giddens featuring Silkroad Ensemble and Benmont Tench among others.
Grade card: Steve Earle - “Yer So Bad” - A
