Hi! I’m Emily! Uhm no that isn’t my real name but my irl friends call me that so you guys can call me that too! My mutuals call me “Emi” or “Em” I love both of these names but you don’t really have to call me that! You can call me Emily or a new name/nickname of your choice! As long as it isn’t a slur or an insult & as long you ask my permission, I’m fine with it.

(Before we start I would just like to apologize for the shitty quality of images. They’re just screenshots from my phone.)

1) Buff Lady? Totally Anna. 

Just...

Yeah.

Her name is 4 characters long and they didn’t give it to us, but they gave us Emily’s? She’s Anna.

The Outbreak Day posters, too.

2) Time and place of the trailer.

If BL (Buff Lady) is Anna, then this would have to take place sometime before she dies in 2018/2019 when Ellie is born.

It doesn’t take place too early on into the outbreak, as there are clickers, and it takes “years of infection��� for an infected to turn from a runner into a clicker.

So I’d place the trailer maybe anywhere from like, 2017 to 2019. Closer to 2018/2019, as I do believe that Anna is already pregnant with Ellie in the trailer.

As for place...well I’d assume somewhere around Boston, since that is where Marlene and Ellie are in the first game. 

3) What was happening.

Originally when I first watched the trailer I thought that the whole hanging sequence was some inter-Firefly warfare. Since presumably Anna is still alive, this is only a couple years into the outbreak, and into the lifespan of the Fireflies. The Fireflies probably still hadn’t found there footing. There would probably have been a lot of interpersonal fighting on deciding a leader.

Anna is Marlene’s best friend. I thought that maybe Emily (Knife Lady) had dragged her out into the middle of nowhere to kill her to get at Marlene. Or to try to get Anna to join her. 

As a person pointed out, why threaten to stab her in the stomach if she was already going to hang her? Maybe Emily thought that if she would threaten Anna’s unborn baby she would get her to switch sides and pledge her allegiance to her. If not, then she’d hang her and Marlene would feel her loss either way.

But then I watched it again (*cough*fivemoretimes*cough*) and I realized. This wasn’t an intimidation tactic. This wasn’t a strategic kill. 

This was a seemingly ritualistic execution. Potentially a sacrifice.

“They are nested with Sin. Breath in, that they may know my-”

Something Anna did lead her to be punished by having original scripture (or at least as far as my research said) recited at her, getting her guts chopped out and then hung. 

Yara and Lev, however, were not. 

Even when Yara was captured, Emily didn’t have her pull up a bucket. They could have been waiting until they captured Lev, too, but they “clipped her wings” instead of tying her up like they did with Anna.

Maybe it’s because Anna was one of them and Yara wasn’t. But Emily recognized Yara and referred to both Yara and Lev as “apostates.” It could also be important to note that Yara, Lev, and Emily all share the same stylized-looking scar on their cheeks, while Anna does not.

(Emily’s are kind of hard to see because of the shitty quality but they are there. Watch the trailer if you can’t see it here.)

I don’t think that these guys are the Fireflies; or, if they were, maybe a secret cloak-wearing group within the Fireflies.

My best guess is that Lev and Yara were high enough in the ranks or been in the club long enough to get those brands (if they are club brands) but then defected. Anna did something very bad to deserve this punishment before she got her brands. Or she was deemed an appropriate sacrifice to whatever gods they worship.

I think that Yara caught wind that an execution/sacrifice was going down that night and went to stop it, but got caught, and Lev went after her. 

Whatever happened, Naughty Dog has already set up a wonderfully perilous situation for these characters. They have to deal with a member of their trio who suddenly can’t use her arm anymore, and potentially a baby on the way. It’s unclear if they even know each other but it is clear that Lev already distrusts Anna.

4) Religion

The scripture Emily was reciting at Anna.

“Clip her wings.” (Like, an angel, or something. Or maybe they have a bird-based religion.)

Lev and Yara are referred to as apostates, which means a person who renounces a religious or political belief or principle.

I’m fairly certain that these cloaked fellows are some sort of religious group and not Fireflies (or a religious group within the Fireflies). I said this before but I just wanted to repeat it, or just but this particular idea in one place more coherently.

5) What I think will happen.

I’m too tired to write what I think will happen in the game as a whole, but I think that this trailer will take place during a flashback at the start of the game, or a series of flashbacks sprinkled throughout. 

I think we will see these cloaked fellows (or their descendants/proteges) in the main storyline, following Ellie.

Maybe Ellie will meet Yara and/or Lev and they will tell her more about her mother.
