Saroj Khan, choreographer behind hundreds of Bollywood hits, dies aged 71

Saroj Khan, a celebrated Indian choreographer behind some of Bollywood’s biggest productions, has died aged 71, her doctor has told CNN.

Khan choreographed hundreds of musical numbers during a career that spanned four decades, with some of India’s biggest stars dancing to her direction.

She died from a cardiac arrest at Guru Nanak Hospital in Mumbai on Friday, Narendra Sharma, one of her doctors, told CNN. Khan had been suffering from diabetes and was undergoing dialysis, Sharma said. He said she was battling an infection, which eventually led to cardiac arrest.

Khan had twice been tested for Covid-19 but both tests were negative, Sharma added.

Hit songs including “Dola Re Dola” from the movie “Devdas,” and “Yeh Ishq Haye” from the 2007 comedy “Jab We Met (When We Met)” were crafted under Khan’s choreography.

She also became known as a mentor to some of Bollywood’s most famous faces. Khan worked alongside late performer Sridevi in several titles, including “Mr. India,” ” Chandni” and “Lamhe,” and choreographed Bollywood veteran Madhuri Dixit in dozens more.

Dixit was among the stars to pay tribute to Khan on Friday, writing: “I’m devastated by the loss of my friend and guru, Saroj Khan. Will always be grateful for her work in helping me reach my full potential in dance. The world has lost an amazingly talented person. I will miss you.”

“Woke up to the sad news that legendary choreographer #SarojKhan is no more,” added actor Akshay Kumar, who worked alongside her on several productions. “She made dance look easy almost like anybody can dance, a huge loss for the industry. May her soul rest in peace.”

“Every time I got to know you would be choreographing the song I stepped up an extra notch,” said singer Shreya Ghoshal. “You brought nuances, expressions, grace on screen with your heroines. The end of an era.”

Madhuri Dixit recently took to her Instagram handle to pen down a heartfelt note for her ‘masterji’ Saroj Khan. The ace choreographer passed away due to cardiac arrest in Mumbai. As per the report, she breathed her last at 1.52 AM and was 71. On Guru Purnima, her favourite student Madhuri shared a throwback picture with a heartwarming note and you can’t miss it!

She shared a candid picture from the sets of her TV show. In this picture, the teacher-student duo are hugging each other on the stage. She wrote, ”I still can’t believe master ji is no more. Losing a friend, philosopher & guide like her is devastating. It was difficult for me to put down my grief in words. I had spoken to her daughter when she was in the hospital & she told me that Saroj ji would be fine. Two days later, she was gone.⁣⁣ The Guru-shishya bond that we shared, the assurance that she would be my mother on the sets, I’ll miss everything. Today on the occasion of Guru Purnima, I pay my tribute to her. ⁣Nobody can make women look so beautiful, desirable & sensuous on-screen like her. She made everything look like poetry in motion. Smitten by her, I had told her, “Saroji ji, agar aap shakkar hoti na, I would add you in my cup of tea & drink it.” She would laugh heartily at this. I’ll miss that playful laughter.⁣

She further added, ”The first time I met her was while shooting for Maine Rab Se from Karma. Saroj ji asked me so many questions, one being ‘Where did you learn to dance?’ Unfortunately, our sequence was removed from the song. I’ll miss her many questions.⁣ Saroj Khan was a game changer in the industry. She was the rebel in the male-dominated profession. There were rough edges to her personality & I feel that’s because life has been pretty uneven to her. I’ll miss that determined & headstrong woman.⁣⁣ Dancing in front of the camera & dancing on stage are two different things. Saroj ji taught me how to romance the camera when we worked on Ek Do Teen. Such was the song’s popularity that Filmfare had to create the Best Choreography category to honour Saroj ji. I’ll miss her resolve to push the envelope all the time. ⁣⁣

Usually, they moniker themselves with names that are unique but at the same time easy to remember. Think about it, would you remember the name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta? I’d say pass. Irrespective of what Shakespeare had to say, there are many actors and actresses who believed that changing their name would get them closer to fame. The timeless beauty, the epitome of elegance and panache, Rekha, was actually named Bhanukrekha Ganeshan by her parents. This versatile actress who is known for her eternal beauty changed her name to Rekha when she entered the world of entertainment. 7. Mumtaz Jehan Begum

Saroj Khan, one of India’s most prominent choreographers, has died at the age of 71.

Khan had an illustrious career that stretched four decades, and choreographed some of Bollywood’s most iconic and popular songs.

Her career took off in the late 1980s, when she worked on a slew of hit numbers with leading stars like Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi.

Khan died of cardiac arrest in hospital in Mumbai city, local media reported.

She was admitted to hospital last month after she complained of breathlessness, Indian media reports said. She tested negative for Covid-19.

Her nephew, Manish Jagwani, confirmed to PTI news agency that Khan died of cardiac arrest.

Born in 1948, her introduction into the film industry was as a child artist. In the 1950s, Khan became a back-up dancer, appearing in films like Bimal Roy’s Madhumati, where she was choreographed by dance director B Sohanlal, who she later married.

From here on, Khan’s career evolved into that of an assistant choreographer until 1974, when she got her break in the movie Geeta Mera Naam.

In the 1980s, Khan became a recognisable name in the industry after she started working with Bollywood stars like Sridevi Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit, both of whom have danced to iconic Hindi film songs.

Khan choreographed Sridevi in the song Hawa Hawai from the 1987 blockbuster hit Mr India, kicking off her career as a dance director to be reckoned with.

Bollywood took to Twitter to mourn Khan’s death, with many, such as superstar Akshay Kumar and director Kunal Kohli, thanking her for her work.

Her funeral was held on Friday morning in Mumbai, news agency PTI reported. She is survived by her son and daughter, Raju and Sukaina Khan.

‘She made dance look easy’

Saroj Khan, popularly called Masterji (the teacher), got her first big hit in 1987 with the iconic Hawa Hawai song from Mr India.

When Bollywood superstar Sridevi shimmied onto the stage in a shiny gold dress with blood red lips and a gold crown perched over her dark curls, she conquered the hearts of audiences.

And with that, Khan became the most sought-after choreographer in Bollywood for several decades.

In the years thereafter, she turned Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit, two of Bollywood’s biggest stars, into India’s dancing queens.

In later years, she continued to work with several female stars such as Aishwarya Rai, Kajol and Urmila Matondkar.

She choreographed thousands of songs, created innumerable hits, won a dozen prestigious awards and had millions of fans in India and globally.

She appeared as a judge on some of the most popular reality TV dance shows and can be largely credited for the popularity of Bollywood-style of dancing in the West too.

Generations of Indians have grown up practicing Khan’s steps in front of their television sets and mirrors.

In his tribute, Bollywood star Akshay Kumar said Saroj Khan made dance look easy. She did. She could make anyone dance even if they had two left feet.
